My Lottie, My Girl Part 63
Author Note: The Girl Who Fell Out of the Ocean is a first draft and is still raw, I hope you enjoy.
Marxby Manor 3rd September -1918
I tried to pull Will in the direction of the manor my hands clasped tightly around his wrists but he stood frozen like an awkward stone statue of some lost prince of Atlantis, long forgotten and covered in vines.
"You can stand there all night for all I care but you're coming with me" I cried at him desperately my eyes began to re-fill with tears. Will did not say a word and I was forced to drag him every step of the way, screaming and crying and marching him towards the manor. I could feel my bright sapphire dress so carefully chosen for our reunion catching on my heels getting grass stained but I didn't care I was getting him in that manor.
At the time I thought it a marvel that no one heard me, and what a great display I made getting him up the hill and inside when the party was in full swing I suppose all attentions were on Fay. But it was my mistake someone had noticed us, someone had witnessed the entire sorry display and she was waiting for me.
Percy.
It took everything I had but Will was outside my bedroom door and his beautiful face was just as blank as it had been since the first time I had seen him that evening. It wasn't just William at my bedroom door Percy was standing there waiting for me. She had years of questions running across her face and I knew she wouldn't wait or come back later Percy would need her answers now.
"What are we doing here My Lady?" Asked Will his eyes full of questions, full of need.
"Yes Doll, please tell us what is he doing here?" Said Percy.
Will was astonished when I opened the door, pushed him inside and closed it behind him he bounced over the thresh hold his mouth gaping back at me. But after all we had already been through this evening he daren't argue with me when the door was swung shut in his face leaving Percy and I on the other side Will didn't say a word.
"Please tell me it isn't true," said Percy the moment the door shut on Will.
"Tell you what?" I said standing in front of the door. I tried to make my face like Will's princely ivy statue but I could feel my own face betraying me, leaking out the truth from behind my eyes.
"I don't believe it, he is isn't he, that nobody of a Captain, he's Violet's father. Why would you do such a thing Dolly, you have everything, why would you risk it?"
I didn't say a word she could tell by my face why, I could see the fury rising up in my sister like a phoenix it was going to spill out of her I could see it, dancing in her eyes the disapproval, the horror at what I had done to Niall, to the family.
"You selfish bitch," said Percy.
My eyes shot up at her.
"You've always known Doll, you've always known how I've felt about Niall but did you care? As long as you got the big white wedding who cares if you trample over my heart, my soul?" Percy spat.
I couldn't help it I began to cry not because I was sad but because everything I had ever done had been for her, for Fay and this is how she betrays me, by calling me selfish. The love of my life has always been just out of reach all for her to keep her from suffering how I have suffered.
"If you wanted Niall, I would have given him to you, happily on a silver platter with an apple between his teeth. But he didn't want you not really he uses you, you know that I know you do. He asked Papa if he could marry me, and every day I wished it had been you. I hate Niall, he is spite and vindictive and he loves no one, and with everything I am I love Will, he is my heart and my soul, he and Violet they are everything to me,"
Percy cried, not empty quiet tears but loud hysterical screams.
"You stole my life," cried Percy she pushed hard against my chest.
"I never wanted any of it, I just wanted to be free, but Papa said that if I married Niall you and Fay could choose your own husbands, I thought I was doing a good thing," I shouted back at her arms flailing.
"Liar" Percy shouted and with no more than a hard nudge pushed me backwards down the stairs. She walked past me on the staircase and headed straight for my husband.
She told him everything.

Behind the door was Violet, she stood in her cot and bounced making what Will thought was incoherent sounds but she was pleased enough by the sight of him and proceeded in giving him her gummiest smile. Will knew he was locked in and tried to ignore the gummy baby that faced him.
Ambitiously he decided that he would try his luck anyway and gave the door handle a rattle, to no avail. Violet looked a lot like Dolly she had a head full of dark curls and two big dimples but not the eyes, they came from someone different, someone familiar he mused. The baby became restless, she could hear Dolly's voice through the door it wasn't clear what she was saying and most of her words were quite muffled but soon the incoherent conversation was turning into a full blown argument. Will felt awkward while the sisters tore chunks out of each other on the other side of the door and soon the baby had begun to grizzle.
"Oh no," said Will rubbing his forehead in a slight panic as the baby became more and more distressed and within a matter of minutes had progressed into outright wailing.
Will stood closer to the cot but Violet just screamed harder and threw her small chubby arms in his direction in the hope he would pick her up.
"Okay small person, I suppose I can stretch to that," said Will lifting her into his arms. Will felt strange when he held Violet, like the whisper of a memory was running through his mind and he couldn't quite get to it.
"Violet," said Will shocking himself his heart began to beat faster.
"I don't know where that came from," he said looking down at the girl who had nestled comfortably into his arms.
He glanced around the room, it was the first time he really had, and sitting on the dressing table was a wooden bookmark engraved with the names Violet and Dolly.
"Must have seen it when I came in," said Will unconsciously touching the little girl's hair. Again he caught himself, he couldn't help it he felt something, he pushed Violet's mass of dark hair from her eyes that were blinking themselves open, fighting sleep with everything they had.
He leant down and in a moment of pure gentleness let his forehead touch hers closing his eyes. In that moment it came back, everything it flashed before him like the most imperfect dream. "My girl," he said smiling down at Violet "Mummy knew I could never forget you, she knew one look at my darling girl and I would remember."
He kissed her head a tear fell from his face "My Lottie," he said.
Will marched over to the door still with Violet in his arms and started banging on the door.
"Dolly, let me out, I remember, oh god Dolly, please I remember, let me out so I can see your face," Will cried his head almost banging against the door as he shouted her name.
But there was no sound, the argument had stopped, the voices had gone and Will and Violet were alone.
