Saying Goodbye
*have some tissues nearby, this is a sad one.*
Jane Darling did not want to say goodbye.
Not to either of her parents. Her father had told her that he was only home for a short while. Just long enough to be able to see his children off. Off on a train to the countryside where they would be safe from the terrors of the war occurring in England.
World War II is a difficult time. Many not knowing if their home will be next in the bombing spree by the Axis powers or if the Nazis will invade their land as they have in other parts of Europe.
Jane leans up to hug her mother as they all stand at the train station together. Tears run down her cheeks as she hugs her.
"Mother....I don't want to leave," she says, "What if something happens to you while we're gone?"
"It won't, dear," Wendy Darling says reassuringly but even Jane can see the worry in her mother's eyes. A mother always worries for her children...always.
"But how do you know that?" Jane asks as she leans into her mother's shoulder.
"You just have to have faith," Wendy replies. Yesterday, Jane would have told her that that was all nonsense but it takes an entirely different meaning now. She nods her head in understanding and Wendy smiles sadly.
"And trust and pixie dust," Jane answers as she pulls away. Both mother and daughter now have tears running down their cheeks.
"Jane, if things ever get too rough here and he comes back, go with him. Take Danny with you but go with him. He'll protect you and Danny can see that there's so much more to Peter than stories," Wendy says softly, "You'll be safe there."
"I know, Mother. And I can protect Daniel from the pirates too," Jane replies and Wendy brightens at that.
"I know you can," she says glowing a bit more, "But for now, we'll see each other again. I'll be waiting right here for you whenever you come home on that train." Jane nods sadly before throwing her arms around her mother again. Edward is talking to Danny but is interrupted by Jane running into his arms. Her father chuckles at the large hug that she gives him.
"You're going to be safe, aren't you?" she asks him as the tears roll down her cheeks.
"I'll try my best. The war makes everything uncertain," Edward replies gently, brushing those tears away with his thumbs much as he did when Jane was a child and he left the first time.
"I don't want to leave you and I don't want you to leave Mummy," Jane says as she hugs his neck tightly with her arms.
"Your mother may have to be alone for some time but don't lose hope. I'll come back to her and if I don't, then you will," Edward says reassuringly, "You'll be safe in the countryside with your brother."
"But, how will I know Mummy is safe if you leave her and and if I leave her? Then no one will protect her," Jane says in between sobs.
"You're just going to have to trust that I'm going to be alright, dear. And have hope," Wendy reassures her daughter, "That's all we can do right now. No one knows how this war is going to end.
"Jane, you're going to tell me Peter Pan stories, right?" Danny asks his sister and she smiles sadly at him.
"That may be the only happy thing we have to cling to while we're away," Jane says to him, letting go of her father and reaching for her younger brother's hand. Wendy smiles sadly at the sight of the two siblings looking out for each other. They will be safe together and while it may be difficult for the family to be apart, Wendy knows that the children will always be together. Even if they wind up never growing any older physically, there are things that they will learn and she has a feeling that they will grow as people regardless of whether they do it in England or in Neverland.
And that is a feeling that despite the sadness of the current times brings her great hope.
And yet, something inside her tells her that she will never see her children again which makes it that much harder for her to let go.
"Children, please be careful. Look out for each other. And, even if something happens to your mother or I, please...move on in life. You each have a bright future ahead of you," Edward advises, gently kneeling down to his children. Both of them quickly run into his arms and he holds them tightly. Both children are crying.
"Daddy, we will see you again, won't we?" Danny asks.
"I...."Edward starts but he doesn't know how to answer.
"Daddy?" Jane prompts when he doesn't answer.
"The war brings much....uncertainty," Edward finishes.
"Don't let the pirates catch you, Daddy...or you Mommy," Danny says pulling away as the tears slowly spill down his cheeks. Edward shoots Wendy a slightly confused look and Wendy merely smiles sadly at him.
"I won't," Edward says, playing along, "Those pirates will be no match for the great Edward Harris. I'll make sure that they never knew what hit them." He looks up to his wife and smiles at her. She returns the smile, happy that her husband still endorses the stories of Peter Pan as he does.
"Can I help fight em?" Danny asks innocently, the tears slowly beginning to dry from his eyes.
"Why don't you leave the fighting to me, Danny? You'll be safer as a Lost Boy out in the countryside with your sister," Edward replies. The whistle of the train resounds throughout the entire station.
"All aboard!" a conductor calls out into the station. The little family pulls apart and Wendy sighs as she looks at her two children. Jane feels tears running down her cheeks as she hugs her one last time.
"Be safe, both of you," she says, "Keep Danny safe. Please." Jane nods against her mother's shoulder, soaking it in tears. The conductor notices the delay.
"Ma'am, the train can't wait any longer," he calls out.
"Jane, you have to go," Wendy instructs her younger daughter. Jane nods and lets go. The little family hugs one last time before the two children step over to the conductor. Danny reaches for his older sister's hand and Jane looks over her shoulder one last time to exchange looks with her parents. Wendy is dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief while Edward is gently rubbing her back and holding her.
Jane takes Danny's hand and the two of them step onto the train. A couple moments later and a couple more tearful goodbyes from other parents to children, the large steam engine rolls out of the station. Jane and Danny wave out the windows to their parents. Wendy and Edward wave back, sad smiles on their faces as they try to be best to be hopeful for their children.
The moment their parents are out of view, Danny has tears running down his cheeks as he looks at his sister who also has tears running down her own cheeks. Other children inside of the crowded train car are sobbing their own goodbyes and just sobbing at the loss of the lives that they once knew.
"Jane, can you tell me a story? Please?" Danny asks through his tears. Jane nods and takes a deep breath.
"Once upon a time...there was a splendid Lost Boy and an equally splendid Lost Girl...." Jane starts as the train rattles along the tracks.
And her stories go on for a long time to come.
A/N: Heyo!!! Welcome to the Peter Pan x Jane book!! Sorry this chapter is pretty short and pretty sad. *sobs quietly* Hope you guys enjoyed it nonetheless.
Major major major historical disclaimer:
This movie kinda screwed up the events of the actual war.
Oh, if you haven't seen this movie, this is a story that happens after Peter Pan 2: Return to Neverland. It takes place during World War 2 and stars Wendy's daughter Jane. Jane doesn't like Peter Pan and is very hardened by the war and losing her father to it (he's not dead but he goes off to fight at the beginning and she's super sad about that because she wants to go with him and she doesn't want him to leave and yeah...) so she really struggles with her mother telling stories and pushing her to believe in Peter Pan. Her little brother, Danny absolutely loves Peter Pan (and there's evidence that Jane really liked Peter Pan when she was younger too but it never really gets explained which would have led for some cool character development.) and annoys Jane with his obsession. And yeah, this all happens during a bombing raid. So, Wendy tells Danny a story about Peter and the boys stealing Hook's treasure and at the end, he attacks Jane(playfully, the kid's like four). Her notebook falls into the water and Jane gets grouchy. As Jane is putting her brother to bed, someone knocks on the door and tells Wendy that her children are scheduled to leave London for the countryside on the train that leaves that next morning (which is where our story starts). Wendy tells Jane that and it doesn't go over well. Jane doesn't want to leave so she can stay and protect her family. Wendy tells her that she can take care of her brother and tell him Peter Pan stories (which...oh boy...doesn't go over well at all with Jane). Jane gets mad and tells her mother that Peter Pan and all of the fun things that come with him mean nothing to her. Danny tries to protest and Jane crushes his heart by telling him that all of that isn't real or true. Jane then goes to sleep after her family leaves. She eventually is kidnapped by Captain Hook and taken to Neverland where Peter Pan rescues her(from a giant octopus....what the actual heck happened to the crocodile? Like it was fine. The octopus just makes me uncomfortable). She and him sort of have this love hate relationship (which makes for some adorable chemistry between the two of them and I ship them so hard it's not even funny) with Jane just being a grown up and wanting to go home to be with her family while Peter just wants her to stay and have fun because...well duh she's Wendy's daughter, why wouldn't she wanna have fun with him? Anyways, Jane struggles to fly and there's a portion of the movie where she's trying to learn to(and honestly, this is the scene that makes me ship them so hard. They're very flirty or at least Peter is and Jane puts up with it). Hook notices this issue and you'll want to remember that fact but it's not important for a little while. So Jane has problems flying and she crashes into the ground at one point and Peter finds her notebook. After playing a brutal game with it (against Jane's wishes) that ultimately leads to it's destruction, Jane gets really ticked at Peter, Tinkerbell and the Lost Boys and says that she doesn't believe in fairies.
Oh yeah....she went there (for my non-Peter Pan friends who don't know what that means, if you say you don't believe in fairies, one immediately drops down dead).
Anyways, so Tink starts to die and Jane runs off and feels sorry for herself in the dark and in the rain. The boys figure out that Tink really isn't doing well and it's because Jane doesn't believe in fairies so the boys resolve to persuade Jane to believe in fairies.
They set out to do this and Hook tricks Jane into helping him find his treasure (which Peter and the boys stole earlier in the film if ya didn't know). He gives her a whistle to blow to signal him and his crew.
So, next day, Peter and the boys find Jane. She has fun with them and she finds the treasure. She spots the whistle in her pocket and since the treasure is in a cave with water, she throws it in the water to hide it. Peter finds her and they make her a lost girl.
They sing a song (it's not that great....but they tried, okay?) and then one of the boys finds a whistle and blows it.
This leads to the boys being captured and the treasure being taken. Peter gets mad at Jane for selling them out (which...ehhh okay. Hook tricked her into selling them out but whatever...I see where both people are coming from) and tells her Tinkerbell is dying because Jane doesn't believe in fairies. Peter and the boys are taken to Hook's ship and Jane runs off to go save Tinkerbell.
Except....she's too late. Tink dies seconds before Jane gets to her. Jane sees this and starts to cry (and it's assumed that she now believes in fairies but it's not really shown that besides her apologizing to a dead Tinkerbell). Tinkerbell starts to come back to life and she and Jane set off to rescue Peter.
Peter, who is chained to an anchor (yeah...these pirates are not above chaining a fourteen year old boy to an anchor but he has kinda heckled them a lot but this seems like kind of a harsh punishment.....this is a debate for another day....), is about to walk the plank and the Lost Boys are tied to the mast. Until Jane shows up with Tinkerbell and stops him.
There's a baby fight scene that ensues with Jane setting the Lost Boys free and they take out some of the pirates with the treasure (they just shoot it over the side with slingshots and the pirates aren't smart enough to not chase it over the side and into the water). Hook has a key that unlocks Peter's chains and Tink tries to get it from them while Jane and the boys fight the other pirates. Jane eventually also tries to get it from him but Hook catches her right as she gets the key(Tink, with some help from Smee, knocked Hook unconscious) and he starts to chase her and tries to kill her. Until Jane stands up to him, gets sprinkled with pixie dust and flies away. She sets Peter free and they reunite.
Until Hook grabs her but Peter's apparently really good at throwing a dagger (I was kinda sad at the lack of sword fights in this movie but I'm also happy that Jane saved Peter but still....Peter in a vicious duel against Hook would have been fun to see) and the rope that Hook was holding onto to grab Jane is broken. Peter drops an anchor and the octopus catches Hook and sinks the ship.
The boys celebrate their victory and Jane flies home with a new belief in Peter Pan. She shares this with her family. Peter and Wendy reunite (which is probably one of my favorite London scenes in the movie) and Jane's dad come home.
And yeah, that's the movie. So that's where I'm coming from with this book. I have no idea how this fits in entirely with the historical accuracy of the war but I'm hoping to kinda frame that as we go. I'll do some research to help with that.
I hope you enjoyed it!! Thanks for commenting, reading, voting or doing whatever it is you do!!
Also, sorry for the lack of updates and activity here recently. I just haven't felt up to writing lately. But I'm hoping to change that.
See you around!!
