Reliving Happier Times
A/N: Tissues?? Maybe??? I don't know for this one......I guess with this book, error on the side of having them rather than not.
"Jane....." his voice whispers in her ear for the first time in four years. He's now down on the ground next to her now, holding her in his arms, looking a little bit older than the last time Jane had seen him.
Wait....older??? He couldn't grow up. How did he look older?
Tinkerbell flies over, jingling at Peter and Jane, probably jealous at their closeness, but when she sees the carnage of what was once their home, she stops and drops to the ground out of shock.
"Peter, how did you know to come? Or did you just decide to come?" Jane asks.
"I decided to come. I guess I just have the best timing anyone ever has," Peter brags and Jane thumps his chest. "Ow!" Peter cries in response but Jane just nestles her face back in his chest.
"Peter?" Danny asks through his tears, his attention finally on the boy hugging his sister. "You're here!" Peter looks at Jane questioningly but before she can answer, Danny rushes forward to turn the hug between the two into a group hug. "I'm Danny," he says as he sniffs away his tears.
"It's nice to meet you, Danny," Peter replies softly as he rubs Jane's back. He looks down at her to see how she's doing and she just clings to him in response.
"It's nice to meet you too," Danny says, "Mummy used to....." and he starts crying before he can finish his explanation. Jane lets of go of Peter for a moment and pulls Danny to her, holding him tightly.
"We'll figure this out, Danny," Jane reassures him, "Peter's here now. He can help us."
"The pirates bombed our house, Peter!" Danny calls out, "We don't know what to do."
"What?! Why did the pirates come all the way here to bomb your house?" Peter asks.
"I....I don't think it was the pirates you're thinking of Peter," Jane explains, "The place we live is at war with other places. Danny and I call the enemies 'pirates' to make the situation a little easier to deal with. There was a bombing raid in our neighborhood recently and that's how...." She breaks off and starts crying again. "Peter, I don't know what to do," she sobs.
"Well....." Peter says, "I survived a bomb going off in my hideout once. Maybe Wendy survived somehow. She could be just fine. Come on! Let's go look!"
"Peter.....I....." Jane starts, "I don't know that that's a good idea."
"Why not?" Peter asks, leaping up into the air.
"Well....Danny and I aren't exactly supposed to be here. And if we were to get caught, we could get in trouble. We came back because we had heard about the bombings and to our knowledge, our mother hadn't gotten out," Jane explains.
"Where'd you go before? Why'd you leave Wendy in the first place?" Peter asks.
"We went to the countryside because of the war, Peter! It wasn't safe here! Buildings are being destroyed every day!" Jane bursts into tears again, "We had no choice to leave her!! The place we live made us go elsewhere. Mother couldn't come with us. It's been so hard and you weren't there."
"I'm sorry," Peter replies, taking her into his arms again. After a moment of just letting Jane cry in his arms, he breaks in, "Hey, Jane...."
"Yes?" she asks.
"I think....it would be a good idea if we looked and then we can go elsewhere if we need to," Peter says carefully. Jane finally relents and Peter flies over the rubble looking for anything that would like a person. Jane and Danny run around on the ground and Tinkerbell uses her pixie dust to lift some particularly larger pieces of rubble. Thankfully, after about an hour of looking, the group doesn't see anything that indicates Wendy is still there.
"Well....at least, she maybe got away....." Peter says.
"There isn't time to get away," Jane explains, "She's either dead or someone found her and she's in a medical facility somewhere.
"So, what do we do?" Danny asks innocently, "She could still be alive. Right, Jane?"
"Well," she starts before pulling Danny off to the side and whispering in his ear, "We can't take Peter with us. If anyone sees him, they'll want to take him to a hospital or something." She pulls away from Danny and over to Peter. She says softly to him, "Remember....people flying isn't normal here. You need to stay out of sight."
Danny wonders out to the street to start looking for Wendy. When there's the sound of a whistle blowing through the air and a British accent shouts out, "Hey!! You!! There aren't supposed to be any children in the city." Danny gasps and starts to run.
"Danny!" Jane gasps and starts to chase after him until Peter grabs her arm.
"Wait," he says, "I'll distract the guards."
"Peter! They'll catch you!" Jane cries out softly.
"No," Peter says taking his pan flute off his belt. He gestures with it as he's talking, "I'll fly out of sight of the guards and play this to distract them while you go get Danny. Tink can follow you and we'll fly to Neverland where we can make a plan. I'll meet up with you once you get out."
"Are you sure that's going to be enough of a distraction?" Jane asks, "I don't notice that they're going to be intimidated by that."
"Don't worry about me," Peter reassures her, "I can fly. They can't. They're not going to catch me but I can use that to my advantage."
"Be careful," Jane warns him.
"I will," Peter promises and with that, he flies into a shadow and starts playing his flute. Jane stops, awed by the pretty music that he's playing for a brief instant. "Go...." Peter hisses in between melodies. Jane snaps out of it and starts running through the streets, looking for Danny. Tinkerbell follow behind her and Peter's flute music echoes throughout the neighborhood as he plays. The guards shout their confusion as they start to look for the source of the music. Jane nearly trips over a loose brick but catches herself on the remains of a building. The guards spot her at one point and start to chase her too. She looks behind her at one point and sees them gaining on her. That urges her to run faster. Suddenly, a loud clatter of a trash can falling in the guard's path and the guards tripping over it gives her the chance she needs. She sprints away and finds Danny hiding behind what was left of a building.
The two of them embrace and Danny looks as those he's about to ask something when Jane puts a finger to her lips. They can still hear Peter playing his flute off in the distance. Tinkerbell soon flies up in between the two siblings and makes a flying gesture.
"Danny," Jane whispers, "We're going to Neverland until we can come up with a plan for finding Mother."
"We are?" Danny asks excitedly and Jane shushes him. Tink jingles which catches the guard's attention. She slaps her forehead when the guards look in their direction.
"Danny, you remember what Mother said we needed to do to fly?" Jane asks. Danny nods and Tinkerbell quickly douses him in pixie dust. Danny starts to float up in the air, flapping his arms. The guards find them and Jane starts to run away only to have the guards grab her.
"Jane!" Danny cries out.
"Fly, Danny, fly!" Jane instructs, "Get away from here! I'll be fine!" Danny starts to fly higher while Tinkerbell tries to help Jane fight off the guards. Jane quickly throws a punch, hitting him right in the eye. He yells loudly. Peter keeps playing but Jane can hear him getting closer. Tinkerbell tries to jingle right in the face of a different guard. All he does is try to swat her away.
"You're a child! You're supposed to be out in the countryside with your family!" the guard reprimands her as he grabs her, "You're coming with us!"
"I came back to see if my mother was here!" Jane protests, "I'm from Bloomsbury!! We never received word that she made it out to the countryside. I heard there was a bombing here and I had to come back to make sure that she was alright."
"That doesn't mean you can come running back here whenever you want. It's dangerous here!! There've been bombings during the daytime," the guard explains.
"During the daytime?" Jane asks, "What?"
"Yes, in broad daylight. So many people have died just walking down the street because of them," he says solemnly, "Which is all the more reason why you need to leave."
"But..." Jane starts to run away, "I have to find her."
"No, you're coming with us," the guard grabs hard onto her wrist, causing her to cry out. Peter hears her cry out mid melody and lowers his pan flute from his lips. He slips it back on his belt and lands on the ground behind the carcass of a broken down building. Seeing Jane struggle with the guard, his brow furrows in anger. How dare that guard hurt his friend? He leaps into the air to rescue her.
Jane stomps hard on the guard's foot and punches him in the eye. She looks up in the sky but can't see Danny and Tinkerbell anymore. She gasps and starts to run. The guards chase after her.
Peter leaps into the air and flies after her.
"JANE! JUMP!" Peter shouts as he flies. The guards look up at him and Jane jumps as high as her legs will muster. Peter catches her hands and flips her high into the air before catching her on his back. The guards simply stare up at them dumbfounded by what just happened.
"Thank you!" Jane breathes, throwing her arms around Peter's neck and hanging on for dear life as Peter zips throughout the city. "That was a good distraction."
"Eh, it was easy," Peter says, "I've gotten very good at my pan pipes. And flying. But you already knew I was great at that." He smirks at her and she rolls her eyes.
"Oh..of course and I forgot all about how good you are at being humble," she remarks.
"Hey...." Peter says, "Don't make me drop you."
"If you drop me, you'd have to help me get away from the guards and I can't fly right now because I don't have any pixie dust," Jane reminds him but Peter shrugs.
"I'd catch you before I let that happen again. They hurt you!" Peter reassures her, "Ya wanna see?" He shifts Jane to his arms and she tries to move back to his back.
"Peter! No! Stop!" Jane protests, thumping her fists on his back.
"Ready?" Peter asks teasingly.
"NO!" Jane calls out. Peter tosses her up and catches her on his back instead.
"Okay. You've been through a lot so I don't wanna make things worse," he says when he hears the genuine frustration in Jane's voice.
"Thank you," Jane calls out as they fly after Tinkerbell and Danny who are getting closer and closer to the Second Star on the Right. Peter zips faster causing Jane's bang to blow all over her forehead. She clings to him tighter and leans her chin on his shoulder. He looks back at her and shoots her a playful grin. They eventually catch up to Danny, who cheers when he sees them.
"You got away!! Yay!!" Peter and Jane grin at Danny's reaction and Tinkerbell zips around Peter with joy.
They get closer and closer to the star and Peter looks back at Jane to talk to her.
"We're getting close to the star, so hang on. There's some really bright rainbows before we can see the island," he says. They fly up the last little way with Danny cheering and flying in and out of clouds. Peter follows him, purposely allowing Jane to get smacked in the face with a cloud as he flies through it.
"Peter!!" she yells at him and his playful laughter echoes throughout the night, "I'm going to get you when you least expect it."
"You are?" Peter asks playfully.
"Yes, I am. And you're not going to be expecting it so don't even think about it," Jane replies, "You'll never be able to see it coming."
"I wouldn't be so sure," Peter challenges her but Jane just rolls her eyes.
"I don't think you will," she says. A couple seconds later, they fly right into the star. Jane can hear Danny shouting with glee as he slides down one of the rainbows.
"You wanna slide down one?" he asks her.
"No, I think I'm better here," she says.
"Of course you are," Peter says, "You have me to keep you safe when you're with me." Jane rolls her eyes at his reasoning.
"Ohhh Peter," she sighs. They fly right past a rainbow and Jane gets an idea. She quickly reaches a hand out and splashes Peter in the face with the rainbow as they go by.
"Hey!" Peter calls out as colorful water runs down his face as they fly further in. Jane laughs at his reactions and puts her arms back around his neck. The two of them fly through the rest of the bright rainbows and out into the skies of Neverland. The island glistens below revealing somewhere they can be safe. Or at least she hopes.
Meanwhile, back in England, Wendy is still lying in a medical facility with Edward by her side.
"Wendy, please...." he whispers to her, "I just want you to wake up. Then we can go somewhere safe. I'm not losing you again."
Suddenly, a man in a medical uniform approaches Edward.
"Sir, is this your wife?" he asks.
"Oh...yes," Edward says surprised, "I'm sorry if I'm not supposed to..."
"No no. Visitors are welcome. I just figured you might want to know that I have a place where the two of you could be together and you could be safe," the man says, "You would never have to be separated from your wife again."
"Really? I'm sure we can find something once she wakes up," Edward says, "But thank you for the offer."
"It is wartime," the man persists, "Safe places are hard to find these days. My offer is unlike any other." Edward mulls over it for a moment, thinking about how nice it would be to collect his children and take his family somewhere much safer.
"Alright," Edward agrees, "What's the offer?"
"We must discuss it privately. It's certainly not for the ears of everyone," the man says, "Right this way." Edward looks down and squeezes Wendy's hand.
"I'll be right back, love," he whispers and Wendy stirs just a tiny bit at the contact. Edward smiles sadly before following the man out of the medical tent and into a nearby wooded area to talk about a future safe haven for his family.
A/N: Well, that was way fluffier than I was expecting but I can't complain. I need some Peter x Jane fluff after the last two chapters. When a book gets to be super sad all the time, it just isn't any fun to write. Lol. I've missed it writing for it nonetheless and now we're finally getting into a plot (yeah, I actually have one for this book! We'll see if it works or not.)
Anyways, sorry there was kind of a lack of Wendy content but we got LOTS of fluff and some adventure too. I love Peter and Jane's dynamic and chemistry and just ahhh!! They're just so good for each other. I love getting to write for them and I'm glad that they're finally able to interact.
And yes, she's eventually going to chew him out for leaving her for four years because I feel like that's something she would do and yes, we're gonna have some epic Tinkerbell moments because the poor fairy really needs a better support system than a teenage boy in her life.
But that's besides the point. Also, Peter's arch is super fun to play with because he goes from being really selfish and immature in the first Disney movie but has to grow up when it means that he has to save Wendy and her brothers. And then in the second one, he can still be pretty selfish and immature but he's more empathetic and learns that when Jane says no, she means no. And so, I'm hoping to play on that arch a little bit more.
And also, there is a nod to a future plot coming with Peter but you're just gonna have to wait and see how that works because it's interesting for sure.
Anyways, hope you enjoyed that!! I had a fun time writing it!!! Thanks for reading, commenting, voting or doing whatever it is you do!! See you around, friends!!
Also, I think the next update I do is gonna be posting War Wonders....I think that or Brooklyn's Bridge. War Wonders has been on the table for years longer than Brooklyn's Bridge and I feel bad for continuing to put it off so maybe I'll just figure out a first chapter and post one for War Wonders. Although....Brooklyn's Bridge. And my other project that I'm working on that is getting really really good......Ehh, I'll figure something out eventually.
Anyways, see you around, friends!!
