6: Reasons

Brain pondered why the girl had declined his offer to help.

"Why?" He asked, voicing his thoughts out loud.

"Because," the girl mumbled, "Mom said for me to stay in the house until she got back."

Brain sighed, glancing around.

Then she grabbed him by his wrist without warning and pulled him out of the room.

She let go and ran to the top of the stairs and started to race down them, but then stopped halfway down. She looked up at Brian.

"Come on!" She said, and then continued down the steps and disappeared around the corner.

Brian slowly started to walk down the old wooden stairs as they creaked beneath his feet.

He eventually reached the bottom of the steps and walked around the corner, wondering where the girl had gone.

But then, someone grabbed him by his shoulder and pulled him into a dark room. Before he could react, he heard the sound of a door slamming and locking.

In his panic, Brian pushed himself further and further away from the door of the room until he was pressed against the wall.

He couldn't see anything in the darkness of the room. That is, until a candle was lit.

He let his eyes fall on the candle. But then he looked up as he realized who was holding it.

There stood the girl, grinning. Brian sighed in relief that it was just her. She chuckled and then helped him to his feet.

"I thought I was in here with a killer or something," Brian muttered. She shook her head.

"Nope. No killers here. Just little ol' me." She said, her grin fading as her face became expressionless.

"Now, c'mon. I have something to show you..." She whispered, walking away from him.

"Wait! Er... What was your name?"

She looked up, stopping in her tracks.

"Ann," she whispered under her breath, and then continued on as Brian followed.
