9. Elevator of Aliens

"Can you put me down? Please?" Sam tried to keep calm, but he couldn't stop the tears from gathering in his eyes. Part of it was sheer terror, but the larger part was due to the fact of how Goldspun Silk carried him.

She'd thrown him over a slender, surprisingly bony shoulder, and carted him about as if he were a sack of potatoes. It wreaked havoc on his bandaged wound, and if the skin wasn't pulling, then it was roughly bumped about. If she was going to cart him around, couldn't she have carried him more gently, like in her arms?

She didn't answer him. Neither did her partner in crime.

They were in a darkened hallway now, moving down it at frightening speeds. The women didn't run, but they speed-walked at a relentless pace that anyone who wasn't an Olympic athlete would be hard pressed to match. Their boots hit the ground sternly, harshly, a steady drum of beats that matched the racing of his heart.

"Where are you taking me?"

Again, he got no answer. He wriggled, trying to move, maybe even escape, but Goldspun Silk had her arm clamped tightly against his thighs. Her strength was unbelievable, because he couldn't budge even a centimeter.

Struggling exhausted him. It also made his wound hurt even more. He went limp, grunting softly. Like this, all the blood had rushed to his head and his arms were left dangling down her back. It was extremely uncomfortable.

"Where's Doctor Jenny?"

The only sound was the rhythmic beat of the ladies' footsteps.

It was clear that they weren't in the mood to chat. Sam craned his head, trying to see where they were going. The lights were off, so he couldn't see much other than the bare walls and the occasional doorway. The decorator obviously hadn't visited the place. For a spa, that was somewhat disappointing. Unless they put all the effort into making the rooms look like spaceship laboratories, and then were too tired to finish the hallways...

Sam thought that made sense. Although he was a little uncertain about these nurses. Was punching out a door and kidnapping him part of the treatment? Was it kind of a shock therapy?

He wanted to believe so, but something in his gut told him he should be frightened. Which he was.

When they turned a corner, he saw an orange glow up ahead. It belonged to a set of lights over an-

Sam gasped.

An elevator! It was at the end of the hall and the two women were headed straight for it.

He grabbed at Goldspun Silk's lab coat, and tugged to get her attention. "We're not going to the elevator, are we?"

He waited for an answer, during which she took three long strides closer to the object of his nightmares.

"We can't go in there." He tugged harder, and the effort to do so while upside down had him wheezing liking a dying man.

For the first time since they'd abducted him from the glass room, Black Bob swiveled her head to look at him. She'd been walking slightly ahead of Goldspun Silk, so she was looking back over her shoulder at him. Meanwhile, she continued her forward march without wavering from her path, as if she didn't even need to look where she was going.

"Why not?" She asked, her voice as cold and toneless as steel. There wasn't a hint of humanity in there and it made Sam's flesh prickle.

He swallowed nervously. "Because that's where the last one exploded."

Black Bob stared unblinkingly at him. Then her lips abruptly stretched wide into a shapeless crevasse. He saw a glimpse of perfect white teeth and the black cavern of her mouth.

"Heh " she made a monotone sound. "Heh. Heh." Her head turned around, facing forward. "Heh. Heh. Heh."

Sam's skin crawled. Why was she making such an awful sound?

"Stop," Goldspun Silk said.

The awful sounds stopped. Sam could have cried in relief.

Goldspun Silk said, "You sound like you're malfunctioning."

"Ah." Black Bob sounded like she didn't care. Or maybe, Sam suspected, that was just how her voice was. "I will make adjustments."

"Please do."

They came to the elevator. Sam quaked, his hands clenched around handfuls of Goldspun Silk's coat. Even though the last thing he wanted was to go inside an elevator with a pretty lady, it appeared he had no choice.

Black Bob, instead of pushing the button like a normal person, simply dug her sharp nails into the seam of the doors. She pried the doors open with brute force. The scene made Sam's gawk like a kid at a toy store. That is, if the toy store was filled with homework instead of toys.

The elevator car was already on this floor, which was mildly relieving. If it hadn't been, Sam wasn't so sure that would have stopped these women. They tackled obstacles with the kind of brute force that made power lifters look like wimps.

They entered the car. Sam dangled like a limp rag from Goldspun Silk's shoulder. He found it hard to breathe, his breaths coming in short, hyperventilated gasps. How could a relaxing trip to the spa have turned into this? If this really was some kind of therapy treatment, he didn't like it.

"Can we go back?" He pleaded. "Please?"

Predictably, he got no answer. Maybe these nurses weren't really nurses, after all. Maybe they were escaped patients. Their behaviour made more sense in that case, but now Sam was even more frightened.

Where was Dr Jenny? Where were the Commandoes? Would he even see Gran again?

Sam sniffled, his vision going blurry. He'd thought yesterday was an awful day, but today wasn't turning out much better.

Black Bob pressed her hand against the control panel. Blue sparks abruptly flared to life, skittering across the buttons and arcing over her fingers.

Sam's eyes grew wide. What-

The elevator dinged and its doors slid shut. The lights came on. The sudden brightness assaulted Sam's eyes, which had grown accustomed to the darkness. He squinted, and then gasped when the elevator abruptly jolted up.

"They've noticed," Black Bob stated.

"It doesn't matter," returned Goldspun Silk. "They can't stop us."

Sam bit back a sob. These ladies were crazy! He had no idea what was going on, but his chest really hurt and he felt dizzy and nauseated and-

The elevator jolted roughly to a stop. The sudden motion was the last straw.

Sam emptied his stomach. Vomit splattered down the back of Goldspun Silk's coat. The smell was absolutely vile, and he retched all the more. Tears and snot accompanied the mess. There was so much goop sliding down his face that it probably looked like his skin was melting off. Some of it got into his hair, but Sam wasn't in the frame of mind to care.

With a ding, the elevator doors slid open. Goldspun Silk carried him out. They were now in a brightly lit garage. Shiny black cars lined the walls on either side, while the cement floor gently sloped up at the far end. It wasn't a large garage, persay, but big enough to hold a rich man's car collection.

Black Bob glanced at Sam and made that horrible sound again. "Heh. The human is leaking."

"It's fine," Goldspun Silk wasn't concerned. "His generator is still functioning properly."

Human? Sam felt like he was going to faint. The image of the strange futuristic laboratory outside his glass room came to mind. And like he'd been struck by lightening, he had a horrible realization.

These freaky women - and maybe even the girl in the elevator - they had to be aliens. He'd been taken aboard their ship and now they were taking him away. If all the blood hadn't already been in his face, he would have turned white.

He'd been abducted by aliens!

"Gran," he whimpered. It was absolutely terrible that her plans for a nice spa retreat had been so utterly ruined, but even worse, he was starting to fear that he'd never see his beloved grandmother again. She'd be so heartbroken when he failed to return home, and he couldn't even begin to imagine how she'd cope.

That thought alone choked him up. More snot dribbled from his nose. His shoulders shook with a silent sob.

Oh, Gran!

Never again would she give him that look, the one so full of fondness, and tell him, "Sam, you stupid idiot. What have you done now?"

"I'm sorry, Gran," he sobbed. Now the aliens had him and he'd never see her again. "I'm sorry!"

Goldspun Silk abruptly stopped. She stood beside a large black car that was already running. Its engine was quiet, it was barely louder than a purr.  "We have him."

On the opposite side of the car, the driver door opened, and a familiar bald man stepped out. He frowned across the car's roof at Sam.

"Yes, I can see that. What's he blubbering about? You didn't damage him, did you?"

Sam stopped mid-whimper. He stared at the bald man, utterly confused. "Dr Jenny?"

"Of course not," Goldspun Silk sounded almost offended. "I was extremely careful."

"He leaked," Black Bob pointed out in her toneless voice.

Dr Jenny sighed, as if disappointed. "Yes, I see that, too. Put him down, Sandy. Humans are quite fragile, and I'm afraid you've caused him significant distress."

"Dr Jenny?" Sam's head spun. It was made worse when Goldspun Silk grabbed his waist and swung him off her shoulder. His entire world swam around him in a dizzying twirl. Unhappy with this, his stomach gave a weak gurgle. Sam turned green.

The second his feet hit the ground, he doubled over and vomited a second time. There wasn't much left to come out, but that sure didn't stop his belly from giving a valiant effort. He fell to his knees. Goldspun Silk moved back, having no intention of getting involved.

"Oh dear." Footsteps came around the car. Cool fingers gently touched the back of Sam's neck, then abruptly grabbed his shoulders when he nearly toppled over. The support was the only thing that kept Sam upright.

Dazed, he lifted bleary eyes. He saw a familiar shiny bald head and crystalline eyes. "Dr Jenny?"

"That's right, Samwell. I apologize, this must have been quite stressful."

Relief blossomed in Sam's shivering heart. It was reassuring to see the doctor here, but Sam couldn't forget the events of the last few minutes. Or of the scary revelations he head on his journey here.  Apprehensively, he peered at Dr Jenny.

"Are you aliens?"

Dr Jenny looked back at him. His pale eyes glittered.

Behind, Sam could hear a "Heh. Heh."

Dr Jenny opened his mouth to answer. Sam braced himself, already expecting to hear the worst. He waited-

Dr Jenny's head exploded. One second it was there, and the next it was gone.
