Chapter 9: Red Stars
(Two quick things before this chapter starts okay? I'm sorry but I just want to say it real quick. I have 80 reads (71 when I started writing this chapter!) and they aren't as evenly spread throughout these chapters as I have seen in other books but hey people are liking this! Exciting for me since I believed this to be a dead fandom, or even if you aren't into Minecraft Diaries still thank you for the reads check out the basis series. Number 2... There are not a lot of night blooming flowers so I'm taking one I read a decent bit about and rolling with it and if I'm wrong and you know I am then please let me know but most of them are tropical or cacti so I was limited and didn't want to make one up. If I did I would go way too in depth and never get the actual chapter out. Either way thank you for reading I hope you enjoy!)
Following Laurence
I opened my eyes to a sunlit inn room, memories flooding my mind as I sat up.
Was that real or a dream?
I looked at the room's nightstand and saw a partially wilted flower.
Real, had to be real.
I ran my hands over my face and look back at the flower.
"We call it a Red-Star, it only blooms at night. I've never seen them anywhere else."
I am falling for her aren't I?
"We used to think they only bloomed when they died, so they were brought into some funerals. Then we found out they simply didn't close if they had died."
I found myself smiling at the memory of her talking about the water-flowers. I could understand why she had wanted to go see them.
"That discovery broke a lot of traditions but I'm surprised no one had seen them at night for so long."
The flowers themselves could be found in a small clearing around a stream. Other flowers littered the area but the Red-Star stood out in the water. The moonlight had caught on its petals beautifully showcasing its vibrant colors; but the beauty of that flower had been dull in comparison to Y/N.
I wish she would always be as happy as she was talking about that flower to me.
But is it really her I see when I look at her and what we could have? Is it really her I want that happy future with or the one who once was so similar to her?
I need to know.
As You
You continued lying awake in your bed, blankets long tossed to the side. When you got home from taking Laurence to see the flowers it had been easy to fall asleep, but nightmares had plagued you from when you first closed your eyes.
Fire.
Yelling.
Smoke.
Crying.
The rising sun.
Their screams.
Sometimes you swore you could have reached out and helped them.
Sometimes you looked at the embers that Duncan often wound around his fingers and were reminded of something else.
There was a knock at your door that you almost didn't notice.
"C-come in."
Was that your voice?
Why were you shaking so much?
"Are you alright- Y/N." Latasha opened the door and looked at you for a minute.
Why was your face so wet?
"Do you- ?"
"No." You said quickly and sat up. You rubbed at your face in hopes of getting the tears off of it before you could start bawling.
Latasha hesitantly crossed the room than stood in front of you for a moment. You looked back up at her for a moment and feel the tears starting to form.
"Could I have helped them? Any of them?" You ask, forcing your voice steady.
"I don't think you could've done anything without negating others sacrifices." She answered and opened her arms a bit. You latched onto her awdwardly due to still sitting on the bed. She still tried holding onto you comfortingly as you continued to sob.
She didn't try to hush you like the previous Lord Evander did.
She didn't say anything to make you laugh like Duncan did.
She just hugged you and let you cry into her shirt because that's what you needed. Even if it wasn't what you wanted.
After a while you stopped crying as hard. You still buried your face into her shirt, though.
"Why do I feel like this?" You asked.
"Survivor's guilt." She answered and kept petting your hair comfortingly.
"It sucks." You answered and pulled your face back a bit.
"I know it must." She said and laughed quietly to herself. You pulled back from her and she took a moment before letting go. She stepped back and started making her way out of your room as you stood up.
"Wait." She paused and turned back towards you. You stepped forward and pulled her into another hug. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." She said and hugged you back. The two of you let go and she smiled then patted your arm. "Get changed, you still have to lead that group to Rohan."
"You might want to change that shirt before you leave, too." You replied.
"It's been through worse." Latasha said and shrugged. "It's not like anyone will notice or judge me for it, other than Honey." She smiled and headed back out of your room.
"Have a good day Latasha!" You called to her.
"You have a better one!"
~Time skip just to clarify it's only by a few minutes tho~
Following Duncan
Y/N and I opened the door to Rayna's and saw a few familiar villagers in there alongside the travelling group.
"Harris, hey, I see you got your glaive back from Runswick. Any ideas on what it is yet?" Y/N called to someone, it turned out to be Harris. Second in command guard of Percyvell. He turned and his yellow eyes lit up in delight.
"Oh hey Duncan, Y/N," He nodded to each of us respectfully. "Still no clue, I'm afraid. The blacksmith's guess was something out of region or it was enchanted iron and so it appears different. We'll put a name on it eventually."
"I hope it's something we can replicate for every other guard. It's sturdy, easy to sharpen and hard to dull. I bet Jemma is mad that she can't start ordering sets of it yet." I said to him. He wiped some wine-purple hair from his face and nodded.
"Yeah, she wants tons of the stuff. She'd probably try forging it herself to speed the process if we could find a way to get more." Harris shrugged.
"Well that's Jemma, hey Harris we're going to have to see you around. We had a group we were going to show to Rohan and we have to go to the stables after this." Y/N smiles and he smiles back.
"Alright you two head on your way, don't overwork yourselves and say 'Hi' to 'ol Luther and Mercy while you are up there." Harris says and walks out of The Golden Apple's front door.
I look at Y/N and jerk my head to the staircase.
"Well they aren't down for breakfast so you want to check the rooms for them?"
"Sounds like a plan." She smiles at me and heads towards the stairs with me close behind.
Can't wait to get to Rohan and see our old friends.
