Chapter 12: Can you be Exes if you were Never Together?
(I somehow convinced myself that I didn't update last week and I honestly can't tell if that's true or not because the last chapter says it was updated on the 29th but it isn't saying when it was published and I'm sorry if I didn't upload but either way I am going to be publishing a few one-shots in my one-shots book over the weekend so check those out if you want to I'm in a writing and drawing mood right about now. I hope you enjoy this chapter, expect more Laur/N content in the next few chapters I just put this in here so you would know why Duncan essentially is going to disappear into the void during that.)
As You
Duncan sit on your bed attempting to play a tic-tac-toe like game with different rocks.
"Eventful day, huh?" Duncan asks you.
"Yeah it's been... more than I expected it to be." You answer and place a rock down.
"Did you expect Luther and Mercy to-" Duncan starts asking and cuts himself off. You look up at him and saw him hunched over himself. Eyes more red than usual in two ways.
"No. I would have never seen it coming. They seemed more like us than that." You reply then stay silent. "Did you-?"
"I don't know." He says quietly.
"I'm sorry."
~Earlier today~
As you
You knock on the door and hear some muffled speaking before it's pulled open by a very familiar redhead.
"Y/N, Duncan! It's great to see you. How have you been in Percyvell?" Luther asks the two of you, showing way more enthusiasm then you were used to seeing.
"Amazing, may we come in?" Duncan asks and smiles at him.
"Oh yeah, yeah of course." Luther nods and looks down as he steps inside for the two of you to get inside.
"Where is Mercy?" Duncan asks and you can see Luther's smile falter for a moment as he closes the door.
"She made quick friends with a bookseller in town and has been filling up our bookshelves with them. She wanted to check back in with him before he left." Luther responds.
"That's nice." Duncan says then it goes awkwardly quiet. He turns to look over a bookshelf in the main room and doubles over a few books for a bit. Luther's black eyes lose their luster for the moments while he is turned and Duncan drops his smile.
"Have the two of you been getting along well?" You ask Luther.
"Yes, it's been great. We were both kind of hesitant to share a house while getting back on our feet but it's definitely been great. I feel like I never really knew her while we travelled and it's so much better now." Luther smiles and looks back down with some pink tinting his ears.
"Really?"
"Yeah," Luther rubs at the back of his neck over his faded turquoise jacket. "It's funny, we both felt like the odd ones out in the all of it. You and Duncan had your own sibling thing but Mercy and I both thought that the other was closer to Duncan."
"I never thought either of you were closer to me than the other." Duncan says and turns to face him.
"We all had our own dynamics, we just ended up ranking the others above our own."
"I never meant to make either of you feel-"
"I know you never meant to. It's just what happened." Luther interrupts and runs a hand through his hair. "I just meant it felt nice not feeling alone about it, Duncan." We all go silent again, but this time you had nothing to say as they stared at each other.
Then the door opened.
"I'm back, Darling!" Mercy called in a sing-songy voice while she stepped inside. "Oh Duncan, Y/N! It's been so long! I'm glad the two of you were able to stop in for a visit." She smiled and it seemed like neither boys in the room had anything to say. You sent a smirk towards Duncan and he looked away from you.
"It's great to see you, Mercy. I noticed you actually did start a book collection." You say.
"Oh, yes. You know how people are with burning history, and I like reading anyway so it all works nicely." She answered and played with the ends of her hair. Duncan averts his eyes, all evidence of confidence gone as he seems to resist wanting to hide himself in a hole and never crawl out of it. Luther laughs quietly to himself, whether at Mercy or Duncan you couldn't say.
"Luther said the two of you were actually becoming friends. How has that been?" You ask. Mercy blushes and steps towards the bookshelf near Luther.
"W-well it's not exactly like that." She said. Luther grabs one of her hands and intertwined their fingers, making Mercy's face light up like when Duncan first called her adorable. You looked towards Duncan and saw something flash across his face before he schooled his expression back into a fake confident persona.
His smile reached everywhere except his eyes.
"That's wonderful." He said. Luther's dark eyes widened.
"Really?"
"Yes! The two of you, being together." Duncan swallowed. "Y/N and I better be at the wedding, after all we introduced the two of you."
"I... I mean we haven't been thinking about... about that yet. It's way too soon for all that." Mercy added in.
"Of course, but still," Duncan nodded and didn't let the smile drop. It was silent again then Duncan clapped his hands together.
"Well it was lovely to learn about all of this, and I am sincerely happy that those I cared for are finding happiness with each other, but Y/N and I need to be leaving." He said.
"You do?" Luther asked.
"Oh yes, we were leading a group through and wanted to stop by and check in. We really must get back and check in with them as we said we wouldn't be gone long and all." He said and looked at you.
"Yeah, they were on the other side of town so we probably need to check with them and see if we are staying for the night or moving on soon." You lied. After all, you did need to check in, even if it wasn't with them.
"Oh, well, feel free to stop by again whenever you have time." Mercy said.
"You couldn't stop us from doing that if you wanted to." Duncan said. He took a step towards them, then turned around and opened the door. "We will be seeing the two of you on a later date."
"Goodbye, have a good afternoon." You said and smiled at them before following after Duncan. They echoed back some valedictions of their own as you closed the door behind you and ran after Duncan.
"The house wasn't on fire, you know." You said to him and bumped into his shoulder.
"It would have been easier to stay if it was." He said back. The smile was gone now.
"Do you want to talk about that?"
"Later, let's actually catch up with our travelling guests." He said. You nodded at him and walked.
