Chapter 17
I sat in my seat next to Harry and Ron in our first Divination lesson. I didn't know how I was feeling about this lesson. On one hand I found it interesting but this teacher was just insane.
"Welcome, my children. In this room, you shall explore the mysterious art of Divination. In this room, you shall discover if you possess the Sight." I looked to Harry and Ron both as well seemed as confused as me. "Hello. I am Professor Trelawney. Together, we shall cast ourselves into the future. But know this. One either has the Gift or not. It cannot be divined from the pages of a book. Books only cloud one's Inner Eye." I raised my eyebrow at this now liking the lesson a bit more as it would make us feel a bit more special if we were good at it.
"What rubbish." I jump along with Ron and Harry before spinning to see Hermione who had just appeared from thin air.
"Where'd you come from?" Ron asks.
"Me? I've been here all along." I frown slightly at this. 'no she wasn't I would of walked into class with her' I dropped my thought as Trelawney had spun towards a very nervous Neville.
"You, boy! Is your grandmother well?"
"I... I think so." He stuttered out.
"I wouldn't be so sure of that." This made Neville go slightly pale and I even glared at the professor at how blunt she was. "The first term will be devoted to the reading of tea leaves. If all goes well, we will proceed to palmistry, fire omens, and finally... the crystal ball." She then eyes Parvati. "By the way, dear, beware a red haired man." She doesn't even elaborate as she continues on. "Unfortunately, classes will be disrupted in February by a nasty bout of flu. I myself will lose my voice. And in late spring, one of our number will... leave us forever." I look around the class noticing how uneasy everyone looks at that news. "Well then. Shall we?" With that speech finished we got given cups to read tea leaves. I drank my tea and once there was only leaves left I opened up my book called Unfogging the Future and tried to understand the symbols. I looked at my leaves until I finally saw something it was a falcon holding a club in one claw and a what seemed to be a cross in the other. I turned the pages in my book and found out that there was three meanings in my tea leaves. The falcon meant "a deadly enemy", the club meant "an attack" and the cross meant "trials and suffering". All of them made me feel nervous before I quickly put my cup down and looked over to Harry and the others.
"What do you see in Mr. Potter's cup, Mr. Weasley?" The professor asked Ron.
"Well. He's got a wonky sort of cross -- that's trials and suffering." I frowned slightly hearing that Harry had one of mine. "But this lot here could be the sun -- that's great happiness. So... he's going to suffer but be very happy about it." Trelawney takes the cup from Ron and peers inside before gasping.
"My dear boy... You have the Grim."
"The Grin? What's the Grin?" Seamus asks.
"The Grim. Not the grin, you idiot." Parvati corrects.
"But what does it mean, Professor?"Dean answers but before the professor can answer Lavender speaks up.
"'The Grim...'" We all turn to see her reading from her book. "'Taking the form of a giant spectral dog, it is among the darkest omens in our world. It is an omen... of death.'" I turn back to see Harry peering into his cup worriedly.
***********************
"Honestly. If you ask me, Divination's a very woolly discipline. Now Ancient Runes. That's a fascinating subject." Hermione ranted as we walked to our next lesson I rolled my eyes at her chuckling softly.
"Ancient Runes? Exactly how many classes are you taking this term?" Ron asked.
"A fair few." Hermione said with a shrug.
"Hang on. Ancient Runes is the same time as Divination. You'd have to be in two classes at once." This made me raise an eyebrow at Hermione.
"Yeh 'Mione, that seems a bit wired" Hermione smiled to me shaking her head.
"Don't be silly. How could anyone be in two classes at once?" I let out a sigh but smiled as she starts mimicking Trelawney. "Broaden your minds..." We quicken our speed to go to, my personal favourite lesson, care of magical creatures. As we arrive I notice Draco with Crabbe and Goyle and some other Slytherins. Hagrid was calling us all over.
"C'mon now, get a move on! Got areal treat for yeh. Great lesson comin' up." We followed him along the edge of the forest. We go towards a paddock where something rotten smelling hits my nose, I place my hand over my nose at the smell of death. I notice that the smell came from a rack of dead ferrets with flies buzzing around it. "Gather 'round. Find yerself a spot. That's it. Now, firs' thing yeh'll want ter do is open yer books"
"And exactly how do we do that?" Draco cuts Hagrid off making Hagrid look to him.
"Crikey. Didn' yeh know? All yeh've got ter do is stroke 'em. Look" I watch as Hagrid takes Hermione's book and stroked the side of the spine. I copied him and noticed the agressive book had calmed down allowing me to open the book. "Righ' then. So... so... yeh've got yer books, an' now yeh need the Magical Creatures. Right.So... I'll... I'll go an' get 'em." I felt sorry for Hagrid as I could sense how nervous he was for this but I knew he could do this, he already would tell me facts about the creatures of the forest he just needed to gain some more confidence. He walked into the forest and I watched him disappear until I saw Draco shaking his head.
"God, this place is going to the dogs. Wait until my father hears Dumbledore's got this oaf teaching classes." I spin around to him glaring daggers at him which he mustn't of seen as him and his friends kept laughing. Harry turned to him glaring more severally them me.
"Listen, you stupid prat" I went to place a hand on Harry to stop him from killing Draco when Draco steps back his eyes widening before pointing behind us.
"Potter, there's a Dementor behind you." I felt my heart stop at this as I remembered the feeling of the Dementor last time. Just the thought of it made my palms go sweaty and I began to shake slightly. I didn't notice I was slightly blacking out in fear until I felt a hand on my shoulder making me jump my heart rate going up until I noticed it was Hermione giving me a worried look. I let a few shaky breaths looking around and seeing there was in fact no Dementor and people were laughing mainly at Harry for believing it when I saw Draco shot me a worried look at how I reacted to his prank. The laughs stop when three large beasts emerge from the trees, the torso, hind legs and tail were that of a horse but the front legs, wings and head were that of an eagle. I watched these giant creatures in awe my shaking body calming down.
"Beau'iful, isn' he?" Hagrid says walking up to one of them.
"Hagrid. Exactly what is that?" Ron asked.
"A Hippogriff, o' course. Now, firs' thing yeh gotta know is they're proud. Easily offended, Hippogriffs are. Don't never insult one, 'cause it migh' be the las' thing yeh do. Right then -- who wants ter come an' say hello?" We all watched the lesson unfolled as Harry had gotten to pet the Hippogriff called Buckbeak. After he had met him Hagrid let us take turns to meet them lining us up I was behind Malfoy in the line just looking straight ahead when I heard Draco.
"I didn't think you'd react like that" I looked at him raising my eyebrow.
"What do you mean?"
"With the Dementor joke, you looked like you were gonna pass out"
"Well, when a Dementor goes to kill you it doesn't exactly leave happy memories" Draco hung his head.
"Well, I'm sorry I was just trying to scare Potter" Before I could speak up it was now Draco's turn he walked forward to Buckbeak and bowed. Buckbeak bowed to Draco, who had then walked up to him petting his beak when I heard him speak up.
"This is very easy," Draco said catching Harry's attention making me roll my eyes. "I knew it must have been, if Potter could do it ... I bet you're not dangerous at all, are you?" I could sense Buckbeak was getting ticked off by Draco. "Are you, you ugly great brute?" It all happened so quickly in a flash Buckbeak had reared up and slashed Draco hitting his arm. Against my better judgement I ran in front of Draco before Buckbeak could strike again. As Buckbeak seemed to raise his claws to strike me down I glared at him my vampire eyes darkening in a protective manner over Draco making Buckbeak back down stepping back in fear. I turned to Draco who was on the floor holding his arm.
"You okay?" He nodded shaking slightly. "Well, then thank goodness you complete idiot" It was at this point the familiar scent of blood hit my nose. I looked to his arm seeing that his robes were turning red where the claws had hit him. The scent of the blood made my eyes go red even though I hadn't eaten human food this was basically a craving hitting me hard as Draco was the only human blood I had tasted. I quickly pushed the urge to eat down and quickly ran off back towards the castle. I walked along the edge of the forest hoping to get back to the castle but before I could get back to Hagrid's hut I saw something in the forest making me stop. In front of me was a black dog looking directly at me. I clenched my fist urging the bloodlust down and the dog looked at my fist tilting it's head before it stood up barking turning to the woods looking to me. I looked around before following it until it stopped. "What is it boy?" I asked before seeing a deer in the forest I patted the dogs head before using my vampire speed and drinking the blood but not killing the creature just making it go to sleep for a bit. I turned back to the dog who was sat watching me I walked up to it. "Why do I feel like I know you?" I shuck the feeling off before stroking it's head. "I got to go boy, stay safe out here" I then ran out of the woods and went back to the castle heading to the dining hall where I saw my three best friends waiting for me when Hermione saw me she walked up to me.
"Where did you go? We saw you jump in front of Draco then you ran off" I looked around trying to think of an excuse.
"Oh, um well I saw that he was bleeding and I really don't do well with blood" Luckily they seemed to buy it before we went inside.
