mrs high and mighty
Shoulders are not comfy.
I think this as I cry uncontrollably into my sporty, beautiful and totally blonde best friends one. I'm just lucky she's in my form as her second name is Everson, Samantha Everson, otherwise I would have no one to pour out my sorrows to, two minutes before maths begins as we wait along the corridor.
"Sam, my life is officially over at this school- before it's even started! My form tutor hates me sniff because I came late and I have an hour's detention after school sniff so my mum's gonna hate me and the all the students hate me sniff 'coz I snitched on those boys, uh I hate my life!"
"Honey," Sam crooned soothingly in that southern California drawl she has "Not everyone hates you, I don't hate you, and who cares what those stupid boys think anyways, huh. Now you just calm down and wipe those tears away... Like seriously right now, before you slobber all over my new jacket"
I sigh and lift my head.
"Thanks Sam; you're a life saver. But don't kid yourself, those boys have influence. No one has such an inflated ego as they do without at least a little bit of popularity to back it up. You should probably just stop being friends with me; I wouldn't want to ruin your chances at this school too." I sighed melodramaticly
Sam burst out laughing.
"What's so funny?"
"Oh Kat you can be so stupid sometimes, now you get your ass into that classroom before you're late for another lesson, and make sure you save a seat for me near the back."
I sniffed once, took a long breath and stepped inside.
Looking around the classroom was strange. It was all girls from my old school because we hadn't been setted with the boys yet, but there was still about half of them that I didn't know or just vaguely remembered seeing around. Now it seemed I would be forced to make new friends, meet new people, socialise... Oh boy.
I made my way cautiously between the rows of desks to the back of the classroom, slumping into an empty chair and swinging my brown satchel onto the chair beside me to save it for Sam. I looked up to find two pairs of eyes staring unashamedly at me from the neighbouring desk. They belonged to two Asian girls, both with long black hair plaited into a side braid, deep purple lipstick and over the top 'smokey eye' eye shadow with heavy black liner.
I tried to ignore them at first with gritted teeth, but I was sure their stares must of been burning holes in my skull by then, and combined with an infuriating background noise of whispers, it was getting on my nerves. Sassy Kat ignite.
"Do you have a problem," I asked sarcastically "because my head really isn't that interesting, believe me."
The girls shared a indecipherable look and the nearest one turned to face me saying
"We don't want a snitch sitting next to us. People will think we're snitches too, or loners or something."
My mouth dropped open in surprise. News really travels fast in this school.
Panicked I glanced across the room where Sam was still talking to one of her friends by the door, but she was facing away from me. It looked like I was in this on my own.
"Is that the best you can do? Calling me a loner? God you're immature." I retorted angrily
"What did you just say?" The first girl hissed, staring daggers
"Oh I'm so sorry!" I crooned fakely "I didn't realise. I hope I didn't offend you."
Then proceeded to explain myself in sign language (my cousin was deaf). Daymn I'm good... and big headed...
"Haha very funny, no I'm not deaf." She replied sulkily, rolling her eyes
I smirked, then frowned as I remembered the cause of our argument "How did you know about this anyway?"
"The boys have been spreading it everywhere," the second girl answered, sighing pathetically "Everybody knows them, and they're so dreamy..."
"Not now Maryam," the first girl hissed before raising her voice to address me "Well whatever! We don't want you here, so leave. Now."
Huffily I got up, giving them one last death glare, before scanning the room for available seats. There were plenty, but as I walked up to each of them, I found the other desk occupant quickly slam their bag down on it or hastily swing a leg up and give me a dirty look.
It was only when I reached the very front of the class that I heard a shy voice say
"You can sit here if you like."
I looked around to locate the voice but couldn't spot anyone until I noticed a girl in the corner of the room smiling nervously. The girl had mousey brown hair in two French plaits, calm grey eyes hidden by a pair of round black glasses and a small freckled face so filled with innocence touched with sadness that I had an intense urge to bundle her up into a hug like the overly caring creep I am.
I mouthed a quick apology to Sam with a promise to explain later and I slid into the seat next to her. We sat in silence for a bit, just occasionally exchanging awkward smiles until she blurted
"Hi I'm Beatrice." She said quietly, looking up through her eyelashes."Sorry I... don't talk to new people a lot."
"Don't worry," I answered knowingly "I get nervous too. I'm Kat. I haven't seen you around before."
"That's probably because I spend most of my time in a corner of the library- round by the classic novels." She said
"Oh. That sounds... nice."
"Don't pretend that it's not weird. I know it is. I guess I've just never fitted in with everyone else. Or no one's ever really noticed me before. Beatrice the eternal Chameleon."
I felt a bit alarmed at this prospect and hurriedly replied
"Well I've noticed you, and I have a feeling we're going to become friends."
"Really?"
"Really. Honestly people don't know what they're missing; you seem like the nicest person in here. Except me and Sam, of course."
Beatrice giggled and shoved me softly in the arm. I couldn't help but smile a bit inside.

"Was that the longest Maths lesson ever or am I just really dumb?" Sam moaned as I rejoined her after Maths
"Hmmmm... you're just really dumb." I countered with a serious face
Sam laughed indignantly and pushed me sideways saying
"It's not like you are so intelligent!"
"I'll thank you I'm a straight A student!"
"Yeah, but you're not so very great at comebacks Mrs high and mighty are you now?"
I stood there dumbfounded.
"Ha! Sam one- Kat nil."
"Whatever." I said rolling my eyes "Sam, meet a new friend of mine- Beatrice. Sam Beatrice, Beatrice Sam."
"Hey Beatrice, can I call you Bea?"
"Sure, it's nice to meet you Sam."
"Okay it's P.E. next; everybody ready to have their asses whooped?"
"Ughhh."
I was going to be sore after school. After school, after an hour long detention with my worst enemies. What fun.
