Chapter 3

Asher already hated home. Now he couldn't even get into his home. "What is this thing?!" He yelled, banging his fists on a wall of air. The front door of his house was there, less than a foot in front of him, yet for some reason he couldn't seem to get to it.

It was like air that had turned into rubber. When Asher hit it, his fists would bounce off. "Asher! Help!" His 'family' cried; their voices oddly muted from behind the wall. Ben looked like he was having a panic attack. 'Please Asher!" He screamed. Asher actually felt bad for his brother. Ben was extremely claustrophobic and now he was trapped behind something no one could break.

"Go out of the other door! In the back!" He told them.

"We can't! We can hardly move a few feet!" They answered, looking very distraught.

Asher suddenly understood. The wall must have been thicker than a few feet and when it had shoved his family against a wall, it sucked them into a little air pocket inside. From there, there was no way out.

He turned away, his hand on the wall. "I'll come back for you." He said softly. Ben put his hand against Asher's on the other side.

"Please don't leave me..." Tears streamed down Ben's face.

"I will get help." Asher said. He couldn't let this family go. Even if he did hate it sometimes. He couldn't let another home slip through his fingers.

Asher put his hat on as he walked down the street. It was mid October and really chilly. He sighed. This was going to be exactly like last time, he thought. The same mistake...

He sat on the curb and closed his eyes for a moment. It came back, like it did every night. Asher sat up slowly, he was in his old school hall... Everything around him was shattered and thrown around. The usually busy building was empty and silent.
He stood slowly and began to walk down the hall, stepping over broken glass and school supplies.

There was a teacher. He started towards her, and she shut the door she was behind and hid. He blinked and kept walking. A feeling of emptiness creeping into his soul and freezing his heart.

Asher began to run. Glass cut a hole in his shoe and scraped his foot. A pencil was sticking out of a locker as if shot out of a cannon. Every locker door was either unhinged or badly dented. He ran faster, looking for someone, anyone at all. If he could just tell them what was going on, if he could explain...

Asher opened his eyes again. He didn't want the dream to continue.  It wasn't a dream, he thought, it was a nightmare. Asher got up off the curb and walked to the nearest breakfast joint. He sat down to order and couldn't help but overhear the conversation going on in the booth behind his.

"What are we going to do? Mom and dad are going to come home and we are going to be gone and the house will probably be blocked." Said a maybe thirteen-ish year old voice.

"I don't know what to do, but we will do something." Said another. Asher thought. Could they be talking about the wall? Did they leave home too? He turned around in his seat.

"Hi, I'm Asher. Um, would you, by any chance have been locked out of your house by an invisible wall?" He groaned inwardly. Wow, great introduction.

The girl looked uncomfortable. "Yes," she said slowly, "we did. And we are trying to find out what caused it and when it will go away."

Asher was thrilled. He wasn't going insane. "Um... Do you mind if I join you?" He asked.

This time the boy looked uncomfortable. He turned to the girl and whispered something and she nodded a few times. "Okay," he said. "You can join us, but we need to know something." He paused and looked at the girl again. She nodded. "Do you know about, or believe in supernatural occurrences?"

Asher inhaled sharply. "No," he lied. "I... I don't know about anything supernatural." The girl looked skeptical.

"Now answer another question." She said calmly. "Are you lying?"

He sighed. If he was going to follow them, they had to know the truth. But not all of the truth. "Yes." He said. "Sometimes," he brought his voice down to a low whisper, "sometimes, I can move things."

The boy gave him an odd look. "I mean, without touching them. You could call it telekinesis." He finished. Both the boy and girl, siblings? He presumed, grinned.

"Cool." The girl said. "My name is Fiona. Welcome to the team. And this is my brother Will." She gestured to the boy.

"Hey, wait!" He exclaimed. "I told you about my supernatural ability, you tell me yours!"

Fiona sighed dramatically. "If you insist." She held up her hand and it burst into flames. Asher gasped a little. Even though he had powers, he wasn't used to other people having or using theirs.

Will tipped over a glass of water on the table and instead of spilling everywhere, it formed a tiny wet cyclone that spun towards Asher. Will snapped his fingers and it disappeared, leaving the table dry. He smiled. "I've been practicing."

"So, fire and water. Cute." Asher said. Let's go." He stood up to leave.

"Sorry, but none of us have gotten our food yet." Will said. "And I'm hungry."

"Very well then." Asher sat down. It was going to be a long day.

After breakfast, Asher walked along the sidewalk with Will and Fiona. "Where are we headed?" He asked.

Fiona shrugged. "I figured at some point the wall would be weaker and thinner. From there, we can maybe get in and find out what's going on."

Asher was annoyed. "You mean you plan on following the wall and hoping that there is some way through? That doesn't seem like a very sound plan."

Now it was Fiona's turn to be annoyed. "Hey, we didn't ask you to come along. Have you got a better idea?" She asked coldly. Asher was stunned, he had no comeback. They walked in silence for a long while.

As they walked, Asher looked up at the sky. They had been following the wall all day, and the sun was beginning to set. He looked down at his feet, his dusty shoes treading heavily on the dirt. They had left town a few hours ago, and we're now walking in the middle of nowhere. It should have scared him, being this far away from anything, but for some reason, it didn't. His feet ached, he had gone long distances on his own before, but not in a while.

Will was leading, which Asher found unusual. All of the few hours he had known Fiona and Will, Fiona had always seemed to be the ringleader. Now Will was taking charge. It bothered him for some reason. Will's hand was pressed firmly against the wall as he walked alongside it. Fiona fell in close behind him, and Asher a little ways behind her. He didn't want to get too close yet, as he didn't really know these people. The sun was now beginning to sink behind the soft hills in the distance. Asher sighed, it was going to be a long road ahead of them.
