Chapter Seven

''Zara look, Rochester is only a mile away now!'' Cade pointed at the sign ahead of them. Zara nodded weakly in reply and grimaced with each step as she walked next to him. Cade turned to her, his eyes full of concern.

''Why didn't you tell me you'd injured your leg? I didn't notice you were limping!'' He slipped his hand under her arm, helping take some of the weight.

Zara flushed, feeling embarrassed. ''Oh, it's nothing, honestly. I was bitten by a dog, it was only a small gash, but it got a bit infected. I've been taking antibiotics so it's much better. I think I've just overdone it a bit today.''

Cade tutted at her ''Zara you can't just ignore infection. Lean on me, I'll help you walk until we get there then I'm going to examine you'' he stated matter-of-factly.

Zara raised an eyebrow with a quizzical look.

Cade laughed, ''I was at University, training to be a doctor. I know a few things''

Zara shot him a sheepish look ''I thought you were a personal trainer or something!'' Immediately mentally kicking herself for giving away that she'd checked out his muscular physique.

Cade chuckled. ''Well that would have been a less stressful career choice! I just enjoy keeping active, I run a lot. I like to clear my head you know?''

Zara knew the feeling well.

After a long, agonising, last mile Zara and Cade walked into the town centre of Rochester. It had the similar quiet, eerie sound of London but the smell was much less potent. They wearily approached a large supermarket, Cade lowered Zara down gently onto a wooden bench outside.

''Stay here, I'll quickly grab some supplies then we will find somewhere safe to spend the night.'' He looked up ''I won't be long, it'll be dark soon.

Zara nodded, too tired to talk. While Cade was inside she looked around her. A large camping shop was opposite the supermarket, ideal for them to spend the night in. The shutter was still pulled down over the front doors, so it looked as though no one had been in there since the vaccinations.

Zara leaned back on the bench, lifting her leg to elevate her ankle. She closed her eyes for a moment.

''Hey sleepyhead''

Zara jolted awake, Cade stood in front of her with a grin. ''I was thinking we could spend the night in there'' he jerked his head towards the camping shop. Zara nodded weakly in agreement. With Cade's help, she pulled herself to her feet. She yawned and stretched her leg which had gone stiff. She noticed his full looking backpack.

''Anything good in there?'' She asked, hopeful.

He chuckled. ''There was quite a bit of food left so we can feast tonight.''

He helped her over to the front of the outdoor shop and leant her against the wall.

''One sec'' He panted as he lifted the heavy shutter doors, groaning under the weight. He then helped Zara hobble inside.

The inside of the shop was large and surprisingly untouched. Zara and Cade stared at the rows and rows of camping equipment. She spotted a clothing section with excitement. Her trainers were pretty worn now and ripped from the dog bite and she needed warmer clothes ready for winter.

''Cade, please take me over to the clothes!''

He shook his head with a bemused expression ''Let me look at that leg first then you can go on your shopping spree''

Zara pouted but obeyed and sat down in a camp chair in front of Cade. He pulled over a cooler box and rested her leg on it, rolling up her trouser leg and untying her shoes. He unwound the bandage and she watched him as he inspected the wound closely before applying some antibacterial cream.

''The good news is it does seem to be healing well. I was afraid I would have to drain the infection with a surgical incision, but I think you will be fine if you keep up the antibiotics.''

Zara grimaced at the thought and felt grateful. ''Thanks, Doctor Cade'' She whispered as his hand lingered on her leg after re-applying the bandage.

He stood up suddenly ''Right now you can go choose some new clothes, your shoes have seen better days.'' He smirked. ''I'll get us some dinner going. Oh, take this with you'' He grabbed a cricket bat and held it out to her ''Lean on this carefully so you aren't putting too much weight on that leg''.

Zara left him setting up the camping stove and hobbled over to the clothing section. Wandering up and down the rails she chose a pair of comfy looking walking shoes, an extra pair of black combats and some thermal fleece jumpers ready for winter. She also picked out a waterproof jacket which folded up small into a little bag, which would come in handy once the wet weather set in.

She walked back over to Cade who was pouring her soup into a bowl along with some crackers to dip in. He held out the bowl for her, which she took eagerly before flopping down onto the chair next to him.

''Tinned fruit for pudding and I found some biscuits. Did you get all the clothes you need?'' He asked, serving himself some dinner too.

Zara swallowed the hot soup before replying ''Yeah should be enough to last through the winter now. There should be blankets and a few extra jumpers on my father's boat still aswell for us to both use''

Cade tilted his head slightly ''Speaking of this boat. Can you actually, um, drive it?''

Zara nodded firmly ''My father taught me to pilot the yacht from a young age, I can navigate the controls fine although we always had 3 crew members. The hard part would be coming into port and mooring, because of its size you would need a few people to guide her in, but my plan is to anchor offshore when we need supplies and just use the jet ski to come ashore.''

Cade's mouth dropped open ''Jet ski? Just how big is this boat?''

Zara smiled ''It's seventy-four feet, bow to stern. It has three cabins, a living area and crew quarters. Plenty of space to store supplies and keep us alive. Seriously though, when we get to Whitstable we need to stock up the boat as much as we can then get out to sea. We will be safe out there at least and no one will be able to find us.''

Cade raised his hand in mock salute ''Aye Aye Captain'' he said with a grin showing his dimples, his eyes sparkling.

Zara rolled her eyes with a smile and continued eating her soup.
