Chapter Eleven

This is a fairly long chapter, so I have broken it up with a few pictures!

Zara stayed silent. She swallowed, processing this new revelation carefully.

Cade hung his head ''Zara I am so sorry I didn't tell you before. I wasn't sure how you would react, and I feel selfish for surviving the vaccine when so many others didn't.'' For a moment he looked like a young boy, with a lost expression on his face.

Zara put her hands on his ''Don't be stupid, I'm not mad. I get why you didn't tell me. I'm so sorry about your little sister, how old was she?''

''Five, she had just started school.'' He replied softly, his eyes glazing over. ''I miss her.''

''It won't be for nothing Cade, I promise. You know what this means don't you? There must be others out there like you, others who are immune. They failed. The government failed, no one was supposed to survive the vaccinations. When the time comes we will make them pay.''

The sun was beginning to set as Zara and Cade walked into the small seaside town of Whitstable. They weaved through the cobbled streets and houses to reach the seafront. The water lapped gently against the shore as they walked along the promenade. Cade's spirits had lifted slightly, Zara was worried about him after he had told her what had happened. They seemed to have a bond between them that wasn't there before.

Cade stopped and squinted in the dark, looking across the beach.

''Hey Zara, the harbour is over there? I thought that's where your dad's boat would be.''

Zara shook her head slightly ''We need to get the keys from the cottage first, my father kept them in his study. We can spend the night there and then head down to the harbour in the morning. I'll have to check the boat over in the daylight before we go out to sea, in case there's any damage. I need to check if it's still there. I don't think my father sold it but I'm hoping he didn't have it taken to our house in Monaco.'' She frowned ''We haven't been there for a few years though, so I doubt it.''

Cade chuckled ''Just how many houses do you own?! I've never even been out of the country!''

Zara looked at Cade with a raised eyebrow ''What, never? That's crazy! There are so many amazing places you should visit''

Cade shook his head ''My dad was born in London, he was a market trader until he met my mum when she came to live in the UK from Greece. She was training to be a nurse at the time and thought job opportunities were better here.''

Zara smiled sadly at hearing Cade speak so fondly of his mother. ''Is that why you were training to be a doctor?''

Cade nodded and smiled sadly ''Partly. My mum died of breast cancer. I guess that's what made me do medical school, plus my dad was struggling. I just wanted to do something for them, you know?''

Zara placed a hand gently on his arm ''I'm so sorry Cade'' She whispered.

A short while later, after walking up a steep footpath, they came to a stop outside a building overlooking the sea. The large house was painted a contemporary white with huge, panoramic glass windows to the front. Cade stared in awe at the pure size of the house as they walked around the building to a side door. Zara punched in a combination on the keypad of a lock box attached to the wall by the door. She opened it and retrieved a set of keys to the house.

Unlocking the door, she gestured Cade inside before locking it behind them.

''Wait here one sec'' She stated before switching on her torch and opening a door to her left. She flipped a switch in the cupboard and the lights came on, lighting up the room. They were in a huge open plan kitchen, made to look even bigger by the glass covering the length of one of the walls, facing out to the sea.

Cade listened as he could hear the faint hum of the kitchen appliances, he looked quizzically at Zara.

She winked at him playfully ''Solar power! All the basic electrics should work in the house now.''

''Cool!'' Cade grinned and walked over to the windows. ''The view must be amazing in the day'' Cade murmured to himself.

Zara nodded excitedly ''Wait until you see the sunrise in the morning, it's absolutely beautiful. Sometimes you can even see dolphins in the shallow water!''

''I would love to see that'' Cade replied then laughed as his stomach gave a long rumble. ''I guess I'm hungry! Any food here?''

Zara reached up to the kitchen cupboards, opening them dramatically for Cade to see ''Ta-Da!''

Cade's mouth dropped open as he took in the vast amount of food, stacked carefully onto the shelves.

Zara smirked at his reaction ''Let's have a bit of everything shall we?''

Cade leaned back in his chair, rubbing his stomach and groaned ''I can't remember the last time I felt so full!''

Zara smiled as she grabbed the plates, chucking them into the sink. She too felt satisfied, the lingering hunger she had experienced for weeks had subsided. She had made them minestrone soup to start, pasta with tuna, tinned hot dogs and even sprinklings of parmesan to go on top.

She turned back to Cade who was smiling at her intently ''What?'' She asked, self-consciously.

He laughed ''Nothing, I'm just happy. Happy to have met you''

''You know what will make us even happier?'' She asked, with a mischievous look. ''A hot shower?''

Cade gasped ''What? How? I hope you aren't messing with me!''

Zara smiled and shook her head ''There's a water storage tank under the house, it collects rainwater, so the house isn't connected to the main water supply. The solar panels heat it'' She shrugged her shoulders ''My father was prepared for storms knocking out the power''

Cade jumped out of his seat ''Race you!''

Zara threw her head back and laughed, before grabbing his hand and leading him to the bathrooms.

Zara wrapped a clean towel around her wet hair. She had been at least half an hour in the shower, not realising until now how dirty she had become. She had stood under the water, scrubbing her skin, until the dirty water pooling at her feet became clear.

She wandered through to her closet, picking out some clean clothes. She fingered the silky dresses hung on the rails, sighing. She settled on a pair of light denim skinny jeans and a plain long-sleeved knitted jumper. She tucked her partly dry curls behind her ear before heading back to find Cade.

She stopped and listened outside the guest bathroom door. She could hear the water running and Cade humming softly. She smiled to herself before wandering through to her father's study. She had never been into the study properly before, but it was as she remembered it as a child.

She would linger in the doorway with her kite, hoping her father would take her down to the beach to fly it. He would tell her ''not now, I'm very busy''. Other times he wouldn't notice her standing there at all.

A solitary desk in the middle of the room looked out over the sea through glass windows like those in the kitchen. The glass windows were sliding doors which led out to a balcony. She walked over to the left wall and reached up, gently lifting down a Van Gough painting to reveal a safe. She keyed in four digits, praying her father hadn't changed the code she had watched him enter when she was a child. The safe clicked and she pulled open the door, reaching her arm into the darkness she pulled out the yacht keys. Her shoulder sagged with relief, that meant the boat would definitely be in the harbour. She started to push the door closed when she noticed a brown envelope at the back. She frowned and pulled it out, opening it to reveal a list of names.

Cade walked in, his hair still wet from the shower. He had changed into a pair of her father's navy jogging bottoms, which she had never actually seen him wear and a white t-shirt. He frowned when he saw her stricken expression. ''Hey what's up? Aren't the keys there?'' His face fell.

Zara stared back at him with wide eyes ''Cade this is a list of all the survivors, all ten thousand of them.''

He raised an eyebrow ''Oh. Well we knew there had to be an official list somewhere, didn't we?''

Zara held the paper in front of him ''Look at the date, Cade. It was dated 5 years ago! Dante was right, they had this planned for years.'' She threw the list back into the safe and slammed the door closed ''How could he?'' She hung her head before feeling Cade's warm arms wrap around her. She closed her eyes, trying to fight back tears. She felt Cade placing little, soft kisses on the side of her head. She pulled her head back and stared into his green eyes before leaning up and kissing him softly on the lips. She felt him freeze, as though startled by the kiss but then his lips softened, and he kissed her back, ferociously. She could feel the urgency and need in his kiss, as he buried his hands in her hair and pulled her body closer to him.

Zara eventually pulled away, flushing as Cade smiled down at her. ''Sorry, that's not really like me. I don't know what came over me.'' She bit her lip and smiled sheepishly.

Cade chuckled ''Well I am incredibly handsome!''

Zara laughed, the tension broken between them. She entwined his fingers with hers and pulled him back towards the kitchen. ''How about a hot chocolate?''

Zara awoke the next morning to the sun starting to stream in through the windows of her bedroom suite, she lay for a moment trying to remember where she was. She could hear the ocean waves and seagulls. She smiled as she looked down at Cade asleep with his lips slightly parted, breathing deeply. They had spent the night comparing childhoods and talking about school and friends before she had fallen asleep with her head on his chest mid-conversation. She had been too tired to even change into her pyjamas.

She gently nudged him awake and he opened his eyes groggily. ''Sup?'' he said sleepily.

Zara pointed to the window ''Sunrise''

They spent the next half an hour in silence watching the sun come up, side by side.

Zara dragged the heavy holdall into the kitchen. She had found it in her father's closet, it was bigger than her backpack, so she decided to use it. Packing in a few items of food and clothing but also some luxuries like cd's from her collection, books and toiletries. She had found Cade a similar bag which she had filled with her father's clothes.

She closed the zipper and looked up as Cade walked into the kitchen, fresh from the shower. His face lit up as he saw her, he walked over planting a kiss on lips and murmured a hello. She smiled back at him as she handed him a coffee.

He took a sip and glanced down at the packed bags. ''Are you sure we have to go? Surely, we could just stay here?''

Zara shook her head ''It's not safe, this house would be sought after if anyone were to find us. Also, the solar power will only work through the summer months, we are lucky there was enough sun to keep the lights on last night. During winter if we came here on holiday the power came from the mains.''

Cade pulled a face ''Shame, I could get used to this type of living'' He stuck his tongue out at her.

Zara rolled her eyes ''You haven't seen the Yacht yet, you won't complain, trust me''

I hope you all liked this chapter, sorry it was a bit long-winded.
