Chapter 50: A World After War

On the third day after the destruction of the Ark, I ventured outside with J-1 to see how lady Izla was faring. The J-3's had brought medical supplies to the surface to keep her sedated and in stable condition while they ran tests on her. There was smoke rising from the direction of where the rock had hit days before. The impact must have sparked a forest fire. But the ground was wet and soft from a heavy rain that must have come at a fortunate time. It put the fire out before it became uncontainable. Even so, the sky was still gray and blanketed with a thick haze.

"Dust and debris that had been thrown into atmosphere from the many impacts." Stated J-1.

"How long do you think it will last?" I asked.

"There is no telling until we venture further out. But I detect that there is still enough sunlight penetration for the growth of certain plant life. This is a good thing."

I nodded my agreement.

The camp was still completely intact. We walked to the cabin where the lady was being kept. Two J-3's watched over her sleeping body. She lay in a bed with monitors attached to her chest and an IV in her arm which kept her in an induced coma. She was far more peaceful than the last time I saw her.

"They are remarkably similar to humans," said the robot thoughtfully. "Only a fraction of a percentage of difference separates your species DNA."

"That's odd." I replied.

"Perhaps. But your two suns were once part of a binary system. Maybe your worlds are more similar than we know. . . It is possible that there is a piece of this story that was lost in time."

Strange words from a strange robot. I wandered off in my thoughts as we stood there looking at the alien being. I remembered that day, way back when. Ghymora was so adamant about the existence of that lost sister star of our sun. She was the first person in the world to propose the specific idea, it is too bad that she never got to see how right she was. But maybe it is better that she did not have to witness the horrors which would come from the star that was later named after her.

"It would really be something to see those worlds in person. To meet any of their people. . . if they were able to survive. Maybe even see the ruins of Nezbahuran."

"Perhaps one day you will. But for now, we have work to do." Said J-1.

"Yeah, I guess you're right. Where do we begin?"
