Chapter 5: Career Beginnings
For me the college years flew by, and after I received my bachelor's degree, I decided to start my career. Jacob finished grad school at MIT and decided to stay there to pursue his own PhD in Astrophysics alongside Ghymora, who had gotten quite the accommodations for that thesis paper of hers. Though most professors passed it off as more of a pseudoscientific theory, she still gained quite the recognition from her fellow peers.
The three of us continued to spend a lot of time together after I was out of school, and I forever remained the odd man out while the two of them got to talking endlessly on their ideas and theories of the universe. Regardless, I was always happy to be with them.
At one point Jacob had told me he started to develop feelings for Ghymora and meant to tell her how he felt. I had been worried about this for a while. Ghymora was a beautiful girl, and more Jacob's type than anyone I could think of, but I knew that Jacob wasn't her type, nor was I.
"I meant to tell you man, but I didn't really think it was my place to out her sexuality like that. If it makes you feel any better, the girl she's seeing is very pretty." I said awkwardly, doing my best to lighten the mood for him. By chance over the last few months, I had seen Ghymora and her girlfriend from a distance, and it was very clear to me that they were intimate.
"Why do you think she didn't tell us?" Jacob asked, more distraught than I had ever seen my friend.
"Who knows, she did say her parents were pretty strict growing up, maybe they have more traditional views, and she just wasn't ready to be public about it? It's hard to say but I'm sure she's got her reasons." I answered hoping that my words would offer some semblance of comfort for him.
I could tell Jacob was a little heartbroken from this revelation, but he cared too much for his friendship to let that get in the way. Not long after he was back to his old self, and he and Ghymora remained thick as a couple of big-brained thieves.
My family had money, which I was very fortunate for. As soon as I graduated, I jumped into real estate, just as my parents had hoped. It wasn't that it was my dream to simply own and manage property for the rest of my life like they did. But I was very well educated now in the art of making and maintaining money at this point, and as most wealthy people know, real estate is one of the best and most foolproof ways of doing so. By the time the two of them had finished getting their Ph.D.'s, I had taken an $800,000 loan from my parents and turned it into a nine-million-dollar real estate portfolio. Like I said, I was fortunate. Most people don't have the kind of privilege that I had been given by my family, but then there are some that have much more. It is an unfair world, that's the cold hard truth, and I was planning on taking every advantage of it to further myself. I might not have had that groundbreaking intelligence that my best friend was blessed with, but I did have undeniable drive. A drive to gain the power needed to make a true impact on the world. I knew the day would soon come when I would join forces with Jacob to make that happen.
