Chapter 43: The J-3's
J-1 led Morales and I to the door at the end of the long hallway. I had not realized quite how large this door was before, a fair bit larger than most of the others except for the main entry ways in the shelter.
"The code is 091992." Said J-1 as it typed the numbers into the keypad with its gentle metal finger.
"091992, does that have any sort of significance?" I asked.
J-1 just looked towards Morales as it began to pull open the large door.
"It's my birthday." She said, the hollow look in her eyes fading just a little.
What was revealed to us when the lights came on was a sight far beyond what we expected to see. The room was larger than any of the others before it. And inside stood not just a few robots, but an army of hulking metallic figures. Hundreds of them, more than eight feet in height, with armor twice as thick as the J-2's. Along the walls surrounding the army were tall racks.
"Are those guns?" I asked J-1.
"Yes, state of the art armor piercing weapons," said the robot. "The metal cases alongside them are filled with ammunition as well."
"What exactly would be the need for this hoard of weaponry and soldiers?" asked Morales, the melancholy was still thick in her voice.
"He never said the exact reason for them, it is overkill in my opinion. More than would be needed to protect your small group. . . He said we would know when the time came. But if I were to take a guess, this force appears to be intended more for an assault than purely defense." Said J-1.
"Yeah, I'd say so," I added.
The three of us stood there for a moment peering over the horde of robotic goliaths. Their metal was dark and unmarked, their faces were heavily armored, with only a thin visor like screen to see from. The sight was ominous, and looking upon it made us feel even more fear of what was to come.
"We should call it for the night," I turned and said to Morales. "Tomorrow we can bring Tomiya here and tell her all that J-1 has told us. But I promised Oshie I'd show her our old summer camp, so it will have to wait until after."
I thought Morales would react with more frustration, but she simply agreed. Her eyes were distant in thought. I couldn't blame her, with all that she had just learned, the overwhelming doubt she now had that the father of her child would return, and probably so much more. She remained quiet and distant as we walked back to our sleeping quarters. I left her in the hall and snuck quietly into the room where my daughter and wife slept soundly, cuddled together in the large bed. I dared not wake them, so in my exhaustion I sprawled out onto the decorative couch that sat off to the side and fell into a deep sleep.
