Chapter 8

"Carolyn!" says a very soothing and comforting voice. The voice of Olive. "Carolyn, dear. Are you okay?" I'm so confused about everything right now. As I open my eyes, I start to understand a little more. I am laying in a bed that is surrounded by walls and only walls. The walls are steel and white. Olive is standing right above my head looking down on me. But the weirdest thing I've realized is that I'm not in my Solitudo anymore.

"Where am I?" I ask with a very raspy and tired voice.

"Carolyn, we had to take you out of your Solitudo because you passed out in the arena," says Olive in a concerned tone.

"But I thought you were forced to leave people in the arena until the time is up? You can't take them out under any circumstance," I say.

"True," says Olive. "But, after we saw what you saw, we had to take you out."

"What do you mean after you saw what I saw?" I ask. I literally saw a bird how dangerous could that be?

"Well, once you passed out, the Principles and I soon figured out that you have a special talent known as 'The Gift,'" says Olive. I'm too confused to ask what that is so I let her continue. "We had to get you out immediately because we no longer needed you in the Solitudo and we also wanted to keep you safe because you are the first person to have The Gift in fifty years. Therefore, the Principles and I aren't one-hundred percent sure that your body works the same way as the rest of the worlds' body works. We were scared that you would die in there. But luckily you're fine!"

"Why is The Gift so special?" I ask being so utterly confused.

"Oh, right, I forgot to tell you," says Olive. "The Gift is a special talent that not many people have in Silva. Actually, you are the first one in fifty years to have this talent. The Gift allows a person in that exact moment to see things that are going to happen in the future. But there is another thing that comes with this 'Gift'. You can also see things that you desire at that specific time that can save you from terrible things including death. Most of the time, it is pretty easy to tell which one is which, but sometimes, it is hard to determine so you have to be able to understand the consequences of having this Gift."

"Which occupation group will I be in?" I ask.

"That's the thing," says Olive. "The last person who had The Gift, Lilianna Ventola, started working with the government once she turned eighteen. She was able to detect what would happen in the future and would help the government change things to keep Silva safe from future harm. Because she worked with the government and was the savior of our world, she got more money than any other occupational group would receive. She soon became rich and had a very large house. Some people thought that Lilianna didn't need all of that money and they thought that the government could use some of Lilianna's earnings for the poor. The government didn't listen to the people's protests and Lilianna was still earning lots of money. The people became so outraged that they came into Lilianna's house one night and killed her. We don't want you to work for the government in public because we do not want you to turn out the same way as Lilianna. Therefore, we will assign you the occupation of a Ministrator once you turn eighteen but we will tell the people you asked to do this in private. This means that you will work for the government in private without people knowing. You are only allowed to tell your family about this."

This is too much to take in after passing out. The only sentence I can make out is, "Can I tell Perry?"

Olive sighs and says, "I'm so sorry, dear. But no." I think my heart just stopped.

"What?" I ask. "How can I be honest with him and how can he know what I'm up to if I can't tell him that I'm...different."

"I'm sorry, Carolyn but you cannot tell anyone but your family. Chance Stanford's orders," says Olive. So I learn that I'm not normal and that I can't tell my best friend why. This could not be worse.

"When do I get to go home?" I ask trying to change the subject.

"In four hours," says Olive. "We want to let you go when your official time is up so that people don't get suspicious about you leaving early. Until then, rest your head. I know it is a lot to take in. See you soon!"

Then she walks out of the room and leaves me to think about what I just learned about myself. My true identity that has been hidden for fourteen years. My identity that can't be shared with the love of my life.
