Chapter 10

When we start to get tired, I ask Perry if he wants to stay the night and he says yes. Things aren't going too well with his parents and he's been coming over a lot recently.

When we walk up to my room, Aspyn is sleeping on the floor with a pillow and a small blanket from my bed. I get some more blankets and pillows from our hall closet to put on my bed for Perry and I. Once we're settled into bed, I turn on my side to face Perry. He was already facing me when I turned so he talks first.

"I was so worried about you today," he chokes. "I couldn't focus on reading, I couldn't eat, I couldn't even sit down for Christ's sake." As he says this I can see a tear run down his cheek, and I have never been more attracted to him in my entire life. "Carolyn, I don't know what I would do without you."

"Perry," I say trying to hide my emotions. "You have no idea how much I need you." And as I say this, I kiss Perry lightly on the lips and then move closer to him, placing my hand on his chest. I eventually fall asleep to him rubbing my hair and everything finally feels okay.

I wake up at about 8:00 to find that the rest of the bed is made with a note on top of the comforter.

It says:

Dear Carolyn,

I need to talk to you about something. Meet me at our spot at 10:00? By the way, thank you for letting me stay at your place last night. I definitely had the best sleep of my life. Can't wait to see you!

Love,

Perry

I'm so glad that Perry wants to meet me. Even though I can't say anything to him, I hate the feeling of being alone after finding out that I have an insanely rare gift. Besides, Perry always finds a way to cheer me up.

Before I wake up Aspyn to walk her home, I check on Rose to see how she's doing. I walk into her room to find her reading a novel on her bed, looking better than ever.

"Carolyn, you're home!" she screams as she runs off of her bed to come hug me.

"Shh," I say. "Keep your voice down. Your going to wake up father." I could care less about my father, It's Aspyn I don't want Rose to wake up. "I'm going to The Plaza with Perry at 10:00. Do you want to come and play with your friends?"

"Yes, please!" she says. "I actually made a new friend yesterday when we went before your Solitudo. His name is Roux."

"Oh, so you have a boyfriend," I tease.

"He's not my boyfriend he's just a boy who is my friend," she says. "Just like you and Perry." And as she says this I realized that I haven't told her yet about what happened right before my Solitudo. I don't think I should tell her yet anyways. Perry and I never really talked about us being a couple so I don't think it's necessary to tell anyone else until it's official. If it will ever be official.

"I know," I laugh. "I was just teasing you. Why don't you start getting ready. I need to give something to Ms. Dorothy so I'll be right back to pick you up." I don't want to tell Rose about Aspyn yet because her story was very unusual and I don't think Rose would understand it all. I don't really think Aspyn wants her story to get out just yet either.

"Okay, see you in a bit," she says.

As Aspyn and I walk out of my house she says, "I know this is none of my business and I barely know you yet but you said last night that you and Perry are friends. But I'm pretty sure friends don't kiss each other goodnight." She pauses for a minute. "I just think that if you have strong feelings for someone and your confident about your relationship, you shouldn't keep any of that hidden to the world."

Even though I think that Aspyn should stay out of my personal issues, she does have a point. And because I can't protest I simply just nod my head and say, "You're right, Aspyn." We then walk in silence until we reach her house.

"Thanks again for letting me stay at your place," she says.

"It's no problem," I say. "Good luck with finding your brother and mother. If you ever need me, you know where I live." And as I say this she smiles and closes the door behind her.

"I'll meet you at the clock tower at 11:30," I say to Rose as we enter The Plaza.

"Okay, see you then," she says as she walks towards a group of kids her age. Once I see that she is okay I walk in the opposite direction towards our spot.

When I arrive at our spot Perry is already there. But he isn't in a tree. He's sitting down on a red and white checkered blanket with a picnic basket, two glasses of water, and a flower bouquet on it. I laugh because of how cheesey it is but also because of how sweet it was of him to plan this for me. He gets up from the blanket to come meet me.

"Carolyn, would you care to dine with me," he says in a fancy accent while putting his arm out for me to take.

I take his arm and laugh,"I would gladly accept."

We walk towards the picnic and when we reach it he grabs both of my hands and says,"I know that yesterday was a very nerve racking day for you so I didn't want to bother you or distract you or something. So I waited until today to celebrate your success during your Solitudo and to celebrate your birthday of course."

"Aw," I say. "This is so sweet. You didn't have too."

He kisses me quickly and says, "What kind of boyfriend would I be if I didn't celebrate your birthday with you."

"A very bad one I guess."

"A very bad one indeed," he says as we sit down on the blanket. He pulls out two sandwiches; a turkey one and a ham one. He hands the turkey to me and starts unwrapping the ham for him. I'm not surprised he knows what my favorite sandwich is because its my favorite food and I talk about it a lot.

When we finish the sandwich Perry pulls out a fancy container from his pocket. He takes a deep breath and says, "Carolina Hawthorn, we have known each other for six years and within that time I haven't gone a day without thinking of you. Yes, we've only been together for a couple days now, but I think I can speak for the both of us when I say that I've been in love with you for the longest time. I didn't express my feelings for you sooner because I was worried that I would ruin our friendship. But not being with you sooner was my deepest regret and I am so grateful that you kissed me." He opens the box and inside is a necklace. The charm is a gold rectangle that says 3-15.

"You remember the date we met?" I say choking back tears.

"Of course I do," he says. "I may not have known it then but that was the day I met the love of my life." I am not the type of person to get emotional, but the way he worded everything made me feel so special and I have never felt so loved in my entire life.

I don't know what else to do but to attach my lips to his. After a few seconds I whisper, "Thank you for being my best friend for six years."

"There is no need to thank me," he says. "It was my pleasure." And as he says this we both lay down on the blanket, my head on his chest and our hands linked. I would do anything to live in this moment forever.
