Authors note & chapter 1: The Grundel and I

I do not own the Ghostbusters, slimer or
the ghost known as a Grundle. This is a fan fiction based on Ghostbusters movies and the two cartoons the real ghost busters and Extreme Ghostbusters (the spin off of the real ghostbusters cartoon show.)

I'd like to thank Midiclorians for the new cover of this story...

The picture above is the Grundle

Third person POV

Kylie Griffen had grown up with a love of the paranormal. Her childhood best friend Jack had been taken by a ghost known as the Grundel when she was a child and was never seen or heard from again. That is until years later. Kylie discovered that Jack had been turned into a Grundel. Eventually, Kylie and her friends were able to return Jack to normal and the Grundel. What then didn't know, was that he wound up having dormant paranormal abilities from that encounter. Abilities that he passed onto his and Kylie's daughter when I she born. They named her Catherine Rosealynn Griffen.

It seemed, that from the very beginning ghosts were attracted to their daughter. Slimer fell in love with her the moment he saw her. He decided that it was his job to protect her, much like a guard dog would.

Catherine was an amazingly unique child and I had to wonder what laid ahead in her future....

Grundel POV

I hated being trapped in this containment unit. I longed to once again be free so that I might see my beloved Kylie once more. In fact, the hope of seeing her once more is what fueled my desire to not give up trying to escape. I knew that all I had to do was remain patience and eventually an opportunity for escape would present itself and it did. "Free at last! Now, to find Kylie...."

It didn't take me long to find my target. I frowned. How long had I been in that wretched unit? Kylie was no longer a pure child or even a teenager, she was now a mature woman with. I sighed in disappointment, "it seems that I've been gone much longer then I had originally anticipated... My beautiful Kylie is now all grown up. Whatever am I to do now?" I mused as I watched Kylie go about her duties. However, my disappointment soon disappeared when I spot a small child enter the room.

"Mommy, I'm hungry when's dinner?" The child asked sweetly.

"Dinner isn't for a few hours. Besides, you just had a snack." Kylie replied.

"No I didnt." I replied.

"Catherine, I just gave you a snack a few minutes ago." Kylie scolded her.

"Slimer ate it." The child replied.

"Slimer" Kylie called to him and he floated into the kitchen with a smile. "What have I told you about stealing my daughter's snacks?" Kylie scolded him and slimer sighed dejectedly.

"Me was hungwry." Slimmer grumbled.

"That's no excuse, your always hungry." Eduardo replies and slimmer frowns.

"Why you!!!!" Slimmer replies in irritation and I noticed the child can't help but giggle.

"Alright, that's enough you too." Kylie scolds them.

"Can I have a new snack mommy?" The child asked sweetly.

"Mommy? Humm. Interesting, very interesting in deed. Perhaps all is not hopeless after all. This child maybe the key to Kylie's undoing. How to convince the child to come out and play, well, that might prove to be a difficult task. Difficult, but not impossible." From that moment on, I would come to the child's window every night and watch her sleep. Finally, one night I decided to beckon her to come out and play.

Catherine POV

"Hiya Catherine. Aren't you going to say hello?" I shook my head no.

"I'm not suppose to talk to strangers. My mommy and daddy said so...."

"That's very wise of your mommy and daddy Catherine. Very wise in deed. My name Catherine, is Grundel. You are Catherine. So now we know each other, correct?"

"I guess so."

"Why don't you Come out and play Catherine?" Again I should my head. I tossed and turned in my bed whimpering wanting nothing more then for this scary voice to go away. Unfortunately, he returned night after night. "Why don't you want to come out and play?" The Grundel asked sadly a few days later.

"I'm not supposed to talk to owa go anywhewe with stwangas now please go away...."

"Now Catherine, we've been over this. I'm not a stranger. In fact, I've known your mother and father for years. They wouldn't mind if you came out to play... Come little Catherine, I'll take you away, into a land of enchantment. Come little Catherine, the times come to play, here in my garden of shadows...."

I whimper once more and am relieved when Slimer came in to check on me. Upon seeing the Grundle he instantly began making noise as if trying to usher the Grundle away. However, the Grundle mearly smiled. "Oh, come now little fella, I mean the child no harm."

When Slimer refused to go away and continued to his sound of alarm the ghost frowned. Then turning to me he smiled and replied. "I'll stop by another time when your guard ghost isn't around to spoil our fun. But rest assured child, you will come out and play. One way or another, you will join me of your own free will." The Grundle replied with a sinister chuckle and with that he disappeared right before my dad and the others rushed into my room.

"Slimer what's gotten into you?!" My dad and the others groaned. "Don't you know what time it is?"

Slimer made funny noises and pointed towards the window. My dad and the others looked out but didn't see anything. "Go back to sleep Slimer! You were having a bad dream." After this happened several nights in a row the others decided they had enough.

"That's it! OUT! There will be no more ghosts for nursemaid in this house! You can sleep outside!" Edwardo replies and I frown and let out a low growl.

Slimer made a sad dejected sound and looked pleadingly at the others but they all pointed and agreed with my mother "go!"

"No! Please don't make Slimmer go away. He's only trying to protect me from the bad creature..."

"Honey, what are you talking about?"

"For over a week now, some creepy monster in a trench coat and hat has been coming to the window each night. He keeps asking me to come out and play. Tonight he said that one way or another, I would eventually accept his invitation."

At this my mom's face went white as a sheet momentarily. "What did you say?"

"That the monster at the window keeps asking me to come out and play? Why?" I reply looking confused as the adults exchange semi worried glances between them.

"No. It can't be. We defeated him, he can't have escaped the containment unit..." My mother pauses and then glares at me her eyes flashing in anger. "You know better then to make up such wild stories young lady!"

"But it's true. There really was a creature at my window asking me to come out and play."

"Enough! I don't want to hear any more about this phantom ghost of yours young lady, or you will be grounded!" My mother replies.

"Relax Kylie, let me handle this. Catherine, Slimmer has been waking everyone up with this nonsense of a phantom apparition for over a week. We are all tired of it." Eduardo replies.

"For once, I agree with you Edwardo. For the next few days Slimer sleeps downstairs, not in your room." My mother replies and immediately tears fill my eyes and I begin to sob.

My father sighs and runs his hands through his hair. He looks at me sadly. "Catherine, it's just for a few days." My father replies trying to reason with me.

"NO! I want Slimer!" I reply with a wail.

"Catherine, please try and understand...."

"I want SLIMER!" I reply continuing to sob.

Unbeknownst to everyone, the Grundle watched the scene unfold with extreme interest and he chuckled in amusement. They were making me angry. Perhaps, it wouldn't be so hard to convince me to come out and play after all.

"Catherine Rosealynn Griffen, that is ENOUGH! Stop this foolish behavior this instant! Or Slimer will be banned from your room for a month! Is that what you want?" My mother demanded irritatedly and I let out a small whimper and begin to sniffle, tears still streaming down my face.

I looked at my father pleadingly and he sighed and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Ky, that's not fair."

"Jack! We have to be united on this. If you contradict me every time she gives you the puppy dog eyes, she will never learn to respect my authority or judgement. She has to learn that this type of behavior won't be tolerated..."

"Agreed. Your mother is right Catherine, this behavior is unacceptable. You can't throw a fit every time something doesn't go your way. I hate to do this, but Slimer is banned from sleeping with you for the rest of the week."

"But...."

"Keep arguing and Slimer will be banned from
Your room permanently. So what's it going to be Catherine?" My mother demands.

"Fine. No Slimer for the rest of the week, but don't expect me to be happy about it." I grumble as everyone heads back to bed.

"Say goodnight to Slimer and then I'll tuck you into bed ok?" Daddy says kissing my forehead.

I nod but can't stop the tears from streaming down my face. "Night night Slimer." I said giving him a hug and kiss and letting out a small whimper.  My father sighed he hated seeing me sad. After everyone left he sat down on the edge of my bed.

"I know you think that we are being unfair, but enough is enough. Slimer has woken everyone up in the middle of the night for over a week now and there has never been any sign of any paranormal activity at your window. Your description of said imaginary creature only served to fuel your mother's anger."

"But it's true.... A monster really did appear at my window and ask me to come out and play... Why won't you believe me? Why won't anyone believe me?" I whimper tearfully as my father tucks me into bed.

At this, my father sighs and wraps me in a hug and gives me an apologetic smile. "Shhhh. Everything will turn out alright in the end..."'My father replies as he turns to go.

"Please don't go daddy. I'm scared." " I whimpered as tears began to stream down my face once more.

My father sighs. "Shhhh. There's no need to be afraid. Your mother and I and Slimer are all right down the hall. No one is going to hurt you, in promise." With that, my father closes the door his eyes filled with sadness.

Jack POV

I sighed the sound of my little girl's cry's breaking my heart. Something wasn't right.. Catherine has never lied before and she seemed genuinely scared. "Are we doing the right thing Kylie? Maybe forcing Slimer to sleep downstairs for the next week wasn't such a good idea after all." I said with a sigh.

"We have to stand united on this Jack. I know this seems harsh and a bit unfair, but Catherine has to understand that she can't make up stories like that. It isn't funny and it isn't a game."

"But she seemed adamant that she saw something at the window. I could tell that she was genuinely afraid. What if she's isn't making it up? What if some creature really is trying to convince her to follow them? Shouldn't we be concerned?"

"You and I both know that's not possible Jack. There's only one ghost who lures children out to play and he is safely locked in the containment unit. Whatever Slimer is supposedly seeing and has convinced Catherine into seeing, it isn't the Grundel."

"How can you be sure?"

"Because, the guys and I recaptured him and re-contained him years ago. It isn't him. And Catherine needs to learn that lying to protect Slimer is wrong. The punishment stands Jack."

The Grundle kept his word a few days after Slimer had been banned from sleeping in my room he stopped by my window once more. "Come out and play Catherine."

"No."

"Come on open the window and let me in. We can have lots of fun. I just want to be your friend."

"Go away and leave me alone! You got me into trouble." I replied angrily.

At this, the Grundel chuckles in amusement. "Let me guess, Kylie refused to believe that I was free?"

"How do you know my mother's name?"

"Oh, I've known Kylie for years. Why, even her best friend Jack answered my call to come out and play."

"You know my Daddy?"

"Why yes. He was once my protégé. But enough about me, are you going to come out and play or not?"

"Can I have sometime to think about it?"

"Time is the one thing that I don't like to waste. Since you don't want to invite me in and you don't want to come out and play, I'll just have to go find someone who will join me. Perhaps your friend Tina. I'm sure she'd be happy to take up my offer to come out and play." The Grundle replied with an evil grin.

"Your the creature who has been kidnapping all those children aren't you?"

"Me? Kidnap children? Never. I simply invite them to come out and play. And those who do never want to go home. I really must be going now. So many children like your friend Tina to befriend."

"Wait. Please don't hurt them." I begged causing the Grundle to smile once more.

"Now, who said anything about hurting anyone? I never hurt children. I just help them to have fun. I never force a child to come out and play. The children come out and play of their own free will and well, they just never want to go home. Anyway, I best be going, I'm burning moonlight." The Grundel said with a wave. "Think about my offer."

"I can't." I replied.

"That's a shame." The Grundle replied and with that he disappeared.

The next day, I heard that my friend Tina had gone missing and I knew instantly what had happened. The creature had kept his word he had gone after Tina and she had willingly accepted his offer to "come out and play."

"Tina's the third child to go missing this week. Are we sure this isn't something paranormal?" I heard my father ask the other ghostbusters late one night.

"Absolutely. There is only one paranormal ghost who is known for kidnapping children and he is safely locked up in the containment unit. His name is the Grundle and we recaptured him several years ago when you and Kylie were still teenagers." My godfather Egon replied.

"Papa Egon?"

"Catherine, what are you doing still up at this time of night?" Egon asked surprised to see me.

"I couldn't sleep. Papa Egon, what does a Grundle look like?"

"He ummm, you know what, it doesn't matter sweetheart. The Grundle is gone forever and he is never coming back." Grandpa Egon replies.

"But what does a Grundle looks like?" I asked more determined to find out all I could about this Grundle creature.

"It couldn't hurt to answer her questions Egon." Janet replies.

"Yeah Egon, what harm could it do to tell her  about a ghost who we captured years ago?" Uncle Edwardo replied.

"I'm not so sure that's a good idea... I don't want to scare her. Let's not discuss this in front of her ok?" My mom replied.

"Haven't  you learned anything yet? Knowledge is power. Withholding this information from her won't do her any good. So let's go ahead and answer her questions. Perhaps she can help us find out if there is a creature targeting children."

"Absolutely not! She will not be used at bait." My mom and dad replied.

"I wasn't suggesting that we use her as bait. I was suggesting that perhaps she might be able too talk to her classmates and see if they've seen anything strange."

"I agree with her parents, Edwardo. It's too risky." Egon replied and Winston and the others agreed.

"Garret, old buddy, back me up here. Won't you?" Edwardo replied.

"I wish I could but..."

I was starting to loose my patience. "Enough!" I yelled angrily causing the entire group to look at me in shock. " I want to help! Besides, this is all my fault. If only I had done as he asked, then he never would have taken Tina or the others."

"Who? Who took Tina? Who are you talking about? What do you mean if only you had done as he asked?" My mother asked worriedly.

"Never mind. It's not like your going to believe me.. After all, Slimer snd I tried telling you about this creature last week. Your response was to call me a liar and punish me by banishing Slimer from my room for the week." I reply bitterly.

"Catherine, I don't think that this is such a good idea. This might give you nightmares." My mother replied.

At this, I frown. "Your kidding me right? I'm not afraid of the boogie man, or the fear ghost  or any other ghost, so why would I be afraid of this Grundle ghost? Come on, I ain't afraid of no ghost. Please, I want to do this. I need to do this. Let me talk to my classmates and see if anyone had seen anything unusual. What's to say that whatever is taking my classmates won't wind up taking me? Now would someone please tell me what I want to know? Who is, or rather what is, a Grundle and what do they look like?"

"She's got a point Kylie. It must help if she's prepared." Egon replied with a sigh. "A Grundle is a ghost who wears a long back overcoat with a black hat. He has green skin and a wide grin. He lures children out into the night by telling them that together they will have all sorts of fun. Fun that adults won't let them have. He convinces them to do bad things and as they do they become more and more like him until they eventually turn into a Grundle themselves. However, like I said, I highly doubt that these disappearances have anything to do with him. We trapped him years ago and he is safely in the containment unit. All the children that had been turned into Grundle's were returned to their normal selves. So it can't possibly be a Grundle."

"Thanks papa Egon." I replied giving him a great big hug. I yawned and stretched my arms out wide. "I'm sure you guys will figure it all out."

"I think it's time that you were in bed." My father replied as I stifled a yawn.

"But I'm not sleepy."

My dad smiled "Yes, are Sweetheart."

"No I'm not." I replied unable to hold back a yawn.

"Sleepy or not, it's time for all good little princess's to be in bed. You are a princess aren't you?" My dad asks with a smile and a slight wink and I nod. "Then you must go to sleep. After all, Princess's need their beauty sleep." He said bopping me on the nose causing me to giggle. "Alright, go give everybody a hug and kiss and let's get you back to bed."

"Ok daddy. Night night." I replied as I rubbed my hands across my eyes and yawned once more. "Come on Slimer....Let's go to sleepy."

"Catherine, your punishment has not ended. Slimer remains here."

"Aww man." Slimer whined and I frowned.

"But.... But.." I sigh knowing that if I continued to argue then my mother would extend Slimer's banishment from my room. "Ok. Goodnight Slimer." I replied sadly.

"Goodnight Catherine. Sleep tight." Rolland replies.

"Don't let the ghost bugs bite." Edwardo replies as he scuffled my hair.

"Edwardo!" The others scolded him and I giggled.

"I won't." I reply but I refused to smile as I was still unhappy with the fact that Slimer couldn't sleep with me. I felt safer when he was in my room with me. "Goodnight everyone." I said flashing them all a fake smile before turning and heading to my room. As I closed my door, I frowned I now knew who I was dealing with. No matter what it took I would prove to the others that he was real and I would rescue my friends. I just wasn't sure how just yet....

Jack's POV

After I made sure Catherine was in bed, I turned to the others. "Guys, I think we've been too hard on Slimer."

"What? Are you kidding? Too hard on him? No way! He's been waking us up in the middle of the night. I say he's getting what he deserves." Edwardo replies.

"Think about it guys, when did Slimer start waking us up?"

"I don't know I lost track. Now if you'll excuse me, I'd like to go to bed. Unlike you married  folks some of us actually need their beauty sleep." Edwardo replied with a frown. I stiffled a laugh. Edwardo still hadn't gotten over the fact that Kylie had married me.

I ignored Edwardo's comments and continued to explain my train of thought. "Slimer started alerting us during the night a few days after children started disappearing. What if, Catherine is telling us the truth? What if, she did see the creature that is taking the children? What if, whatever is taking these children tried to take Catherine a few nights ago? What if, Slimer had not interfered and Catherine had become the creature's next victim? I think Slimer might have seen the creature and he was trying to warn us." I replied.

"Well there is only one way to find out." Egon replied.

"Slimer would you come here for a moment?" Egon called.

"Aye aye captain er Egon." Slimer replied. A few minutes later Slimer floated into the room only to become very nervous when he noticed that all eyes were on him. "Ahh. Bye bye!" Slimer replied and with that he dashed out of the room as quick as he could.

"Slimer wait, please. I need your help. If you won't do it for me, then do it for Catherine."

"Cathawine?" Slimer replied looking at me warily.

"Yes. You see, I think the others are wrong. You did see something those nights that you woke up didn't you?"

"You won't believe me." Slimer replies sadly.

"Yes, I will. Please Slimer, tell me what it was you saw outside Catherine's window."

"Me don't know...." Slimer replies hesitantly.

"Please. If we don't stop this creature that is taking these children it may come after Catherine next.... Can I at least show you some pictures of ghosts to see if any look familiar?"

"Ok."

We flipped through several pictures "could it be this one?" I asked as I showed Slimer a picture of a Wewe Gombel. A female ghost known to kidnap children who's parents were abusive and treats them as her own until the child's parents repent of their cruel behavior. Slimer shook his head no. I showed him a picture of a kinderfanger and again he said no. After going through well over 30 pictures of known ghosts or creatures known to kidnap children I was beginning to give up. Then we came across the photo of the Grundel. I click to
go to the next photo but Slimer points frantically. "What? You want me to go back to the other picture?"

"Uh-huh." Slimer nods.

I glance at the picture in concern. "Your sure this is who you saw at the window the other night?"

"Uh-huh." Slimer replies with a nod.

"Oh no." I reply with a groan running my fingers through my hair.
