Prologue

"Make peace with your broken pieces."

I read the quote that popped up immediately on my newsfeed after opening my social media for the first time since the breakup. I hate when random quotes find their way to you at the most convenient time as if reminding you of things you've been pushing at the back of your head.

'It looks like I need to deactivate my Facebook account again,' I bitterly noted.

Soon after, I quickly realized that scrolling through social media isn't as appealing as it was before. Either I'm quickly losing interest in having a (virtual) social life, or I haven't fully regained the energy to be doing this at 6:00 a.m. with only a cup of coffee and a few slices of bread for breakfast.

'What time is my first period again? Seven?'

I immediately checked my class schedule. Some people find it weird that I made a screenshot of my schedule as my lockscreen wallpaper, but at this point, I don't care what they think of it. They're not the ones who transferred to a new school, anyway. Aside from that, I find it very helpful since I tend to forget a lot of things lately, one of which is the tumbler my father gave me as a Christmas gift last year.

"One hour before class. I might as well wait inside the room," I murmured to myself and stood up from the bench.

The morning rays of sunshine bathed the Eastwood Central University in natural light, seemingly amplifying the colors of my surroundings. When I first stepped foot on campus a few days ago, the first thing I noticed was how large the university is. Most of the college buildings are at a "walkable" distance apart, depending on who you ask for directions. At the heart of the university, just a few meters beyond the entrance, a crow statue stood to greet the students. I found that amusing since most schools would have statues of their founders or local heroes displayed in the public, but a crow? Interesting choice.

I found out about a lot of interesting things in my few days as a new student.

One of which is the circulating rumors I heard in the cafeteria yesterday while I was trying to finish an essay.

I know it's not cool to be eavesdropping on other people's conversations, but I couldn't help the curiosity in me. Either that or I was just a lonely girl who had nothing else to do in that fleeting moment of boredom.

"The ghost was seen last Friday night too," one girl said to her friend.

I heard a gasp.

"From what I've heard, the guard on duty also heard footsteps in the library a few days ago! Do you think...?"

"Who else would plague The Eastwood Archives every night? Only the Library Ghost!"

Library Ghost?

I'd be lying if I told you that didn't pique my interest. Standing just a few steps from the college entrance, I spun around to catch a glimpse of the building a few blocks away from here. The public library is usually the last place I'd visit on an ordinary day, but I have no immunity to the temptation of ghost stories.

Soon, my phone buzzed with a new notification. Opening the message, I was relieved to find it was just my cousin Julie checking in on me with an invitation to accompany her to a friend's birthday party later. Another attempt to force me to meet new people. I smiled and quickly texted back.

To: Julie

Can't. I have to do something tonight. Thanks anyway.

Not a heartbeat later, she replied.

From: Julie

On a Thursday night? Wtf! Ebony don't tell me you have plans already.

Stealing another glance at the public library, I knew it was a stupid decision. This is exactly the reason why I haven't befriended anyone yet. Aside from the fact that I see no reason to form any more attachments in this town, I knew I'd rather be left alone.

To: Julie

I already have plans this evening, sorry.
Brb gotta go to class!

That was the beginning of my little adventure.
