On a busy morning, thousand of people passed the metro station. Most were rushing to work or school, it was rush hour.
A man sat on a bench. In the middle of people pushing each other to get to his destination, the man took out a violin from his bag. He played 6 bach pieces for 45 minutes.
And from thousands of people passing him by, only 6 stopped and stayed for a while, 20 gave him money but doesn't even bother to stop. The man collected $32.
The one who paid him the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother hurried him along, but he stopped to watch the man played his violin. When his mother pushed hard, the kid finally continued walking, turning his head back along the way. This happened to a few more children, and all their parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
No one knew that the man was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. Two days before, he played at a theatre in Boston. He sold out the tickets worth $100 per seat.
And this story is interesting to me. Because it raises questions like: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?
