Chapter 4

Hiccup's POV

I got on Toothless and we took off. I need a flight to clear my mind. What my mom said to me gave me the shivers.

~Flashback~

"Mom? You wanted to see me?" I asked as I walked into her room.

"Yes Hiccup." She nodded sweetly and beckoned to a chair.

"Is there something wrong?" I asked uneasily as I sat down. It's never good when your mom wants to see you. It can be really serious, I might have done something horribly wrong.

"Nothing's wrong. Hiccup, you're a grown man now, I believe that it's time for marriage." Mom said.

"Marriage?" I blurted out. "But mom, I'm not ready for this kind of stuff. I still haven't even got used to being chief yet, there's an awful lot to do. I don't believe this is the time for marriage."

"I'm positive that you are ready. At this age, you really ought to be married. Astrid-"

"Mom, I'm too young for this." I cut in.

"Nonsense, did you know that when I was your age, this was the time that I married your father."

"Still, I don't want to get married. Astrid's great, but I don't think that I want to marry, not right now. Or maybe... I don't know. I haven't thought anything about marriage. I don't even think I wanna marry."

"She loves you, you love her. I don't see why you two shouldn't be married. Besides, Astrid has hinted a little."

"Mom, I really, really don't want to get married. There's so much responsibility that I'm holding right now, my hands are too full for marriage. Being chief is though enough, I don't think I want to be a husband."

"Are you saying that you don't want to be with Astrid?"

"What? No! Yes, I mean... I don't want to get married yet, that's it! Mom, are you thinking that I don't like Astrid?! How can you accuse me of that!?"

"I'm just judging by your words and your reaction. Tell me the truth Hiccup, do you love Astrid or not? This question has nothing to do with the marriage, do you love her wholeheartedly?"

I didn't know what to say to be honest. My mom is really playing tricks with my mind. A part of me secretly agreed with her. Do I not love Astrid? But how can that be? Like, I knew her for so long and I'm quite positive that I'm in love with her. Or does my mind think so and not my heart? Is it true?

"I... Uh, I don't know! Maybe I don't even know what love is!" I blurted out.

Mom looked at me. I don't know what my answer has made her think. I'm in a whole lot of trouble now.

"Calm yourself down and try to clear your thoughts." She sighed. "You're confused. I've been in that situation before. Go, get some rest."

I nodded and walked out of her room. But then I saw Astrid, her eyes were rather red and puffy. It looked like she's been crying.

"Hey Astrid. Is there something?" I asked. "What happened?"

"You mean... You don't love me and don't want to get married?" Astrid asked and more tears ran down her face.

I was taken aback. Was she spying just now? Did she hear the entire conversation?!

"I didn't mean to eavesdrop, I was just passing by and I heard you and your mother talking rather loudly. I didn't mean to spy on you and I wish I didn't hear all that!" Astrid said.

"No, Astrid, you got it all wrong!" I tried to defend myself. I had to think quick.

"Face it Hiccup, you don't love me at all!" She yelled angrily.

"No, I do! I do love you, it's just..." I was lost for words.

"It's just that you only say that but you don't feel that way!" Astrid continued for me.

I was in a state of shock. "Astrid, listen-"

"No, I don't want to listen to you! All this time you were a lie! You didn't love me at all this whole time." She cut in.

"Don't accuse me like that! Just because I said I don't know doesn't mean I don't love you!" I shouted.

"You don't even know about your own feelings, you're too busy with your chief duties that you don't feel anything!" She fired back.

"Astrid, please stop!" I begged.

"I'll stop all right! I don't want to see you ever again!" Astrid slapped my face and ran away, crying even louder.

I rubbed my cheek, wanting to run after her but I knew it would only anger her even more. I cannot believe what just happened. A few tears flowed freely as I went to my room. I crawled miserably into my bed and cried. There was so many different emotions going on and my head is already starting to ache.

I went to my window and whistled for Toothless. "Hey buddy, wanna go for a ride?"  I asked. He excitedly smiled and I climbed out of my window and sat on his back.

~Flashback~

Toothless and I flew as far away as possible. I wanted to run away from all of my problems so badly but I'd knew they would come back and I'll need to face them eventually.

I sighed deeply. "Any ideas on where to go bud?"  I patted Toothless' head.

All of a sudden, Toothless flew at top speed. I quickly held on to him tight. "Woah! Slow down, where are we going?"  I asked.

Toothless flew really fast, so fast that I could barely keep my eyes open with so much wind. Too fast buddy, slow down! I can't see! I couldn't get the words out. Finally, he stopped and landed. I fluttered my eyes open and looked around.

"The gateway?" I looked at him. Toothless just smiled and nudged my elbow, he wanted me to keep walking. Looks like we're in for an exploration.

The gateway was well, how do I say... Amazing, majestic, beautiful, unbelievable, all together. There were no words to describe this thing. When the gateway was first discovered in Berk, many took on the challenge to find out what's behind it. Unfortunately, none of them returned, and that's why no one ever comes here now. Everybody feared the consequences.

There were these radiant and glowing leaves everywhere. I plucked one and stuffed it in my pocket, I decided to do more research on it when I go home. Then the sky is also weird, it's morning right now but at here? It's between sundown and nighttime. Only this portion of the sky is different, which I couldn't not think of any logical reason on why the sky is like that. As I was busy walking around, I didn't notice that Toothless was gone. I looked around in panic. "Toothless?"  I called out. "Toothless!"

Toothless came flying to me at top speed. "Hey, where did you go? You had me worried!" I exclaimed. Toothless immediately placed down a book that was in his mouth.

"What'd you got there?"  I examined as I tried to open it. The book was shut tight. Open up, book! There was no lock or anything, the book was completely stuck. The cover's blank so I couldn't tell what it's about.

"Where did you find it?" I quickly asked Toothless. He quickly ran in the opposite direction and I followed him. Toothless stopped at a large bush. Only, this bush wasn't with the glowing leaves, it was different, it had flowers instead. And these flowers, weren't quite the flowers you see everyday. They sparkled like gemstones.

Toothless poked his head into the bush. "You found it in the bush?" I asked and he nodded. I looked at the book again and I could have sworn it glowed for a split second. But then it was gone. I turned to Toothless, hoping he might have seen it too but he showed no reaction.

"Well, good find, we'll check it out later. Come on, wanna fly?" I asked Toothless. I got on his back and we flew up nearer to the gateway. We circled around it twice, getting a full view. It was just... Wow. We landed on the steps and it glowed. Toothless jumped in shock and went tumbling down.

"You all right bud?" I asked as I examined the steps. I put my hand on the next step and it glowed as well. Never knew it could do that! This is amazing! Then I was acting like a little kid, running up and down the stairs. Or maybe I looked more like a lunatic that just escaped from an asylum.

Toothless got excited too and trotted proudly up the stairs with his tongue sticking out, it was like the spotlight was on him. We had so much fun together. I slipped on the last step and was THIS close to the gateway. My finger was like 5 millimetres away from it. Luckily Toothless pulled me away in time. Toothless than inspected the gateway himself, looking closely and very sternly at it. Without any warning, he blasted at the gateway. To both our amazement, the blast went straight through the gateway!

My jaw was wide open, I couldn't believe my eyes. Did I just see what I just saw? Are my eyes playing tricks with me? Toothless quickly backed away on fear, trying to pull me along but I stopped him.

"Hold on! I just wanna see... "  I said and placed my hand into the gateway. There was this ripple effect and my hand felt tingling. Toothless panicked again and dragged me down at least 3 steps. My stomach hurt an awful lot going down the stairs like that, ouch!

"Toothless!"  I yelled. "Will you stop panicking?! Look at me, I'm perfectly fine, all right?"  Toothless nodded in regret and I turned to the gateway again. I knew that something sparked in me. It was the call for an adventure. It was curiosity. It was the desire to go through the gateway. It was the need to know what's behind it.

I looked back at Toothless. "Buddy, I'm gonna ask you a question that you might think is crazy, should we go into the gateway?'' Toothless hopped up and down in excitement, making a cute noise.

"You really think that?" I questioned. Toothless nodded his head vigorously. Did that mean that he actually wanted to go to the gateway ever since he brought me here?

"Ok, you're not worried about what's waiting behind there? You're not afraid of not coming back? Are you willing to risk it all?" I asked. Again, Toothless nodded. My mind was racing. I never thought he would think as crazily as me. That's my boy! I smiled proudly.

Toothless went down and brought the book that he found back in the bush. I tried to open it again but it was shut tight. Maybe this book will be useful later.

Toothless excitedly nudged me, he was ready to go. I stood by his side. "Are you ready for this?"  I patted his head. We then took a step into the gateway.

It all went black.
