5. A Fair World

When we went with Sang-woo's plan, Gi-hun went over the edge. He was dangling and scared. I was scared as well for all of our lives. We saw the other team fall. "Pull now!" Sang-woo shouted. And we did, luckily for us we managed to get Gi-hun back over the edge. We got into a rhythm and nothing was going to beat us now. We were winning. When the other team went over the side we started to get pulled forwards. We all whimpered given that we couldn't control anything. When the guillotine came down we all fell backwards. We all painted as we hit the ground. I was so tired. When the makes men came round and undid the padlocks. When we got to the elevator I looked at my hands.

"Oh, Lord, protect me." The religious guy said.

"Hey, dude. Who you think you're praying to, huh? To God? You think you made it out of there because of God, don't you? The reason you're still breathing and thanking that nice God of yours...is that old man there. And that guy over there who came up with that awesome last-minute trick. You know if there's anybody that you should be thanking it's them, not God." The girl Sae byeok recruited said to him.

"You sad lost soul. What would you say about everybody who was nailed to the cross for our salvation today? They sacrificed themselves for us. We are here, thanks to their blood. I pray to the Lord on behalf of all us sinners. I gave thanks for their sacrifice. God made a decision to help our team win. That's why we're all here." He said to us, I didn't believe him.

"Bullshit. You killed those guys out there. Oh! If we say some prayers, do we all get to go to heaven? I should really pray too if that's how easy it is. Our God who art in Heaven, we worked as a team to send people to your side. And we sent a bunch of them today. And please help us with a whole lot more to be with you. Ans I hope that from now on- -" New girl started before she was cut off.

"Be quiet!" Sae byeok said to her, the only thing we could hear was the man muttering his prayers.

"Me? Or you mean that guy?" New girl asked her.

"Everyone." She answered when the doors opened we started walking out and across the structure. I was in front of Ali, which meant Sae byeok was a bit behind me. When we got back to the main area, the other team looked at us. The room went silent. Which I hated. I wonder who else would be coming back tonight. We went to our little area and sat down. Before I could sit down though, Sae byeok pulled me onto her lap.

"Are you okay?" I asked her, she hadn't been ok since the end of that game.

"I'm just tired." She said to me before resting her head on my shoulder. Soon it was time for dinner. We got some corn tonight.

"You know what! I really thought we were going to die out there. And then, as soon as we're all leaning back, I felt so powerful. Like, 'whoa! It works. Is this real?' Hey, old man, how do you know that?" Annoying woman asked 1.

"As a kid, I would always- -" He started with a smile before he was cut off.

"Oh, you copied that one thing. From that movie. What's it called? The guy who dodges bullets like this. Right?" She asked while acting out the thing.

"Matrix." Ali answered, she just hummed.

"Hey, when you got to Korea, is all you did watch movies? And our man...'everybody, three steps up when I signal.' Oh. My God, I can't believe how cool that was. How did you come up with it under all that pressure?" She asked both Ali and Sang-woo.

"Earlier, you were the one who said no." Ali said calling her out.

"Yeah? Was that what you heard?" She asked him, that's what we all heard.

"You cried and said, 'but that's the edge. There's no way I'll go.' Like that." He said mimicking her. He was accurate.

"You really did." I said to her.

"Hey, you. You got a visa? I bet you don't. You're an illegal alien. Hey, boys, how about it? Why keep the strange foreigner when we could just ditch him? Our team's more secure that way, huh? Guess I'd better do some major restructuring while in here. Who's captain here, guys? Mr. Brains, you've been captain, right?" She asked us, we didn't have a leader.

"There's no captain. We're all equal here." Sang-woo said to her, if she didn't like it she could leave.

"Ah! That's great. Building an egalitarian society! Damn, guys. I gotta say this is quite a change from that huge asshole who just bosses you around and pretend he's king." She said while looking at them, they we're all watching us.

"Oh, about that, grandma, why did you get kicked out?" Gi-hun asked, the atmosphere changed quickly.

"Grandma? Don't you ever call me that! Here, Han Mi-nyeo. Got it? Mi-nyeo. That's my name. And I didn't get kicked out. I made this decision to go, all right? Those crazy thugs there? You can't lock me in with that crew." She said to us.

"They only got rid of you, then they only wound up with male players. Right before the game at that. You know, it's almost like they knew about it ahead of time." Sang-woo said to us, the PA system then chimed.

"Players, your bedtime will begin in 30 minutes. Please return to your assigned beds and prepare for the lights-out." The woman over the PA said.

"Another fight could break out like last night. We should make a plan." Sang-woo said to us, we needed to be protected.

"What can we do, huh? We've got four girls and old man and us. Our team is the weakest one in here." 196 said to us, but that wasn't true.

"Just because we look weak doesn't mean that we are." I said to him.

"We could chose a weak team and go after them first." The religious guy said, I heard the new girl scoff.

"For a resident priest, you sure are bloodthirsty." She said to him.

"I thought priests weren't supposed to think like that." I said agreeing with her point.

"I mean, everybody's hands are bloody. We're all sinners, but we're still here, aren't we?" He said to us, he confused me.

"Attacking is our best option. So I think that's our plan." The other guy said to us, why couldn't we just stay out of it.

"During the fight last night, the man in the bed in front of us got killed. And the person he thought was on his side broke his neck. Do you trust me then? I don't trust one person here except from Haneul." Sae byeok said to us. They all looked at her.

"She's the only person I trust as well." I said while looking up at Sae byeok. Gi-hun stood up,

"All right. I think let's still do something. Before the lights go out, let's create a barricade. It might be good to make sure that we have cover." He said to us. Ali hummed I'm response. We started moving metal around to create a barrier. I winced in pain as something got caught in my rope burn. I shrugged it off and went to help with the sheets.

"Haneul, you're bleeding." Sae byeok said to me, I looked at my hand an I was. She grabbed a spare blanket. "Give me your hand." She said to me. I gave it to her.

"Whatever you're gonna do please be gentle." I said to her, she then wrapped it. Yes, it looked like a massive ball on my hand but at least it would stop the bleeding.

"Now, sit down and wait for me." She said to me, I nodded. I watched her as she worked. Once she was done she sat beside me.

"They'll shut off the lights soon. They might not all come right away. So we better swap out who's gonna keep watch, just to be safe, I think." Gi-hun said, I didn't mind when I would be on watch. Just as long as I could sleep.

"No, two of us should watch. A pair can keep each other awake. Just one person might go leave and betray our team." Sang-woo said to us, that was true.

"I can...be first watch then. You don't really sleep a lot when you're old." Old man said to us.

"Excuse me, but are we just supposed to trust an old man like you to not sleep on the job all night?" 196 asked him, this man was getting on my nerves.

"Let me go first." Sang-woo said after inhaling.

"I'm not tired yet. I'll go with you." Ali said to him, I liked Ali. He was definitely someone that I could trust apart from Sae byeok of course. Along with Gi-hun. He never judged the two of us and it made me smile when he calls me Sae byeok's lover.

"Then I'll be next. You wake me up the second you get tired." Gi-hun said to Ali.

"Then why don't I join you on second watch? Assuming that's okay with you." Old man said making Gi-hun nod with a smile.

"Yeah, that sounds good." He said to him. Soon the beep went and the lights went out. I got into bed with Sae byeok. I rolled onto my side and she wrapped her arm around me pulling me closer to her. I took her hand and interlocked our fingers. I fell asleep in an instant and I didn't plan on waking up anytime unless I have to. And the only time I did wake up wasn't when Sae byeok went to go on watch. But something else. Which only reveal something unexpected. When the siren went off and the lights came on, I didn't understand what was happening. Sae byeok took my hand.

"Sae byeok, I'm scared." I said to her in a whisper.

"I know you are. I'm scared to but I'll protect you if anything happens." She said to me making me nod. When the masked men came in I got extremely nervous.

"Attention. All players, please make your way to the center of the room. Once again all players, please make your way to the center of the room." The announcer said, once the masked men moved the barricade to our area one of the came in with a gun.

"Hey, move it." He said to us. We then started moving to the center of the room. Except from the old man and Gi-hun. I wonder what was happening.
