16. Unexpected Events

Ted and Amy gasped.

"Uh, I don't get it. What are we shocked about?" a confused Ted asked.

"H-hold on Ted." Amy directed herself to the person on the other side of the device again. "How could that happen? Natalie is locked up now!"

"No. This is a different person. Remember the church I sent you to?"

"Yeah, that was just weird," Amy recalled the vicious statues, the metal gates, and the lies Charlotte and Julia had told to the police.

"Please tell me exactly what happened."

"I snuck in because the entrances were blocked by iron doors and live statues. Miss Charlotte was acting unexpectedly violent. When we heard the police sirens, she grabbed a device and unblocked all the doorways. Everything was gone— the iron doors, the mannequins, all of it. The police came to interrogate and they ended up arresting US! Can you believe that?"

"Wait a second. Who's 'us'?" Susan asked.

"Someone had already been there trying to fend off Miss Charlotte. A victim, per se."

"Oh my.. please go on."

"The cops chose to believe Miss Charlotte and Julia's sob story over ours. I can see why though."

"Thank you for your report, Agent Amy."

"You're welcome. Is there any chance you can bail us out?"

Ted grinned. He was more than ready to taste freedom again.

"I'm sorry, but you'll have to count me out. It will look too suspicious."

"Susan.." Amy coaxed.

"Look. The reason I sent you is because Miss Charlotte kidnapped Morgan. I have to go now. Call me when you've been released."

And with that, the secretary hung up. Amy leaned back against the wall defeated and sighed.

"She said no, didn't she?" Ted asked softly.

"That's right. Sorry Ted, but it looks like we'll be staying here for quite a while."

Ted sighed. "Who was that anyway?"

"My boss."

Ted crossed his arms over his chest. "Bull. I know that's not your boss. Just tell me the truth already."

"The truth about what?" Amy's voice got a little lighter.

"About your job Amy."

"Fine! I'll tell you, but you must promise to never tell anyone."

"Of course," Ted smiled sincerely. He was a pretty trustworthy guy.

"I'm a secret agent."

"Don't kid me." Ted raised his voice.

"Shh! Ted, I'm not joking."

Ted rolled his eyes and grinned. "And I'm a vampire. Seriously come on. You just confessed that you're a secret agent. What kind of agent would reveal themself to a stranger?"

"Technically you're not a stranger anymore."

"But still."

"It's the truth!" Amy glared. If he didn't want to believe her, good. It didn't matter to her.

Ted stared at her blankly, finally letting just a mere seep of consideration enter his brain. And then- it clicked.

"Oh my gosh, you're right. How you came in James Bond style to the church and used a gadget, that explains everything."

Amy chuckled and poked his shoulder. "There. See? You're not as dumb as I thought."

"What makes you think I'm dumb?!" Ted stepped back, taking a bit of offense.

Amy laughed even harder at this. "Because the cute ones are usually dumb!"

Ted scratched the back of his neck in embarrassment. "Now that's just unfair."

"It ain't nothing but the cold hard truth, honey," Amy guffawed.

"Wait. If you work with Naomi, then that must mean..."

"Cat's outta the bag. Yeah, she's a spy too." Amy said cooly as she crossed her arms and leaned against the cool wall of their cell.

"Why did you tell him?" a familiar but monotone voice came from behind the bars next to their cell.

"Tell him what, that he's cute?" Amy chuckled. "I didn't know he was taken."

Ted's eyes went wide.

"No! Why did you tell him that I'm a spy!" Naomi glared at Amy.

"So what? He's your friend, isn't he?"

Naomi's eyes swept to where Ted was standing and she narrowed them, a menacing look electrocuting his body. "Not anymore."

He sighed and decided to get to the dilemma at hand. "I'm sure you heard why Amy and I are here. But.. what are YOU doing here?"

Amy placed her hands on her hips and confronted Naomi. "Yeah. Last I heard, you didn't report to the church."

"Well..." Naomi's memory flashed back to a few hours ago when she'd gone to the bar to get a drink.

"Give me three shots, please." Naomi sighed as she dropped her elbows on the counter and rubbed her face.

"Naomi..." her trusted bartender Jasmine whispered loudly over the music while making cautionary glances.

Naomi followed her eyes and noticed a tall bald officer staring right back at her.

"Drinking underage, are we?"

"And that's what happened..." she hugged herself, feeling a little ashamed after confessing that.

"Naomi Naomi Naomi. You should really give up those bad habits," Amy advised.

"I'm trying," Naomi muttered and looked down.

"Britney! There you are!" Lena sang happily as soon as she entered the Harlequin kitchen.

Britney tossed some vegetables onto a frying pan and turned up the heat. She didn't respond, so Lena assumed she was too focused to have heard her.

"I've been looking for you everywhere." She continued as she took out another pan to help.

Britney turned around and stared at her, no expression on her face.

"Britney? What's-"

"Watch my vegetables will you?" And with that, she walked away.

"Britney.." Lena's voice fell. She must still be mad, she thought as she gulped down the knot in her throat.

After preparing the meal and serving it, Lena went off to the break room where Mary and Maya were giggling gleefully.

Maya glanced behind Mary's shoulder and saw Lena walk in slouching.

"What's wrong Lena? You don't look like yourself," Maya thought aloud, causing Mary to turn around.

"Britney's still mad at me," Lena mumbled sadly.

"You mean because of what you said at the park?"

Lena nodded, tugging at her black sleeves while looking sheepishly at the ground.

"Of course she's mad," Mary interjected.

"Mary!" Maya gasped as Lena abruptly looked up in surprise.

"I mean," Mary crossed her arms, "How would you feel if someone crashed your date by saying something lewd?"

"Angry I guess," Lena sighed.

"Her behavior is justified. But soon her anger will fade away. You need to be careful next time."

"I will, I promise."

Mary gave a satisfied nod. "Oh girls, I was meaning to ask... Who wants to join me for an ultra-secret celebrity party tonight at the forest?"

Maya and Lena's faces lit up at the mention of a party.

"Mary! How on earth did you find out about something like that?" Maya grabbed Mary's shoulder in excitement.

Mary chuckled and flipped her hair. "Let's just say I'm good at knowing these types of things."

"I'd love to join! I can even drive you guys there!" Lena added.

"That would be great!" Maya cheered as she and Lena started doing a goofy little dance.

Mary laughed. "Just make sure you all wear some stylish party dresses! This is a celebrity party we're talking about, we're going to need to go all out."

"Hey, Dawn! I haven't seen you for a long time!" Lena was surprised to see Dawn at the Harlequin Restaurant again. "What can I get for ya?"

"Haha yeah," she laughed nervously, holding the rather large menu in front of her. "Could I get the Beef Wellington with a side of honey glazed carrots and parsnips?"

"Sure thing! By the way..." Lena leaned down, lowering her voice and holding her notepad close to her chest. "How would you like to come to a party with Mary, Maya, and me?"

"Oh, I'm not sure..."

"Oh come on! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity-"

"Ok fine!" All she wanted was to eat her lunch in peace, perhaps saying yes would make her go prepare her meal.

"Alright!" Lena cheered. "Just meet us at the Harlequin Restaurant at 7 o'clock and we'll leave from there."

"Got it."

"Guys this is going to be so much fun!" Lena couldn't hold back her enthusiasm as she drove. She wore a bright orange bandage dress with a white leather jacket over it, the colors expressing her fun-loving personality.

"The view from here is breathtaking," Dawn observed the sparkling city lights rolling by through the passenger window. She wore a short formal black dress with short lace sleeves, her onyx necklace contrasting against her pale skin.

"It really is," Lena grinned.

The city lights faded away as they reached the outskirts of town. The streets became narrower and narrower, lights became dimmer and dimmer... The streets were empty except for a solitary man wandering.

"WATCH OUT!"

KATHUNK.

The car jerked to a halt.

Maya groaned and rubbed her neck.

"I think we hit something!" Mary realized.

Maya gripped her seat belt. "You guys check. I'm staying in the car."

Dawn and Lena stepped out into the darkness, bracing themselves for the gruesome sight.

The only lampost working flickered in the distance, everything else around their vehicle was cast in shadows. Lena's headlights had apparently shattered upon impact.

Dawn knelt down in front of the car.

"Can you see anything? How is he?" Lena trembled.

Dawn furrowed her eyebrows and stood up. "Nothing is there."

"What? But we SAW HIM."

Dawn shook her head and crossed her arms. "Maybe we just imagined it. There's no blood on the car or any sign we hit someone." Something felt awfully wrong.

"But the headlights-"

"Oh my gosh look to your right!" Mary yelled from within the car.

Lena and Dawn turned around to see a faceless figure in a tuxedo and top hat skip into an alley.

"We should leave," Lena whispered quickly.

The two got into the car and resumed their journey. The headlights began to work again after they left the residential area, but no one got off to investigate it. As the crew got closer to the forest, a display of brilliant lights could be seen from the distance. Music echoed through the trees, enticing anyone who passed to join the celebration.

"We're almost there," Mary grinned. She wore a velvety dark green long sleeved one-shoulder dress and a silver pendant. The girls followed behind her, most of them starting to regret wearing heels as they stepped over the cold damp grass.

"I don't know what I was thinking when I decided to wear open-toed heels," Maya whined as she pushed some curls away from her face. She adjusted her shiny purple cuff and smoothed out her matching purple bodycon dress.

"We're here!" Mary cheered.

"Look at all the famous people here!" Maya looked around in awe.

In the crowd, they spotted Jasmin, one of the most expensive party planners in the city. Every celebrity hired her for their biggest, grandest festivities. Talking to her was Belle, one of the town's lead researchers. She graduated university at a young age and became a scientist. Lena was excited to see her role model, a master of the culinary arts known as Rosalie Faren. She was famous for catering baked pastries to some of the richest people.

"Don't wait for me, I'm gonna go and meet some celebrities!" Mary laughed and disappeared into the crowd.

"O- ok bye!" Maya called out. She turned around to face the other girls. "We should call over a celebrity!"

***

Teen sensation Sasha McCormicks laughed loudly before excusing herself from a small group of acquaintances.

Goosebumps grew on her skin as she walked alone through the dim forest. She couldn't shake off the strange feeling that she was being watched.  She knew she had to get away. Right now. Anything was better than being sighted in that crowd.

"Stop right there."

Sasha stopped dead in her tracks and turned around to face the voice that had sliced through the cold air.

"It's nice to see you again, sister," Mary grimaced.

"Sister? Whatever are you talking about?" Sasha stepped back and glanced around her.

Mary rolled her eyes. "Oh cut the crap. No one's here anyway."

"What do you want Mary?"

"Oh nothing. I'm just SICK of seeing you prance around my city."

Sasha flipped her long bleached hair back and smirked. "What can I say, people love me being here."

"I don't care. Just get out!"

"No. You're not the boss of me."

Mary got even more frantic, stomping her foot forward and pointing away from the city. "I said get out!"

"And I said NO!"

Mary lunged forward and smacked her hand straight across Sasha's cakey cheek.

"Did you just f'in slap me?"

"Yeah, so what?" Mary challenged.

Sasha lifted her knee and kicked Mary to the grassy floor, mud splashing onto her velvety green dress.

"Bitch, I'll make you pay," she muttered.

Sasha cackled and got up in her face. "No you won't! You're all talk aren't you? What kinds of lies have you been telling your friends, huh?"

Mary gritted her teeth. She yanked her sister by her dangling extensions, dragging the rest of her into the mud.

"Aghh!"

Sasha fell into the mud and pulled Mary down before she could get up. Sasha held her arms up to block her face from a punch and rolled over, trying desperately to pin Mary down before she started another attack. Mary found an open spot on her torso and finally kicked her off of her. Sasha's head slammed into a tree and she groaned, wiping away the goeey blood that dripped underneath her bangs.

She leaned her back against the tree for support and slowly started pulling herself up when she suddenly felt hands grip around her neck.

"Ahhh! Let me go!" Sasha gasped as she attempted to unhinge Mary's fingers from her throat.

"No."

Mary's eyes looked lifeless and cold, her features devoid of any humanity.

"Please I be-GG" Sasha coughed, her vision becoming blurry and tears streaming down her face. Her chest tightened as her lungs fought for air. She gripped at Mary's arms, but they were too strong. In a desperate struggle for survival, she swung her hands at her sister's face and dug her nails into her cheek, peeling back skin.

SNAP.

Sasha's head tilted back and her body went limp, eyes staring lifeless at the branches above.

Mary dropped her carcass and wiped the mud off her dress. She took in a deep breath and smiled. "Babe I'm done."

"Good job, Mary." a brutish figure in lumberjack apparel stepped out of the shadows and grinned. "You're a natural," he whispered, wiping the blood away from the scratch on her cheek before kissing her.

"Thanks," Mary chuckled softly. "I need to go wash off this blood."

"Who's blood is it?"

"Both. She managed to throw some good punches, too," Mary sighed. "You should go hide, Henry."

He nodded, pushing some messy blonde hair off his forehead. He silently passed her a knowing smile as he disappeared back into the depth of the shadows.

Mary rolled the body down a small hill where it became hidden in fallen leaves. She continued along the forest until she came upon an abandoned building. Some kind of vapor or heavy fog rolled out through the cracks in the shattered windows, making the building look a bit eery.

Pretty sure there's a bathroom up there, Mary deduced.

The sounds of muffled chatter became audible as she walked closer to the entrance. The door was missing, which only made it easier to get in. She realized she wasn't the only one who had stumbled upon the abandoned wonder.

Mary waved some funky smelling fog away from her face, wondering if some skunks had gotten in. It was then that she saw a couple of celebrities passing around a joint. Not too far was another group of celebrities laughing and dancing to whatever music they were imagining at the moment.

Yep, they're definitely high, Mary thought as she carefully made her way upstairs.

She stopped at the top of the steps, debating whether to open the first or second door across the hallway. She decided she might as well open the first one and go on from there.

Mary turned the handle, the door opening without any resistance.

"Mmff..."

"Is this the rest-" Mary wondered aloud and instantly covered her mouth.

"Mary?!" Maya blushed and hid behind a shirtless Edward.

Mary turned around quick in embarrassment. "Oh my gosh I am so sorry! I was just looking for the bathroom I swear!"

"Well this is awkward..." Edward confirmed.

"Mary are you ok?" Maya asked timidly, fear seeping into her voice. "I mean gosh— look at you! You have blood all over your dress!"

"Me? Yeah, I just spilled some wine on me is all. No big deal."

"Thank goodness," Maya sighed with relief.

"Ahem can Mary's back leave? We were busy doing something before you interrupted," Edward grunted.

"Edward!" Maya glared.

"No no he's right! I'll be leaving now," Mary slipped out quietly.

"By the way, the bathroom's on the far left!" Maya called out to her before Mary shut the door.

"Ok thanks!" she called back through the closed door and quickly made her way to the farthest door in the hall.

She opened the door and was relieved to find the bathroom empty. Unfortunately, the light switches were useless.

I guess I'll just have to work without the lights on, Mary thought as she ran some napkins under the light stream of sink water.

She snorted and let out a cackle as she remembered Maya's worried voice. I can't believe they fell for that stupid wine lie! It amazed her how easily she got away with it. A surge of adrenaline cursed through her body and she smiled. How much more would she be able to get away with?
