XXX
The aroma of grass immediately invaded Foreman's sense of smell. He couldn't see a thing, even though he was positive that his eyes were wide open. But he soon pieced things together as the rest of him regained its senses - he was lying face down in a patch of grass.
He. That was the first thing he needed to point out. The last time he had been awake, the last thing he could possibly remember, he had been, well, not a he. What had happened that whole time?
Foreman found his head pounding, aching as if he had been hit over the head with a rock. Certainly that wasn't what had happened, was it? No, no, no. He knew that couldn't be the case.
Finally, the answers came to him - he was in the computer database. He remembered. He had chosen to be taken here and uploaded. His long life had been ready to come to a close...or, at least, come to a save. Foreman didn't have anything left in the regular universe, so he knew he had to come to the Library and the virtual world.
There was only one thing waiting here for him, that much was sure - but Foreman knew it was the one thing he wanted most, and it couldn't be found within reality. Brook was here in the computer. She'd been saved years ago, from what he knew. He hadn't seen here in many years, but he felt positive that she remained there.
Perhaps her appearance had changed as well - he wouldn't know, he hadn't expected to look quite so different from his physical form and yet there he was. It was if he'd been reversed in regenerations, and he didn't know why or how it happened. All he knew was that it pleased him, and that the very same thing may have happened to Brook when she was saved.
But before he could manage to find out if such a thing had happened to Brook, he would have to seek her out first. Although it was clear that the only place he could really go was into the enormous white house behind him, he still knew he was going to have quite a time attempting to find her in the end. It might take hours trying to walk through that mansion.
Nevertheless, he'd waited years to even get this close to her. Hours meant nothing compared to everything else he'd been through. He hadn't been so close to her for years on end, and now he was finally managing to find a way closer to her. If he just continued moving forwards, then he would find her. It would not go to waste.
Foreman wandered into the mansion, glancing around. He felt awfully out of place, as if he truly wasn't meant to be around the area. He was an outsider, never truly meant to be there after everything. If he just managed to find Brook, perhaps he would feel like he belonged. But that still seemed to be a goal which remained out of his reach.
He began searching around the house, which, in spite of its size, seemed to be nearly deserted. The only reason he felt confident that even a single soul lived there was because of the distinct lack of dust. Then again, that might just be the computer playing a trick on his gullible mind.
Finally, he stumbled across a room where a woman stood looking out a window. This was the first person he'd stumbled across and he'd already managed to see something he'd expected would remain entirely out of his reach for ages on end.
A mound of curly hair. A very familiar mound of curly hair, for that matter. He knew those curls, knew how they used to frame his love's face every moment of every day until she regenerated. Was this really her, standing in front of him? If it was, he wasn't sure he was prepared for this moment. If it wasn't, he didn't want to deal with the devestation. No, he couldn't.
"Brook?" he asked softly, reaching out a hand towards her shoulder. She whipped around, and it only took him a moment to realise that the woman standing in front of him was not Brook - but she was still a Song.
Standing in front of him was River Song, her mother. Foreman again felt conflicted over this, wondering how he should feel about this new development. Perhaps he'd made an error in his thought process, made a mistake in his plan. Perhaps he'd managed to find only River, and Brook was somewhere else in a place he couldn't reach.
It was almost laughable how much his hope vanished as soon as things didn't go according to plan. He'd been expecting everything to turn out so wonderfully that he hadn't considered any bumps in the plan. But, then again, perhaps meeting River Song wasn't a setback at all. Perhaps it was something Foreman could use to propel himself forward.
"River, sorry - I thought you were Brook, what with the hair and all..."
"Foreman," River replied, heaving out a laugh. She didn't seem to mind at all that she'd been confused with her daughter. "I never thought I would see you again. I can't say I'm disappointed."
"Yeah, I never thought I'd make it here myself," Foreman agreed. "Now, I was wondering..well, maybe we should speak about other matters. I don't have a clue what's going on, but...I'm trying..."
"I'm guessing you're wondering where Brook is," River said, knowing that she'd be better off finishing Foreman's sentence for him. "Honestly, if you've made it this far into the house, I'm surprised you haven't found her yet. She's always running about with the children."
"The children?" Foreman said, gulping.
"Yes, the children," River said again. "They're not her biological children, by any means."
Foreman put a hand to his forehead as he began to recall the last time he had seen Brook - she had been a projection maintained by the TARDIS. She told him about the children then, but he had forgotten. Now he just simply felt foolish.
"Oh, yes, sorry," he said. "I just...it's striking to think she's been raising children once again."
"I wonder what the Doctor would think of me raising children once again," River said, raising her eyebrows. "Anyways, I thought you wanted to see Brook. I'm sure we'll be able to find her within about ten minutes, especially if we put our minds to it."
Foreman could do nothing but close his eyes for a moment. If River was correct, the moment he had been desperate to have for years upon years of his life was coming to him soon.
"I suppose I need to go find her, then," Foreman said, nodding several times. "I mean, I don't want to keep her waiting."
"She's not expecting you at all - she stopped expecting you ages ago," River replied.
"Of course she did..." Foreman mumbled. "I wouldn't have expected me to come either. But..."
"Go out and find her. I believe she's outside somewhere, playing with the children. If she gave up her hopes of ever seeing you again, then she'll most certainly end up thrilled by seeing you once again. Don't keep yourself from her any longer. I'm sure I'll join you soon."
"Thank you, River," Foreman said, nodding his head in her direction. He wasn't sure if he was acting in quite the way he should be, but he refused to think through it all too deeply. Instead, he started walking forwards and moving towards the front door he'd entered the house in to begin with.
Well, at least he knew with certainty that Brook was somewhere around there. He'd just met her mother and conversed with her, and yet he hadn't even thought through how much of a miracle it was to begin with. These thoughts started to course through him as he allowed himself to open up the front door and move outside once again.
The outside area was quite lovely, he had to admit. When he'd first arrived, he thought of it as something heavenly...it certainly did seem to be rather heavenly even now that he knew it was all created by a computer. This made his walk around the perimeter of the mansion something far less tedious and far more fascinating.
Nevertheless, his anxiety over the situation ended up causing him quite a bit of distress. He needed to find Brook. He didn't have the faintest idea how she would react - she'd stopped thinking that he'd come years ago, according to her mother. She might even be angry that he hadn't come sooner...perhaps this hadn't been the greatest idea after all.
And then Foreman spotted her, surrounded by three children. Two, who appeared to be a twin boy and girl, ended up running around her and causing her to erupt into bursts of laughter. The third seemed calm, sitting over by the side and holding a book of her own to read over.
He was so paralysed over seeing her once again that he didn't make any sort of movement in her direction for several moment. He had to break himself out of this state, knowing that if he didn't start going towards Brook he might never manage to unfreeze himself. She was finally within his reach, and yet he just stood there.
And so, he began walking forward.
"Who's that man?" a small voice said.
"What man, Ian?" Brook replied. Her voice seemed to be sweetened with honey - it was as if Foreman were dreaming this all. Every detail was the same and yet different all at once. It was too much for him, and this was all before he had even seen her face.
As she followed after Ian and Christine, Brook turned the corner and began to look up. The moment she spotted Foreman, her hands went up to cover her mouth in an enormous gasp.
"Brook," he said, his lips unable to form anything else but her name.
She shook her head. Through her covered mouth, she said, "It's impossible."
Foreman took a single step in her direction. She still seemed to be in shock, too stunned to move. No, this was the shock of a lifetime, of all the time she'd been alive and dead alike. She'd stopped expecting him ages ago, and therefore she couldn't believe it. But he knew it was real. He knew
"This is impossible. It's a trick of the computer, I know it is...this can't be real. You cannot be real," Brook said, letting her hand begin to wander towards Foreman's face.
"I didn't think anything in a computer could be considered real, really," Foreman replied, his voice cracking as if it was made from fragile porcelain. He knew how weak he might seem, but it wasn't nearly as weak as he felt. Brook was right there in front of him.
Despite his incredible awe out of seeing his wife again, it was clear that she was entirely more astounding by the fact that the two were standing just inches before once another. It seemed impossible in so many ways, and she wasn't sure how to take it - her husband, who she'd given up on seeing ever again, was right in front of her!
"I can't believe it," Brook replied, whipping her hand back before it could touch his cheek. She then crossed her arms, pulling herself away from the situation as much as she could manage. "I refuse to believe it. It can't be real. You can't really be here."
"I am," Foreman protested. "I came here when I knew I had nothing left in the rest of the universe waiting for me."
"But you regenerated. You didn't look like this the last time I saw you, and I know you were real that last time," Brook said, now bringing her hands up as if she were going to push him away.
"You look older," Foreman blurted out. He then quickly had to justify his statement, explain what he meant by it. "I mean, when I left you...you...you looked to be about nineteen years old. And then I saw you again, and you looked older...and now...you look about as old as when I knew you."
"And what do you mean by that?"
"You didn't look like this the last time I saw you," Foreman replied. "I mean...I just wanted to tell you that perhaps it was not as strange as you might have thought. And it certainly is possible."
Brook took a moment, glancing back at her three children who all seemed to be rather intrigued by what was happening when it came to their mother and this man. She almost seemed to be asking them a question with her eyes, asking them if she should believe him after all of this. Despite all of her words, she wanted to believe Foreman. She wanted to have him be real.
And so she decided to believe him. He'd made a good point, after all.
"It truly is you, then," Brook said, attempting to keep her voice from crackling and her tears from dripping down. She wanted to remain a picture of perfection for her Foreman.
But he moved forwards, hoping that she wouldn't bat his hands away if he were to wipe her tears away. She couldn't help but cry, knowing that she was finally before her husband for the first time in so many years. And he found himself starting to cry at the same time, partially out of happiness and partially out of the fact that she was crying and he couldn't help but do the same as her.
"I can't believe any of this, but I must," Brook sighed. "This world was already a dream, and now it seems even more so."
"You look beautiful," Foreman murmured. "Just as beautiful as I remembered."
"I should've known you would say something like that. I should've known. It's been so long."
"What do you mean by that?" he asked. "I just wanted to let know that you looked beautiful."
"It doesn't matter," Brook replied. "I missed you. You're beautiful. You're beautful just for being here. I missed you for so long. I love you."
Brook desperately reached forwards, grasping Foreman's face between her hands just to bring him closer to her. Now that he was in her arms, she wasn't going to let him go for quite a long time. She brought his face just close enough that she could still see him clearly, but there were only a few inches between them.
The more she could stare at him, the more it might seem true to her. She didn't wish to feel so numb when it came to seeing him before her, and if she continued to keep her eyes directly on him. She allowed her gaze to flit over each part of his face, letting it enter her memory once again and release the details which had been as far away as those in a story book for the past years.
"Can I kiss you?" she murmured. "I don't even know if I can any more. Can I?"
"Of course you can. Please do. I've wanted to kiss you this entire time. Al the years you've been gone."
Brook knew she could easily carry on this back and forth conversation for ages, but now that she had Foreman in front of her she simply had to kiss him. It was if they'd been waiting for the moment to appear for ages, and now that it was finally there before them neither one knew quite what they were meant to do.
Brook laced her fingers deeper into Foreman's hair, and then quickly pulled herself into an embrace with him, their lips finally meeting. Even though the two were in a computer, they felt as if it were as real as ever. They refused to question it at all, knowing that this was the best thing which had happened them in years upon years.
They easily could've kissed for ages on end, especially when it came to the way time twisted itself through the computer. Of course, neither one wanted to do such a thing as it would end up causing some dilemmas in their virtual lives within the computer. And, of course, they were far from the only people in the computer world.
"Ew!" two of the children squealed from behind the couple. The sound caused Brook to let out a giggle as she pulled herself away from Foreman, remembering that the two were far from alone when it came to standing outside the mansion.
"I didn't think it was all too disgusting," Foreman murmured, deciding to join in on the joke. "If I could say anything, I would think it's brilliant...but it's not my opinion that matters in this moment, yes?"
"Oh, my goodness, Foreman!. You've got to meet my children," Brook said, taking his hands and moving backwards slightly to begin leading him in their direction. "You haven't met them yet, of course."
"No, I haven't," Foreman said, a smile beginning to curl across his lips. "But I think I have something of my own to say before we go ahead and start these introductions."
"Don't you want to meet the children I've spent ages with?" Brook asked, lifting her eyebrows. "I thought that might be up your alley."
"Well yes, but... I must say something first. Meet your child," Foreman murmured in response, gently pressing a kiss to her lips before she could respond.
"Meet my child?" she echoed. "What child do I have to meet? I've already met all of them. More than that, even..."
And then Brook decided to peer behind Foreman. She spotted a woman, just barely out of her youthful years, who looked very little like her or her husband. Yet there remained something entirely familiar about her, and Brook could feel the tug of motherhood pushing her forwards.
Then Brook used her ability to access CAL's database to see who, exactly, this girl was. She was Susan Foreman, Susan Arkytior Foreman. Her Susan Arkytior Foreman who she hadn't set eyes on since the girl was four years old. The woman in front of her was several centuries old, and she had missed all of it. But she'd never expected to see her ever again.
"Susan, my Susan," she said, beginning to rush towards her daughter. "My girl. My little girl. Not so little any more, but..."
Brook rushed all the way over to Susan, all while the rest of her family continued to follow behind in order to have a clearer perspective of this phenomenon of a reunion. But as Brook continued to move forwards, she soon realised that she couldn't embrace Susan the way she wished to. She stopped herself short before launching herself into a hug with the woman, knowing her words would have to keep her pleased for the moment.
"You must be my mother, then," Susan said, tears leaping to her eyes. "My mother. I thought I would never know you, after everything."
"I thought I would never know you after I let you go," Brook said, finally allowing herself to sob freely. "I never thought I would have my Susan back."
"I'm sorry that I don't remember you. I'm sorry."
"Don't apologise, Susan. You came to me, and that means more than I could ever say. You did all of this even after everything I've to you. You must know about everything that happened."
"Yes, my father told me," Susan said, nodding several times. "He told me everything, good and bad alike."
"Such a shame that you can't remember any of it...but it was so long ago, and I suppose now that it was so little of your life. The fact that you know it happened and believe it means just as much as it would if you truly remembered it."
"I just can't believe I have my mother before me," Susan exclaimed, meeting Brook in a large embrace. The two clutched on to one another as if letting go would cause them to vanish from the world. Finally, the two had gotten the opportunity to cling to each other as if they may never let go.
"My Susan. My Susan, I can't believe you're here with me but I might never let you go, I swear..."
"I wish I could remember everything which we'd been through," Susan whimpered.
"I said the same thing about wanting to forget," Brook said. "It is a story for another day, but for now...let's begin something new. Something just as beautiful and just as wonderful, but lasting longer."
"I just...I can't..." Susan attempted to blubber out more words, but just ended up burying her face within her hands as tears began to leak out of her eyes. How was it possible that she'd ended up with an entire family when she'd been fairly lonely for most of her life? Brook smiled over to her, but then turned to face her husband.
"Foreman, I can't believe you," Brook said, shaking her head. "You came here, you brought Susan here, you...you impossible man. I love you so much that I could hate you, I swear!"
"Please don't hate me, Brook. Please don't..."
"I could never hate you, Foreman. Not after this. I just never even dreamed..."
"I'm sorry I didn't come sooner," Foreman began to apologise.
"Don't be sorry, you're here," Brook said. "You and Susan are both here. I couldn't hate you for that. You would never believe the hell I've been through when you weren't here. But now all of that is over."
"It's over forever, right?" Foreman said. "It's over."
"All of that's over because...because we're a family together now," Susan said, her voice breaking through her tears and allowing her to breathe properly again.
"We're a family again," Brook realised. "Oh, my God. I never thought we would have a family again. I didn't think it was possible, I thought that I would have such a family here in the computer again. I have a big family now. A huge family."
"What do you mean?" Susan said, her confusion overtaking her sensitivity to how emotional her mother was becoming at the current situation.
"You have some siblings, Susan. And you have some new children, Foreman. You have a whole family to meet now that you're all here in front of me," Brook said. She then turned around and called out to Ian, Christine, and Charlotte, gesturing for them to come over and meet the rest of their family.
"They're tiny," Susan murmured, crouching down to better interact with the children in front of her. "Are you sure they're my siblings?"
"Biologically, no," Brook replied. "But in every other way, yes. Ian, Christine, Charlotte. Meet your sister, Susan. And Susan, meet your siblings."
"Hello there," Susan said. "You must be Ian. And you must be..."
"I'm Christine," the youngest girl replied. "Charlotte is the one with the book. It's good to meet you, Susan."
"It's absolutely wonderful to meet you too," Susan replied. It was impossible to deny that there were tears within her eyes reforming as she continued to converse with her little brother and sisters. Their parents watched on proudly from the side. Brook was especially pleased - she had never considered that something so wonderful might happen in this computer world. It was almost too good to be true, but not quite.
"I have four children now," Foreman said. "I didn't think that would happen."
"As long as you think of them as your children, then there is no matter," Brook replied, pressing a kiss to his cheek. "I was afraid they'd just end up as something you couldn't relate to, but..."
"No, I will gladly take them all in as my own."
"I should've known you wouldn't care if they were your biological children or not."
"It's going to take some time to get used to them, but..."
"It's going to take some time to get used to having you and Susan here," Brook said, shaking her head. "And I'm not the only one who has to get used to it. I mean, we have Ian, Christine, Charlotte. All the people who came here with me on the expedition, and...oh my goodness! How could I forget?"
"What? What do you mean, how could you forget?" Foreman said, his face losing a shade of color as he stood. Anything that had to do with Brook forgetting ended up being a particularly difficult subject for him. Even though she didn't seem to be too upset over what she was saying, he couldn't help but worry.
"Mum!" Brook called out. "We have a family reunion taking place right here, and you're missing out on all of it!"
Foreman felt as he could breathe again - no, Brook hadn't forgotten some vital part of her past or anything of the sort. She just needed to invite her mother to join in with all of the joy they were going through. Of course.
Still, Foreman couldn't let himself settle entirely. He had already spoken to her mother, but there was far more that had occurred than just finding Brook once again for the first time in years. He didn't know how River Song would end up reacting to everything else he had done...
"What are you talking about?" River called back, the sound of her footsteps making it clear that she was interested despite the way the tone of her voice ended up pointing. "I was in the middle of something. Do you need help with Ian, Christine, and Charlotte? Is that what it is?"
"That has nothing to do with a family reunion, Mum!" Brook exclaimed.
"Then does it have to do with Foreman, because I-" River started to say, but she stopped herself from saying more as she finally set eyes upon the large group which had gathered outside the house.
"Mum, I think it's about time that you got to know your granddaughter. This is Susan, my Susan...I've told you a lot about her, but I think she has a lot more to say about herself."
"Your daughter is here?" River exclaimed, stepping forward to see Susan more clearly. "This is your daughter, Brook?"
"You must be my grandmother," Susan said. "Never thought I'd get to meet my grandmother. Never thought I'd get to meet any of you, really."
River didn't say another word, only stepped forward to embrace Susan. Susan fell right into the hug, the tears she'd managed to banish already returning to her eyes. How had she lived without her family for so long, not knowing any of her past?
"We're a family again," Brook murmured. "Not just a select few of us. No, all of us are a family now."
"The Gallifreyan bloodline, saved here in CAL," Foreman said. "Nothing could be as beautiful."
