Chapter 13: An Upper Hand

~~I'm almost done with this book... Good thing I'm working on another!~~

Beep... Beep... Beep

"Hmm?" Wilbur muttered as he turned in his bed.

Beep... Beep... Beep

"Really? Now?" he asked tiredly.

He turned to the side of his bed where his watch was and picked it up. He looked at his notification and saw that he had gotten a report about more missing Supers. He immediately touched it and scanned through the report.

"No, no, no!" he muttered in a panic and quickly jumped off his bed.

He threw the watch on his bed and paced back and forth across the room. He groaned and continued to steal glances at the watch. The black and gold "i" haunted him.

"What do I do?" he asked himself and paced back and forth.

"I have to tell her. But now?" he slightly pulled his hair in frustration.

He sighed before grabbing his watch from his bed. He hesitantly opened the door and got out.

*Knock. Knock. KnockKnock. Knock*

"Violet? Are you awake?" Wilbur asked.

He heard small footsteps coming to the door before it was opened by a clearly tired Violet.

"Wilbur? What time is it?" she asked and yawned.

"I know this isn't the best time, but- Could I come in?" he asked.

"Oh, uh, sure. Just please be quiet. Penny is asleep I think," she replied quietly and moved aside so he could go in.

"Please sit down," he told her.
She did so reluctantly.

"Wilbur, what's wrong?" she asked him.

He sighed and kneeled down in front of her, "Violet, your family was kidnapped by Syndrome."

Violet could feel the air leaving her as she stared wide-eyed at her hands. He handed her the watch so she could read the article. She took it into her shaky hands and desperately tried to make it show more. Wilbur could see her panic so he grabbed her hand and reminded her that she just had to touch it for it to pop out.

She breathed in and quickly scrolled through it. Near the end, there was a video of what had happened that Wilbur hadn't seen. She clicked on it and it became a hologram.

"Incredibles! I've come to challenge you!" Syndrome declared.

"Syndrome! What are you doing here?" Mr. Incredible asked angrily.

"I want to show the world just how dangerous you are!" Syndrome told them.

"These so called "Supers" don't want your safety! They want power!" he told all the innocent bystanders.

"You have a lot of nerve making such false accusations!" Mr. Incredible hissed.

Mrs. Incredible put a hand on his shoulder to stop him from doing anything reckless.

"You see, a few days ago a dear friend of mine was attacked by two well-known Supers. The Time Traveler and Invisigirl!" Syndrome yelled.

The crowd gasped in surprise and started to talk amongst themselves.

"You're wrong!" Speedster yelled.

"I have proof!" Syndrome responded and showed a holographic video.

In that video, Violet and Wilbur were in their Superhero costumes. A blond haired man was walking down the street when they suddenly attacked him with their powers while laughing. Then, Syndrome swooped in and took them out.

"Sad to see your heroes for who they really are, I know. I now have them in my custody, if you would come with me willingly, no harm will come to them," Syndrome asked.

"You're lying!" Mr. Incredible retorted.

"Then where is she now?" Syndrome asked them.

They looked around but found no sign of her. Mr. and Mrs. Incredible felt they had no choice and surrendered.

"Mom! Dad! Don't!" Violet pleaded.

"The kids too," Syndrome reminded them.

"No! D-Speedster run!" Mrs. Incredible yelled.

As soon as Dash grabbed Jack Jack and ran, Syndrome froze their parents with his zero-gravity energy. And the video ended.

Violet scrolled down to see that there was some more information which stated that her brothers were captured only a few hours after their parents. Violet forcefully wiped her tears off and sniffed.

"I won't let this affect what will happen tomorrow, except that I'll do everything beyond my power to bring Syndrome down," Violet told Wilbur shakily.

"I'm sorry, but I knew I had to tell you something this huge," Wilbur apologized.

"Don't worry, but you should probably leave before Penny-" Violet looked to Penny's side of the bed and noticed she was gone.

"She's gone?" Wilbur asked and got up. He looked in the corner and noticed Bolt was still sleeping there.

"Maybe she was just hungry and got up for a snack?" Violet tried to reason, but got up as well and sped out of the room.

"Hopefully," Wilbur replied as he followed suit. After a few minutes of searching around the underground floor, they reunited near the elevator to check the lab.

"You checked everywhere, right?" Violet asked him.

"Yeah, the Simulation Room, the Training Room, even my bedroom," Wilbur replied.

"Wait, what about Hiro's room?" they asked each other in unison.

They quickly went to Hiro's temporary room and opened the door. They expected to see Hiro sound asleep and Penny looking for something like clothes maybe. They, however, did not expect to see Penny and Hiro sound asleep. Penny had her head on Hiro's shoulder while Hiro had his head on her's.

"Does our hero work mean anything?" Violet asked Wilbur quietly.

"Of course it does," Wilbur replied.

"We have to face reality. The world keeps spinning, doesn't it? Why do we always have to fight the evil that never dies?" she started to question. "If we hadn't, then my parents would still be free."

"Violet, what we do is important to all the lives we save, and their families. You're just tired, please, go to sleep," he pleaded.

"You're right, I'm not thinking straight. I'm sorry, goodnight," she gave him a tired smile.

"Being a hero is worth every hardship," Wilbur thought.

"No matter how painful," Violet thought.

"Did I say that out loud?" Wilbur mused.

"Hiro feels warm," they heard Penny say.

They both turned to the two but saw that they were fast asleep.

"Is this another one of her powers?" they thought in unison and then looked at eachother.

"I don't know how, but we'll beat them," Violet assured Wilbur aloud.

"This will give us the upper hand," she thought.

"That's the Violet I know and love," Wilbur smiled and hugged her.

Violet cleared her throat before letting go.

"Umm, I'll go to my room... and sleep, hehe," she told him while slowly backing away. "Good night."

After she left, Wilbur looked back at Penny and Hiro. He gave them a proud smile before closing the door and walking back to his room. He knew Violet was right, there would always be evil people around, but there would also be heroes.

"I'm not giving up," he declared as he made it to his room and laid down on his bed.

"Wait a minute!" he exclaimed and jolted out of his bed.

"The footage Syndrome used was from our training only a few hours ago. Instead of wearing her new costume, Violet chose to wear her Incredibles costume," he thought to himself. "If our cameras are hacked, the only way for Syndrome to capture Violet's parents would be to fake having her prisoner, so he had to wait until she was wearing her Invisigirl costume."

"If he's chosen not to attack us, that can only mean one thing," he realized.

He carefully looked around his room before going back to bed.

"But what?" was his final question.
