Chapter 12: Meanwhile

~~Incredibles 2 came out today!!~~

Hiro stirred as he desperately tried to get some shut eye. He opened his eyes and looked at the ceiling. All of his emotions were mixed up at the moment.

For one, he wanted to go on and save Tadashi, but he knew that they couldn’t go in blind. Then, he wanted to tell Aunt Cass, but how could he? Even if he did she would either want to get the NSA involved or want to join in, and he didn’t want either one happening.

Finally, his new friends. Wilbur was irrational at times, but he was a great leader and a loyal friend. Violet was a bit distant, but Hiro could see that she was really trying to fit in and help.

Penny was sweet and kind, more often than not putting others before herself. It was quite evident due to the fact that she had not asked about her father even after Dr. Calico had mentioned him.

Instead, she comforted Hiro over Tadashi. She was different from the Penny he had seen on TV, but he liked that.

All of these thoughts clouded his mind until he heard the door opening. He quickly closed his eyes to see what the person would do. He heard footsteps coming closer to his bed, but he remained quiet.

“Aww, I hope you’re sleeping well,” Penny whispered with a smile.

Once Hiro heard her say that, it took everything in his power not to blush or move.

“Whoops, I should be quiet and look for Mr. Carrots,” Penny realized.

She looked under the bed to no avail. Then she walked over to the closet. Apparently she had left it at the top by accident. She grabbed a small stool and stood on top to reach the shelf, but in doing so she accidently fell. Hiro jolted up and ran to her side.

“Penny? What happened? Are you okay?” Hiro asked worriedly as he helped her get up.

“Yeah, sorry for waking you up,” Penny apologized sheepishly.

“It’s fine, I couldn’t sleep well anyways,” Hiro admitted.

“You’re still worried about Tadashi, right?” Penny asked.

Hiro nodded silently. Penny smiled and pulled him over to the bed. She sat down and patted the place next to her. Hiro understood and obliged.

“I know this is going to seem very cliche, but do you want to talk about it?” Penny asked.

“I don’t know. I’m just worried. Who knows what they’re doing to him at this very moment. They could be experimenting on him for all we know!” Hiro sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

“If they were that terrible, I’m sure Violet and Wilbur would have us looking for him this very second,” Penny assured him.

“You’re right, but I still worry, you know? He and Aunt Cass are the only family I have,” he sighed.

“I understand. The reason I was so quick to join you guys was to learn more about my dad,” Penny replied.

“Why haven’t you asked about your dad?” Hiro asked her.

“Well, a lot of things have happened, besides, I know this may sound horrible, but I don’t really feel a connection with him. He’s still my dad, and I would like to save him, but I’d also like to know why he left. My mom always told me that it was for the best, that he did it to protect us, but, after my agent forced me to grow up, I came to the conclusion that he didn’t love us,” Penny admitted.

“I’m sure that’s not true. I mean, if he didn’t love you, wouldn’t he have tried to pry himself into your life after you became and actress just to get money?” Hiro asked.

“You have a point,” Penny smiled.
“What… What happened to your parents? You don’t have to answer if you don’t feel comfortable.”

“Don’t worry, it’s fine. They died in a car crash 11 years ago. The reason I understand your hesitance to talk about your dad is because I also can’t remember my parents. I do feel like something is missing, but I can’t say I miss them, although I do wish they were here,” Hiro told her.

“Hey, why don’t you tell me a story? I’m sure you and Tadashi have gone on some adventures,” Penny asked, trying to brighten the mood.

“Yes, actually,” Hiro laughed. “How about I tell you the story of how I found out that Tadashi implanted mini-gps's in all of my hoodies?”

Location: Remote Island
Year: 1963

“This has got to be a flawless plan, you are a genius,” Syndrome said.

“Well, I did get help from a rather intelligent individual,” another Syndrome replied pridefully.

“Can we hurry this along? You said you would help me get my daughter back,” Professor Callaghan reminded them impatiently.

“And the secret to creating Metahumans,” Dr. Calico added.

“A promise is a promise. I’ll get you both what you want once we steal the powers of these Supers and get rid of those kids,” the first Syndrome assured them.

“Which, need I remind you, would already be half-way through if you two had done as I asked you,” the second Syndrome added angrily.

“I barely had time to grab the microbots. How was I to know that Robinson kid knew what I looked like?” the Professor asked.

“And I can’t go out, everyone knows what I look like thanks to Dr. Forrester's friend making money off of what happened,” Dr. Calico asked and glared at the blond man sitting in the corner.

“Hey, thanks to that, I was able to get us this island no problem,” the man replied.

“I could only attack at night and you hadn’t warned me about the Robinson kid having superpowers,” Dr. Calico defended himself.

“He has superpowers!? Cornelius doesn’t have any!” the first Syndrome exclaimed angrily.

“Can we just begin the interrogation?” the second Syndrome asked.

“Very well, everyone knows exactly what to do, right?” the first Syndrome asked after calming himself down.

The rest nodded and got into their positions.

“Andrew, wake up,” the blond man said.

In front of him was Penny’s real father, Andrew Forrester.

“Richard? What’s going on? Where’s Penny?” Mr. Forrester asked frantically.

“Listen buddy, there are some really bad guys here that want to hurt you, but they won’t if you just tell them everything you learned about in your job,” Richard replied with nonchalance.

“What are you talking about? I asked you to protect Penny!” Mr. Forrester exclaimed.

“Yeah, but that wasn’t making my any money until I pitched in the idea for the show,” Richard told him. “ So either you tell us what we want to hear, or your Lucky Penny won’t be so lucky anymore.”

“You Greedy-! I trusted you!” Andrew yelled with anger.

“There are ways to make you talk, but for now, how about we put a pin in it? Boop, there it is,” Richard, Andrew Forresters ex-best friend and Penny’s ex-agent, stated before leaving the room.

“Your invention could save millions of lives,” Syndrome tried to reason with Tadashi.

“I’ll never sell you my inventions,” Tadashi stood his ground.

“I see, so you’re just going to stand your ground until your little hero comes and saves you, right?” Syndrome asked him.

“What are you talking about?” Tadashi Hamada.

“Oh, you don’t know? While you’ve been out and about, your brother has been hanging out with Supers,” Syndrome replied. “He’ll probably become a Superhero to try and rescue you.”

“Are you crazy? Supers don’t exist!” Tadashi retorted.

He remembered his talk with Aunt Cass, but he couldn’t afford to let on how much he knew.

“Oh, but they do. They just pretend they’re normal people like you and me,” Syndrome replied.

“You’re not normal,” Tadashi replied.

“Woah, there. I’d drop the hostility if I were you. Need I remind you, I could have, and still can, kill you, your brother, your friends, his friends, ANYONE I FEEL LIKE! However, that wouldn’t be fun, now would it?”

“So that’s your game? Toying with the lives of those who have done nothing wrong to you?” Tadashi asked with disgust.

“THEY HAVE HUMILIATED ME!” Syndrome exclaimed and pushed a button on his suit that made the walls clear.

Tadashi looked around and found rooms filled with people in costumes. They looked beaten, yet they still tried to break free. Many of those looked familiar, mostly from comics he had read with Hiro. His eyes stopped at a certain cell that had 4 people tied up to the wall by a magnetic field in their arms and legs. There was a man, a woman, a young boy, and a baby, and they were all wearing red suits with a black and gold i on them. It was then that Tadashi finally realized that they were all Supers.

“I will find a way to strip them of their powers, whether I have your invention or not,” Syndrome declared and then laughed.

“Why do you even want to buy it?” Tadashi asked.

“I could steal it, sure, but if that happened I’d have to fight to keep it. Honestly, that’s too much work, so I wanted to try doing this in a civil manner, but I see that won’t be happening.” Syndrome replied.

“You know, I thought that I’d feel accomplished once I found who these people pretended to be when they weren’t fighting crime. Then I realized, whether they’re in costume or not, they still have powers. However, they’re not unkillable, I found that out with Mom and Dad, which was only the first stepping stone into creating a better world.”

“You monster! Do you have any idea how many kids wished they still had their parents with them?” Tadashi asked when he realized what Syndrome meant by that.

“Woah there, it seems I struck a nerve. Trust me, they deserved it. If they had just given me their powers, none of this would have happened,” Syndrome replied while leaving.

“You won’t get away with this!” Tadashi exclaimed in frustration.
