Chapter 10: A Super Secret
"Remember to keep your cool. You've kept secrets of your own," Wilbur reminded him. Hiro nodded and breathed in before opening the door.
“Aunt Cass?” Hiro called once he entered the closed cafe. The rest followed him inside.
“I’m upstairs!” Aunt Cass responded.
Hiro looked at his friends and held his breath.
“Oh, you brought some friends over! Would you like anything to drink or eat?” Aunt Cass asked them and walked over.
“No, thank you,” Violet responded.
“Actually Aunt Cass, I wanted to ask you something,” Hiro said.
“Oh, of course. What did you want to ask, Hiro?” she asked.
“Wait,” Wilbur whispered and the lights went off. Penny gasped and Bolt started barking.
“It’s okay, just a little dark,” Violet comforted her.
“Oh! What happened?” Aunt Cass asked out loud and lit some candles so they could see.
“In case there are any microphones or cameras,” Wilbur whispered to Hiro.
“Must be a power outage,” Hiro told her.
“But the rest of the buildings have-” Aunt Cass questioned.
“Do you have superpowers?” Hiro asked quickly.
“Superpowers?” Aunt Cass asked and laughed a bit.
However, she saw how serious he was and stopped. She glanced at his friends with uncertainty.
“Your imagination is running wild, that’s good. We’ll talk, but first help me get some snacks for your friends and we'll set some candles out,” Aunt Cass told him and pulled him into the small kitchen while Penny, Bolt, Violet, and Wilbur sat down on the couch.
“Hiro this is something private,” she whispered in an attempt to coax him out of the situation.
“They can be here,” Hiro assured her.
“No, this is for their safety,” Aunt Cass sternly told him.
“Trust me, they won’t judge,” Hiro told her and walked to the couch with bags of chips for his friends before she could protest. Aunt Cass ate nervously before walking to the couch.
“Okay, to answer your question, yes, how did you find out?” she responded a bit shakingly as she lit the candles.
“We’ve been experimenting with Baymax and found a gene that gives people powers,” Hiro explain, albeit a bit vaguely, and glanced at Violet and Wilbur.
They nodded and he continued,” Violet can turn herself invisible and Wilbur can control electricity.”
Violet showed her by making her hand invisible and Wilbur created some sparks in between his fingers. Aunt Cass was surprised and continued to listen.
“We decided to scan a bunch of different people, and found, so far, that not everyone has it and those who do have it can have an inactive one or an active one. Inactive is when their powers are not yet unlocked and active is when they are. Your scan said it was active,” Hiro told her.
“So what do you want to know?” Aunt Cass asked.
“Why didn’t you tell us? What powers do you have? Is it a genetic thing? Does Tadashi know?” Hiro bombarded her with questions, but before he could ask anymore Wilbur put a hand on his shoulder to calm him down.
“Aunt Cass, why are the-” Tadashi asked as he walked into the kitchen but stopped mid-sentence.
“Is something wrong?” he asked as he saw Aunt Cass looking distressed.
“Tadashi, sit down. We need to talk,” she responded. Tadashi nodded and walked over.
“I know this may be hard to hear, but the real reason your parents are dead is because they were killed. The reason they were killed was because they were supers,” Aunt Cass explained.
“Wow, wait. What? What are you talking about?” Tadashi asked confused.
“Your parents were superheroes who worked for the NSA. Your mother could levitate objects with her mind and your father could control water, you have powers too Tadashi, but the NSA suppressed your memory, afraid that you would get killed or become a villain. It was part of their new plan to assimilate supers into everyday life,” She tried to explain.
“No, no, this is crazy,” Tadashi whispered,” What game are you trying to play here?”
“Tadashi calm down,” Hiro told him. Aunt Cass grabbed him by the shoulders.
“All those dreams you told me about, really happened. You really were floating in the air, when you dreamt that you could control fire and woke up with new sheets that was why. You had accidently set them on fire, and I had to replace everything before you woke up,” Aunt Cass told him and chuckled sightly at the memory.
“You told me they were just dreams,” Tadashi whispered and sat down.
He ran a hand through his hair and remained wide eyed.
“I know what I said, but I had too. The NSA told me that it was for your own good. I didn’t even have powers then, I thought I was a normal person and so did they. They told me that people born from super parents and don’t manifest their powers at an early age don’t have powers. They said it was the case for me and Hiro, but if anything were to happen for me to contact them. But I couldn’t do it. I can’t do that, I don’t want them to take you away,” Aunt Cass told them and started to tear up.
“Aunt Cass,” Hiro whispered and hugged her.
“I love you both so much,” she whispered and Tadashi joined in.
The rest of the group felt like they were invading their privacy, but remained quiet.
“So, what kind of power do you have?” Tadashi asked trying to get accustomed to it.
“Well,” Aunt Cass smiled and sniffed,” how do you guys think I juggled raising two trouble making boys and running a cafe?” All of a sudden they had 3 aunts in their presence.
“Woah!” Penny, Wilbur, and Violet exclaimed in excitement.
“How did you find out?” Hiro asked.
“Well, it was a few weeks after you two started living with me. Hiro got sick, Tadashi had to go to school, and the bakery was packed with people. I was filled with so much stress that I wanted to scream and then this happened. Of course I freaked out at first, but I had lived with supers my whole life, so I quickly adapted,” she explained and became one again.
“I knew I had seen you behind the counter when you went to drop me off!” Tadashi exclaimed.
“Yeah,” Aunt Cass chuckled,” You don’t know how afraid I’ve been all these years. That one day I’d get a call from school or worse, the NSA, saying that you randomly became engulfed in flames, or that Hiro had started to fly.”
“Don’t worry, your secret is safe with us,” Wilbur assured her.
“As long as we’re around we won’t let anything happen to Hiro,” Penny vowed.
“Yeah, so he’s kind of stuck with us,” Violet told her.
“Thank you so much. I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Aunt Cass thanked them.
“Alrighty then, I’ll put the electricity back on so they don’t get suspicious,” Wilbur told them and snapped his fingers.
“So that’s really your secret ingredient for your fudge brownies? Oh! The lights are back on,” Hiro said and looked around.
“Good, I’m afraid of the dark, and fire,” Penny admitted and looked at the candles.
“It’s alright, we all have something we’re afraid of,” Aunt Cass reassured her,” I’m afraid of ghosts.”
“It’s been nice meeting you, but we should really get going,” Violet told her.
“Right, it’s getting late. I’ll drive you three home,” Aunt Cass told them and grabbed her keys.
“No, it’s quite alright,” Wilbur told her.
“But it’s dark, I don’t feel comfortable letting you three walk home alone,” Aunt Cass responded.
“It’s fine, I’ll take them,” Tadashi offered.
“Are you sure?” she asked.
“Of course, come on you four, let’s get going,” Tadashi told them and ruffled Hiro’s hair.
“Where to first?” Tadashi asked and held the door open for them.
“Well, we should probably go to my apartment building first since it’s the closest,” Wilbur told Tadashi.
“Alright, lead the way,’ Tadashi told him.
“You know, you seem to be taking this whole powers thing rather calmly,” Hiro cautiously admitted to Tadashi.
“Well, it explains quite a lot, and besides if I can somehow reawaken them I could help so many people,” Tadashi reflected out loud.
“That’s my big bro, always thinking about others,” Hiro smiled and nudged him.
“Does anyone else get the feeling that we’re being watched?” Violet asked them.
“The lab is only a few blocks away, let’s make a run for it,” Wilbur suggested and looked around.
“I second that,” Penny agreed and the 6 of them started to run. They could hear a sinister chuckle from behind them.
“Let me go!” Tadashi screamed when a giant claw captured him.
“Tadashi!” Hiro screamed and stopped running.
“Hiro!” Penny yelled and pushed him out of the way before another claw caught her. Bolt started barking in a futile attempt to scare away the robot.
“Hahaha! Syndrome will be pleased, if only I could say the same for your father,” a man mocked Penny from atop the robot.
“Dr. Calico?” Penny asked.
“Well if it isn’t Dr. Forrester’s lucky Penny,” Dr. Calico smirked.
“Let them go!” Wilbur yelled and shot some electricity towards him and the cameras on the buildings.
The electricity seemed to have been stopped before it even touched the robot.
“A deflector shield. Typical,” Wilbur groaned.
“I’ll deal with you later,” Dr. Calico warned. He pressed something inside of the robot and a portal appeared.
“No!” Violet said and created a force field around the robot, but not it’s claws.
Wilbur teleported to the claw holding Penny. He got out a kind of rod from his pocket and wedged it in between the claw.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Dr. Calico screeched and tried moving his claws around but couldn’t.
“Let me go, or else I’ll crush them,” Dr. Calico warned and tightened his grip around Tadashi. Tadashi groaned from the pain.
“Don’t… Don’t listen to him!” Tadashi told them, barely able to speak from the pain.
“Don’t! He’ll only hurt more people!” Penny agreed with Tadashi but groaned when the robot tightened its grip on her stomach.
Wilbur managed to make an opening big enough for Penny to fall out of. She started falling to the ground. Hiro managed to catch her but slid on his stomach. He hissed in pain and Penny groaned.
Wilbur was flung off into a wall, a small crack was heard as he slid down and held his leg.
“Try that little stunt again and the boy gets it,” Dr. Calico told them.
His now free claw extended and a chainsaw came out, coming dangerously close to Tadashi’s neck.
“Listen to him and let go!” Hiro told Violet. Violet was hysterical as she looked around unsure of what to do. In the end she sighed in defeat and let her hands fall as the shield disappeared.
“Good choice,” Dr. Calico told her before stepping into the portal.
“Tadashi!” Hiro called and ran towards them.
Tadashi reached for his hand but the portal closed before he could grab it.
