Chapter 3
As the days passed by, I continued to steal things for Isla and her family. But I didn't stop there. There would be times when I would see a hungry child in ragged clothes and couldn't help but steal food for them so they wouldn't go hungry.
It's been about a week now and I continued to stay with Isla's family. I know that I can't stay here forever, but I also feel bad about leaving them. Especially Milo.
I've watched him come down with numerous illnesses from nausea and stomach aches to colds and fevers. It seems like he spends half his life being sick and lying in bed.
So right now, I will do anything I can to help him and his family. I sat quietly on a roof, giggling to myself as I watched the people below frantically searching for the "master thief".
I took a quick bite of the stolen apple in my hand and gazed down at the silver bracelet on my wrist. That little girl is going to be so happy.
After finishing my apple, I merged into the shadows and raced across buildings to the train station. I saw the little girl walking with her older brother toward the train.
I emerged and rushed over to them. "Hey! Wait!"
The two kids turned around to look at me. I stopped and crouched in front of the little girl handing her the bracelet.
"Here you go. This is the one you wanted, isn't it?"
The girl gasped and slipped on the silver bracelet before smiling wide. "Thank you so much! It looks just like the one mom used to have!"
"I really appreciate that you did for my sister," the boy said with a smile. "We can't thank you enough."
I returned his smile and replied, "It was no problem. Seeing you both so happy is thanks enough."
Hearing the train whistle, the two kids began rushing to get on board. They looked back at me and waved. With the train starting to move, I waved back at them and watched the train leave the station.
With a smile of content on my face, I turned and left the station. I wonder if Milo will want me to draw with him today. I guess I'll head back and find out.
Bixlow's pov
"Hey, Freed, find a job yet?"
I strolled over to the request board where Freed stood and scanned over the different requests. He let out a sigh.
"No. Most of these requests don't pay much and are too simple for wizards like us."
I followed his gaze to the list of jobs and skimmed through them. He's right. Most of these aren't even worth the effort. But there was one that caught my eye and I pointed it out.
"What about this one?"
Freed looked at the one I pointed to. "Subduing a common thief? That hardly sounds like a job for the Thunder Legion."
"But check out the reward."
I noticed Freed's visible eye widen slightly. "800,000 jewels for catching a thief? That's a lot for such a simple mission."
"Maybe not. The description says that the thief uses magic and is uncatchable. Sounds pretty interesting to me."
"Sounds interesting!" my babies repeated.
Freed looked over to where Mirajane stood behind the counter. "I'm taking this job in Onibus, Mira."
"Okay, good luck out there!" she happily said with a smile.
Freed began leaving and I quickly caught up and walked with him. "Hey, you're not leaving me out of this, Freed. I'm coming too."
"Very well. I guess you were getting bored since Evergreen left us behind for that solo mission."
"Got that right!" I said while sticking my tongue out and grinning. "Now let's go, babies!"
"Let's go! Let's go!"
Freya's pov
I entered the front door of Isla and Liam's home. I looked around, not seeing anyone. Where is everybody?
I headed upstairs to see if they were up there. I quickly found Isla and Liam sitting in front of Milo's bed. I heard their quiet sobs and slowly approached them.
My eyes widened when I saw Milo asleep and lying in bed. He had a pained expression while beads of sweat dripped down his forehead.
"M-Milo?"
Isla and Liam looked back at me with teary eyes. I know it's normal for Milo to get sick, but this must be serious if his parents are this upset.
"What's wrong with him?" I asked with worry.
With Isla breaking down in tears again, Liam answered, "He came down with something this afternoon. It's a strange illness we've never seen before. What's worse is we don't know how to cure it."
My eyes grew watery as I struggled to use my voice. "B-But...there has to be a way. He's been sick plenty of times and still been okay."
Isla suddenly hugged me. "It's not the same this time, Freya. We have no idea how to heal him this time. And if we don't find a cure soon, he'll...he'll..."
She broke out in loud sobs, unable to finish her sentence. I can't believe this. This can't be happening. The tears spilled from my eyes and I returned Isla's hug.
Once she pulled away, she hugged Liam and continued to cry. I stood beside Milo's bed and peered down at him. He looked miserable. I just wish there was someway to help him. I don't want him to die.
I bent down and muttered to him, "Please, Milo, you can't die. You can fight it. You have to."
I moved a few strands of hair out of his face. But when my fingers brushed against his head, a vision filled my mind.
Milo's lifeless body lied in his bed. His parents mourned the loss of their son. Then I found a book and showed it to them. That book had the cure. But it was already too late.
I blinked my eyes once my vision ended. That book. I must get it. I wiped my eyes and looked over at Isla and Liam.
"I know what to do," I told them. "I know how to cure him. I have to go, but I'll be back with a way to save him. I promise."
They remained quiet and looked at me with slight hope in their eyes. I quickly left them and headed back into Onibus Town. I noticed the sky was beginning to darken and quickly made my way to the bookstore.
Going inside, I ignored the woman at the counter and quickly began searching. I skimmed through shelves of books in an attempt to find the one from my vision. Where is it? It must be here.
Not being able to find it, I left and started looking around. If it's not at the bookstore then where could it be? This doesn't make any sense. I began sadly walking down the street when I saw something out of the corner of my eye.
I felt my eyes widen when I saw the small man from the theater. In his hand was a large, thick, green book with spiral designs. That's the book. I watched the little man enter the theater with a small group of people.
I followed them in and listened to them. "Thank you. This book will make a nice prop for our next play."
I frowned and watched the small man place the book with the other props. They're going to use such an important book as a prop?! I stayed hidden until they left the room. I then went over and grabbed the book.
"Hey! What are you doing in here?!"
I turned to see three men in the doorway. I quickly rushed toward them, dodging around them and running out of the theater.
"Get back here! Someone stop that thief!"
I listened to their footsteps behind me and ran down the street. I kept a firm grip on the book, not wanting anything to happen to it. I will make it back. Milo's life depends on it.
Bixlow's pov
I sighed as I walked alongside Freed. "So are we supposed to just wait for a robbery or something? That's going to take forever!"
"How boring!" my babies stated.
Freed took a quick glance at me. "Be patient, Bixlow. You can't expect to just bump into a thief."
Right after he said that, there was a black blur as someone rounded the corner in front of me and bumped into my chest. The person staggered back slightly.
It looked to be a girl. She had a black cloak draped around her body and a hood pulled over her head, obscuring her face. She clutched a large, green book to her chest.
"Whoops, sorry," I apologized.
The girl said nothing. She simply glanced behind her before rushing past Freed and me. Almost as soon as she did, a group of people came around the corner and ran past us after the girl.
"Come back here, you thief!"
I smirked at Freed. "You were saying?"
"Never mind. Let's go."
I nodded and followed him. We chased after the group ahead of us. They soon turned down an alley and we did the same. We stopped, seeing that the alley was empty.
"What the...? Where'd she go?" they mumbled, looking around in confusion.
I noticed a dark shadow moving up the side of the building and pointed it out to Freed. "Look, there she goes."
Freed's gaze fixed on the moving shadow before it disappeared over the building. "I see, so she does use magic. Shadow magic to be exact. You thinking what I'm thinking?"
I grinned and stuck my tongue out. "Oh yeah! Do your thing, Freed!"
"Do your thing! Do your thing!"
