Discovering a Power
Long after the battle with Gaea, Percy and Annabeth were married with three kids: two boys and one girl. Every year they took a one week long vacation to the beach. One year Percy and Annabeth were sitting on a blanket while their youngest boy Luke was building a sandcastle, their 16 year old daughter Silena was standing by the water talking to a group of kids who seemed to be her age, and their oldest boy Charlie was swimming in the ocean. While all of their kids were smart and loved the ocean, none of them had ever showed power over water before. As she was his only daughter, Percy was very protective over Silena. So when he saw a boy who he did not know wrap his arm around Silena's waist, the ocean began to churn violently. Annabeth, while also very protective of her only daughter, knew that Silena would be mad if Percy interfered. She put her hand gently on her husbands arm and shook her head softly. Percy wanted to argue with his wife but knew better; when Annabeth saw his posture slump, she knew he wouldn't do anything.
As the couple had their silent exchange they nearly missed what happened next. Charlie, who had just now noticed what was going on with his little sister, immediately stopped swimming. He recognized the boys in the group from when he had seen them earlier that day and overheard them make a bet about how many girls they could hook up with by the end of the week. Refusing to let his sister become one of their victims, he felt a surge of anger go through him as he hurriedly began to swim back to the shore. But before he could get to them a huge wave came out of nowhere and crashed onto them, leaving everyone but Silena soaking wet.
While the group stumbled around and tried to figure out where that wave had come from, Charlie got out of the water, punched the boy who had been flirting with his little sister in the face, and said,
"If any of you come near her again you will regret it." With that he gently grabbed Silena and pulled her away from the group while lecturing her about the evil minds of boys.
"And you say I'm the overprotective one," Percy said to Annabeth after they watched the scene unfold. It was clear that what his son had just done had not registered in Percy's mind yet.
"Now seaweed brain, I know you didn't just cause that wave so do you realize what that means? Do you realize who did just summon that wave?" She watched as her husbands expression shifted as her words sunk in. Then out of nowhere, Percy jumped up and ran to his eldest son with a huge smile on his face. He dragged Charlie back into the water where Annabeth could clearly tell that he was explaining what had just caused the big wave. Silena walked up to her mom and gave her a look that clearly asked if she wanted to know what had just happened.
"How about we go get some ice-cream with your little brother while your dad celebrates with Charlie. They probably won't be out of the water for at least a few hours." Seeing the confused look on her daughters face Annabeth added, "I'll explain everything over ice-cream."
