—In which the world ends for the first time.

On the first day of October 1989, 43 children were born in the most unusual way, as none of the women giving birth had been pregnant that morning and it could not be explained where these utterly strange children came from. 43 children in whom the eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves found a questionable fascination and did everything he possibly could to bring as many children as possible under his care.

He showed no hesitation, paid sums far too large to mention here, and, after a considerable time had passed, he presented the result of his unusual approach:
