Victory and Loss

Percy P.O.V.

I watched as Flare charged back into the battle with a shout for her sister. I was still in shock that Ambrosia died. I barely knew her, but it was my fault, nonetheless. She brought me back to camp, so I should've done a better job protecting her. I threw myself back into the battle, fighting with a newfound vengeance.

I fell into the familiar rhythm of the battle. Dodge, slash, roll, attack, repeat. Monster after monster fell to Riptide, bursting into clouds of gold dust. Gold dust littered the battlefield, making it look like King Midas had come through with his golden touch.

Soon, all the monsters had fallen to Camp Half-Blood. I surveyed the aftermath of the fight. Campers were helping each other off the ground. The Apollo campers were carrying stretchers onto the battlefield and left with severely wounded campers. My heart sunk into my stomach when I saw the numerous demigods that stayed unmoving on the ground. I hear hoove-steps as Chiron approached me.

"I'm sorry, my boy. The job of counting the dead and wounded unfortunately falls on your shoulders." He said, placing a caring hand on my shoulder.

I sighed, already having known that this job would fall to me. I ran to the Big House and grabbed the clipboard that accounts for all campers after a battle before beginning my melancholy task.

~~~
After walking through all the cabins, the infirmary, and the battle field, we had 35/93 campers wounded and 12 dead. That left us with only 46 healthy campers. I turned in my clipboard to Chiron, then I walked to my cabin and collapsed onto my bunk as a wave of exhaustion hit me. Soon, I succumbed to the darkness of sleep.
~~~

I was woken from my sleep by Flare knocking on my cabin door. I opened the door to her tear streaked face. I didn't get a chance to say anything before she charged at me and wrapped her arms around my torso, she started sobbing.

"Ambrosia's dead!" She cried, "It's all your fault. If you're as great as everyone says you are, you should've been able to protect her!"

Flare stopped hugging me and started punching my stomach. I just took each punch, absorbing it as she attacked me and cried. With a final punch, she turned on her heel and left my cabin entry way. Without thinking, I called after her.

"Flare, wait!" She turned as I shouted her name, "I'm sorry, I really am."

Whew, I got an update out. I'm so sorry it took so long to update, and I'm sorry it's a short chapter. I'll try to update again soon.
