Chapter 27: Born to run
A/N: Please listen to the song! It's a bit - okay, it's awfully cheesy but I find it beautiful + it kinda fits the chapter :)
REMY'S POV
Nour is hurt. That's the only thought that comes into my mind, as I stand at the doorway of his bedroom. He's hurt and I'm too late and my wolf is whimpering his misery at seeing someone I care so much about hurted.
"Say something, just don't stay there looking at me as if I was a dead corpse. And close the goddamm door, we don't need an audience" he snaps at me, venom lacing his voice.
Agressivity was always his defense, I realize that now. That spurs me into action and I take a couple of steps in his direction. He doesn't say anything, just keeps looking at me warily.
"Do you have any bandages in your bedroom?" I ask, doing my best to keep my voice neutral, because I can tell that if I give Nour any excuses to start an argument, he will jump on the occasion. He will do anything to distract me from thinking about what I've just witnessed.
"Why should I tell you, wolfie?"
"Because otherwise, I'm calling my brother to have a proper look at your thigh and you know as well as I do that I can physically prevent you from leaving the bedroom"
"I could shift" he suggests, making me tense for a moment before he starts laughing hysterically.
"Don't worry" he explains as he eventually calms down "I won't shift. I can't"
"What? Nour, this isn't funny."
"I just can't" he repeats in a cold, detached tone. "I don't why. Since the day I overheard you and Matt talking about what - about what that lion... shit, about what that lion did to me, I can't shift anymore. So, I figured it was probably related to the - the incident."
I can't help myself but to lean forward, hoping to comfort him but he immediately jumps on the bed, out of my reach.
"Nour" I ask in a pleading voice, not caring about how weak I sound right now. "That's not right. Don't call it 'the incident' like it's nothing. I want to - "
"Don't touch me" he interrupts. "And I don't want your pity. I don't need it. I'm not weak like you. What I want - what I need it's, it's not, it's just - "
He stops as his lower lip starts trembling. He looks at me with an horrified expression, as if crying was the most shameful thing to indulge in, before hastily looking at the window, turning his back to me so I can no longer see his face.
I wait a few moments, desperate to go and comfort him but aware that I have to respect his wish to be left alone. When he turns again in my direction, his expression is closed-off, although his eyes are a bit red.
"I will make these lions pay" I promise him.
Another humorless laugh.
"And how, may I ask, Mister Knows-It-All?
"I have a plan" I say firmly, before realising my mistake. Nour is everything but an idiot, and I watch with resignation as realisation slowly dawns on him.
"That's what Renan and you were discussing over the phone, weren't you?" he asks, looking somehow relieved though I don't why. "Tell me more" he orders.
"Renan will meet the lions. He will keep them distracted while I sneak into their house"
"That's your plan? Are you kidding me?" he asks with an incredulous expression. "Why are you even going to their house? What you need is to meet them in person and make them suffer"
"Listen, Nour. That won't work. I need to go to their house because I have discovered something that could help us - "
"I don't want to hear about it. But by all means don't mind me: go to their house. Heck, you can even clean up their kitchen and prepare their meals if you want to, Snow White. I'm going with Renan. I will kill them - slowly"
He is standing now, looking fierce, the wound on his thigh and his almost breakdown long forgotten. I know better, though. He's not in his right state of mind right now and it would be irresponsible of me to let him leave the flat.
"You're staying here" I say in a gentle yet firm tone.
I'm a dominant werewolf, so it would have been enough to make most people obey me but Nour is a stubborn one. Of course he wouldn't submit so easily, but it was worth trying.
"Oh, really?" he asks with a mocking tone.
I barely repress a growl. My wolf doesn't take this kind of behaviour too lightly but I need to calm down because I don't want Nour to be afraid of me, especially not after what happened.
"Yes, really"
"Let's see"
Before I have time to blink, he pushes me rather harshly and I almost fall on the floor. Thankfully, my instincts kick in and I manage to grab his waist before he has time to reach the door.
"I told you I wouldn't let you run away from me again, especially when you're so adamant on going down the path of danger and self-destruction." I pant against his ear, before forcefully pulling him toward the center of the room. Before we've taken more than a few steps, he elbows be in the ribs before stomping on my foot. This time I do fall, but I take him with me.
I barely dodge his punch aimed at my jaw, before pinning both his wrists above his head. Even as I pin him down beneath me, I try to ease off my weight from his wounded thigh.
"Get off me, asshole" he spits, but it's hard not to notice the fear in his eyes.
"Don't be afraid of me, Nour. Please. I will let you go if you promise not to go after the lions"
"I can't promise that" he sighs. "It's not like I care about what will happen to me if I go. Now, let go before I make you" he tries again, baring his teeth.
I do the only thing I can think about.
I delicately bite him at the junction where his neck and shoulder meet.
See, wolves have morphins in their teeth that can calm down their preys, and make them more compliant. However, it mostly works on animals. It won't work on shifters, unless their is a fair amount of trust between the two shifters, and I'm no longer sure about how Nour feels about me.
I have to admit that I'm a bit surprised when his features soften and all the tension leaves his body.
"I feel safe around you. I don't know why but I still do. My fox is a pansy so don't flatter yourself too much " he mumbles as an explanation, his blushing making him look even more adorable.
"Huh-huh. Well, you will stay in this state for a couple of hours, so it should give me enough time to do what I have to do, before going back to you." I promise him, and he nods in an uncommited way.
I lift him and gather him in my arms, before placing him as gently as I can on the bed. He can barely raise his arms and I would feel guilty for putting him in such a state, but at least he looks more relaxed now and I know he will be safe.
I quickly take care of his bleeding thigh - I will really need to talk to him about it later - before covering him with a soft blanket.
"I will be back soon" I promise, wanting to kiss him goodbye but repressing the urge to do so.
"If you don't kill them, I will end you" he assures me and I just smile, unbothered by the empty threat and internally marvelling at how cute he looks right now, with only his head still apparent.
" Rémy?" he asks as I grab the door's handle.
"Yes, love?" I reply without thinking, before blushing at the involuntary use of a pet name. I brace myself for any harsh comeback but he stays silent, looking at me with wide eyes before eventually whispering:
"Please, Rémy, come back soon"
WILL'S POV
"You're seconds away from falling asleep, big bad wolf" the cheeky chick beneath me dares say to me, even though I'm currently pinning him on the floor. "And you're just delaying the inevitable, Will. I'm going. Worst, I will have to lift up your body from me and it's gonna be exhausting, you weigh more than a dead donkey"
If I hadn't been drugged by this little shit, I would have tied him up to my bed and force him to spill the bean - okay, that sounded more kinky than intended. However, I have to admit he is right: I'm not gonna win the fight against the Sandman today. I can only hope that the effects of the drugs will quickly wear off and that Oli and I will be able to locate Renan before he has time to do something stupid.
"You better watch out when we find you and bring you back home, Renan" I warn him, feeling my eyelids flutter.
"Oh? Why is that so?" he asks innocently, but come on, who is fooled by his innocent act?
"Because, and believe me on this, you won't escape your punishment this time" I growl, my grasp on him slowly weakening.
Before I fall asleep, I still hear him whispering his last words. He probably didn't think I would hear them, but I have an excellent hearing and so I did.
"As long as it's a sexual punishment"
********* (an hour later)
"Not now, Will." Oli tells me for the hundredth time, before slightly squeezing my neck in warning.
It's a good thing that Oli is the more dominant one - even though it might not look like it - and that my wolf tends to listen to him, or I would already be at these assholes' throats.
Oli isn't doing much better, though. His control is slipping, that much is obvious. He wants to fight these lions for threatening our chick, for blackmailing him in order to get their filthy hands on Nour.
Yes, we know everything, now.
It's understable that Renan would hesitate to admit the truth to us, but Oli is as scared as I am and he is mad at Renan for taking so much risks. The chick should have think twice before running away.
Like I said, he better watch out for his ass when we get back home, because Oli is very creative when it comes to punishments.
Sexual punishments, of course. Don't worry Renan, you'll get what comes at you.
It's been at least ten minutes now since Oli and I are hidding in the bushes, eavesdropping the conversation between Renan and the lions. Thankfully, he did not give us enough drugs, probably not taking into account the fact that we are shifters and are not knocked out so easily. We woke up about half an hour after he drugged us, and managed to find Renan by following his scent.
I have to admit, the way the chick is handling things is pretty impressive. He doesn't look too afraid, and he is talking with his head up, his voice unwavering.
I still don't understand why he would take so much risks, though, especially since it's pretty obvious to me that he is only trying to buy time.
What for? Did he plan something with Rémy? I'm going to kill the guy for thinking he can use my chick as a bait.
"I promise I will bring you Nour tomorrow morning at the latest" Renan eventually says.
"Empty words. Why should we trust a useless human?" the older brother retorts in an exasperated tone.
They haven't shifted yet, and I guess that's the main reason why Renan hasn't lost his calm composture. You can still tell they're dangerous, though. It's apparent in the way their eyes keep changing colours, in the way they move. They look like predators happy to play with their preys.
"Because I love my mum more than anyone else" Renan declares in a slightly shivering voice, making him look even more convincing.
"You know we will kill you no matter what, right?" the youngest lion asks in a deceptively sweet voice. "But you're right, if you bring us Nour we will let your mum live her last moments. We might even not tell her how we dismembered her only son. After all, the poor lady has already suffered so much and we're not heartless monsters"
"I want to kill them, Oli" I whisper and Oli nods: "I want to kill them, too, trust me love"
When we look up again the oldest lion is now standing very close to Renan. Much too close to my liking.
"Very well, little one. We will be waiting for you to bring us Nour tomorrow morning, same place, at dawn. However, don't forget that if you come back again empty handed again, not only will we kill you and your mother slowly - we will also make sure that the disgusting dogs you seem so fond of exhale their last breath."
"I understand" Renan says bravely but I can now see the fear in his eyes.
"Perfect. See you tomorrow, doll"
With that, they quickly leave and we immediately go out of our hiding places. If Renan is surprised to see us, he doesn't say anything, instead looking in the direction where the lions left.
"Renan, care to explain?" Oli growls, putting his arms around Renan in a protective way.
"I hope it worked" he whispers. "I trust Rémy. He will call me anytime soon. We won't have to wait for too long"
I guess our little sarcastic chick is feeling pretty emotional, because he turns in our direction, looking at us with shining eyes, before grabbing our hands.
"How dared he threaten you as well? I will kill them both before they lay their filthy paws on you"
Aw, see, I was wrong. Pretty chick isn't just feeling emotional. He is ready to take the bitches down.
