Chapter 7: Thieves

The six kits slithered out of their den and around back to the medicine cat den. It was easier than it should've been, as there seemed to be a strange lack of Warriors in sight. But before they could reach their destination, a black cat's body emerged, white tail tip flicking from side to side. It was Grasstail.
"What do we do now?" Brackenkit whispered.
"Follow her, obviously!" Foxkit said. The others trailed after her. She felt very in charge, leading them all. But what if we get in trouble? Soon enough, Brackenkit and Tallkit charged in front of her, and she realized that she was more than happy to give them the reins. Finally, the two halted. Everyone else stopped behind them.
"What is it?" Whispered Rosekit, who had lagged behind with her leg.
     "Grasstail must've stopped," Foxkit replied.
Then Willowkit sneezed. The others abruptly turned around and stared at her with startled and worried looks. "S-sorry..." she sniffed.
"Why didn't she hear us?" Foxkit asked, raising her voice a bit. She couldn't see Grasstail through her brothers and Tallkit.
"The water," Blizzardkit responded. "It's really loud."
Now that she thought about it, she hadn't noticed the hissing sound of rushing water slapping the banks. We're near the river! "This is the border for MistClan!"
"Ha! You're right!" Brackenpaw said, at almost full volume. He started off in another direction, along the river.
"Brackenpaw! Where is he going?" Rosekit wondered.
"He wants to see the river up close, so Grasstail won't see him," Foxkit guessed.
"But is the river safe?" Blizzardkit asked.
"I don't know." She and the others trotted to where they found Brackenkit at the water's edge. Tallkit joined him within seconds, followed by a wary Foxkit. She glanced around. They were surrounded by the Mossrocks. They lined the river all the way to Rock point, where she could see the waterfall. Grasstail must have come to collect moss.
"Come on guys!" Brackenkit called to the rest. "Are you scared?"
"Of course not!" Rosekit's lilac eyes narrowed. "It just doesn't look safe!"
"I agree," Blizzardkit and Willowkit said together.
     "So you are scared then!"
"It's isn't my that I don't want to drown like you, thank you very much!" She said indignantly. "Unlike you, Clanmates at camp are actually going to miss me if I pass."
Brackenkit frowned. He and Foxkit spoke at the same time. "Dirty little-" "Would you two-"
     "AHHHH!"
Tallkit had fallen in the river headfirst, and was now gasping for breath, desperately paddling. But the swift current was too strong. His head dipped under once, then bobbed back up, and went under again. The other kits were mewling scared cries. He was too far out; no one could reach him.
Suddenly, a call sounded ahead. "Over here!" The kits froze. It was coming from the other side of the river.
Leaving Tallkit in terror, they scurried away and hid behind the bushes. The river and Tallkit were still in sight through the leaves. He was still attempting to swim, but his energy would not last much longer.
"I knew this was going to happen! I told you!" Blizzardkit whispered nervously.
Foxkit gazed across the river. She could see why it was called MistClan. Thick mist that hung over spongy grass made seeing the territory difficult. The sound from MistClan grew louder as a whole patrol of cats skidded to a halt at the edge of the river. There were four cats. A small, light brown tabby she-cat, a big black tom, a muscular brown tabby tom, and a tiny, dark brown she-cat with white spots.
The small, light brown she-cat saw Tallkit and jumped into the river. Tallkit did not seem to care, he was too busy paddling frantically. "Hazelfreeze!" Shouted the black warrior. "What are you doing?"
"Beetlepool, my sister is rescuing a kit!" The muscular brown tom yelled.
Hazelfreeze was now carrying Tallkit to the shore, struggling under his weight. Tallkit stopped paddling, relieved. The moment she set him on the bank, the other cats began sniffing.
Hazelfreeze was about to speak, but the tiny she-cat broke in. "This kit carries the scent of BrightClan!"
"Really?" Beetlepool questioned. He sniffed again, and then his questioning look faded. "Fawnpaw's right."
"Nice job, young one," praised the brown tom.
     Fawnpaw smiled. "Thanks Ottertail!"
The cats stared at the coughing Tallkit. I'm so glad he's okay! Foxkit thought. She wondered what they were going to do with Tallkit. Are they going to take him?! Nightstripe won't be pleased. Oh, I knew we were getting ourselves into trouble!
"What's your name, kit?" Hazelfreeze asked.
     Tallkit replied, "Tallkit."
Hazelfreeze took a step closer. "I'm Hazelfreeze, and this is-"
Beetlepool cleared his throat loudly, and Hazelfreeze fell silent.
"What were you doing in that river?" Beetlepool asked with a raised voice.
     Tallkit flinched. "Um...."
"You should be in BrightClan, not on the border causing trouble!" Beetlepool scolded.
Tallkit shrank. "I can't go back." He looked across the river.
"I'll carry you back," Fawnpaw offered.
"No, I will," the brown tom said. "You're still too small to carry that weight across this river." He grabbed Tallkit by the scruff of his neck and dropped into the water. Foxkit watched him paddle across easily and drop him on BrightClan territory. Then he quickly swam back.
"Now go!" Beetlepool shouted across to him. "I have the feeling this was an accident, but I'll still report it to Rushingstar if you don't leave right away!"
Shivering, Tallkit ran back into the bushes, bowling over the other kits. "Are you okay?" Asked Blizzardkit.
Tallkit couldn't speak. His black fur was ice-cold and soaked. His jaw was moving rapidly as he shivered.
"Let me get you to Grasstail," Rosekit volunteered.
"I'm coming too!" Said Brackenkit and Blizzardkit together.
Foxkit stood where she was. "I want to watch them."
     "Why?" Blizzardkit questioned.
     "Yeah why?" Brackenkit added.
"I just want to make sure they leave. You guys go on."
          "Okay," mewed Rosekit.
They bounded off in the direction of the camp. Boy are we gonna be in trouble once the queens find out how Tallkit got wet! That reminds me, where are the queens?
Foxkit shook off that thought so she could concentrate on her spying. The cats were still there, listening. Listening for Tallkit, is what Foxkit guessed. Ottertail glanced right and left before splashing into the rushing water. To Foxkit's surprise, the others did the same.
What are they doing? Obviously the best swimmer, Hazelfreeze exited the river first. More confidently now, they headed toward the Mossrocks. They each began to rip strips of moss from the rocks. Beetlepool went to the farthest rock, the closest one to Foxkit. Only separated by the bush, Beetlepool's tail came within a foot to Foxkit. She held her breath. When they all had at least two bundles of moss in their jaws, they jumped into the river, swam back, and left the river carrying moss.
     "They're thieves!"
