Chapter 3: Conflict on the Border
Wind ruffled her red fur and carried the smell of rabbit. Leaves danced through the air and swirled around her, Foxkit was an apprentice now. She got up to her paws and then dropped into a hunting crouch. A rabbit stood in front of her, unaware of the danger. Foxkit was about to spring forward, but then the wind whispered, "Hey!"
"What?" Foxkit asked. She was angry that she was interrupted in the middle of hunting; the rabbit had sensed her and hopped away.
"Wake up!"
"What?"
"Wake up!" The wind was starting to sound like a real cat. "Wake up!"
Foxkit woke up with a shock. She shook her head.
"Come on! There's a clan meeting!" Mewed a white she-kit.
"What? Who...are you?"
The white cat looked confused. She tilted her head to the side. A few moments later, she laughed and responded, "Oh I see. It's a game." She sat down. "Well I'm not playing."
Foxkit sat up so she was face to face with the cat. Slowly, her mind went twisted, and her memories warped. It wasn't a stranger, it was Blizzardkit. Am I going crazy?
Foxkit sighed. "Never mind, sorry. I'm coming." She stood up, her eyes still blurry and sleep still hanging above her head like a cloud. They joined the other kits by the entrance. Tallkit was sitting by Nightstripe. They were below the Tallstone with the other cats.
"The Dawn Patrol came back with some news," Flamingstar began, frowning. "They have seen leftovers of prey and bones left on our territory near the border between BrightClan and LightningClan. They have been hunting on our territory. It also seems that they want us to know it!"
The BrightClan cats sent murmurs of fury amongst themselves. Tallkit was lucky to hear it all up front like that. I wish I was old enough...
"I am asking the Border Patrols to pay extra attention to that border." Many cats nodded their agreement.
Flamingstar went on, "Moving on. As you all know, the Gathering is tonight." Every full moon, all the clans got together to meet at the Rocky point, where all the borders met. The Rocky point was a pile of big rocks with a larger flat one in the middle. The river turned at the Rocky point, and it flowed down from the mountains as a waterfall in the distance. That river also separated EchoClan territory from MistClan territory. At the Gatherings, there was a truce, because Gatherings were peaceful meetings.
"I want to bring Deadwhisker, Dustfur, Runningclaw, Mistypool, Mudheart, Tornleg, Blackstripe, and Dapplepaw. The elders, of course, will stay behind. I need the rest of you to guard the camp. Apprentices who are not going, go and hunt, but please stay together. The Clan needs to restock the fresh kill pile," Flamingstar finished.
Crookedpaw and Frostpaw nodded.
Foxkit wished she could go to Gatherings, but only the leader, deputy, some of the warriors, and one to two apprentices could go. Lots of information was thrown about in Gatherings, so it was a privilege for the apprentices to go. I want to know what LightningClan has to say for themselves.
As Foxkit lost herself in her own thoughts, the cats beneath the Tallstone dispersed. Everyone was looking forward to that night.
Foxkit walked back to the corner of the nursery and laid down. Her brothers were still waiting by the entrance for their mother. They wanted to go to Clan meetings just as much as she did, but Whitefeather said no. Blizzardkit and Brackenkit wanted to see everything. Whitefeather came back and laid down next to Foxkit. Soon, Foxkit fell asleep.
