Two Halves

The morning came and with it wistful smiles of the night before. Neither regretting what had taken place.

They cleaned up one at a time and as Yu-Jun came from the restroom a rumbling could be heard from outside. He looked to Evie who'd already cleaned up and sat on the sofa. She stopped trying to open the energy bar in her hands. Yu-Jun then sprinted to the surveillance room. A tank rumbled over crumbled walls and debris. His heart clenched in his chest. Did he really see what he thought he did?

He stood rooted to the floor watching the people in military uniform move down the street in front of the courthouse.

Evie pushed her chair into the room and squinted at the flags on the soldiers' uniforms. Her heart leapt into her throat. "They're Korean." She said pulling Yu-Jun from his daze.

A blast rocked their hideaway and all the tvs went dark, banging could be heard on the shelter door soon after.

"I don't think the door will hold if they blast it. They're not meant for direct hits." Evie looked at Yu-Jun.

"I'll open it. It'll be okay. I promise." He bent down and kissed her forehead.

Evie stayed back waiting in the doorway of the surveillance room.

Yu-Jun shouted omething in Korean before he put his hands on the door. The yelling outside stopped. The door swung open and Evie's heart constricted as cheers went up. They started to pull Yu-Jun out and he started shouting in Korean.

Evie couldn't make out what they were saying. Her Korean consisted of very few words. They still tugged at Yu-Jun but he stood his ground refusing to move. Logic put the pieces together slowly and she knew this was not their war, they were here for him and he was refusing. She began to scoot forward but stopped as a commanding officer stepped into the room stopping in front of Yu-Jun. Tears ran down his cheeks as he tried explaining something to the man before him. Evie felt the air leave her lungs as the man shook his head no. The message was clear they were here for him and she couldn't go with him. Tears dropped into her hands. She didn't know when they left her eyes, only that a void was opening in her chest where her heart once beat.

She took a shaky breath and smiled through her tears. "You have to go." She said looking at Yu-Jun.

He turned to her, a new fissure racing across his heart with each word that left her lips. She wanted him safe, he knew, but how could he leave her. He began to shake his head no and he saw her lips as she whispered as though she were next to him, "I love you, truely." His heart shattered and they dragged him from the room as he screamed her name.
