The Calm

Evie and Yu-Jun both released a breath neither had realized they'd been holding. Yu-Jun laid his forehead against hers in a moment of relief. He wanted to kiss her but stopped himself. He took a deep breath and set the fire extinguisher back on the floor, then gently lifted her and put her to the side. He didn't miss the tears that rolled down Evie's cheeks, likely she thought the same as he did, he wished to do something for whoever screamed but at the same time he didn't want to be discovered and what could he do really? Die with them? How would that help anyone? He gently wiped her tears with his thumbs and lightly kissed her forehead before moving to the door.

The wheel was easier to turn now that it had already started to turn and he soon had it unlocked. He pushed it open and Evie hopped inside and turned on the lights resting against the inner wall. Yu-Jun walked back down the hall grabbed his backpack then entered the bunker closing the door and turned the wheel. Then pulled the levers above and below the wheel on the inside of the door, locking it. He sat on the floor next to Evie where she'd slid down the wall and sat staring but seeing nothing. Tears streamed down her cheeks and Yu-Jun wrapped his arm around her shoulders pulling her close. She leaned against him. They were both exhausted mentally and the pains they'd been ignoring began to make themselves known.

Yu-Jun looked around, taking in the room. An oversized worn sofa sat in the middle of the floor with a few throw pillows on it, a low table in front of it, on the back wall to the right was a doorway without a door, on the same wall to the left side was a closed door. The left wall was lined with shelves that contained bottles of water and boxes of other various things. The rest of the room was bare.

"Let me move you to the sofa." Yu-Jun started to get up.

Evie thought of the pain on his face and the grunting when he tried opening the door. "I think you've carried me enough for today." She didn't take his hand.

He sighed. "What are you gonna do, crawl?"

Evie scrunched her face, "that would hurt. I can hop."

He made a face at her as if to say "really", pronouncing his dimple, "and hopping won't hurt? Don't you trust me?"

There was that phrase again. She gave him a dead stare, "Manipulator."

He grinned and stooped down, scooping her up and grabbing the backpack. He lowered her onto the sofa and she got a flash of the dream she'd had in-flight and felt her face turn red and heat up. Luckily Yu-Jun didn't seem to notice. He was busy opening the backpack and pulling something out. It was an ankle brace.

"Like I said, stabilizing it will help the pain, and I got some antibiotics in case it's broken, and pain meds 'cause, yeah." As he carefully put the brace on her she started looking him over realizing the cut above his eye wasn't as bad as it looked. She recalled hearing somewhere that facial wounds often seemed worse than they were because they bled a lot even when they weren't serious. Her eyes started traveling to his hands on her foot when she caught something she'd missed before. His sweater was soaked in blood and ripped over his rib cage on his right side.

Her heart lodged itself in her throat, "Oh my God."

He saw the panic in her face and looked down. "Hmm?"

She glowered at him. "Take off your clothes."

He raised an eyebrow and she immediately turned red.

"I- I mean y- your sweater and shirt. I want to check your side."

Yu-Jun smiled, his dimples showing. He knew what she meant but she was adorable when she blushed. He tilted his head. "It's not bad. I'll be okay."

"Please." Evie said.

She looked ready to cry and he didn't want to be the reason for that so he gently lifted his shirt and sweater. Evie leaned forward trying to get a better look.

"There's bandages in the bag." He pointed to the backpack leaning back against the sofa.

Evie grabbed the bag and stood on her knees. She was on the wrong side of him and couldn't stand to get on the other side so without thinking much she straddled his lap moving to the other side of him. Yu-Jun's breath left him as she crossed his lap and he let his head fall back to hide his face.

Evie sat on her knees, on the other side of him, her feet hanging off the sofa and she gingerly cleaned his side, blowing it lightly, after spraying the disinfectant. The glass from the cab must have shredded this side though it seemed most of it was protected by his sweater there were a few gashes. She didn't see any glass so she put bandages on and tugged his shirt back down then crawled back to the other side.

Yu-Jun felt an ache in his thighs and curled his hands into tight fists resisting the urge to touch her as she went. He grabbed one of the pillows next to him hugging it and kept his head back staring at the ceiling as he waited for the feeling to pass and felt her lean against his side. He looked down at her and she whispered. "Is this okay?" He felt a different ache then and she looked up. He nodded and put an arm around her, the pillow falling to his lap. Yu-Jun's eyes closed.

Evie crawled onto his lap placing one knee on each side of him as she faced him and leaned forward kissing him soft and slow. Yu-Jun's hands slid up her thighs to her waist holding her, the ache in his thighs coming back. As her kisses became more urgent, so did his ache. His hands slid up her sides pulling her shirt up with it and she sat back pulling it off and over her head. His kisses trailed down her neck and a soft moan escaped her lips as his kisses lined her chest. She began to rock slowly on his lap.

A gasp came from beside them and Yu-Jun woke up to see Evie trying to stand. He was glad the pillow still lay in his lap. "What are you doing?" He asked, trying to act casual.
