Chaos
After walking around the terminal shops a bit Evie headed outside toward the line of taxi-cabs. As she walked up to one of the cabs her phone rang and she held up a finger to the cab driver as she answered. "Hello." The voice coming through was garbled and full of static but she knew it was her sister. "What's wrong with your phone?" She tried asking.
Yu-Jun pulled his suitcase along behind him. As he walked up to the line of cabs and there she was again. Fate was giving him another chance, he could offer to share a cab with her. Then he would actually have the chance to tell her how much he admired what she did.
"Lady-" The cab driver started.
Suddenly the volume of voices went from a low hum to a loud buzz and Evie still couldn't make out what the voice on the phone was saying. Then there was an explosion on the freeway across from the airport parking lot. Evie ducked and turned her attention toward the ruckus as several people screamed. The chaos spread as another explosion went off and fighter jets soared overhead.
What the hell- She shoved her phone in her pocket as the line went dead and people started shoving and shouting. She looked around trying to figure out what was going on when suddenly she was thrown to the ground with a firm body on top of her and gentle hands under her head. She looked up to see a motorcycle without a rider fly over the shoulder of the one that saved her. She knew that scent. Yu-Jun lifted his head. "Are you alright?"
She nodded too stunned to speak.
He stood and pulled her swiftly to her feet, "Sorry about that- and this," he shoved her into the cab putting his hand on her head so she didn't bump it, "but I think we should get out of here." She crawled across the seat, her overhead bag forgotten on the sidewalk. He climbed in right behind her, yanking off the backpack he'd been wearing and slammed the door behind him.
"GO!" Evie shouted at the driver hitting the back of his seat, breaking him from his stupor. He pulled into the lane weaving around people and traffic.
"Where are we going?!" The cabbie swerved nervously.
"Anywhere but here! Get away from the jets!" Evie shouted over the noise.
"They're everywhere!" The cabbie flashed her a panicked look through the rearview mirror.
Another one screamed overhead and all three of them ducked inside the cab explosions seeming near and far at the same time, dropping here and there throughout the city.
Evie looked around wide-eyed as her brain tried to process and think at the same time. "Head downtown for the old courthouse!" She shouted over the din.
Both the driver and Yu-Jun gave her a look as if she'd lost her mind though neither said a word and the driver followed orders.
As the cab flew along the streets as fast as it could Evie pulled out her phone again and dialed her sister. There was only a busy tone. She pulled it away from her ear as the cab swerved around a corner and as she slammed against the door on her side she lost her grip on her phone. "Fuck." She mumbled as she watched her phone sail out the open window, her hand trailing just behind it, a millimeter too slow and a split second too late.
TA-TA-TA-TA-TA!!!
The cab tires screeched as the driver narrowly avoided the street he was just about to turn down. Evie grabbed Yu-Jun's arm, yanking him down toward the seat, laying over him as she saw where the rapid fire sound was coming from. It was actual rapid fire, from a man standing in the street with a gun firing it off in every direction. The move cost the driver control of the car, he nicked a fire hydrant causing it to spray across the car and street. Evie and Yu-Jun started to sit up peeking out of the window cautiously. The cab began to fishtail wildly. A truck coming from the opposite direction veered to the right just as the back end of the cab swung out toward the side that the truck driving on.
For Evie it was as though time slowed and she could see what was about to happen. She sat up fully sliding back against her door grabbing Yu-Jun's arm tighter, pulling him with her, away from his door just as the front corner of the truck smashed into it forcing the tail end of the cab back the other way. The glass shattered and Yu-Jun raised his other arm over his face yelling out in surprise. Evie and Yu-Jun sat in the back locked onto each other, her hand gripping his forearm and his gripping hers. The world seemed to speed back up as the car slid toward a lamp post the sound drowning to near mute as fear filled Evie's gut. The only thing she could hear was her heart pounding in her chest even though she knew she screamed.
The driver smashed into the post crunching the front of the cab nearly to the windshield on the left side. Evie was quick but not quick enough. She had tried pulling her feet onto the seat as they headed for the post but one of her ankles was now trapped between the driver's seat and the back seat. As her hearing returned to normal Evie could hear a quiet, gurgling, raspy breath and then it stopped. She knew the driver didn't make it. She couldn't look and didn't have to check to be sure.
"My foot-" she looked to Yu-Jun, "you have to get out of here."
"We will."
Had he misheard her, she wasn't going anywhere. She looked up at him, from just above his right eye, just under his eyebrow and down his face was covered in blood, it looked bad. "I can't-"
He cut her off, "I said we." He swiveled around scooting right up against her, placing his feet on the back of the driver's seat. "When I say, you pull."
She looked into his eyes and saw a fire there. He was determined not to leave her behind and she didn't want to stay behind but she feared what might happen to both of them if she couldn't get free. She grabbed the leg of her pants with both hands and gritted her teeth giving him a single reassuring nod, then placed her forehead on his shoulder.
Planting his hands firmly on their seat he gave a grunt and pushed with all he had on the back of the front seat with his feet. "Now!"
Evie was already pulling as she felt the pressure ease off her ankle slightly. She yanked it free with a yelp into his shoulder, she lost her shoe in the process. They both relaxed for just a second before they heard the screaming.
The screaming came from a woman running down the street away from them, she was on fire. A guy with a flamethrower was running behind her laughing like a maniac.
