Ch. 9: The Date (part 1)
Hinata's POV:
"... would-would you like to go on a date with me?"
My eyes went wide, my mouth fell open, and my heart felt like it had stopped while simultaneously beating a thousand miles an hour.
A date?
I started looking around thinking he must be talking to someone else, when I saw there was no one else in the room I looked back up at him and pointed at myself as if to ask "who me?"
He laughed and said, "Yes you. Hinata Hyuga will you go out on a date with me?"
He said it again. Say yes you idiot! Say yes!
I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out so I just nodded slowly.
"Really? You mean it?" he asked and I nodded again. "That's awesome!" he pulled me into a big hug in his excitement. After a few seconds he released me and got himself under control. "So, um, I'll pick you up tomorrow at 5?" he asked and I just nodded.
Why are my words not working!
I walked out of the room and gave him a small wave and then I started walking down the hall. It felt like I was in a dream world and everything around me was hazy and moving in slow motion. Before I realized it, I was outside the front doors and that's when it hit me.
I HAVE A DATE WITH NARUTO UZUMAKI!!!!!
I squealed with joy and jumped up and down. I heard someone behind me chuckle and I abruptly stopped my little dance of excitement and my face turned a bright shade of red.
Oh please don't let that be who I think it is.
I slowly turned around, and sure enough, leaning against the door frame was a blonde headed boy wearing an amused grin.
Oh no he saw that. Wait why is he here? Oh no I bet he changed his mind and doesn't want to go out anymore. After seeing that little "performance" I can't say I blame him. Oh he's going to dump me before we even go out, I –
I would've kept panicking internally like that if he hadn't tapped me on the shoulder and brought me back to the land of the living.
I looked at him standing in front of me and then I looked at the ground and closed my eyes waiting for him to say it was all a joke or something. I heard him take a breath and prepare to speak and my heart started racing.
Here it comes.
"You forgot your phone," he said.
My eyes shot open and I looked to the outstretched hand that was holding my phone. Then I looked up at his beautiful smiling face.
"S-so y-you d-didn't c-come t-to c-cancel our d-date?" I asked, accidentally vocalizing my thoughts.
He gave me a funny look and laughed a little, "No. No I did not come to cancel our date. Why on earth would I do that?" he said.
I looked away to try and hide my embarrassment for thinking such a ridiculous idea.
"N-no r-reason," I said softly. "Th-thank you f-for b-bringing m-me my phone Naruto-kun," I said as I took the device from him and put it in my back pack.
"I'll see you tomorrow Hinata-chan... 5 o'clock, don't forget," he said giving me a big smile. Then he kissed my forehead and quickly walked back inside.
I stood there in shock at what he had just done for a few moments. I quickly recovered from the shock and proceeded to sprint all the way home, and I didn't stop until I got to my room and slammed the door shut behind me. I jumped onto my bed and squealed with joy into a pillow. I then laid on my back staring at the ceiling, smiling like a lunatic and touching the spot where his lips touched my forehead. The spot seemed to tingle with electricity whenever I closed my eyes and replayed what happened. Suddenly my heart stopped when I came upon a terrifying realization.
WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR???
I jumped out of my bed and started tearing apart my closet like a miniature tornado of anxiety.
No. No. Definitely not. Dumb. Gross. Ooh that's not bad.... Nope. Nuh uh. No. What even is this?
(A/N: in the next line think the scene from the Grinch.)
"Ugh, if I can't find something nice to wear I'M NOT GOING!" I said as I leaned against the wall and slid down until I was sitting with my knees pulled to my chest.
I was just about to text Naruto to cancel when I heard the front door open and close.
"Nee-chan I'm home!" my younger sister announced and I could almost feel the light bulb light up over my head, as a wicked smile crept up my face.
Perfect timing.
Why was I so excited you ask? Well it just so happens that my younger sister has turned out to be quite the little fashionista. She was even better than Ino in my opinion.
"Hanabi-chan could you come up here please," I called from my room.
When she came up I closed the door behind her and I told her about everything that had happened today and she happily agreed to help. A half hour later my outfit was all laid out and my schedule for tomorrow was all worked out.
Once everything was finished and all my clothes had been put back into the closet and drawers, I changed into my pj's and went to bed with a smile on my face.
Tomorrow's going to be the best day ever.
Naruto's POV:
She said yes! She said yes! Oh I can't believe it, this is awesome!
After I brought Hinata her phone, which I had purposefully hid so I could have an excuse to see her reaction, I went back to my room and punched the air repeatedly with excitement. When suddenly I felt a pop.
Ow... guess I'm not as healed as I thought. Can't let Hinata know that though. If she finds out I'm still hurt she'll try to cancel the date. Better just ice it and take some pain meds before I go.
I already knew what I was going to wear and where I was going to take her so the only thing I had to do was call Sasuke and make sure he was going to be here tomorrow to pick me up and take me home the second I was allowed to leave. After I called him and made sure he'd be here I laid down with a smile on my face and wished for tomorrow to get here faster.
Tomorrow's going to be the best day ever.
-The next day-
I was checked out of the hospital and back in my apartment by 12:30. The first thing I did was eat. I hadn't had ramen in a week so today I was going to break out the "expensive" stuff. After I ate I threw on some basketball shorts and a plain t-shirt, and went to my closet to set out what I was going to wear. I grabbed a pair of dark-wash Lucky brand blue jeans that were faded on the knees, my black Airmax's, a plain black V-neck short sleeve t-shirt underneath a casual faded-orange button up long-sleeve with the sleeves rolled up over my elbow. I also had my crystal necklace, a silver & black watch, and my letterman's jacket just in case it got chilly later on.
Once that was taken care of I sat down on the couch and watched TV until it was time to start getting ready.
When I sat down on the couch and turned on the TV, it was 1:15. I had only been sitting down for five minutes when I realized something.
"Crap! I don't have a car!" I shouted into the universe.
I jumped off the couch and ran over to my phone and dialed the only person I knew who could help.
I put the phone to my ear and paced back and forth through the living room while it rang.
Ring... Ring... Ring...
"Come on, pick up, pick up, pick up..."
Ring... Ring... Ring...
"Come on pick up dammit!"
Ring... Ring... Ring...
"Dammit pick u- hello? Hey! Yeah it's me who else. Listen I kind of have a date tonight, but as you know my car is............ yes it's with a girl but............. No you don't know her......... ok just listen! My car is totally out of commission for the next few months ya know, and I really need to borrow your car just for tonight?...............................really?.... thanks you're the best! I owe you one........... ok, I'm picking her up at 5 so try to be here at like 4, sound good?........ Ok great, see you at 4."
I hung up and went back to watching TV.
At a quarter to 3 I jumped in shower and washed everything thoroughly. Normally I only washed the necessities and I let the run-off take care of everything else and I was in and out in no more than ten minutes. But since today was special, I scrubbed everything and by the time I was done, I had been in for a half an hour.
After I got out of the shower I put on some deodorant and shaved the stubble that had formed over the last week and then I brushed my teeth... twice, and then just for good measure I clipped my finger and toe nails. When I was all dry I looked at the clock and saw it was 3:30. I put my pants on but I put on a different shirt then I was going to wear on the date. I didn't want to give my clothes a chance to absorb any bad smells that could develop between now and when I picked up Hinata, so I would wear this shirt until I got to her house and then before I went to her door I would change into my actual clothes.
I heard a knock at my door and went to answer it.
"Hey, thanks for doing this it means a lot, I promise I'll take good care of her."
Hinata's POV:
I couldn't sleep at all last night because of how excited I was for tonight, so when my alarm went off started to go off, I muted it before it even finished its first cycle. I went down to make breakfast for myself and my family and when I was done eating I ran upstairs to take a shower and shaved my arms and legs. When I was satisfied I hadn't missed anything I dried off and brushed my teeth. After that I sat down at my vanity and let Hanabi do her thing.
A few hours later I was dressed and looking at myself in the mirror. Hanabi decided to leave my hair straight like usual, she painted my nails lavender, and my make-up wasn't anything special; some mascara that made eyes look even bigger than they already are, and some watermelon-flavored lip gloss that made my lips shine a little. As far as the outfit was concerned, I was wearing a violet short-sleeved V-neck that somewhat hugged my curves, a black skirt that went down to just above my knees, a light gray cardigan, purple converse, and a light gray knitted beanie.
Hanabi should make a career out of this. It's perfect; simple yet attractive.
I looked at the clock and saw it was a quarter to 5.
I'd better go down there and wait so no one else answers the door.
I went down stairs and waited... and waited... and waited some more... I looked at the clock again and saw it was now 5:30.
I knew it. It was just a stupid prank. Why would I ever think for a second a guy like him would want to guy out with a girl like-
I was about to break into tears when I heard a knock at the door. I walked over and looked through the peak hole and I saw him standing there with his back to the door.
He's here! He's here! Oh thank Kami that was a little too close for comfort.
My heart was racing as I turned the handle to open the door.
Ok Hinata, this is it.
I took a deep breath and opened the door. When he turned to look at me, my heart fluttered at how handsome he looked and it felt like everything was moving in slow motion and I was able to take in every detail about him in a matter of seconds. The sleeves of his faded orange button up were rolled up above his elbows to show off his muscular forearms and the top three buttons of the shirt were left open to reveal the black V-neck shirt underneath along with his crystal necklace that he always wore. He also had on dark-washed blue jeans that were faded at the knees and accented his rear quite nicely. His golden hair was in its usual disarray and his sparkling eyes somehow seemed even bluer than they normal. On top of how he looked, he smelled like a forest with a hint of orange.
Wow. He cleans up really well.
When he saw me he looked about as stunned as I felt. He cleared his throat before.
"Um, here, these are for you," he said with a slight blush as he handed me small bouquet of daffodils and a box of... cinnamon rolls!
I understand how he knew about the cinnamon rolls but how did he know I loved daffodils?
I blushed and smiled as I took the flowers and sweets from him. I placed the cinnamon rolls on the bench by the stairs and I put the flowers in an empty vase just inside the door. I took one of flowers with me so I could smell it.
"Th-thank you Naruto-kun, that's v-very sweet of you," I said with a smile as we continued to stand on the porch.
"Sorry for being so late, by the way, I was on my way here when I thought I should bring you something so I went and bought those," he said gesturing to the flower I was holding in my hand. "So you like them?" he asked nervously.
"Y-yes I love them, they're beautiful Naruto-kun," I said with big smile and nodded quickly, "b-but what I can't figure out is h-how you knew that I loved daffodils?" I asked.
"Well the last time I dropped you off I noticed that in one of the upstairs windows is a window box full of them so I figured it was a decent guess ya know," he answered nervously.
Kami, he's almost as nervous as I am.
"Well you guessed v-very well, I love them. But you d-didn't have to bring me anything," I said with a shy smile.
"I know, but I wanted to.... Besides a girl as amazing as you should get flowers every day," he tried to whisper the last part but I still heard it and I blushed like crazy when I did.
"Thank y-you Naruto-kun.... Should we get going," I said, knowing I'd probably faint if he got any sweeter.
"Oh right, let's go," he said with a big smile as we walked down the path leading to the street.
I started to turn down the side walk towards town but he stopped me with his voice.
"Hinata-chan where are you going?" he asked.
"Well I thought that since you d-don't have car that we were going to walk?" I answered a little confused.
"Who says I don't have a car?" he asked with a big smile and an excited twinkle in his eyes.
I was going to ask what he meant, but before I could he started to jog down the sidewalk going the other direction.
"Just wait here ok? I'll be right back," and then he turned around a corner and disappeared from sight.
What is he doing?
Suddenly I heard an engine roar to life and then it started to rumble like a thunder storm. The rumbling sound came closer until the front end of the car appeared around the corner and started coming towards me.
Kami... it's beautiful.
When it was sitting in front of me I could literally feel the sound waves coming from the engine, vibrating through me. When Naruto put it in park, he turned it off and got out with the biggest smile on his face I've ever seen.
"So what do you think? She's beautiful isn't she?" he asked as we both sat admiring her.
"N-Naruto-kun, who's car is this?" I asked wide eyed.
"She belongs to a family member, but he let me borrow her for tonight," he said.
"What kind of c-car is it?" I asked.
"Well first of all, she is a "she", not an "it", and secondly she is a 1967 Chevy Impala 4-door automatic," he answered.
"Wow," was all I could say.
"Yeah, anyways we should get going ya know," he said as he ran around to the passenger side so he could open my door for me.
After I slid onto the black leather bench seat, he closed the door behind me and slid along the hood, Dukes of Hazzard style, and then got in himself. We got buckled and he fired up the motor and we were on our way.
