Ch. 12: Live-in Boyfriend
Third Person POV:
After Hinata and Naruto sang their duet, everybody else took a turn. Once everyone had gone, it was time for them to go home and get ready for school tomorrow. Naruto walked Hinata home and kissed her goodnight before returning home and falling asleep.
Naruto's POV:
"Help.... Dobe HELP!" Sasuke growled.
I looked down to see my friend about to be crushed from the weight he was lifting and remembered I was supposed to be spotting him.
Oh shit!
I quickly grabbed the bar and hauled it up onto the rack.
"My bad Sasuke, I just thought you were strong enough to get it up on your own. Guess I was wrong," I joked trying to pretend I hadn't been day dreaming.
"Bullshit," my friend said. "You've been spaced out all day and you never came down from the roof during lunch. So what is it that's got the great Naruto Uzumaki so worried?" he asked, seeing right through me.
Shit he's using full sentences, he's not going to let me brush this off.
"Hinata and I are telling her father about our relationship today after school," I mumbled quiet enough so that only he could hear me.
"Oh shit," was his response.
Real helpful teme.
"Yeah," I said as I laid down on the bench and started lifting. Since I was doing rehab, I wasn't allowed to lift anything heavier than the bar, so I had to do extremely high reps which was super annoying.
"Well if he's anything like Neji –"
"Hina says he's worse," I interjected.
"Then yeah you're probably screwed," he said.
"Gee thanks, not like I hadn't already figured that out," I said throwing the bar onto the rack and sitting up. "What am I gonna do Sasuke?" I asked.
"You love her right?" he stated it as more of a fact than a question.
I nodded my answer.
"Then you'll just have to prove it to him. He's not going to be as easy to convince since he doesn't have a soft spot for Hinata like Neji does, so you're just going to have to do what you do best," he explained.
"Pfft, and what's that? Eat ramen?" I asked sarcastically.
"Be unpredictable," he said with a smirk.
"What do you mean?" I asked curiously.
"What I mean, every time someone expects you to fail, you succeed. Even if there's only a one percent chance for you to succeed, I will bet every time that you can do it. So what I'm telling you to do, is believe on that one percent, and I'm positive everything will turn out ok," he explained.
Wow, never thought Sasuke could be so nice... bet the words tasted like vinegar as they came out of his mouth.
"Thanks teme," I said with a grin.
"Hn," he smirked and I rolled my eyes.
And he's back.
I started walking towards the door to go to the gym so I could spend some time with Hinata.
"Don't mess it up," he said as I reached the door.
"I won't, believe it," I said and left the weight room.
I won't mess this up.
-Time skip-
"Father I'm home," Hinata said as we walked in through the front door. I took my shoes off and left them there.
"How was your – who are you?" Hiashi asked when he saw me over the top of the newspaper he was reading when we came in.
My heart felt like it was beating a thousand miles an hour and I couldn't believe that no one else could hear it but me.
"Father, this is –"
"Is he not capable of speaking for himself?" he asked, cutting Hinata off.
"I'm Naruto, sir. Naruto Uzumaki. It's an honor to meet you sir," I said giving a slight bow. "I'd offer to shake your hand sir, but I recently broke my arm and the damage has caused me to lose most of my grip. So I'm afraid that any attempt at shaking your hand would give a very poor first impression," I explained politely.
He just stared at me, or rather through me, with the same pale eyes Hinata has. Although instead of the warmth and kindness that hers possessed, his were cold and filled with disapproval.
He's even scarier than I thought... he looks like he's made of stone.
"I see, so you're the boy that Hinata's been tutoring the past few weeks," he said coldly.
"Yes sir, she's been a great help and a good friend," I said with a small smile.
"If that is all, Hinata you may take him to the study so you can both work on your homework," he said looking back at his newspaper.
"Actually father, there is something we'd like to talk to you about," Hinata said. I was amazed that she wasn't stuttering but when I looked at her I saw that her leg was shaking violently to make up for the amount of focus she was using to control her speech.
"Oh, and what is that?" he asked, not looking up from his paper.
Hinata was about to speak but I put my hand on her shoulder to stop her.
I have to be the one to do this.
"Sir, Hinata and I are dating, and we'd like to have your blessing of the relationship," I said as firmly and politely as possible.
I saw his fists tighten around the newspaper and his jaw clench.
This is it, this is how I die. Mom, Dad, looks like I'll be home for dinner.
"Why," he said suddenly.
"Sir?" I asked confused.
"Why should I bless this so called, relationship? Give me a reason that I should trust my daughter to you?" he said, his eyes staring into mine. They were ice cold, but they held back a destructive force like a tsunami, leaving nothing but ruin in its wake.
His gaze numbed all of my nerves and made me feel like I was in a nightmare.
"I can't," I had never ever spoken that phrase and doing it felt so wrong and foreign to me.
"Naruto-kun?" I heard Hinata whisper in shock and disbelief, her voice so quiet only I could hear it. I could tell she felt betrayed by what I had just said.
"I can't give you a reason to trust me. Trust is something that has to be earned, and I have done nothing to earn yours... so I'd like to have the opportunity to do so. Give me one week... one week of whatever you ask of me, to earn your trust," I spoke without even thinking about it.
He looked at me for what seemed like an eternity before finally speaking.
"Hinata, leave us," he said, still staring at me.
"But father –"
"It's ok Hinata, just do as he says, I'll be alright," I said giving her a smile.
She looked like she wanted to protest but she nodded and walked upstairs to what I assumed was her room. When we heard the door close, Hiashi spoke again.
"You will live here, in the guest house out back, for the next week. You will do chores and contribute to the household. I will be watching how you interact with my daughter. If at the end of the week, I see no reason to trust you, you will cut all ties with Hinata forever. Do you understand?" as he spoke, he had gotten up from his seat and walked so that he was standing a foot in front of me.
"Yes sir. I understand," I answered.
"Good. Go home and pack what you'll need for the next week, and take a shower before you return. You smell terrible," he said with disgust.
"Yes sir. May I borrow a bike sir?" I asked.
"What for?"
"Well my car is being repaired and I walked here. I am more than capable of walking home and walking back, but I don't want to keep you or Hinata waiting any longer than necessary," I explained.
"Fine, use Neji's. It's the black and white one in the garage," he said.
"Thank you sir, I will be back as soon as possible," I bowed and then went to the garage to grab Neji's bike.
I was halfway home when I realized I had forgotten to put my shoes back on.
An hour later, I returned to the Hyuga mansion that I would be staying at for the next week. I walked inside to find that everyone had already eaten dinner.
Luckily I packed some instant ramen.
Hinata showed me to the guest house out back. The ground floor had a small kitchenette, a living room area with two couches and a TV, and a laundry room. Upstairs were two bedrooms and a bathroom.
This place is bigger than my apartment!
I set my stuff down in one of the bedrooms and then walked back downstairs to make myself some instant ramen. After I had eaten I set my alarm and went to bed.
I can't mess this up.
Hinata's POV:
I sat up in my bed and looked at my phone to see what time it was.
Ugh how has it only been an hour!?
I got out of bed and walked to the window and looked out to the guest house.
I wonder if Naruto-kun is sleeping well... I guess I could go check on him.
I put on a sweatshirt and some sweat pants and opened my window. At my old house on nights like this when I couldn't sleep, I would sneak out my window and swing on our swing set until I got tired. And like this house, my room was on the second floor, so I had a rope handy that I would climb down to get outside. I grabbed the rope out from under my bed, tying one end to my bed post and tossed the other end out the window. I climbed down it and walked across the yard to the guest house.
It was unlocked, as expected, so I walked in and quietly closed the door behind me. I walked upstairs and knocked on the door that I guessed Naruto was in. When there was no answer I thought that maybe he was asleep, so I turned the handle to go in but the door flew open and I fell forward.
I was about to hit the floor when I felt strong arms wrap around me.
"Hina? What are you doing here?" Naruto asked as he helped me stand up.
"I c-couldn't sleep so I came to ch-check on you," I said blushing with embarrassment that he wasn't wearing a shirt.
"Oh ok, come on in, I guess," he said scratching the back of his head and trying to blink the sleep out of his eyes.
"N-no, I can see I woke you up, I'll just go b-back to bed, it's f-fine," I said, internally questioning why I even came out here.
He just stood and looked at me for a few moments before giving me a small smile and rolling his eyes at me.
What's that fo – oh he's picking me up!
He picked me up bridal style and carried me to the bed. He laid me down on the bed and then climbed in next to me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me close to his body.
"There, you comfy?" he asked, his warm breath tickling my ear.
"Y-yes, very," I said. True I was nervous about how we were situated but it felt so nice that I didn't care.
"Ok then, goodnight Hina-chan," he said and I could feel him smile.
"Good night Naruto-kun," I said smiling.
"Oh wait Hina, could you hand me my phone on the night stand? We'd better set an alarm so you can get back inside before anyone else wakes up," he said.
"G-good idea," I said and set his alarm an hour earlier than he had set it.
I put the phone back on the night stand and then closed my eyes and fell asleep. After a little while I felt a bit warm so I quietly moved Naruto's arms and got out of bed to take off my sweatshirt and sweatpants.
"H-Hina-chan..... What are you doing up, come back to bed," he said sitting up.
"S-sorry Naruto-kun, I got k-kinda hot so I was just taking off my sweatshirt and sweatpants," I said smiling at the memory of him saying those exact words the night he got in his car accident.
"Oh ok," he said and held his arms open for me.
I blushed that I was only wearing a baggy t-shirt and some running shorts, but I climbed into bed with him. This time I laid down, facing him. I laid my head on his chest and listened to the sound of his heart beating. I smiled as he pulled me closer to him and kissed the top of my head.
That was the best sleep I ever had.
-Time skip-
It's already Thursday, which means we only have three more days to get father to trust Naruto, and it doesn't seem like he's come any closer to liking Naruto, much less trust him. Ugh what are we going to do...
"Hinata? Hinata are you even listening to me?" Tenten asked, bringing me back to reality. She and I were sitting at the lunch table, waiting for everyone else to join us.
"Huh, w-what?" I unintelligibly said.
"Obviously not," she said rolling her eyes. "I asked how the whole thing with Naruto and your dad was going," she said.
"O-oh, it's h-hard to s-say since father doesn't really show m-much emotion. Every day he gives Naruto a task to d-do around the house, and he w-watches us like a h-hawk.... I d-don't know what to d-do Tenten, I c-can't lose him, I c-can't d-do it, I –" I started crying and she pulled me into a hug.
"It's alright, I promise everything will be ok," she said as she hugged me.
But how!?
I pulled myself together and wiped away a few tears when I heard footsteps behind me.
"Hina-chan," a voice said.
That's Naruto-kun's voice, but he eats lunch on the roof.
I turned around and sure enough, there he was.
"Naruto-kun w-what are y –"
"Can you come with me? I want to show you something," he seemed nervous as he extended his hand towards me.
"O-ok sure," I said as I took his hand and he helped me up from my seat. After I was up, he let go of my hand and walked away with me following. We were soon on the roof.
Nice view.
He walked over to the edge and sat down with his legs dangling over the side. I walked over and saw him tracing something with his finger. I walked closer and saw the letters "MN + KU" carved into the bricks with a heart carved around it.
"Naruto-kun w-what is it y-you want to show me?" I asked.
"I'd like you to meet my parents," he said not looking up.
"W-what do you m-mean?" I asked confused.
"My dad's name was Minato Namikaze and my mom's name was Kushina Uzumaki..." he started.
MN + KU..... Those are his parent's initials carved on the brick.
"I found this one day when I just wanted to be alone. I asked Grandma Tsunade about it and she told me they would come up here and eat their lunch up here together sometimes. So every day I have lunch up here and talk to them," he said still not looking at me.
After a brief silence he looked at me and smiled, "So now I'd like you to meet them," he said proudly. I just nodded and smiled. He got up and took my hands in his.
"Mom, Dad, I'd like you to meet my girlfriend Hinata. She's really nice and smart and beautiful. She's a great cook, an unbelievable singer, and an awesome artist. I know you guys would really love her, ya know," he said and I started to cry again.
"I-it's a p-pleasure to m-meet you both. Your son is an amazing p-person, I can only imagine h-how great the two of you are," I said through tears and he pulled me into his arms.
"Mom, Dad, Hina and I are trying to get her father to accept our relationship and it doesn't seem to be going too well so we'd really appreciate it if you could give us a hand," he said and I smiled as the wind picked up and started to blow all around us like some kind of an answer.
"Hina, I promise you that everything is going to be ok," he said and I couldn't help but believe him. He took my chin in his hand and lifted up my face so that I was looking into his eyes. He smiled at me and then he leaned down and gave me a gentle but loving kiss.
The rest of the day was a blur.
-Time skip-
I was sleeping in Naruto's bed, which had become a routine for us since Monday, and I had a dream.
I was standing on the roof of the school, looking at the carved initials of Naruto's parents, when the wind suddenly picked up and a wall of leaves started swirling in front of me. When the leaves settled, a beautiful woman with long red hair and a kind face was standing in front of me.
"Kushina-san," I said.
She smiled as she stood in front of me.
I bowed my head and closed my eyes in respect.
"Thank you for giving him life," I said with my head still bowed and eyes still closed.
Suddenly I felt her hugging me, and she whispered in my ear.
"And thank you for loving him," she said in a sweet voice. "And just call me mom," her voice this time was more spirited and reminded me of Naruto.
I smiled in my sleep and a single tear fell from my eye.
Hiashi's POV:
I woke up earlier than normal so I tried to go back to sleep for a little while longer. After ten minutes I knew it wasn't going to happen so I got out of my bed and went down stairs to make my coffee.
I was sitting in the kitchen drinking my coffee when I started to hear something that sounded like music.
Who could be up at this hour?
I followed the sound of the music to the back patio door. I looked through the glass door to see the Uzumaki boy sitting in one of the lounge chairs with a ukulele in his hands.
What is he doing up this early?
I quietly opened the door to ask what he was doing when he started to strum a tune that stopped me in my tracks. Then he began to sing.
(A/N: Play song. Don't continue reading until song ends.)
I felt a single tear fall down my cheek. I wiped it away and spoke.
"Uzumaki," he turned around, shocked to see me standing there. "I assume you intend to someday marry Hinata?" I asked. I could see him blush a little bit, but he nodded all the same.
"Then you may date my daughter. Feel free to stay the weekend if you wish, but you are to move back home Sunday afternoon, understood?" I asked again all he did was nod.
"Good, I'll see you at breakfast," then I left.
Third Person POV:
Hiashi walked to his private study and locked the door behind him. He walked over to one of the shelves and pulled out a tape and then put it into the VCR.
He pressed play on the remote and a video of Hiashi dancing with his wife to the song Naruto had just played... it's the video of their first dance on their wedding night. Him and his wife are smiling at each other as they dance.
As he watches the video, Hiashi smiles and tears fall silently from his eyes.
"Be better than I was Naruto."
