11. Angry baby
A two-year-old Kunj woke up, his adorable obsidian eyes twinkling as he took in the sight of the beautifully decorated room, filled with an array of fluffy pillows.
Sitting up he let out a soft hmph, expecting his older brother Krishav to be by his side as he was every morning, but he was nowhere to be found.
Frowning, Kunj swung his tiny legs over the edge of the bed and carefully slid down, gripping the soft blanket with his small claws.
Determined to find his brother, he kicked his legs and made his way down the hallway, the maids observing him with affectionate eyes.
In the meantime, Prerna stood before the mirror, getting ready for the day. Her attention shifted when she heard the door creak open, and she couldn't help but smile at the sight of Kunj's cute little head popping out from behind it.
"Mumma!" he called out, rushing towards her with a beaming smile. Prerna quickly got down on her knees, arms wide open, ready to catch her precious son as he leaped into her embrace. Holding Kunj close to her chest, she kissed his forehead and greeted him, "Good morning, bacha."
"Mornin', mumma," Kunj mumbled, snuggling comfortably in Prerna's arms, his face adorned with an adorable pout.
Prerna chuckled, knowing exactly why Kunj had sought her out. He wanted her to ask what had upset him, so he could complain about it.
She understood what a drama king her son is. If she doesn't ask him now, then he's gonna sulk all day, saying no one loves him.
No matter what, Prerna’s wish for Kunj was that he would never change always freely and genuinely express his emotions without any hesitation.
Prerna had learned from her past mistakes with her elder son, and she was resolute in her determination to avoid making them again.
She wanted Kunj to always feel safe expressing himself, knowing that it was not a sign of weakness and hopefully Krishav would also understand the same thing soon. Bottling up emotions isn't something good, one day they would come out in the most unexpected way causing more than enough damage to many souls.
Prerna gently caressed Kunj's face, her fingertips gliding softly against his smooth skin, making the pout disappear. The faint scent of her perfume lingered in the air as she leaned in closer to him. "What got my little baby frowning in the morning?" Her voice was filled with warmth and concern.
"Bhaii," Kunj mumbled, his words barely audible as he snuggled against Prerna's neck. The sound of his soft voice mixed with the gentle rustle of fabric. He nuzzled his button nose against Prerna, seeking comfort as he complained about his brother.
"Bhai mean... didn't come to wake me up in the morning, didn't even cuddle me." Kunj's eyes, filled with sorrow and disappointment, fixated on Prerna as he voiced his grievances. His chubby fingers twisted the fabric of Prerna's saree, his touch conveying both frustration and longing.
Suppressing her smile, Prerna knew how Kunj would react if she laughed now. She lightly patted Kunj's head, feeling the slight bounce of his soft curls against her hand, as she sat with him in her lap. Gently turning his face towards her, she could feel the warmth of his body against her.
"It seems like Krishav made a big mistake. How come he didn't even apologize to my cutie pie after breaking his promise and now he didn't wake you up? That's not fair." Kunj nodded in agreement, his cheeks puffing up in indignation.
"What should we do now?" Prerna asked, her voice filled with understanding and anticipation. She knew that her little monkey must have concocted numerous plans in his tiny head to make his big brother suffer.
"Don't talk to bhai, and mumma scolds bhaii for breaking his promise to Kunj and also beat bhai." The mischievous glint in Kunj's eyes revealed his satisfaction in planning revenge. Prerna looked at the little devil, his grin showcasing a mix of innocence and mischief. She knew that when she would scold anyone, both brothers would stand in each other's defense, making her the villain.
"You sure, baby? You would let mumma scold your bhaii?" Prerna raised an eyebrow, a smile dancing on her face, as she challenged Kunj. He bashfully snuggled into her arms, nodding in affirmation.
"Yep, angry at bhaii, will scold him." Prerna laughed, the sound resonating through the room, as she scooped Kunj up in her arms.
"Okay, okay, we will scold your bhai later on, but first, let me get you ready for the day." With Kunj nestled against her, Prerna made her way to the bathroom.
Krishav woke up later than usual today, the sound of his alarm clock failing to rouse him from his slumber. Rubbing his face vigorously, he could feel the roughness of his hands against his tired skin. His bed hair was tousled, giving him a disheveled appearance.
As he glanced towards the left bedside, he expected to see his alarm clock, but it was missing. The absence of its familiar presence confirmed his suspicion of what might have happened. Leaning slightly, he looked down at the poor clock lying abandoned on the cold floor.
His eyes widened, the bright red digits on the alarm clock reflecting in his dilated pupils.
With a sense of urgency, he threw back the warm duvet, the rush of cool air causing goosebumps to rise on his skin. Ignoring the feeble ticking of the clock, he hurriedly made his way to Kunj's nursery, the sound of his hurried steps echoing through the hallway.
As he pushed open the door, the faint scent of baby powder and the softness of plush toys greeted his senses. He hoped to find Kunj peacefully slumbering in his bed, surrounded by a sea of fluffy pillows.
However, his smile faded as he approached the bed, his forehead creasing with worry lines. Instead of his little prince, there was an empty bed, the absence of his presence weighing heavily on Krishav's heart.
Over the years, it had become a cherished routine for Kunj to wake up to Krishav's gentle touch and soft voice.
Each morning, the first face Kunj saw would be that of his beloved brother. A sudden rush of sadness washed over Krishav as he realized he would have to work hard to earn Kunj's forgiveness. But first, he had to find him, so he could apologize.
Unaware of the gravity of the situation, Krishav made his way to Prerna's room, where he knew he would likely find Kunj nestled in their mother's embrace.
As he entered, his eyes immediately landed on the tender scene before him. The sound of laughter filled the room as Prerna and Kunj played with colorful Lego blocks.
Little Kunj's hands skillfully built a tower, guided by his mother's gentle guidance. Krishav approached them cautiously, his eyes silently pleading with Prerna not to reveal his presence to Kunj.
Settling down next to his little brother, he observed him intently, the soft touch of Prerna's hand on his shoulder providing a comforting sensation.
"Kannu," Krishav whispered softly, causing Kunj to startle and the tower to crumble in an instant. The sound of the falling blocks startled Kunj, his heart breaking as tears welled up in his eyes.
He turned to look at his brother, his gaze filled with disappointment, while Krishav's face was etched with guilt.
Puffing up his face, Kunj looked at Krishav with tear-filled eyes, his cheeks reddening as he clenched the Lego piece tightly in his hand.
The sound of sniffles filled the air, and Kunj's nose turned pink from the effort.
Seeing the glistening tears in Kunj's eyes, Krishav felt an infinite wave of regret wash over him.
Without hesitation, he pulled Kunj into a warm embrace, feeling the softness of their bodies pressed together. "I'm sorry, bacha," Krishav whispered, his voice filled with remorse.
"I didn't mean to hurt you. I just wanted to surprise you. Let's build an even bigger tower together, I promise. Please don't cry, Kannu." Kunj remained silent, his sniffles muffled against Krishav's chest.
But soon, he began to squirm in Krishav's arms, causing him to release the hug.
In a surprising move, Kunj rushed into Prerna's waiting embrace, startling both Krishav and Prerna. Prerna enveloped Kunj in her arms, feeling his small body tremble against her.
He buried his face in her midriff, refusing to meet Krishav's gaze. A deep shock and worry washed over Prerna as she realized the depth of Kunj's anger towards Krishav. He had made it clear through his actions that forgiveness would not come easily.
Krishav stared at Kunj, completely shocked. It was the first time Kunj had refused to speak or even look at him. Both Krishav and Prerna knew their little bean's intensity of anger and understood that their stubborn kiddo would make Krishav grovel for forgiveness.
Determined, Krishav vowed to coax Kunj into forgiving him, no matter what it took.
