Resting my fingers on the keyboard, I wait for inspiration to hit me. I've been waiting all day for this inspiration to come and with only a few hours left to finish this project, I'm getting ready to hit the panic button. Cold air sneaks through the opening in my blanket, and I allow the silence to take over as I stare off into space.

The mailbox creaks open, then squeaks shut as I look at the time. Stumbling to my feet, I slip and slide across the floor in my fuzzy socks until I reach the door and open it, letting the biting cold inside. I drop the blanket off my shoulders and start down the outside stairs, avoiding leaves as I go. The staircase creaks as I go, rickety all the way to the mailboxes.

I open the small door with my address on the side and pull out the mail.

Taxes. Junk mail. Strange blue...envelope.

Looking on the back of the odd envelope, I see my address and an unknown sender's address. Who could it be from? I start to tear it open, but then stop. What if this is for my mom? Who would send my mom a letter? My stomach twists as I finish tearing open the letter.

Pulling out the card, it has balloons surrounding the words 'Happy Birthday!' all over it. Flipping open the card, I find a five-dollar-bill that slides out. Only one person would send a birthday card not on my birthday with money in it. Looking down past the usual happy birthday greeting, I read over the signature that reads 'From Jason Marson'. My dad.

I sigh, replacing the card before leaning down and picking the money off the ground and placing it back in the envelope. As I do, I notice a piece of folded paper still in the bottom of the envelope. Another letter? Reaching inside, I pull it out and read over it.

Dear Evan,

Me and my family have moved back into town. We would love to have you over sometime for dinner. Can't wait to talk again.

 My stomach sinks as I put the note back, knotting as I trudge back up the creaking staircase.
