10

She wore a wine red coloured, custom-made full-length, satin gown. Sleek belt embellished with white pearls and rhinestones, cinched right above her waist, emphasizing her curves. The dress was tailored with an off-shoulder, short sleeves that flaunted her highlighted collarbone. Her hair was curled and styled into a low bun adorned with a few sparkling rhinestones. A few loose curls at the front framed her face. With the subtle smokey eye look and bold lip color, she had the perfect amount of makeup to sharpen her features. She wore an elegant pearl earring and a thin bracelet that matched with the outfit. She looked perfectly sophisticated and elegant.

Ashwin was stunned to see her in that attire. He just could not take his eyes off her, not just because he was smitten by her beauty, but because he missed witnessing all this next to her all these years. He saw a bold and beautiful young lady in front of his eyes. She seemed to have a serious discussion with Prathima and Roovfa before she walked up to the stage.

His scanning eyes caught sight of something. He spotted her wearing her comfy sneaker that peaked from under her dress while she lifted it slightly to walk up the stairs to the dais. It immediately made him chuckle thinking 'how more cute can she be?', Now, that is Sivaangi like, she has not changed over these years, at least when it comes to comfortable dressing. Comfort over fashion has always been her choice. He bit his lower lip trying to avoid giggling and turned away his gaze to keep away his expressive eyes from being caught by her.

She paused for a brief second to check if he was looking at her when he just looked away from her goofy sneakers for that polished attire she wore. She caught him with an impish smile on his face looking at the table next to his couch trying to distract himself. She narrowed her eye not sure if that expression was by seeing her footwear.

She walked closer to where he was seated and made herself comfortable on the host couch. He was styled in a steampunk low high, double-breasted jacket in red and black gothic colour blocks, accessories with antique buttons. It was tailored with full sleeves and a tuxedo collar with peak lapels. He wore a closed-neck black t-shirt under his quirky jacket and paired it with a formal slim fit, solid black trousers, and black designer loafers. She noticed him from the corner of her eyes while she pretended to adjust her curls and read through her cue cards wondering how he could casually carry any style. He caught her sighting him and cleared his throat which made her sheepishly strike a needless conversation with the set assistant next to her.

Somehow their outfits synced unplanned and gave a regal king and queen at the ballroom, transported from a different era.

"Sir unga dress super ah iruku" her assistant made a comment at Ashwin's outfit.

(Your dress looks good)

"Thanks Radhika" He said and turned his eyes to Sivaangi and struck eye contact with her for the first time since she stepped onto the stage. This was the second time their eyes met, first being the staircase incident. His eyes demanded reassurance from her. It made some unexplainable feel within her as if she has met such a charmer for the first time. She broke their eye contact and took a deep breath as if to calm her fluttering heart. A smile crossed his face as though he received an answer for his unspoken question.

After the final checks, the lights were dimmed at the sets of Sing with Sivaangi to begin their most awaited unforeseeable interview.

"Lights, camera, rolling!" Roovfa set off the show with confidence that she had on Sivaangi. She prayed for a second for the show to happen smoothly before the clapboard clicked and the assistant announced the roll and segment number. Loud intro music of the show was played when the intensity of the set lights increased and the camera focused on the host and the guest.

"Such a stunner she is!" He thought to himself, not very sure if it was the lights on her or her aura that reflected on her face and invaded his delicate heart for the millionth time in the last few minutes alone.

"Hello makkaley! Welcome back to another interesting episode of Sing with Sivaangi. Iniki nama kuda irukura guest pathi solanum na young, smart and talented hero, first movie ey periya production banner la introduce agi, rendu back to back hit movies kuduthukaru and inum pala padam makkala entertain panna kuduthey iruka poraru. Neraya shortfilms, albums, aprom Vijay tv la pala serials panna aprom avaru life la oru turning point kudutha show cook with comali 2. He is the best example for the saying 'hard work pays off'. Yes makkaley inniki nama kuda irukuradhu none other than the dashing, dapper hero Ashwin Kumar." And she clapped her baby hands to introduce him when the lights were thrown on Ashwin while the camera panned at him.

("Hello Guys! Welcome back to another interesting episode of Sing with Sivaangi. Today we have with us a young, smart, and talented hero, whose first movie itself was ventured by a big production house, and he has given us 2 back-to-back hit movies and not just that there is more to come in the near future to entertain his huge fan base. He started his career from scratch and faced all the struggles head-on and has reached where he belongs. He stands as a role model for the young upcoming heroes. After many shortfilms, albums, serials in Vijay TV, Cook with Comali 2 had been a turning point in his career. He is the best example for the saying 'hard work pays off'. Yes, today we have with us none other than the dashing, dapper hero Ashwin Kumar." And she clapped her baby hands to introduce him when the lights were thrown on Ashwin while the camera panned at him.)

Sivaangi was on fire when it started. She had prepared her mind so well that she should not choke or even express a faint sign of low confidence. It was so hard for her to surf about him on the internet and all social media platforms to prepare for the interview. She struggled to script an introduction for him. Usually, her introductions are rendered from her heart, she speaks what comes to her mind about her guest, and it has always been that way. For the first time, she had to put effort to construct an introduction for her guest.

He did not expect her to be so effortless. But he also knew she was keeping it very professional. If it was his old Sivaangi she would have hyped him a thousand times more than what she just did for all that he had achieved till now. There would have been a sparkle in her eye when she spoke about him. It was all missing and he felt terrible. It seemed like she didn't even know half of the things happening in his life. Of course, why would she want to know anything about him if it is going to hurt her more and bring back the dark memory which was not just a mere misunderstanding?

"Thank you!" He said with a simple smile on his face. Not the kind of smile when she is around. Not the one that roots from his heart, reaches his lip, making his eyes small and emphasizes his dimples.

"Epdi irukinga Ashwin? How is it coming back home?" She clicked her tongue realizing what she said and continued without a pause "......adhavadhu Vijay tv"

(How are you Ashwin? How is it coming back home?" She clicked her tongue realizing what she said and continued without a pause "......I mean Vijay tv")

She was behaving so differently to an extent that he doubted if it was the same Sivaangi who he met near the stairs just an hour ago. Obviously, she cannot be like that before the camera but there was not even a shadow of that version on her now.

"Romba nala irukeyn! And coming back home....." He chuckled softly and stared at the pattern on the floor searching for words to frame a sentence "It means a lot to me and I missed it all these years, romba miss panreyn inum, all those beautiful days and the amazing family I made here. Inga dhan elamey aramichidhu nu solalam. En career, en life, en dream elamey came true. It is always comforting coming back home". His pining eyes met her distant ones. In a fraction of a second, she drifted back to the day they met for the first time in the same place, which felt like it just happened yesterday.

("I'm doing great! And coming back home....." He chuckled softly and stared at the pattern on the floor searching for words to frame a sentence "It means a lot to me and I missed it all these years, I miss it even now, all those beautiful days and the amazing family I made here. This was the starting point of everything. My career, my life, my dream just everything came true. It is always comforting coming back home". His pining eyes met her distant ones. In a fraction of a second, she drifted back to the day they met for the first time in the same place, which felt like it just happened yesterday.)

Home, he was her home. There was a beautiful bond that had unexplainable emotions attached to it. She always felt at home when he was around and so did he feel. It was unbelievable for both that it was all only in the past and it just halted and stayed there forever. But those daunting words and actions were enough to destroy the home, the place she had in her heart for him.

"Unga career starting point la irundhu varalam. Cooku with comali how important was it for you?"

("Lets start from the beginning of your career.Cooku with comali how important was it for you?")

"Life before cook with comali and after cook with comali nu pirikalam. Indha show moolama I will reach people and they will celebrate me nu na 1% kuda edhir pakala. I came here with zero expectation. Elamey try panni idhuku mela panna onumey ila nu oru stage la failure ah dhan irundheyn. Ethanayo vati I had given up and gone back home. But something got me back to this place like it's where I belong. I never wanted to be a bad example adhu onu matum en mind la epoyum irundhutey irukum. Apdi oru vati na thirumbi porapo dhan I got a call from the team of CWC. Inga na irukeyn na adhuku mukkiya karanam adhu dhan andha oru phone call and my people and their constant support. I am blessed with positive people around me. Indha show and adhuku aprom nadandhadhu elamey simple ah solla pona MAGIC!" She relived the moment with him in her secret world. She remembered the day and the excitement she had when the team called him contrasting to the fear and pain in her seeing the same person after 3 years. The word MAGIC caught her attention and broke her chain of thoughts. She was clueless about how to continue and take it forward to the next question but thankfully he continued.

("My life can be split into two, before cook with comali and after cook with comali. I never expected this show would push me to this level. I came here with zero expectation and I never thought I would reach people and they will celebrate me. I had tried everything and at a point I had no directions, I felt like a failure. Many a time, I had given up and gone back home. But something got me back to this place like it's where I belong. I never wanted to be a bad example and I was clear about that. Exactly at that point in time when I was leaving Chennai, I got a call from the team of CWC. If I'm standing here today it is because of that one phone call and my people and their constant support. I am blessed with positive people around me. In simple words, this show and everything that happened after that is just pure MAGIC!" She relived the moment with him in her secret world. She remembered the day and the excitement she had when the team called him contrasting to the fear and pain in her seeing the same person after 3 years. The word MAGIC caught her attention and broke her chain of thoughts. She was clueless about how to continue and take it forward to the next question but thankfully he continued.

"It changed everything in my life. I found and lost many things here." His emotional yet intrepid words put a question on her face. She was not sure if she meant her but she dint want to know.

"Kandipa! You found your career path and I'm sure you are living your dreams to the fullest. You must have lost certain things for good" She made a brief halt before she continued "like negative energy and negative people and anything or anyone who might have possibly weighed your career down right?"

("Of course!")

'Did she just call herself a person who would weigh down my career?' He was blown by her indirect prick. She can never be his negative energy. He has longed for her touch of magic and it tore his heart seeing her sit like a hurt angel.

"Everything happens for good and I am happy to see your growth" She finished her deep sentence with a light note to avoid scrutinizing questions and looked down at her cue card.

'Happy to see your growth' He felt like those words didn't seem to have any life and it pinched his heart. It just escaped from her lips for formality's sake. She barely knew about his growth.

Any troublesome statement made by either of them is going to be the headline the next day. Both of them chose their words carefully and tried to subdue all the personal complications away at least for a few hours, after which she believed or rather pray they don't meet ever again.

"Tell us more about your first two movies. Finally stepping into your dream! How does it feel?"

"I am grateful for all the love shown by my people. My last 2 movies were a box office hit. Idhulam kanava irunduchu. Ipdi lam vazhkaila nadakuma nu engirukeyn. Na enga irundhu vandheyn enaku teriyum and ipo na nikura edathuku na evalo poradirukeyn teriyum. Indha edathula nikka thagudhi padithitey irupeyn kandipa. Two more movies are in post-production and releasing soon. Adhukum idhey madhiri makkal support irukum nambureyn." His eyes were enough to tell how blessed he felt but there was an absence of charm that only she noted.

("I am grateful for all the love shown by my people. My last 2 movies were a box office hit. It a only a dream come true for me. I have yearned for such things to happen in my life. I know what it took to come to this point in my life and I will always strive and keep myself equipped to hold this place. Two more movies are in post-production and releasing soon. I believe I would receive the same love for those too." His eyes were enough to tell how blessed he felt but there was an absence of charm that only she noted. )

She could feel it only because deep down their souls were still connected even if she denies accepting it, that is the fact. But time changes everything. Time heals, it is a storm in which we get lost, it is a wonderful way of showing us what really matters. The time that can bring a person close to you can also pull them apart effortlessly.

"Kandipa avanga support epoyumey irukum."

("Definitely their support will always be there")

He raised his eyebrow asking if she would be there which she refused to take notice of.

" Romba seriousa pesitom nenaikureyn. Ipo oru fun session with a bunch of interesting questions"

("It went on quite serious I guess. Now let's get into a fun session with a bunch of interesting questions")

"Aiyaiyooo" There he goes with his all-time favorite expression with a slight blush and raising eye brows. He shifted in his seat as if getting prepared. He knew she would not trigger any controversy but he wanted to answer it very carefully paying full attention to not hurt her more by any means when she throws indirect questions at him.

"Okay first question.....Indha vishiyam unga vazhkaila tolanjey poga kudahu, apdina edhu? It can be any thing."

("Okay first question.....What is the thing that you don't want to lose in your life? It can be anything.")

He was dazed by just the first question. He knew the answer to the question but just dint know how to put it in words.

"Vazhkaila tolanju poga kudadha vishiyam na adhu namma kudavey irukura oru close person. They would mean the entire world to you but edho oru prechanai la you might lose them forever. That is the toughest thing to lose." He answered with his eyes fixed on her.

"A thing that I don't want to lose in my life is a person who stayed very close. They would mean the entire world to you but some cursed misunderstanding might make you lose them forever. That is the toughest thing to lose.")

She knew where this was leading and not wanting to interrogate more she quickly jumped to the next question.

"Seri Ipo unga kannu munadi kadavul vandhu nikuraru avaru kitta enna varam kepinga?"

("Okay....If god appeared in front of you and says he would grant you anything you wish for. What would you ask?")

"Varam ahh, neraya irukey"

(A wish! I have too many to ask)

"Adhula first sollunga"

(Tell the first one)

"Innum neraya padam pananum adhuku CWC time la nadandha magic, adhu adhoda nikkama apdiye continue aganum, kudavey irukanum nu kepeyn"

(I want to do a lot more movies and for that, I would wish for the magic that happened in CWC to continue and stay with me forever)

"En ninga dhan ipo enna lam wish panningalo nadakudhey idhuku aprom enna magic? I think you are your own magic now." Not giving him the space to explain she proceeded to the next question.

(You have got everything that you wished for and it's still happening, then what is the need for magic? I think you are your own magic now." Not giving him the space to explain she proceeded to the next question.)

"Ninga sonninga iliya before CWC and after CWC. Ipo ungala ningaley epdi pakuringa? and how do you think people around you, see you now?"

(You mentioned life before and after CWC. How do you think people around you, see you now?)

"Na charactera pona edathula herova poren. Anaiku iruka kuda room ila sonanga caravan ila sonanga. Inaiku enaku caravan iruku solranga. Sandhosama iruku. Indha growth continue aganum and enna thuki vechu kondada ithini peru irukurapo enaku enna kavala. Na enna epdi pakureyno terila ana avanga enna raja mari vechu pakranga."

(In the place where I had entered as a character artist, I am entering the same place as a hero now. Then, They said I was not given a room or a caravan but now, I have been given a separate caravan for myself. This growth should continue and when I have people to raise me to the moon why do I have to worry? I don't know how I look at my self but they treat me like a king)

After a few general questions about his released movie, she came to her last few questions to wind up the show. It went on well till now without any chaos. She dint touch personal questions, not that she dint want to know but the curiosity was 0%, nothing about him excited her anymore unlike how it was 3 years back. She would not have missed even a single post shared by him on Insta. It's not the same now.

Anyone following her show would think there was a new host because usually, her show would be fun-filled but this was more like a formal interview without her chirpiness and touch in it.

He also understood why she would not want to get there, and he was surprised how formal she kept it. Anything about his personal stuff, she knew he would not answer it clearly, then why ask? If that's how she wants to keep it so be it and he played accordingly, not showing any fondness to find his old Sivaangi at least before the camera.

For their fans, there was no Ashaangi, It was just Ashwin and Sivaangi now. She knew this would disturb their quiet fandom but she dint want to give any hope. If they think they have grown apart, then so be it. It is better than growing hopes and breaking their hearts later on.

"What next? What is brewing? Ninga ipo pudhu padam onu sign pannadha kelvi pattom. Adhu pathi edavadhu solalama? Is it still a secret project?"

(What next? What is brewing? We heard that you have signed for a new film. Can you share anything about that? Is it still a secret project?)

"Kandipa solalam. There could not be a better stage to share about my next film. "Enna solla pogirai" my next project peru. Inum shoot start pannala. I have signed for it, script keteyn it was very promising and na already work panna oru team, Trident Arts Ravindran sir production and directed by Hariharan, so I'm very happy to be a part of this project. Also unga annan Pugaz is part of the movie." Mentioning her brother's name brought a small smile to her face.

(Why not? There could not be a better stage to share about my next film. "Enna solla pogirai" my next project peru. Shoot has not started yet. I have signed for it, I heard the script, it was very promising and it's a team I had already worked with, Trident Arts Ravindran sir production and directed by Hariharan, so I'm very happy to be a part of this project. Also your brother Pugaz is part of the movie." Mentioning her brother's name brought a small smile to her face.)

"Title vechu patha it looks like a Love story. Apdidhana?"

(By the name of the movie it looks like a Love story. Is it so?

"Yes. It is a RomCom. The film will be a triangular love story on the lines of 'Minsara Kanavu' and "Unnaley unnaley'". This time he made a deeper eye contact wanting to convey something that he had realized very late.

She felt as if he was seeing through her soul and felt surprisingly uneasy. She wanted this 3 years back but now the same eyes only put her in a suffocating place.

"I could relate a lot with this script. Not just me, I guess that the audience will be able to relate to the story and the characters as well. It is not a typical rom-com template, it is scripted taking a different approach which would make it stand out. Even though this is a romantic film, there are so many layers to it. It added newness to the script and that's what made me sign the film. It will be a positive film that has a justification for every situation, and will not leave the characters hanging with an incomplete resolution. It has all the emotions expected from a story like this. It has comedy, love, romance, pain and everything, it's a package. Idhuku mela edhum ipodhiki sola mateyn." He completed with his mesmerizing chuckle.

(I cannot reveal anything more than this)

Triangle love and he could relate to it? How is that even possible? Does he know what she went through?

"Triangle love and you can relate? Enna solringa puriliyeeee ninga dhan single achey" She made a teasing interrogation for the first time in the whole interview, just curiously to know how he opens up after these many years.

(Triangle love and you can relate? what do you mean....Arnt you single?)

"Related na enaku nadakanum nu avasiyam iliye. En friends avanga love life apdi lam ketadhu pathadhu elam relate agum. I'm very much single"  He raised both his hands as if surrendering himself.

(By related it not necessarily means it happened to me right? It could be relatable to the people I see, my friends, their love story, and things like that. I'm very much single)

"Inumey dhan..." He mumbled under his breath which never caught her attention.

(only after this...)

"Adhaney patheyn! So typical of him, he has not changed and would never change when it comes to opening up!" She thought to herself.

(That what I wonder! So typical of him, he has not changed and would never change when it comes to opening up!)

But why would he open up his personal things in public? Wasnt it unfair if she expected him to open up when she herself kept everything to her heart even in front of him? For some reason she felt pissed off seeing him lie and why did she expect an answer?

"Thank you so much Ashwin for joining us! Melum melum neraya nalla movies kuduthu makkala entertain panitey irukanum adhuku vijay TV and elarudaya sarbaga vazhthukal."

(Thank you so much Ashwin for joining us! We wish you all luck on behalf of Vijay TV and everyone out there to sign more movies and keep entertaining your audience.)

"Thank you so much for inviting me. I had a great time Sivaangi. Unga new songs keteyn. Your voice has become more enthralling than ever before. Keep singing and keep entertaining. All the best!"

(Thank you so much for inviting me. I had a great time Sivaangi. I have heard your songs. Your voice has become more enthralling than ever before. Keep singing and keep entertaining. All the best!)

"Oh ninga en patu lam kepingala?"

(Oh you listen to my songs?)

He was taken aback, her question was like a slap on the face. He dint know how to react to that.

"How can she think I don't follow what she is doing?" he thought to himself baffled.

"Kandipa! Enna question idhu? Unga pala kodi fans la nanum oruthan!" He tried to make the uneasiness vanish.

(Of course! What kind of a question is this? I am one of the millions of fans of yours out there!)

"Ohhh okok! Ila ninga ipo periya hero ayitingaley idhulam kepingala nu nenachey but thank you!" She smirked after making a witty statement by the irritation created by him.

(Ohhh okok! Now that you have become a big hero I thought where would you find time to listen to my songs but thank you!)

But why was his lie still bothering her? Isn't she over him and has gone far away from him?

"Usually enoda show la na dhan oru patu padi sign off panuveyn but inniki for a change and even makkal asa apduvanga nenaikureyn. Can we hear you sing instead?"

(Usually, I sing and sign off the show but for a change can we hear you sing?)

He readily agreed as if waiting for a chance.

"Okay, before that I would like to dedicate this song to everyone and also to a special person. I believe it would reach that person and would understand what I want to convey. This is my personal favorite song that I love listening to."

The next moment, without any hesitation, he dived into the song.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes......

Idhayam Oru Kannadi Unadhu Bimbam Vizhunthathadi,
Idhuthan Un Sondham Idhayam Sonnathadi,
Kannadi Bimbam Katta Kayir Ondrum Illaiyadi,
Kannadi Oonchal Bimbam Adudhadi,

That the heart is a mirror and your image is the reflection.
I've expressed that the heart is yours.
To bind the reflection, there is no rope, dear one.
The reflection swings the swing of mirrors dear.

Nee Ondru Solladi Penne, Illai Nindru Kolladi Kanne,
Endhan Vazhkkaiye Undhan Vizhivilimbil Ennai,
Thurathathe Uyir Karaiyeradhe,

You tell me clearly, girl.
Else shoot and kill me, Laila.
Don't chase and hunt my life with your eyes.

With that, he opened his eyes to meet hers. Those intense eyes reflected the fear of not wanting to lose her again.

Illai Illai Solla Oru Kanam Podhum,
Illai Endru Sollai Thanghuvathendral,
Innum Innum Enakkor Jenmam Vendum,
Enna Solla Pogirai, Enna Solla Pogirai.....

It takes only a minute to say no.
I need a birth, again and again, to ask me to handle the word no.
What do you want me to do?

The intensity of the hurt that he was responsible for was seen in her eyes. The fear of breaking down made her not sing any song for him. That was what she spoke with Pratima and Roovfa before the interview. But she was not ready to hear him sing like that. He might have not reached the notes and pitch, on point but he reached her heart that was shattered into million pieces years ago. It only hurt her more and more with those lyrics penetrating into her wounds.

Where was his concern when he choose such a song to sing for her, when he intended to payed so much attention while answering a question in the interview?

The lights were faded and the interview ended right there with her heart heavy stirring her past.

She was not able to move. She just sat there staring at him as if she could still see it in the darkness that surrounded her.

He could feel her sinking and cursed himself for bringing up such a song. He felt like he has attacked her straight with the song instead of taking it slow.

"Good job guys!" Roovfa applauded and called for a pack-up when the lights were on.

She looked around with empty eyes and a worn-out smile. The next moment she stormed out of the place without a word. Ashwin had no other option but to run behind her. It might as well be his last ray of hope to apologize for what he has done. He wanted to talk to her, just hold her tight in his arms and cry out for his foolishness and ask her if she could be his magic, his lifeline, and just be there for him all over again.

How more selfish could he be? Was it just his words that hurt her? Isn't 3 years sufficient enough for him to realize she moved away from him not just because of his words but also because of Maha? She didn't want to intrude in their life anymore. He had chosen someone else. Why would she still stay and hurt herself?

"Sivaangi!" He yelped and ran behind her in the empty corridor.

She slammed the door behind her and quickly packed up her things. When she stepped out she saw him restlessly phasing in the passage. She ignored his presence and walked fast.

He saw her come out of her room and took long strides to catch up to her wanting to talk to her.

"Ma! Nillu ma please". Her heart skipped a beat and her feat slowed down. "Ma" This word can still make her knees wobble. His words surprisingly still had a scarce effect on her.

(Ma! Please stop!)

He stopped 2 feet behind her and heaved an audible sigh of relief with his hands on his hip exhausted.

"Enna thirumbi paka matiya ma?"

(won't you look at me?)

She didn't want to look into his eyes, but for his longing voice which made turn like a robot, like her heart was tuned to his instructions. Her eyes were flushed red and steaming. She puffed with anger and with her guards on not wanting to break down and flump in front of him. That would be the last thing she could imagine doing.

They stood there facing each other when a loud caller tune of his phone broke the silence. He pulled the phone out of his pocket to put it in silent.

Maha calling...

Ashwin scrunched his face for her untimely call and looked at Sivaangi.

The name displayed on the phone made tears brim in her eyes. Her heart sank and her brain was caught up with the bitter truth and gloomy past. She shook her head slightly showing disbelief and broke their eye contact before she fled out of the place leaving behind Ashwin and their hurtful past with him.

He kicked the air in frustration, loosing his last chance to talk to her, when he saw her shadow leave the passage after her. He dint even hold the strength to go after her. His guilt took him down on his knees when he saw his angel gone forever with her magic!

"Ava poita Mahaaa" His manly voice broke down and he wailed like a kid into the phone.

(She left me Maha)

"Enna taniya nikka vitu poita.....ava poitaaa"

(She just made me stand here alone....she left"
