Chapter 2

After all that, I walked home. I knocked on the front door. Rupert answered me. "Ah, Young Master. Back so soon?" he asked as he opened the door. "Yes. Where is father? I need to talk to him." I said as I wiped my feet and walked in. "Your father is in the library." Rupert said as he closed the door. "Is there anything I can do for you?" "No. I just need to talk to father. Thank you Rupert." I said as I headed for the library. When I was there I knocked on the door. My father answered it with a small smile. The same smile that he's has since Mother died. "Good evening Robert." He said. "May I talk to you." I asked. "Yes of course." He said opening the door all the way.

"I went for a walk in the woods today and I saw a girl in a net." I said as I walked in. He frowned. "Yes, I know. She had a mask on has brown hair. Won't ever speak though." He said as he looked out the window. "How did you know?" I asked looking out the window besides him. "I to, have encountered the girl. I was in the city when I saw her on a roof top. She looked hungry, but wouldn't except the food I offered her. She Just ran away." He explained. "Do you know who she is?" I asked looking at him. "All I can say is that she's a forest dweller." He said. "What's that?" I haven't heard of this term before. I knew you had your royalty, (the kings and queens), then there were your solutions, war generals, like my father, and then commons, peasants. "A forest dweller, Robert is a person who manly stays in the woods. They hunt and often trade among the commons. Some though are simply thieves." He explained. He looked at the clock. "I have to get back to work. I will see you at supper." He said as he showed me to the door.

I left and headed to my room. It was only 4:00 o'clock. So I had an hour before supper. I went into my room and went to the window. I spent the next hour thinking about the girl I saw and what father told me. Was she a thief? Why did she run from me? I sat there wondering until I heard a knock at the door. "Come in." I said looking towards the door. Rupert walked in. "It's time for supper young master." He said with a bow. "Very well." I said as I walked with him to the dining room. Father was there but he was too busy to talk. He was talking to the head of security. So I silently ate and went back to my room.

I sat by the window until I got tired and went to bed. I fell asleep around eight. I woke up around 10:00 to a sword being drawn. I sat up and opened my eyes. A man dressed in black was standing over me. I couldn't scream or anything. I was frozen in fear. I just watched as he drew the sword back over his head. He was just about to strike when my bed room window broke. Both the man and I turned to see what happened. And what I saw made me almost wet the bed. The girl I helped earlier bursted through the window. She was still wearing a mask and she had a sword of her own. She lunged at the man that was about to kill me. The man lunged at her and soon the two was having a deadly duel in front of the bed. And I was still there too afraid to move. Rupert threw the door open. Him, father, the head of security, and a few servants were there. I looked back at the battle. Well what was left of it. The man was on the ground and the girl was nowhere to be seen. "Young master are you alright?" Rupert said as he ran to my side. I was startled at the fact my father didn't look to concern about any of it. He just stood at the door way like nothing was wrong. "Young master, are you alright?" Rupert said anxiously. "I-I think so." I stuttered. Rupert sighed with relief. My father disappeared down the hall with the head of security. "Come on we'll clean up. You can sleep in the guest room." Rupert said as he touched my arm.

You'd think that I wouldn't be able to sleep after all that. But the truth is. I slept like a log. The next morning, I woke up to the sun shining in my face. I got up and saw Rupert at my door. "Glad to see you awake Young Master." He said sweating. "Rupert what's wrong?" I asked as I let him in. "Oh its nothing. Last night gave me a fright that's all." He said pulling out a handkerchief. "I'm alright. Really." I said with a smile. "I know Young Master I know. It's just, you could've been killed." He said while wiping sweat from his forehead. "You need to rest Rupert. Why don't you go have a cup of tea? That is sure to calm your nerves." I said putting my hand on his shoulder. "Very well Young Master, very well." He looked at me. "Try not to get hurt. Please be careful Young master. Please." I smiled Rupert was the best friend I could ask for. Always there for me. "I will, I promise." I said. "Thank you, thank you very much Young Master." He said as he walked out of the room. I went back to mine and got dressed. I grabbed a basket filled to the brim with food. I had to find her.

I walked down the path where I saw the girl last. I had questions and I was hoping she'd answer. I walked to a brook. I hadn't found her yet. That's when I heard someone muttering. "Why oh, why did you have to do that." It said. I ran as fast as my scrawny legs would carry me. I have good news and bad news from this. Good news is that I found the girl. Bad news is the fact I tripped on a tree root and landed flat on my face. The girl turned to run. "Please don't run! I only want to talk!" I yelled as I pushed the basket of food forwards. She eyed the basket for a while. Then she finally spoke "How do I know you didn't poison it." She says picking up the basket. "Why on earth would I poison it?" I asked getting up. "I don't know. Why would you even bring it?" she asked as she grabbed an apple. "Because I wanted to thank you for saving my life yesterday." I explained. "I did nothing of that sort." She says as she undid her mask. "Yes, yes you did. Last night that guy was going to kill me. You saved my life." I pointed out as she took off her mask to reveal a delicate pail face. She took a bite out of the apple and turned around and began to walk off. "No I didn't. I stopped him because I wanted to kill you." she said as she walked off. "Do I at least get to know your name?" I asked. She stopped for a brief moment and said. "The names Catherine." She said as she continued walking. She disappeared into the woods as I headed home.
