Almost Home

I woke up on a ship. I could feel that something was wrong but couldn't place where it was coming from, so I ignored it. We had finally won; I didn't want to ruin my own happiness. I sat up and went to the Rogue Shadow's cockpit to find Kota, Jai and Starkiller all together, looking grim. I got the feeling that our win was really a gilded loss. I tried to muster up the will to smile at my friends.

"There's no doubt that we're being followed," Kota spat angrily, turning back to the controls. "Pretending otherwise is completely pointless."

My smile fell much quicker than I wished it had. "Maybe so, but could we at least act like we won in front of them?" Starkiller looked ready to punch the old man and I regretted how much I related to the feeling. "They're children."

"They already know," he said, much quieter than before. "The fight will never really be over for them."

I gently put my hand on Starkiller's arm. He gripped my hand and I led him and Jaisa out of the cockpit. We sat on the bench seats in the back. I was so excited that my siblings could finally meet.

"Jai, this is our brother!" I squealed excitedly.

She held out her hand with a warm smile. "Hello. I'm Jaisa. It's wonderful to finally meet you."

"I'm Starkiller." He shook her hand happily. "But please, call me Galen."

Juno entered the room and Jai and I rushed to introduce ourselves. She was excited to meet us and thanked me sincerely for whatever I had done to save her life.

"You're family," I said bashfully. "I'll do whatever it takes to protect my family."

Juno hugged me tightly and I gladly reciprocated it. I really liked Juno. I was happy she at least seemed to like me.

"Let's give them some privacy," I told Jaisa as she accepted a hug from Juno as well. "They've been separated for a long time."

Jaisa gave me a look that had me giggling like crazy and we left, Galen shouting something after us as we dashed off to the cockpit. The door opened for us and closed behind us and we sat in two empty seats, still giggling to one another.

"That's not what I meant, Jai," I whispered to her as her cheeks flared red. "You're so gross."

"I'm sorry, I can't help it!" she squeaked. "You're the one that said it in such a weird way!"

My voice caught as I turned around wildly, beginning to panic. "Kota, behind us -"

Something made the ship jerk wildly and alarms began blaring. I fell from my chair and hit my head on the floor, seeing stars for a moment before shaking them away. "Can we fight back?"

"We can try," he told me as I stood up and grabbed onto his seat for stability. "Go straight down the hall and to the third door on the left. One of you climb up and the other climb down. Starkiller can man the other one."

Juno rushed in as we rushed out, taking the copilot seat as we found the third door and threw it open. I climbed up while Jaisa climbed down.

"They make this look easy in the movies," I mumbled to myself as I put the headset on and took the controls. The seat's movements took a second to get used to but I had little difficulty. Falling down the stairs really helps you figure out movement patterns much quicker. "Let's go, Jai, just like in the movies!"

"What movies are you taking about?" she asked over the headset. I just laughed and promised to show her later.

I could see the Slave I, the ship belonging to Boba Fett following us closely. "Right there, Jai! Hit it with all you've got!"

"Got it!" We fired at the same time, but the bounty hunter was much better at evasion than I had originally assumed. I let out a string of curses that made Kota laugh and Jaisa chew me out.

The ship shook. "Lucky shot," I heard Galen mumble.

"Trust your feelings, children," Kota said as the ship jerked sideways. "If you're not careful you'll rip the ship up on your own."

I took a deep breath, closing my eyes and reaching out. The chair swiveled and I squeezing the trigger, opening my eyes in time to see my shot hit the Slave I's shields.

"Nice shot! Keep damaging his shields like that and we might just make it out of here alive."

I kept shooting until my hands cramped and I could barely move them. I was beginning to feel almost hopeful as a shot hit the shields once more.

Then something exploded, giving me whiplash as I nearly fell out of my chair. I could smell fire. I shook my head clear and rushed down the ladder, looking for the source of the fire. I ran to Vader's prison cell of sorts and tried to open the door, but it was jammed. I closed my eyes, using the Force to look inside the room.

Vader is escaping, my mind whispered to my shipmates. The hull has been breached. If we don't land soon, she'll blow.

Get out of here, I heard Kota whisper back. Take your sister and go. We'll be alright.

"I'm not leaving you!" I said aloud as a red light turned on and alarms filled my ears. Something dripped into my eye and I wiped it away, my hand coming back crimson. "We're in this together, all of us. I'll save us."

I held out my hands to create a barrier around our ship, but the constant blasts from the enemy ship was quickly draining me of my energy. My knees were quickly trembling and I was soon finding it hard to see. My vision was getting blurry and no matter how much I blinked it wouldn't clear.

Jen, please, I heard my brother beg as he continued to fire at the ship. Please. Go. For me. Take Jai and get somewhere safe. You two have to survive this.

Tears fled down my cheeks as the firing stopped and the world around me fell silent. "Swear to me you'll stay alive," I begged, sniffling. "That all of you will make it out of here alive. Promise me that. Then I'll go."

"We'll do our best, Jenakin," Juno said resolutely, "but you know we can't make that promise."

Jaisa's hand was on my shoulder and I felt my fear beginning to crowd in. "Galen," I whispered. "I'm scared."

Never be afraid to face your destiny, he told me. Never be afraid to do what needs to be done.

I felt my resolve slip and my hands lower. Jaisa hugged me tightly and I held her just as tightly. My eyes closed and all went silent.

For a moment we were floating. I opened my eyes to see the battling ships right in front of us. With my last bit of energy I reached out and detonated the missile roaring towards the ship full of people I loved. The explosion would give them enough time to escape unnoticed. Then I closed my eyes one last time and let exhaustion pull me under.
