Naina pulled a pillow over her ears as the doorbell trilled. As she heard Rama issuing some instructions to Shanta bai who had arrived to do her chores for the day, she deduced that it must be about half-past eight. A small, content smile blossomed in her heart. There is almost nothing as satisfying as sleeping in late on a Monday morning when the rest of the world is rushing by!

The wedding was just six days away, and it was the first day of Naina's four-week leave. A whole month off from work! She thought excitedly and then rolled her eyes at herself. Seriously Naina! Shouldn't you be more excited that you are getting married rather than time-off from work??

Recalling something, she suddenly jumped out of the bed and stumbled to the phone. Dialing it, she suppressed a yawn. A few quick pleasantries were exchanged when Vishakha answered the call, till Vishakaha handed over the phone to the person for whom it was truly meant.

"Hi!!!" Both the girls squealed almost simultaneously. "I was expecting you to call at six!" Deepika chuckled. Naina laughed as she replied "I had considered setting an alarm, but then decided to let you catch some sleep. How was your journey? And how is Ollie?"

After chatting for a few minutes, they ended the call.

Rama called from the kitchen door "I have made your tea and toast. Let's finish off labelling those steel plates I have bought for the neighbors before you head out to meet Deepika. And yes, on the way back stop by Sharma Auntie's place and check if the Shewai are ready. Also, she has some new plate decorations. Pick whichever you like."

Naina muttered to herself "What is this obsession with everything being homemade? Then, it doesn't matter whose home was it made it!" But she knew only too well not to question her mother and grandmother's logic in these matters. Instead, she nodded her head and helped her mother with some of the preparations before heading to Ahmedabad.

The day was happily spent, catching up with Deepika and Oliver. The rest of the Somanis and Kabir were scheduled to arrive two days later.

Sameer had been at work during the morning half but returned home for a late lunch. Vishakha watched in pleasure as the two young couples engaged in some light banter over lunch.

Deepika teased "Bhai, I never knew that you are so interested in ladies' fashion. Mom and Naina were telling me earlier how long you took to select just one outfit!" Oliver smirked "Deepu, it not about ladies' fashion... it's only for a particular lady's fashion!"

Sameer groaned "Not you two too!" He then rolled his eyes "There is no pleasing women! It's a problem if I am not interested in the shopping. And it's still a problem if I am interested!" Naina retorted "Only when you are way too interested! We spent close to three hours selecting that one outfit!"

Deepu shared from her own experience "Don't worry... his newfound enthusiasm won't last too long. Let see if you are still complaining when you celebrate your first anniversary." Glaring at her husband she muttered "Already Ollie has started making excuses to get out of shopping with me..." For some time, Olive tried to persuade his wife that spending time with her was still his top priority!

Post lunch, all the youngsters headed out to finish off some shopping for Deepika and Oliver.

While Deepika was trying to choose some complementary outfits for herself and her husband, Naina scuttled closer to Sameer and pouted "Why won't you share where we are going for the honeymoon?? I can't decide what to shop..."

He shrugged "Stop trying to weasel it out of me. It's a surprise. I have already shared the essentials in terms of number of days and expected weather. Anyways, I will help you pack. And we can always shop when we get there..." His eyes twinkled with mischief as he quipped "And I am fine if you decide to treat clothes as optional." Scowling she retorted instantly "What sort of place is this? Where clothes are optional!" He drawled "Well, considering it's our honeymoon... I think, every place..." She gasped loudly as his words sunk in. Smacking his arm, she moved closer to Deepika, leaving him softly chuckling to himself.

That night as she lay in her bed, Naina blushed recalling his words. She wondered how he always managed to fluster her with his open innuendos. Whether it was five years ago when they had barely known each other, or now when they were days away from being tied in holy matrimony, he had always been disarmingly direct. The same words from anyone else would have probably seemed coarse, but when uttered by him they left her insides quivering in anticipation. Though she never voiced her desires, the blood in her veins had been simmering for long as well. She too impatiently waited for the self-imposed torture to end!

As she drifted off to sleep, Naina thought of the lingerie Deepika had bought for her. Not wanting to risk the women in her family finding them, she had asked Deepika to hold on them for her. She couldn't wait to see which one he liked the most!

Carrying a tray of disposable paper cups filled with steaming tea, Naina climbed the steps to the terrace. It was three days before the wedding. Her mother was assessing the temporary pandal installed. All the pre- and post-wedding functions at the bride's side were to be conducted here. A few of their neighbors were assembled there to help.

Rama uttered "Vikas bhai, this looks perfect! I am glad you suggested that we should choose the yellow and orange combination." Naina sounded excited as she offered them the tea "Yes Uncle! Orange for the Mehendi and Yellow for the Haldi!" Rama laughed "Look at her logic!" Vikas smiled indulgently "She is happy... that's what we want!"

As Naina moved on to offer the tea to others, Vikas said gruffly "Rama ben, our kids are all flying the nest. Paarth is already busy with his family in Mumbai, and now Naina will be gone too. Just us oldies left to keep each other company." For a few minutes they stood in silence, till Rama asked trying to brush away the gloomy thoughts "Paarth and Namita will arrive at two? After they freshen up, I will bring over the snacks. We are all eagerly waiting for them! Naina has got some toys for Aditya. It feels so good to have small kids running around the house!" He smiled "Another year or two and you will have your grandchild running around the house!" Her heart brimming with warmth, Rama glanced at her daughter who was talking with some teenage boys from their society.

"Didi, we are thinking of alternating two strings of white lights with one string of colored light. It will look pretty, right?" one of the young boys asked Naina. A thirteen-year-old girl spoke excitedly "Didi, I have borrowed dandiyas from my friends. We are going to play dandiya tonight, right?" Naina's eye sparkled as they finalized the plans for the evening.

She was discussing the arrangements with her neighbors when a boy called from downstairs "Naina didi! The guests from your sasural are here!"

Rama rushed to the parapet and exclaimed seeing the two cars being parked "Did you not say that they were coming at half-past-eleven?! It's barely past eleven!" Craning her neck, Naina muttered "I am sure he had said eleven-thirty... but it's definitely them." Rama chided her "Don't just stand here! Run home and change into something decent." and then addressed one of the youngsters "Raju, quickly go bring a crate of cola from the Sunil's shop. Tell him to add it to my account. And make sure all the bottles are cold."

Vikas urged her "Rama ben, you go and receive them. Vimla and I will join you soon."

Finding the guests already standing at their door, Rama ushered them in "Please come in. Sorry, we were upstairs checking on the arrangements." Mukesh said "Namaste Ramaji, this is my wife Keerti." Sameer added "Maa, you have already met Deepika and Oliver. This is my brother Rohan and his wife Sanjana."

Malati joined, as Rama warmly welcomed them "Rohan beta, Naina has told us a lot about your wedding. Sanjana, see you have been lucky for the family. Not even a year since you have entered their house, and already there are more wedding bells!" Sanjana smiled but was wondering was this really the sort of luck she had wanted to bring the family?!

Seeing Sameer's eyes searching for his soon-to-be-wife, Malati teased him "Apne dulhe ke liye tayaar ho rahi hai... waqt lagega!" Sameer blushed while Mukesh translated for the other youngsters who started teasing him. Rohan feigned a pained look and said "Sammy, this is going to be your life from now on... sitting on the sofa, waiting for your wife to get ready every time you plan to head out... doesn't matter if you are going to a function, or shopping, or even for just a walk around the block! I am sure Ollie agrees." Ollie mock glowered at Rohan "Bro, why are you trying to put me on the spot?? I am already in trouble with my wife... had to sleep on the floor last night!" Deepika muttered "Bhai, don't pay any attention to these two. They are just pulling your leg!"

Rama chuckled at their banter and explained "I think Naina misunderstood... we were expecting you at half-past-eleven." Mukesh smiled "Actually, we came a little early as I have some work later on." Sameer responded too "I tried calling before we left, but the phone was engaged." Rama nodded "Yes, I was talking to the Maharaj earlier who will be cooking for our guests for the next few days. How is Vivekji feeling?"

Vishakha and Vivek were supposed to come over with the Shagun, but Vivek had taken a little ill and hence Vishakha had requested her cousin Mukesh and his wife to step-in for the ritual.

Sameer nodded "He is okay... just a tummy upset. In fact, Kabir couldn't join us today for the same reason." Deepika chuckled "Auntie, this was bound to happen! You should have seen how many samosas those two ate yesterday, and that too with green chilies! Like it was some sort of a competition!"

Vimla and Vikas arrived just about then, and Rama explained "They are family to us. Vimla is like an elder sister to me... their son Paarth is Naina's Rakhi brother." Another round of introductions was carried out.

Sameer's eyes widened as Naina stepped out of her room dressed in a pretty, light-pink, chiffon saree. It has a small, dark-blue border and had a smattering of embroidery in the same blue color. A string of pearls, tear-drop pearl earrings and pearl studded bangles completed her look. She had left her hair open. He noticed that an unfamiliar tinkling sound accompanied her she walked into the room and headed to seek Mukesh and Keerti's blessings.

As Naina stood up, she quickly hugged Deepika and then turned to Sanjana and Rohan with a smile "I hope you are feeling rested now. I had called yesterday afternoon to talk to you, but you were sleeping." Sanjana frowned slightly "These long flights are so tiring! I can never catch any sleep... It was so hard waking up today morning as well. But Mom insisted that I must come along." Keerti spoke in a placating tone "Beta, you are the daughter-in-law of the house! If Vishakha didi couldn't make it... someone from the family had to be here. We are here to hand over Naina's shagun."

Rohan quickly spoke "Of course! How could we miss this?!" Turning to Naina he added warmly "We have been looking forward to meeting you properly. I know, we probably spoke a little during my wedding... but frankly, I can barely remember much of it now!" Naina smiled back "I can understand. It was such a huge event... and so many people! My colleagues still reminisce about it!"

Sanjana agreed "True... everyone kept saying they had never seen such a grand affair! Ro, do you remember the violet roses I had ordered for the decorations?? And the cocktail night was so much fun! We danced like crazy... everyone had a blast."

Sameer and Naina's eyes locked recalling their own version of the blast! Though he had cursed his drunken behavior the next morning, over the months, Sameer had decided that it was just the jolt they had needed to break their silence.

Ollie spoke impishly "Sammy, you owe me big time for teaching Naina how to dance that evening. Thanks to me, you got to twirl your girl" Not giving her bother a chance to responds, Deepika pouted "Stop hogging all the credit! I was the one who insisted on getting her all dressed up, right Naina?" As Naina smiled in acceptance, Deepika continued "Oh my god! I still remember that woman's shocked expression when she realized it was you! What was her name?? That coordinator..."

Caught in the moment, Sameer rolled his eyes "Radhika... the dragon boss lady! Man, she was a pain... She had a problem with everything Naina did!" Turning to Naina, he continued in a sarcastic tone "We should send her an invite to our wedding."

Sounding perplexed, Sanjana inquired "Was something brewing between you two during our wedding?? I thought, this happened after you moved to India..."

Sameer and Naina both resembled like startled does!

Rohan and all the elders in the room were staring at them awaiting their explanation, while Deepika and Ollie sheepishly looked at the floor.

Naina stammered "What could be brewing... I was so busy with work... and Sameer was busy with your wedding..." Sameer came to her aid "Naina told me about Radhika later... after we got to know each other."

To Naina's great relief, Raju arrived with the cold drink bottles. She and Rama got busy serving everyone the drinks and some snacks. Once the refreshments were taken care of, Keerti Mami accompanied by Sanjana and Deepika handed over the Shagun to Naina. Keerti conveyed Vishakha's instructions about certain things.

Sanjana asked to use the restroom. Rama pointed her in the direction, but thirty seconds later Sanjana returned scrunching her face "Naina, can you show me to another restroom with a western toilet? I just can't use the Indian ones..."

Noting Naina and Rama exchange some confused glances, Vimla spoke up "Beta, come with me. You can use the one at our place. My knees hurt during winters now... so Paarth insisted on getting a western toilet installed."

Chattering about something, Deepika followed Naina inside her bedroom when she went in to put away some of the Shagun related stuff. Interrupting her, Naina asked in a hushed tone "Deepu, do you know where we are going for the honeymoon?" Biting back a smile, the younger woman tried to appear confused "We are going on a honeymoon??" Naina tsked impatiently "Not 'we'! I mean Sameer and me..." and then colored when Deepika burst out laughing.

When she finally stopped laughing, Deepika said "Sorry, but I will not break Bhai's trust in this matter. It's just a matter of a few days now... He wants to surprise you! So, enjoy the suspense." She then continued in a playful tone "Though, I can see you are getting very impatient for the honeymoon... Shall I tell Bhai??"

Naina started imploring "Please don't tell him that! He won't stop teasing me if-" she stopped midway as Sanjana approached her room.

Noting that Naina had abruptly stopped talking on noticing her, Sanjana remarked "Sorry, if I have interrupted some private conversation... Auntie told me to come inside." Naina spoke in a rush "No no... come in. Deepu and I were just..." blushing a little she elaborated "I was asking her if she knows about the surprise honeymoon Sameer has planned."

Sanjana pouted "If I knew I would have definitely told you! But he won't share with even Ro and me." Deepika muttered sounding annoyed "Good thing too, that he didn't share!" Ignoring Deepika's words, Sanjana continued "I remember how excited I was about my honeymoon! Ro had booked us a suite in one of the resorts in Cyprus. But as a surprise my Dad upgraded us to a villa with a secluded beach. I can't tell you how beautiful it was! We even had a personal chef who would come in to cook us dinner. Naina, those seven days were just out of this world! I wish Sammy had discussed with us... I would have given him some amazing ideas."

With a slight nod of her head, Naina mumbled "Whatever he has planned, I am sure will be great." Even more annoyed at Sanjana, Deepika grimaced "I don't think a place plays much role in a honeymoon. Just how much the couple craves each other! So, Naina I am sure wherever Bhai take you... it's going to be memorable." The bride-to-be smiled bashfully.

Seeing the appraising glances that Sanjana was casting around her room, Naina muttered self-consciously "Shall we join the others? I will finish putting away this stuff later."

As soon as they stepped in the lounge area, Sameer called out "Naina, Maa was telling me about the setup on the terrace. Shall we go up for a bit? I would like to see it before leaving." She nodded eagerly "Yes, let's go."

The elders opted out of this trek to the terrace and so the three young couples headed upstairs by themselves. As soon as they entered the terrace, Naina started prattling off "Vikas uncle has chosen such a vibrant combination! The lighting will be done later today. Maa has asked them to light up the whole building and the entrance to the society." Pointing at a stack of mattresses piled to one side, she continued "Along with those mattresses, we have ordered some chairs as well. On the day of the Mehendi lots of marigold garlands will be hung up."

The decorations looked and sounded lovely, but it was the euphoria radiating from her face that touched his heart the most. He said lovingly "It's beautiful... just like my bride." Her cheeks flooded with colour just as he had expected.

After glancing around, Sanjana asked "Naina, why didn't you hire the wedding planner that we had hired? They used to put up different decorations fitting the occasion every day!" sounding unimpressed. Frowning, she added "Actually, you worked on those decorations yourself, right? So why are you going for such a basic theme for your own wedding?? I was telling Ro's Mom too... the decorations at their place too are not very personalized."

The blush that Sameer's words had infused, quickly drained off Naina's face. She timidly muttered "Here we don't hire wedding planners for every wedding... all our neighbors are helping out a lot. By evening, once the lights are up, it will start looking very different..." Sameer's jaw clenched, as he almost growled "This is how we want our wedding to be! Naina and I, like to keep things minimalistic. Not everyone is obsessed with wedding planning!"

While Deepika and Oliver exchanged worried looks, Rohan responded forcing out a nervous chuckle "Sammy is right! Everyone's tastes vary... Sanju, you were more than a little obsessed with planning the smallest detail of our wedding." He addressed Naina, in a warm voice "I am excited to experience what most Indian weddings look like!" Naina smiled graciously at his conciliatory attempts, but her previous enthusiasm waned.

Shortly the youngsters returned downstairs and the groom's side bid everyone a goodbye.

* * *

It was about dinner time. Vimla peaked into Naina room and said in a coaxing tone "Namita, shall we head home now? I have already feed Aditya. Naina too needs her rest before the wedding functions start!"

Naina pouted "Vimla Auntie, Bhabhi will come over in some time. I haven't shown her all the shopping yet!" she grumbled on "First of all their train was delayed by three hours! And then I had to spend the evening on the terrace making sure the lighting is done properly." Namita smiled "Mummyji, I will be over soon. There's just one bag left to go through." Vimla walked away saying "Carry on... I will get Aditya ready for bed."

Sometime later, after oohing and awing over all the shopping, Namita left for the night. Naina too joined her family for dinner. Post dinner, while the three women sat chatting, the phone rang.

Glancing at the clock, Rama nudged her daughter "I am sure it must be 'Madhu' calling for you!" It took Naina a few seconds to understand that her mother had caught on to her pretend phone calls with Madhu. As she fumbled "Maa... what are you... it's not..." Rama laughed softly "It's okay... you are getting married in two days now! I am hardly going to kick up a fuss over a few old lies."

To Naina's surprise, the caller turned out to be her Bela Chachi from Rajkot. After some quick greetings she handed the phone to Rama. She listened to the conversation at her end with intrigue.

As soon as Rama ended the call, Naina inquired a little tersely "What was she thanking you about?? Who had you called to invite personally? Please don't tell me you have been requesting Tauji and Taiji to reconsider attending my wedding!" Rama sighed "Don't worry... I didn't phone them. I had called up Preeti's in-laws." Seeing her daughter's baffled expressions, she shared "Bela had called up few days back. After Preeti received her invitation card... the one I had sent to her in-laws." When Naina muttered "Preeti's in-laws? Why??" her mother explained "Beta, it's important to do these things... else they could have unnecessarily taunted Preeti. Anyways, turns out Pandit's Bua's son works in Sameer's factory."

Laughing a little, Rama added "Preeti's mother-in-law got very excited after realizing the connection and started talking about attending the wedding. I think, she wants to flaunt to her sister-in-law that her daughter-in-law is closely related to the top-boss of that factory! So, Bela had called me to explain and requested that it would be good if I called to personally invite Preeti's in-laws."

When Naina stayed silent dwelling on this information, Rama admitted "I am relieved, that even if Bhaisahab and Bhabhiji decide not to come, there will be at least a few people from your father's side."

Finding a strange appeal in the thought that Preeti would be at her wedding, Naina asked softly "Will they make it here for the Mehendi?" Rama shook her head "No, but Bela said they will be here on the morning of the wedding, in time for the Haldi."

They discussed the plans confirmed by few other relatives for a bit before retiring for the night.

Later as she put away some of the things that had been left out after showing them to Namita, Naina absentmindedly smiled recalling her enthusiastic response. But her brow soon creased, as she recalled Sanjana's comments about the simplicity of wedding preparations. Why didn't you hire wedding planner?? Easy for her to say... My mother isn't some millionaire! And good for her if her father gifted her a honeymoon at an exclusive resort!

She folded the clothes rather shabbily as she wondered if this was going to be a norm, Sanjana highlighting the differences between them. Her anxieties about his family swelled. Other than his mother, Deepika and Oliver, nobody had made a genuine effort to make her feel welcome. Well, at least I won't have to deal with others on a regular basis... The appeal of living in India grew.

Trying to push away the negative thoughts, Naina turned her attention to the gifts she had received from Namita. Correctly anticipating the new bride's needs, Namita had brought her a handbag and a few cosmetics from Mumbai.

Posing in front of the mirror with the handbag, she decided that it was an appropriate size for travelling.

As she admired the cosmetics, she applied a lovely red lipstick thinking it would be perfect for their evenings out while on the honeymoon.

Once again, her mind started playing the guessing game, of their honeymoon destination.

Definitely not London. She was sure, knowing he had brushed away the idea of a reception there.

Goa? He does love being in the water! Her body tingled at the idea of watching him in the swimming pool.

Or maybe Shimla... I am sure he has realized by now how keen I am to see snow. The idea of being bundled up in duvets while sipping on mugs of hot chocolate was very appealing indeed!

Recalling that she had found him browsing some travel brochures one of the evenings when he had picked her up from work, she mused – Those were for Kerala... and he kept talking about houseboats after that for so long...

The phone trilled breaking the silence and starling Naina out of her thoughts. A glance at the wall clock established it was just before midnight.

Rushing to answer it, she uttered a shaky "Hello??" "Naina! I know it's late, but hope you weren't sleeping!" a girl exclaimed. She muttered "No, I wasn't... is everything okay?" The caller continued in a chirpy voice "Thank god. Cause someone's very eager to see you! And no rewards for guessing 'who'!"

Shocked, Naina mumbled "See me? Or talk to me??"

"I don't know what spell you have cast on my brother... he can't stay away even for a few days now! Even after meeting you just this morning!" Deepika chortled. There was some bickering in the background at her end before Deepika sighed "Okay, listen we are calling from the PCO at the corner. We are coming up. Meet us on your terrace right away!"

Before Naina could make any sense of the conversation, Deepika ended the call. Rama sleepily shouted from her bedroom "Who is calling at this time??" Naina called back "Go to sleep Maa... it was just Deepu. She wanted to tell me something... something she forgot to tell me earlier today." Pulling the blanket over her head, Rama grumbled to herself "Crazy girls... what is so important that she couldn't share tomorrow?"

Naina waited for a couple of minutes for her mother to drift off to sleep. Then grabbing the terrace- key, she tiptoed out of the flat and sneaked upstairs. Even as she climbed, she could hear the footfalls of a few sneaking up. Unlocking the door to the terrace, Naina switched on the low voltage bulb instead of the bright tube light, as that was least likely to rouse any neighbor's curiosity.

The moment Sameer stepped into the terrace, she questioned in a hushed tone "What are you doing here? At this time? Are you out of your mind??" Deepika who was following him closely, passed a teddy bear to him, which he instantly held out to her "I have been told off for apparently skipping some rites of passage of every love story!" She asked disbelievingly "You are here to give me a teddy??" His eyes glinted naughtily "And maybe a hug too..."

* * *

About two hours before.

Music boomed from the imported speakers that the owner of the house was very proud of, even more than the time his daughter has ranked third in her final exams of year one of school.

The house was filled with youngsters, and people who still aspired to pass off as youngsters. Mehul, Sameer's cousin, was hosting the party in honor of another lamb, or maybe ram, which was being led to the proverbial sacrificial altar. Of course, the ram in question here, was a very eager participant. In fact, very much looking forward to the altar!

Needless to say, all the guests were being plied with an abundance of food and drinks. Everyone was in great spirits! And everyone wanted a moment with the chief guest!

Constantly, his cousins and their spouses pulled him to the center of the temporary dance floor, which had been created by pushing back all the furniture in the room. People were moving their bodies to the best of their abilities, as the latest party hits played. Though a few English songs featured, the playlist mostly comprised of Bollywood hits.

'Kisi disco mein jaaye' from 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan' had just finished. As Sameer tried to leave the dance floor, another big favorite among his younger cousins, the Salman Khan starer 'O O Jaane Jaana' started. Two teenagers insisted on teaching him the signature steps of that number. Soon he was happily imitating the hook steps. A teenage cousin sister giggled "Sameer Bhaiya, you should consider joining our Bollywood. The audience would love to see another Salman Khan!" Chuckling softly, Sameer ruffled her hair "I don't think your Bhabhi will relish the idea of sharing her hero with anyone, even if its just on the screen!"

Mehul's younger brother yelled loudly "This is the best party ever!!! Even better than Rohan Bhaiya's dance party!" Chortling, Mehul explained to a shocked Sanjana "Don't mind him. With Mummy and Dadi being around, Ketan wasn't allowed to drink that day. Today, he is a little 'happy'."

Another teenage cousin seeing Ketan's state, sneaked to his room. On returning, he teased holding up a teddy bear "Just yesterday he was sulking that Neha turned down his proposal!" Ketan frowned for a moment, but then announced gleefully "Raat gayi baat gayi! There are many more fish in the ocean! And why should I get tied down to one so soon?!"

The cousin with the teddy bear laughed "So what are you going to do with this teddy now? Cuddle up with it at night till you find a fish willing to be tied to you???" Ketan glared as some of the other boys sniggered at this thought. Then making a quick decision, he handed the teddy to the eager ram "Sameer Bhaiya, you can give this to Bhabhi!"

Looking bemused, Sameer replied "Your Bhabhi is almost twenty-five, not fifteen! Not the right age for teddy bears..."

Rohan laughed "Sammy, a girl's age does not play any part in her love for soft toys! Please don't tell me you haven't given her even one yet!"

Nodding, Mehul shared "Your Bhabhi was in tears when I went to visit her at the hospital with a teddy just for our new-born baby. She started crying that I didn't love her as I had never given her one. I can't tell you how I scrambled to find one for her too!" Coloring a great deal, his wife muttered "That was just my postnatal hormones..."

Kabir too ribbed "I can't believe Naina accepted your proposal when the fundamental etiquettes of courting were not fulfilled! Please tell me you have at least showered her with flowers and chocolates. Mate, don't be too sure. She might still change her mind!"

"Why didn't you invite her to this party? We could have asked her if your courting was up to the mark. Unless of course, she was the one who courted you into submission..." Sanjana smirked.

With great effort, Sameer refrained from sharing his less than charitable thoughts with Sanjana. He was already annoyed at her for her earlier remarks to Naina about the decorations. Recalling Naina agitated look in that moment, his desire to dance was lost. Making some excuse he fetched another beer and joined some lads who were outside smoking. Not really interested in their chat about the up-coming elections, he stood at one end sipping distractedly.

"What's wrong?" Kabir roused him out of his thoughts. He started "Nothing is wrong... I am just" and then abandoning the idea, revealed "I tried calling her earlier, but her phone was engaged. She was upset by something Sanjana said this morning. I don't want her to dwell on it." Then glancing inside at all the couples dancing to some slow number, he sighed "Shit man... what wouldn't I give to hold her right now..."

Without meaning it, Kabir suggested in a conspiratorial whisper "Shall we sneak out of here and whisk her away somewhere??" Unexpectedly, his friend grinned in delight "That's it! Let's make some excuse..." Kabir was baffled "Sammy... I didn't really mean it. Dude, it's like eleven..."

But there are times in life when logic abandons one completely. And this was one of those times for Sameer. Ten minutes later, the four musketeers and a teddy bear were on their way to Khed. The chauffeur, though more than a little puzzled by the hour, drove to the place that he had become well acquainted with over the last few months.

* * *

Teddy bear and hugs... in the middle of the night??? Naina stood staring at him for a bit. Then, noting his words had slurred a little, she announced after taking a step closer and sniffing "You are drunk!"

Sameer shrugged "I am definitely not drunk! I have had just three beers." Ollie, who was standing a little behind him, uttered "And two rum cocktails!" As Naina's eyes widened in apprehension, Sameer pouted "Cocktails don't count! Colourful, pretty and decorated with silly little umbrellas... they are harmless."

His brother-in-law wryly chuckled "Mate, I hope you don't commit the mistake of ever extending that analogy to your wife. Never underestimate her deadliness by her pretty looks!"

Unfazed by this warning, Sameer smirked "Just because you are married to my panda sister with her sharp claws, don't generalize all women." While Deepika scowled hearing the reference to her childhood nickname, Ollie rolled his eyes "Definitely delusional!"

But lover boy was in his own la-la land, and crooned "My Naina is only sugar and spice... and all things nice..." Deepika giggled "Bhai, are you singing nursey rhymes?!"

A male voice prompted from further back "Move along guys... am I expected to spend the night in the staircase??"

The moment she spotted him, her gaze softening, Naina exclaimed "Kabir! You are here too?!"

Approaching her, Kabir pulled her into a half hug and admitted sheepishly "I might be the one responsible for setting this escapade in motion." He added "Big congrats from Farhana and me!" Naina first smiled and then replied sounding disappointed "Sameer and I were really hoping she could make it... But health comes first. How is she doing now?" Kabir replied "She is doing well now. But the doctor advised against any air-travel at this stage of the pregnancy." Naina rushed to agree "Of course! The baby is due in two months?" As Kabir nodded, she inquired "And are you feeling better?"

Once Kabir assured her that it hadn't been anything that an Imodium couldn't fix, Naina asked "What are you all doing here at this time? I was beyond shocked when Deepu called!"

Deepika shrugged "Don't ask me... I was just the messenger. Ollie and I were dancing at Mehul's party, when Kabir insisted we had to sneak out and come here!"

Kabir held up his hands in mock surrender "All I am guilty of is not being able to see the groom pining for bride! He looked so miserable..."

Trying to look very innocent, Sameer pouted "Naina, they all convinced me that you might not show up for the wedding as I have never gifted you a soft toy. How could I take that risk?!"

Understanding that there was no significant reason behind their visit, Naina just sighed.

A couple of mattresses were spread, and everyone settled down comfortably. Aware of the risks involved, they conversed in hushed tones. The party at Mehul's was at the centre of the discussion.

After observing her attire of a pale-yellow cotton shalwar and a light brown shawl, Sameer asked quizzically "You are dressed for bed, right? Then why do you have so much make-up on??" She explained "I was trying some make-up gifted by Namita Bhabhi." "Do I get to try some too??" he asked lowering his voice, eyeing her luscious red lips.

Before Naina to muster up a reply, Deepika fake complained "Bhai, that's gross... Are you forgetting your younger sister is here!" Sameer deadpanned "I have been grossed out by your and Ollie's making out sessions for years now. It's high time I return the favor."

As Deepika poked out her tongue at him in reply, he pulled Naina up and addressed his sister "On second thoughts... I think we will spare you the trauma!"

Deepika quipped "Don't take too long... leave something for the wedding night!" Her husband and Kabir fought to contain their laughter seeing Sameer exasperated and Naina embarrassed.

As they stood by the parapet a few feet away, still struggling to regain her composure, Naina muttered "Why did you really come?" Gazing at her intently, he shrugged "Just because I couldn't stay away."

Trying to swallow her nervousness, she tried to switch to a safer topic "Paarth Bhaiya is going to setup a sound system here tomorrow so that we can play music for different functions. Tomorrow after the Mehendi, we are going to play Dandiya here! Everyone from the society is invited. I can't turn them on now... but we had switched on the lights earlier and the building was looking very nice..." Her voice trailed off a little uncertainly towards the end.

Sameer pressed a finger to her lips "As I said earlier too, it's all very beautiful, but nothing compared to you. No lights can twinkle brighter than my Harinakshi's eyes." Her voice tantalizingly trembled just like her heartbeats "Sameer, every time you call me by that name, it instantly takes me back to that night." He replied huskily "Sweetheart, I know it's a matter of just a couple of more days. But every moment feels like an eon."

Her cheeks flaming, Naina impulsively pecked on his cheek and then turned away to gaze at the almost asleep town. Moving behind her, Sameer hugged her gently. A soothing impatience seized their hearts.

After about a minute of silence, Naina half-whispered "Namita Bhabhi has offered to take me to a gynecologist tomorrow morning. She will make some excuse to visit the beauty parlor or something." He sounded worried "Are you not feeling well?" She shook her head "No... in case I want to discuss anything about family planning. She asked me if we had talked about it. Sameer, we should talk about it, right?"

He gave her a reassuring squeeze "Don't worry... if we want, we can visit the doctor later together."

Her forehead creased "But... what about the first night?? I don't want to risk it... again." He murmured hoarsely against her ear "Hmmm... so you are thinking about the first night." She asked shyly "Well, aren't you??" He chuckled dryly "I am hardly thinking of anything else!" Mortified, she hit him in his stomach with her elbow. He lovingly laughed at her discomfit and then spoke "As I said, don't worry... I have already picked three packs of condoms."

Three packs??! Isn't that a lot?? Well, depends on how many are there in one pack... If there are ten in a pack, then... Naina was lost in some mathematical analysis of the data shared by him for a bit. He drawled "If we run out, we can always buy more on the honeymoon...." Sounding very flustered, she uttered "Enough about that! Seeing you already have it under control, I won't go to the doctor tomorrow."

Chuckling again, he shared "Seeing how easily you get worked up, I love teasing you! I am going to have so much fun after we get married!" Feigning annoyance at his words, she tried untangling his embrace "In that case, go home now so that I can enjoy my last few days of peace and quiet!" Cuddling her even tighter, Sameer crooned "Just another minute... pretty please..." He felt her relax in his arm in silent surrender.

But almost the very next moment the tube light in the terrace was switched on, flooding it with brightness. Thinking one of their companions were responsible for this, Naina squeaked "Turn it off! Someone might..."

The rest of the warning was deemed unnecessary when she heard her mother sounding confused "Naina?? What are you doing up here??"

Sameer quickly stepped away, but not before Rama and Paarth had noticed their proximity. Squirming at having caught them in such close quarters, the elder lady spoke sounding terse "Paarth, this is Naina's fiancée Sameer and his family..." As Paarth awkwardly muttered a "Hello..." she questioned the one of the culprits "Sameer, why are you here at this hour?"

For lack of any suitable excuse, Sameer stammered "Sorry Maa... we just wanted to..." Kabir rose to his rescue "Namaste Auntie. It's my fault! I was very eager to meet Naina once before the wedding." Scrutinizing at the unfamiliar young man, Rama muttered "And who are you??" Following Kabir's lead, Deepika exclaimed "Auntie, this is Bhai's childhood best friend Kabir! The one who couldn't join us earlier today. He really wanted to meet Naina and offer his congratulations in person. We were at a cousin's place... nearby... and hence decided to quickly drop-in on our way back."

Feeling torn between this improper behavior and the fact that they were her daughter's in-laws, Rama chastised her daughter "Naina, you should have received them at home! We don't welcome guests on the terrace past midnight." As Naina mumbled "Sorry Maa... I didn't want to disrupt your and Nani's sleep..." Sameer spoke hastily "We will get going now. Sorry about the disturbance."

Everyone started scrambling towards the exit. As he approached Paarth, Sameer addressed him "Nice to meet you... Naina was just telling me about how much you and Bhabhi are helping with everything." Paarth extended his hand to shake hands "Very nice to meet you too!"

Then clearing his throat, Paarth raised his hand to his own left cheek.

As Sameer looked on confused, Rama hissed at her daughter "Don't send him home looking like he has played Holi here!" Stepping forward, a deeply chagrined quickly wiped away the traces of her red lipstick from his cheek using one end of her shawl.

Post some hurried goodbyes and repeated apologies from the groom's side, the guests hastily departed.

Rama further chided her daughter as they headed to their flat "Do you have any idea how scared I was when I woke up to use the toilet and realized you weren't home?! I went to Vimla's place to check if you had gone to spend time with Namita. Thank god, Paarth was up watching TV and had the presence of mind to suggest we check upstairs before awakening the whole household or organizing a search party!"

Paarth tried to calm the elder lady "Masi, don't dwell on it now... his friend must have insisted... Otherwise our Naina is very sensible." Turning to Naina, he continued in a firmer tone "No more meeting him till the wedding now. Don't put Masi in an uncomfortable situation." Nodding vigorously, a red faced Naina rushed home and retired to her room.

The next morning, both Naina and Rama conscientiously avoided any reference to the previous night. Thankfully, many last-minute preparations kept them busy.

At some point, Naina sneaked upstairs and retrieved the teddy that had been left behind in the chaos of the previous night.

Late afternoon, everyone converged on the terrace for the Mehendi ceremony. The girls hired to apply henna arrived. True to his word, Paarth had sorted the sound system, and music played in the background.

Madhu was sitting next to Naina. She had arrived after lunch and planned to stay with them till the wedding. Naina had shared a curtailed version of the previous nights adventure with her when they had been on their own. Madhu had gone completely gaga over her friend's Majnu's madness! She had dreamily uttered "Yaar, please tell me if he has an unmarried brother or cousin..."

Unlike most of the other women, who were dressed in ethnic wear, Naina had donned a skirt and blouse which allowed the henna artists to easily decorate both her hands and feet.

Recalling his fondness for her exotic henna from their first time in Dasi Mahal, Naina choose an elaborate design which would extend to her elbows. After hours of painstaking effort, the girls left her with many instructions on how to ensure the henna would grow very dark.

The cooks served up Pav Bhaji, Paneer Pulav and Gulab Jamum. All the guests happily devoured the food and the cold drinks. When they ran out of cold drinks, one neighbor offered to make tea, while another insisted on making coffee.

As Namita fed the bride, admiring the henna, she teasingly whispered in Naina's ear "Considering Damadji's impatience from the last night, I am sure your henna will grow very dark!" Seeing Naina's embarrassed expression, she assured her "Don't worry Paarth didn't mention it to anyone but me."

Young and old, everyone took turns at twirling some dandiyas. Naina did what she could, which was just watch and enjoy their antics.

When Rama approached her with some Gulab Jamuns, Naina spoke softly "Maa... you aren't still mad at me about last night, right?" The last bits of the unease between them vanished as Rama fed her the sweet and kissed her forehead. She then bashfully shared with her daughter "Once, your father and I were young too." Her eyes suddenly glistened, as she uttered with yearning "Beta, he would have been so proud of you... I am sure, had he been here today, he would have danced the most!"

The mother and daughter duo were lost in their own wishful thoughts of what their lives would have been like had Rakesh continued to be a part of it.

Ironic, isn't it, how one always dreams of alternatives that are rosier than reality? Good thing too, how we are blissfully unaware that things could have been worse.

Meanwhile, in Ahmedabad, the caterers had sent up a buffet on the lawn and continental fare consisting of pizzas, pasta and some noodles were on the menu.

The sprawling pandal set up - covering the front lawn, the back garden, and the terrace of Jaiprakash Maheshwari's house - was filled with the chatter and laughter.

The women had got their hands decorated with henna earlier in the evening. The older women were discussing their outfits and accessories for the next day. Vishakha was repeatedly quizzed on the jewelry she was planning on gifting the new daughter-in-law. Vivek was happy to sip on some scotch and discuss politics and sports with the men. Occasionally, he would recall his duty as a host and enquire if the guest had enjoyed the food.

After partying hard, the previous night, the younger generation was content to sit and chat. Most of them lounging on the terrace, teasing those unfortunate souls who had ended up making a spectacle of themselves at the party.

When finding themselves alone, Kabir kidded his best-friend "Shall we go visit my Bhabhi again??" Looking horrified at just the thought, Sameer confessed "Man, for a moment there, I was afraid Maa might cancel the wedding! In fact, I tried calling Naina couple of times today, but ended the call without uttering a single word when Maa answered." Kabir burst out laughing "I didn't expect you to be such a fattu! Looks like Naina has completely tamed you." He scowled "Not Naina, it's India."

Kabir uttered "I am sure, now that the mission is accomplished, you can't wait to get back to London!" After silently staring into nothing for a bit, Sameer muttered "Hmmm... let's see when. This project will go on for some more time." Oblivious of his friend's touchiness on the topic, Kabir smiled "Farhana is looking forward to introducing Naina to her friends and showing her around. By the time you guys get there she will up and about." Sameer forced a smile and excused himself to go check on the other guests.

Naina's Chachaji, Anand, and his family had arrived from Rajkot before breakfast time. Since then, Preeti had either been stuck at Naina's side, or had been helping Rama with the last-minute chores. While Pandit had happily volunteered to help Paarth with all the other arrangements, from reviewing the transport and transfer of all the wedding essentials.

Anand had informed Rama that his older brother and sister-in-law would be arriving at the wedding venue directly. Over the next hour or so, based on Bela's gossip, Rama gathered that though Beena had declared that they would attend just to avoid any awkwardness in front of Preeti's in-laws, the reality was she was piqued by the accounts heard of the high-profiled family Naina was getting married into. Rama had been relieved that though the elders of the family would be present at the occasion, she didn't have to deal with them all though the day!

Naina was sitting on a wooden pallet on the terrace. More wedding songs were playing in the background. The neighborhood aunties, who had gathered for the Haldi ceremony, were fondly remembering how they had seen Naina grow up in front of them. Everyone was showering her with blessings for a fruitful future.

A misty eyed Malati watched the proceedings with joy, tinged with a little apprehension. More than two decades ago she had bid her daughter a similar emotional farewell, but destiny had played a cruel twist. Malati prayed that Rama would not have to deal with more misfortunes. Her daughter had stoically faced many heartbreaks and hardships. She hoped that watching Naina experiencing many years of joyous matrimony would ease some of Rama's heartaches.

"Preeti beta, come, you apply it next." Rama called to her niece.

Preeti moved to the front with a bright smile and dipping the mango leaves in the turmeric paste started applying it to Naina. As she applied the paste to Naina's hands, she gushed once again "Your henna is looking so beautiful! Mine never becomes dark like this!"

Her mother, Bela, tsked "Beta, for that you have to patiently sit in one place for hours! You are always in a rush to wash it..." Scrunching her nose a little, Preeti shared with her cousin "I don't like the smell! So can never keep it for long."

Lowering her voice, Preeti winked "But, let me assure you, all those old-wife's tales about how the henna becoming deep red indicates that husband will love his wife dearly, are just myths!" Naina beamed at her openness and uttered spontaneously "Do get in touch whenever you are in Ahmedabad next! It will be good to meet outside of each other's wedding functions." Preeti enthusiastically nodded.

Namita stepped forward next to apply the haldi, followed by few other neighborhood women.

"That's enough!" Naina squealed as Madhu and Preeti playfully tried to rub the left-over haldi on her face. Rama put a stop to their antic "Come on girls... lunch is ready. Naina needs to bathe and eat something before heading to the beauty parlor. Madhu, tell Vimla auntie when Naina is ready to eat. She will make some fresh sabudana khichdi for her."

Seeing herself in different shades of yellow in the bathroom mirror, Naina wondered if he was glowing as well. As she bathed, she recalled how perturbed she had been by the teasing he has been subjected to by his relatives during Rohan's wedding. It had led to her eagerly volunteering to take his aunts shopping that day. Though the accident had been an unfortunate event, it had played a crucial part in breaking the wall of secrets between them. She shuddered at the thought of how things would have been, had she stuck to her resolve back then to withhold certain information from him.

Wrapped in just a towel, Sameer stepped out of his bathroom after washing away the turmeric that all the women in his family had so excitedly smeared on him. A smile tugged at his lips, as he looked around. Last day of bachelorhood! From tomorrow, she will be here. In our room!

Checking his hair in the mirror of the new dresser that he had ordered in anticipation of her needs, he hoped she would like it. As he pulled out from clothes from his closet, he glanced at the one next to it which he had emptied for her few days back. His eagerness grew. Our life together is really starting!

Ramdhari knocked on the door to inform him that Vishakha had summoned him for lunch.

***

Naina was in a one of the classroom's which had been allocated to the wedding party to be temporarily used as a changing room. It was half past seven, thirty minutes past the expected time of arrival of the baraat. She muttered grumpily "Can you believe Mr. Always Perfectly-Punctual has chosen today to break his own record?! He is late to his own wedding!"

Adjusting Naina's ghoonghat, Namita lovingly scolded the impatient bride "Stop fretting! Half-an-hour is nothing! And the muhuraat for the Pheras is close to two at night, he will definitely get here before that." Naina pouted in reply "I really don't understand why our Marwari weddings take place in the middle of the night!"

Not aware of the reason behind these customs, Madhu shrugged "Probably because it must have been too hot in the desert to host weddings during the day..."

One of the girls gazing outside the window squealed "The baraat is here!"

Naina's palms turned clammy, and insides quivered. She chided herself for not clearly sharing her qualms with him. She had rationalized that his family had every right to enjoy their dreams for his wedding too, and she hadn't wanted to deprive them of these moments.

Few days back, as Deepika has shown her the Sharara she was going to wear during the baraat, she has shared "I am so looking forward to dancing during Bhai's baraat!" Turning a little sombre, she had confided gently clasping Naina's hand "The night of Rohan Bhaiya's wedding, my heart just wasn't in the celebrations. I was so worried about you being alone there in the hospital... also really mad at Bhai." Naina had sounded confused "Why mad at Sameer??" Suddenly realizing that Naina wouldn't have been privy to the accusations Sameer had hurled at her character in those moments of anger, Deepika had covered "Because, he insisted we had to leave you there alone and head back to Dasi Mahal!" As Naina had tried to assure Deepika that he had done the logical thing, Deepika had rushed to change the topic "Well, this time I intend to make the most of it! Be prepared to wait for your groom for a long time, while we dance like crazy and burst a lot of firecrackers!"

Craning her neck at the window, Namita called out "Naina, they have entered the gates!" As she and the other young women rushed outside, Namita beckoned Naina "Come, let's go outside to the balcony. We will be able to see the baraat properly from there!"

A burst of firecrackers could be heard.

"You carry on..." Naina shook her head, as she felt a little queasy thinking - What if the firecrackers spook it??

Beaming widely, Preeti who was still at the window, exclaimed "Wow Naina!! Jijaji has arrived with a NRI style baraat! In a red open convertible!" Naina asked unevenly "Is he not on a horse??"

As soon as her cousin answered in negation, the colour flooded back to her cheeks and her breathing started returning to normal. Taking a deep breath, she eagerly headed to the balcony, with Preeti closely following on her heels.

The open convertible moved at a snail's pace, taking multiple stops along the path leading to the main school building. True to her word, Deepika and her husband danced to their heart's content. A bule-eyed Caucasian dancing in a baraat was a novelty for many of the guests and attracted lot of attention. The photographer clicked more photos of Oliver than Sameer during the baraat!

But Sameer's eyes were only searching for his Naina. The moment he caught a glimpse of his mesmerizing bride in the balcony, Sameer's heart swelled with love and pride. She is finally going to be all mine!

While the women keeping her company oohed and aahed over the dashing Dulha, Naina unblinkingly met his gaze. Though in the midst of so many, they could have easily been alone.

As Rama and the other elders on the Agarwal side welcomed the groom and his family, Naina was ushered away to the classroom for retouching her makeup, considering she would be summoned soon.

Downstairs, some introductions were carried out between the close relatives from both the sides.

Recalling Naina's warning about Vishakha's mother-in-law's snobbish nature, Rama made every attempt at respectively welcoming the old lady. Appreciating the effort, Vishakha whispered to Rama "Thank you! Half my tension disappears if she is happy!" Rama smiled in understanding and replied, "Please let me know if anyone else needs any special attention too." In the last couple of months, the two women had a come a long way: from their initial distrust of each other to the realization that both shared a common goal, a happy married life for your children.

Rama had requested Anand to take on the duty of ensuring the Naina's father-in-law was coddled as befitting his status. Of course, apart from making Chachaji feel like he had a role to play in this wedding, Rama wanted to ensure that everyone noticed the presence of her in-laws. She had a simple philosophy – What is the point of airing your dirty laundry in public? After all, every family has some of it!

A little later, the bride was led towards the stage surrounded by the young women in her family, where her groom was eagerly awaiting her arrival.

Rushing forward, dressed in a peacock blue Sharara, Deepika beamed as she hugged her "You are looking so beautiful!! Naina, we are officially going to be sisters now. I can't wait!!" Oliver rolled his eyes at his wife "People might think you are more eager for the wedding than your brother!" Turning to Naina, he smiled warmly "Though I might be handling my joy better than her, I am just as happy to welcome you to the family!" Naina smiled emotionally "I already think of you two as family."

Rohan stepped forward, smiling "Don't forget, you are getting another brother as well." Naina smiled back "Of course, I haven't forgotten." Sanjana who had been trailing behind a little, now joined them "Sorry... I am not able to walk fast today... this ghangra is so heavy!" Taking in the beautiful peach colored creation, Naina uttered warmly "It's very beautiful... suits you." Sanjana beamed "Its' a designer piece covered with crystals!" Looking at Naina, she added, almost as an after thought "You are looking lovely too!" As Naina muttered "Thank you..." Namita nudged her "Let's get you to your groom, the poor guy must be getting impatient for his bride!"

The auditorium stage, which was usually used during school assemblies or other events like drama or debate competitions, was heavily decorated. The back of the stage was covered with multicolored strings of marigolds and roses. Styrofoam letters spelled out 'Sameer weds Naina'. As rightly predicted by the saree salesman, it was covered with a red carpet. Two special highbacked chairs resembling thrones were placed at the center. A huge fan to one side sprayed the area with rose water.

As Naina ascended the steps, Sameer realized that the glimpse he had caught of her earlier had not done her any justice. Jewelry made from gold, pearls and kundan had turned her into a dazzling vision. His mother had been right!

She was dressed in the red bridal saree with heavy golden brocade. The pallu covering her head, along with the Rajasthani Maang Tikka had transformed her into a very traditional looking bride. A seemingly strange thought swirled in the depth of his soul – This is how she was always meant to look like. Today, we will set it right.

Oblivious to her surroundings, Naina's gazed at him. The cream colored sherwani he had donned along with the bejeweled, pink turban, gave him a regal look. The history buff's heart swooned - The king of my heart! Finally, I get to become his queen.

"You look... gorgeous..." he uttered sounding completely awed. One of his aunts called out loudly "Vishakha didi, your son is a total gone case! From now on, if you need him, check Naina's Challa!" As Naina blushed deeply, everyone around burst out laughing, teasing the couple. Their family and friends refused to allow them even a moment of privacy!

After some time, Preeti and Madhu sneakily approached Sameer. Preeti said in a low voice "Jijaji, in case you have anything to say to Naina, we would be happy to provide you our personal messenger service. But of course, it will cost you! And that too in Pounds!" Madhu grinned "I will be happy to waive my share of the charges... but, only if you introduce me to some eligible bachelor. Just like you!"

Sameer smirked at Preeti "Saaliji, first of all, Naina and I don't need words to talk to each other." Then he winked at Madhu "Another Sameer Maheshwari... that's impossible! But if you are willing to compromise a little... maybe we can find someone for you!"

When it was time to exchange the Jaimalas, Rohan and Kabir hoisted Sameer on their shoulders, while Paarth and Pandit lifted Naina on theirs. The battle to hold their generals high and upright was zealously fought by both the sides for long. Even when both the generals were very impatient to relinquish!

Finally, deciding that she had valiantly fought for a respectable amount of time, much to her army's disappointment, Naina bowed her head in surrender. Someone now teased her mother "And Rama didi, if you can't find Naina anywhere, be sure to check Damadji's pockets!"

Wearing the heavy garlands, the bride and groom accepted the congratulations and sought blessings of all the wedding guests. Along with their best wishes, more than a few guests complimented the bride on the food being served.

Of course, Guptaji was one of them. After offering his congratulations, he winked at Sameer, "Though the food is good today, I am really looking forward to tomorrow's reception!" Vibha sighed "Guptaji, do you ever think of anything but food? I pity your poor wife!" She then happily addressed the newly-weds "I still can't believe you two are getting married! Seems like just yesterday we were on that Sudhagadh assignment. Naina, you are looking so pretty! Sir, you too! I mean... not pretty, but handsome!"

As soon as Naina introduced Sameer to her boss Asmita, the older lady teasingly addressed the groom "Young man, you owe me big time! I had pushed her to take on that assignment." Much to her surprise, Sameer replied with the utmost sincerity "I can never thank you enough for sending her on that trip!"

Naina's Tauji and Taiji, tried to act very self-important, but nobody seemed particularly impressed by Taiji's repeated claims of her husband being a very renowned lawyer in Rajkot. To add salt to her injuries, almost everyone gathered showered high praise on Rama for single handedly bringing up such a wonderful daughter!

When they finally had a few minutes to themselves, Naina shared "I was so surprised to see you arriving in the car! I thought, like Rohan you would be arriving on horseback too..." Leaning closer, staring into her beautiful khol-lined eyes, he replied "My family was keen to see me on the horse, but I did not want to risk my bride fainting on our wedding day!" Realizing he had understood her unspoken fears, Naina wanted to hug him tightly in that moment. Instead, she settled for clasping his forearm tightly and muttering "Thank you... I love you Sameer!" He whispered back "Love you too."

Kabir interrupted their lovey-dovey moments and spoke "Naina, Sammy wanted to visit you last night too. He wanted to bring you an extra-large heart shaped greeting card." Seeing the guileless girl's horrified expression, he added "I had to physically restrain him!" She turned to Sameer. "Seriously?! Even after Maa catching us! Do you have any idea how embarrassed I was when she saw that... mark..." her voice trailed off not able to speak more on that topic.

Sameer glowered at Kabir, who was laughing now. He then addressed her "He is just kidding... forget visiting you again, I couldn't even find the courage to ask for you on the phone yesterday when Maa answered it."

Preeti and Pandit arrived with some coffee for the bride and groom. They all stood chatting amicably for a bit, till more guests arrived.

Though she did not openly express it, Pandit's mother was secretly very pleased when she discovered that Sameer was only vaguely aware of her nephew, as he did not hold a very high management position in the factory. She was looked forward to rubbing this in her sister-in-law's face!

Despite repeated scolding from Ramdhari and Champa, a super excited Munni, dressed in a pretty yellow ghagra, ran around the stage at very chance possible! She also fetched them many cups of unwanted cold drinks and then consumed them herself. Her antics brought many smiles to Naina and Sameer.

Sometime later, everyone headed to dinner. The bride, the groom and his family were served by personally by Naina's close family and friends. Though it was a lovey meal, the best Rama's budget could afford, it was very different to the twenty-one-course meal served at Rohan and Sanjana's wedding feast. While most of the groom's family expressed their appreciation, there were some pointed glances and sniggers exchanged by few of the guests.

Finally, the actual wedding rituals started. Other than the few close family members who had an active role to play, the other guests either sat chatting in groups or dozed off, finding themselves a comfortable spot.

A supposedly English speaking Panditji had been engaged to perform the wedding rituals and explain it to the groom. Though both tried their best, the groom struggled to follow the relevance of a lot of what was being said and done, considering the Panditji's strange blend of English-Hindi-Marwari-Gujrathi.

Finally, Sameer whispered to Niana "I promise to love, cherish and respect you with all my heart. Forever." After few moments thought, she responded softly "I promise to stay by your side through all the challenges that life might bring our way. Forever." He frowned "What about love??" She giggled "Buddhu! That is implicit." He pouted "Well, I would prefer that you promise it explicitly." Smiling shyly, she said "I promise you. I have loved you and will love you from the depths of my soul. Forever."

To Naina's disappointment, despite much insistence from her daughter, Rama had insisted that she would not do the Kanyadaan. It was probably a mix of the fears of any unnecessary drama from the elders on the groom's side and her own doubts of her good luck, but Rama had not wanted to cast any shadows on the start of her daughter's new life. Naina had not been receptive to the idea of any of her father's brothers, who had absconded from her life all these years, to claim a kinship with her for a day. She had instead requested Vimla and Vikas to give her away. The couple who had always been more like family to Naina than neighbors, had happily agreed saying it would be their privilege to do the much-coveted ritual.

After Sameer tied the Mangalsutra around her neck and filled her Maang with the Sindoor, it was time for the Pheras. As Naina walked around the holy fire, she imagined all the misunderstandings and doubts of the past burning away. She was resolved that they would start a new life together with happy love filled hearts.

Post the completion of the Pheras, the newly wedded couple sought the blessings of all their elders. Naina was slightly perturbed when her mother guided her first towards the Somani Dadi, when she would have preferred to start with Naniji. When they bent forward to seek Naniji's blessings, Malati was already in tears in anticipation of the Bidai.

Soon it was time for Rama and Malati to bid their daughter goodbye with happy and yet heavy hearts. As expected, it was an emotional time for the bride and her family, and many tears flowed.

Promising Rama and Malati that he would keep Naina happy, Sameer ushered her into the car specially decorated for the newlyweds. Naina realized that in all the excitement of starting her new life, she had greatly underestimated the trepidation bound to consume her about all that she would be leaving behind.

Not able to bear her forlorn expressions for long, Sameer cheekily asked her "So, have I now been granted permission to unwrap my gift??"

She turned to him looking incredulous, wondering – Is that all he can think of? Even in this moment?!

But then realizing that he was kidding, just trying to lighten the moment, her scowl turned into a small, sad smile. Entwining their fingers, Sameer dropped a tender kiss on her forehead and reminded her "Don't worry, you will meet Maa and Naniji tomorrow evening at the reception."
