The new training assignment had started the previous week. Naina had started it with a lot of enthusiasm, but it had slowly dwindled and was replaced with just gritty determination.

Out of the two new recruits, one was young, bright and easy to train, but the other older employee was testing her patience!

For what felt like the hundredth time, Naina once again explained what the different buttons and messages on the screen meant. Asmita's cousin, who was pursuing his post-graduation in computers, had a built a software application for their travel agency as part of his course requirements. Built by an amateur, it wasn't necessarily the most robust application, and had a few quirks. The 'Save' button on some screens had to be clicked twice, and some of the error messages only left the user even more confused!

But Asmita was very proud of her cousin's creation and expected her staff to use it quite diligently! And hence Naina found herself training the new recruits not only on the software but also some basics of operating a computer.

The older middle-aged recruit turned to Naina with a look of accomplishment-cum-relief as he successfully entered and saved the record for the end of tour reports handed in by one of the tour guides.

Naina smiled at him encouragingly, as her eyes drifted to her watch with anticipation. It was just a minute past mid-day. Having planned everything almost to the minute, she had to leave in five more minutes.

Reminding her colleagues that she had to step out for some urgent personal errand, she picked up her purse. A quick check later, confident that she had the most essential content, Naina walked out of the office door.

The walk of a few minutes was covered with fast accelerating heartbeats. To her disappointment, the yellow PCO booth with the STD/ISD lettering painted across it was occupied at that moment.

Naina approached the guy manning the booth and reminded him that she wanted to make an international call. For good measure, she added importantly, to London! He immediately tapped on the window of the booth with raised eyebrows. The man inside mouthed that he needed just another minute.

When she entered the booth, she was running just two minutes behind schedule.

It was the first time she was calling him or making an ISD call for that matter! A little nervously, Naina carefully tapped the long series of numbers. The ringing of the bell was accompanied by the wild thumping of her heart.

Exactly eight rings later, a heavily accented lady spoke from the other end.

A little scared, Naina's first thought was that she had misdialled. But the number on the electronic display matched the one he had meticulously written on his business card. And then another bigger fear rushed in, What is a woman doing in his flat this early in the morning? It can only mean that she had spent the night with him!

Not wanting to believe her doubts, Naina uttered shakily "Hello? Is this Sameer's number?" But instead of responding to her query, the woman started requesting her to leave a message saying Sameer would call her back.

Leave him a message with some other woman to call me back? Does she believe me to be so delusional and desperate?! The indignation in Naina grew by the second. Before she could bang the phone, the woman stopped talking abruptly and Sameer asked in a sleepy confused voice "Naina? Is that you??"

The vision of him asleep in his bed with some British girl who had grabbed the phone for him, knocked the air out of her. She stammered without much thought "Sorry... I think I disturbed you... I will..." talk to him later? Why Naina??!

While she was still trying to make some sense of the situation, Sameer uttered sounding stupefied "Hey, I was asleep... I didn't expect you to call. This is a surprise!" She gritted her teeth at the end thinking, He is surprised?? Well, I am beyond shockingly surprised!

"The answering machine kicked-in before I could get to the phone." he added. She went still for a moment and then asked incredulously "Answering machine?? So, that isn't a real woman?" He stifled a yawn and responded baffled "Woman? What woman?" "I thought that lady answering the phone was real..." Naina muttered feeling embarrassed.

Sameer's brow creased for a bit and then he chortled "What?! You are so funny!" Naina coloured that he was laughing at her expense "She sounded real enough..." He settled on the armchair next to the phone "You thought there is a woman with me here? Hmmm... well, I suppose there is one, in a sense... but this one just answers the phone on my behalf. And god-only-knows for how many others!"

Naina leaned slightly against the walls of the PCO cubicle in relief. How stupid can you be Naina?!

"Happy Birthday Sameer! Many many happy returns of the day!" She spoke with a smile in her voice. "Thank you!" he replied with a grin spreading across his face, "Why did you call? I was going to call you a later tonight."

"I wanted to wish you before you left for the day." Naina admitted a half-truth. "Oh... you mean that you wanted to be the first to wish me, right?" He drawled out with a smirk in his voice. She started objecting "Nothing like that..." but stopped and then confessed "Yes, I did."

His voice was soft and seductive "I am glad you did. This is a perfect start to the new year of my life. The only thing better would have been if you were wishing me in person. Waking me up with a kiss... instead of this call from so far away..."

For a bit, blushing deeply, she let herself to be lulled by the enchantment that was purely him.

Then snapping out of it, she asked "So, are you still meeting Deepika for lunch?" He shared "No, there has been a change in the plan. I am meeting her and Ollie for dinner instead. She has some deadline at work, so lunch would have been too rushed."

"That's even better! It didn't feel right that you would have been alone after work, especially today. I hope you all have a wonderful time together! Do say my hello to both of them." Naina exclaimed happily.

But some of her excitement immediately waned as her eyes landed on the mounting charges on the electronic display. Rs 293 already? But we have barely spoken...

Unaware of her anxiety, he continued "Deepu was asking me about you when I met her at Mom's over the weekend. She said she will definitely write to you in a few days."

Rs 310... She blinked nervously.

"Oh! And Kabir wanted me to convey to you that he really wishes you could have been a part of his wedding celebrations! Farhana too had a long list of questions about you when I last met her." He shared warmly.

Rs 325... She muttered distractedly with an eye on the display "That's so sweet of her! I hope all the preparations are coming along well. Do convey my best wishes to both him and Farhana."

Recalling something, he exclaimed "Guess what! Mom liked the idea you had proposed for their wedding gift. Apart from the watch I have already got for him, I am going to get some special cutlery that they can used while entertaining. Mom said she knows just the place and will pick up something on my behalf."

Rs 337... Normally she would have wanted to know in detail exactly how much his mother had liked her suggestion. But acutely aware that she had only Rs 400 in her purse, casting a glance at the empty space outside the PCO, Naina spoke feeling deeply mortified "Sameer... There is a big queue outside the PCO, I can't talk for much longer..."

Though more than slightly disappointed, he nodded "That's okay... we can talk properly on Sunday. And I will definitely call you before that if I get any update on the Visa application, okay?"

Naina repeated her wishes "Happy Birthday once again!"

"Thank you once again!" Sameer smiled. And then he added in a playful tone "Maybe I should change the settings on my answering machine and choose a male voice instead! Just to avoid any further interrogation... what do you think?"

She blushed but replied with an attitude "I don't care..." "Liar liar... pants on fire!" he chimed back. With a finality to her tone, she said "Bye! And have a lovely day!" He smiled "Bye..." and ended the call.

Her questions about his weekday routine on the last call added up now! He smiled recalling parts of it.

Sameer had called on Saturday instead of the usual Sunday. Naina had rushed to the phone anxiously calling out to her mother "It is Madhu! She had said she might call..."

He had laughed lightly "So, I am Madhu today." Naina had lowered her voice "Is everything okay? Did you get any news about the Visa?"

"Everything is okay... but no news of the Visa yet." He sighed. She was confused at the deviation from their routine "So why did you call today??" He had explained "I am going to Mom's tomorrow. She has organised a family get-together. Rohan and Deepu are coming over too, along with her better-halves."

She had smiled back "That will be nice!" and then she had asked hesitantly "Do they want to discuss something about your move? Are they still not okay with it?"

A small smile tugging on his lips, he had replied "It's not that... actually, Mom is very excited that I am in London after many years for my birthday."

Naina had exclaimed "It's your birthday tomorrow?! Why didn't you tell me?? I would have..." and then she had stopped abruptly not sure what she would have done.

Sameer's shoulders had shaken in mirth at her reaction "Would you have dropped by for a surprise visit?! Anyways, it's not tomorrow. Mom has planned the lunch for tomorrow since it's on Tuesday and everyone will be busy it being a weekday."

After chatting about few other things, she had asked him various questions about what time does he leave for work and when does he wake up and so on.

Sameer now thought smugly, So, this is what she was trying to figure out... What would be the right time to call me in the morning!

Glancing at the clock, he decided that now that he was up and awake, he might as well start his day. There was much to be done before he returned to Ahmedabad.

The last few weeks in London had been filled by frantic meetings with clients and presentations of new proposals. Long hours had been spent reviewing the analysis of upcoming trends shared by his marketing research team. Numerous phone calls had been exchanged with Dinesh's team to get certain preparations underway in Ahmedabad too.

Sameer had always enjoyed the thrill that came with new ventures, the pressure that pushed him to new heights, and the satisfaction that came with it on reaching the pinnacle.

But this time the everything was on a different level. The stakes much higher and the promise of rewards much more personal. The determined glint in his eyes bellowed his resolution to emerge the winner.

Noting the final charge displayed was Rs 359.60, Naina handed the PCO owner four hundred rupees.

As he handed back the change of forty rupees and few kismi toffees, she enquired, still in mild shock "Do all international calls cost so much?" The owner shrugged "They are usually in the same range... but charges do vary a bit."

She nervously bit on her lip "It must be costing just as much to call from London, right?" The man nodded "Yes, usually the tariffs between countries are fixed." Then trying to explain it in layman's terms he added "Think of it like this, whether you call Delhi from Ahmedabad or the other way around the charges are the same!" She had pondered on this information as she put the money in her wallet.

Naina had been about to give the owner her usual lecture on how he should make sure to keep enough small change handy instead of handing out unwanted sweets, when something struck her. Smiling to herself she unwrapped the red wrapper and popped one toffee in her mouth, Naina, think of this as his birthday sweet!

* * *

That night, as she sat in her bed sucking on another toffee, Naina dwelt on their latest conservation once again.

At least his mom liked my idea for Kabir's wedding gift! She took some heart from it. Though she had not raised it with him, there was the expected amount of anxiety bubbling inside her. She often wondered what his parent's reaction would be when they found out that Naina was the reason behind Sameer's move to Ahmedabad.

A tiny voice nervously piped, That is, if they find out.

Even though they had been reconnecting rather well, Naina tried to not lose perspective. Fact was, he was moving to spend time with her and figure out if they could actually have a future together. There was still no real commitment between them.

Life had changed her.

Five years ago, she had been the naïve girl who had dreamt of a 'happily after' just after spending one night with him, even though there hadn't been any promises from his end. And now, even his moving continents did not quickly inspire that level of confidence in her.

Was it just a matter of age blowing some wisdom her way? Or was it that the more she got to know him the more the disparities between them became evident?

Her mind drifted to one of their conversations, when they had first discussed Kabir's upcoming wedding at length.

He had shared "Tomorrow I will pick up the watch that I want to gift him. I want it to symbolise the start of a new phase of his life, a happy one!" She had mused "Why aren't you getting them something that is a gift for them both? Something for their home? Maybe some nice serving ware. They don't plan to live with his parents, right?"

He had scoffed "Kabir's parents will never welcome her into their home to live with them. That this wedding is happening, and they have agreed to attend it, is a miracle in itself! Well, to be fair to them, it's the same with her parents too."

Sameer had sounded drained just from the memories, as he went on "You have no idea how much drama has occurred in both the households! Poor Kabir and Farhana... Couple of times they almost gave up. But then they realised that they just couldn't live without each other. Just fifteen minutes with them and anyone can see how perfect they are together!"

"Farhana?? Is she Muslim?" Naina had asked tentatively. "Yes, and to make matters worse, her parents are originally from Pakistan. So, you can imagine how that must have got the families further worked up!" he disclosed.

Naina's eyes widened in shock at this revelation leaving her a little scandalised. Oblivious of her state, he had continued sharing his extremely strong opinions "In this day and age, why are people still so hung up on these things?! Two educated adults, very much in love with each other, want to build a life together. What's wrong with that? If they can find it in their hearts to accept their chosen partner's values and beliefs, who are others to have an issue with that?"

As Naina tried to grasp his thoughts, he carried on blowing off some more steam "I really can't understand this logic! I mean, their grandparents were all born in the same country, the old India under the British Raj. Kabir and Farhana were born in UK. Then why is just one generation in the middle being born in different countries such a big deal?!"

"Don't you agree that its absolutely absurd?!" he had passionately posed his question. Naina had fumbled with both the telephone wire and her words "I suppose so..." He had declared hotly "Completely ridiculous if you ask me!"

Not sure what would be an acceptable response, she had hummed back. It was crystal clear where he stood on this issue, but having never looked at things from this angle, Naina had felt a little unclear of her own thoughts on the same.

During the wedding she had already realised that they came from different worlds, but their phone conversations had exposed more and more of the differences. His life choices, lifestyle, and values. Everything presented her with challenges. Would she be able to surmount them? And in the quest to transcend them how much of herself would she have to shed?

"Well, at least, we don't have to worry about the surgery for the next few months. I am so relived that the doctor is happy with the latest results!" Rama enthusiastically shared the highlights of the visit to the doctor with Vimla.

Malati tutted "I keep telling you all the time that I will be fine without that surgery! What do these doctors know?? In fact, now, you all should stop fussing over me all the time. Stop all this nonstop... do this... don't do that..." As Rama and Naina shook their heads dismissively, Vimla smiled "Kaki, you are better only because of all that fussing!"

Turning to Rama, Vimla said "Now that you are not that worried about Kaki's health, it's time you started worrying about Naina." Before Rama could reply, Naina responded "What's the need to worry about me? I am absolutely fit!"

Vimla laughed lightly "Of course you are fit. But we need to find another family for you to fit in now!" Malati nodded approvingly, while Rama smiled "I will start looking into those biodatas dropped by Mrs Mehta."

Naina's countenance shifted "Maa, let's not start getting ahead of ourselves. The doctor has only said that the surgery can be postponed by the few months, not that it isn't required. And I am not going to consider marriage till Nani's surgery is carried out and she recovers completely." Having said her piece, Naina stood up and headed to her room.

Sighing deeply, Rama addressed Vimla "Didn't I tell you that she isn't even ready to talk on that topic?" For some time, the three women shook their heads over how these things take long and just starting to look for an alliance does not mean Naina would be getting married the next month. Vimla then left for her home informing them that she needed to put some rice to cook for dinner.

Once inside her room, Naina folded her freshly done laundry rather haphazardly, while trying to come up with a strategy to stall the find-Naina-a-groom mission. I wish for once Vimla Auntie would keep all her well-wishing advise to herself! What is the need to remind Maa of her favourite pastime?!

She groaned thinking of the tiresome conversations that would follow over the next few days. Her nerves were already frayed by the anxiety around his delays in his expected return. It was Friday, so two more days till she could nag him again for an update on the Visa!

Observing there was still some time for dinner, she glumly plopped on the bed and tried to run away from her worries in a new Danielle Steel novel she had borrowed from the library.

* * *

They were just finishing dinner when the phone rang twice and stopped. A little shocked Naina gobbled the last couple of morsels of her meal and dashed to wash her hands.

When the phone rang again four minutes later, Naina was already just a step away from it pretending to be tiding the newspapers on the coffee table.

Her tentative "Hello?" was greeted with a jubilant "Naina! The visa has come through!" She almost shrieked "Really?!!" He shared laughing with delight "The passport just arrived via the courier. It's all sorted." Then sounding a little breathless, he added "I am so relived! This last week has been so fricking stressful. I kept worrying if they have sent it in the queue for additional queries... I couldn't even enjoy Kabir's wedding with a carefree heart!"

"But didn't you say that it always takes so much time?" She asked surprised. "The average time is about two-and-half to three weeks, but this has been well over a month now!" He tried to explain. Her tone was accusatory "So you lied to me earlier!"

He shrugged "I wasn't lying... just didn't see the point in worrying you needlessly... what could you have done about it anyways?" "Anyways... that's all irrelevant now!" he rushed on, "I will call my agent and ask him to book the flights for the week after. That way I can wrap up few more client meetings and spend some more time with that recruit as well."

They spoke for a couple of more minutes before he hung up.

Naina stood by the phone not sure how to contain all the excitement! He is really coming back!!! With great restraint she controlled the urge to twirl around the living room.

"What news did Madhu share? You seem very happy. Is her sister's engagement date finally set?" her mother's voice shook her out of her tour of la-la land. Naina stood starting at her mother uncomprehendingly for a few seconds, and then remembered that was the excuse she had used to cover for her hush-hush calls with Sameer over the last few weeks. Naina muttered a non-committal "Yes, it's almost finalised."

In that moment, Naina understood the sentiments of the heroines on the screen, who breakout into a solo song and dance number trying to share their unbridled joy with the flowers, birds, butterflies, bubbling brooks and such other entities. Things that would listen, but not question the reason for their joy.

As she fetched a bottle of water, her eyes landed on the little mandir in the corner of the kitchen. She had stopped talking to Him, but was He still listening to her unsaid prayers? Tonight, a great urge to share her relief and the joy at Sameer's imminent arrival with someone, someone who would understand, arose in her heart.

But healing takes time, irrespective of whether it's a wounded body, a broken soul, or a marred relationship. And the time taken to trust again, to build back that original level of belief in a relationship is relative to the depth and importance of that relationship in an individual's life.

It is easy to overlook the wrongdoings of strangers, or accept the apology of acquaintances for their insensitivities, and move on in life. But forgiving a loved one for their perceived betrayal or abandonment is much harder.

Naina left the kitchen without bowing to Him. Her heart and mind were still at odds. Maybe it was still too early. Or maybe she was still too scared of Him letting her down again.

But over the coming days, the frequency of glances cast towards the Mandir increased, and so did the amount of time for which they lingered. The unsaid prayers echoed more and more loudly in her heart.

"Bhai, did you pack the gifts I have given you for Naina?" Deepika shouted from the kitchen where she was making some coffee. Sameer hollered back from the living room rolling his eyes "Don't worry! I packed them even before I packed my essentials."

Oliver chuckled and asked him "Did you catch the game last night? Arsenal did much better than they have been doing so far this season." Sameer nodded "They desperately needed to change their play from defence to offense. Beats me why they have taken so long to figure it out!" Football was discussed by the brothers-in-law for the next few minutes till Deepika joined them.

"So, what did you get her?" Deepika asked with an excited gleam in her eyes, as she handed Sameer his cup of coffee. Sameer shrugged "Nothing." His sister looked perplexed "Nothing? Why??" Sameer replied after taking a sip "I asked her what she would like... and she said nothing." Then he added with a smug faraway look in his eyes "She said. She doesn't need anything and my going there is a gift enough for her."

Oliver chortled "Sammy, I didn't expect such gullibility from you! Are you seriously going to believe that? Oh, my boy... you have a long way to go! Never underestimate the importance of a gift in any woman's life. She may not need anything... but she will definitely want something!"

When Sameer muttered an unsure "You really think so??" Oliver responded with complete conviction "I know so. And trust me, I have learnt it the hard way." Turning towards his wife, he asked "Aren't I right Deepu?" Deepika smirked "Bhai, don't overlook my hubby's words of wisdom! After all, it's the result of my years of training."

Sameer smiled distractedly; his mind already busy trying to think of an appropriate gift.

The bus conductor cast a cursory glance at the pass that she was holding out and moved to the next seat with his box of tickets slung over one shoulder and across his body.

Naina apprehensively peeked in at the contents of bag in her lap. It had been a very long time since she had done this. Her hands had trembled slightly as the shopkeeper had handed over the small box. But going empty handed had not seemed right either.

Alighting from the bus, she walked a few paces and then stopped to buy a few flowers. Now armed with the essentials, she approached the big gate with determination. Could these be considered as a reconciliation gesture? Or a peace offering? Or an apology? Or a plea for forgiveness? She couldn't choose. Maybe all of these and much more. She decided not to dwell on naming it.

Stepping through the wrought iron wide gates, Naina approached the white stone steps. After a brief pause, she climbed up the steps and reached out for bell with clammy palms.

All her nervousness evaporated the moment the clang of the big brass bell reverberated not only within the walls of the temple, but also in the surrounding areas.

Touching the Nandi sitting at the entrance of the inner sanctum, Naina drew the courage to face the three-eyed Trilokpati. Every small step inside felt like she was scaling Kailash. As she offered the few simple Bel leaves and flowers to the ascetic fond of a frugal life, her heart flooded with immense solace. When the Punditji handed her a few pieces of rock sugar, Naina felt like it was a promise of sweetness returning to her life.

She sat down to one side leaning against the wall. Checking the time on her wristwatch Naina realised that his flight must have taken off. He is truly on his way to me!

Naina eyes adored Shiva's idol, soaking in the peace emanating from his half-open eyes. She had been afraid that she might feel unwelcome here today. Unsure, if He would overlook her temporary departure from faith. But parents are quick to forgive a child's mistakes and do not hold a grudge. A profound feeling of calmness descended on her as she prayed, Please, just let everything work out now...

* * *

The alarm clock next to her pillow, which she had covered with a thick blanket to muffle it's sound to avoid alerting her mother, went-off at half-past-three. Naina scrambled to turn it off.

Peeking outside her room, she let out a sigh of relief noting the darkness and silence in older ladies' room. She then tip-toed to the phone in the living room and dialled a number casting some apprehensive glances in the direction of their room.

Some three rings later an unfamiliar male voice answered from the other end. Feeling a little flustered by the fact that she was calling someone's residence in the middle of the night, Naina struggled to form a sentence for a bit, but when the person at the other end repeated an irritated "Hello??" She rushed to explain that she was calling to check if Sameer had reached home alright.

Naina heard someone calling out "Ramdhari! It's for me." And then Sameer came on the line "Naina, I arrived a little earlier than expected and so thought to freshen up while waiting for your call." A big warm smile lit up her face and eyes "Was the journey alright? Not too tiring I hope..." He replied truthfully "I am absolutely knackered!" "Knackered??" she asked baffled "I mean exhausted... sorry, it's just a very British word."

Adding another word to her dictionary, she nodded "Yes, it must have been a very tedious journey. And I know you've been so busy with everything this week. You should sleep now. We can talk tomorrow. I just wanted to check-in on you."

"Hello... I am tired, but not so tired that I can't even talk to you!" he exclaimed and then continued in a teasing tone "Do you think that after travelling thousands of miles to be closer to you, I just plan to sleep now?" When she softly chuckled at the other end, he frowned "I am not kidding! If sleep were the only thing on my mind, I could have easily done it in the comfort of my London flat."

He continued with a pout in his voice "Frankly, I expected you to be here to welcome me!" Naina uttered uncertainly "Sameer... I told you I would call you about this time... How could I come over at this time of the night??"

After a small pause, he replied dismissively "Don't worry about it. I understand. Okay, when are you coming over? If I go to bed now, I will be up by eleven for so. Can I expect you here about then?" She agreed "If I take the 10:40 bus, I should reach Ahmedabad by 11:30... so, I will be there in about another fifteen minutes or so."

Suddenly she asked sounding worried "Sameer, who had just answered the phone? Is somebody visiting you?" He responded nonchalantly "That's just Ramdhari. He has been working for Nanu for ages. In fact, these past few years, he and his wife have sort of been the caretakers of this house."

"So, will they be around when I come over??" the fretting in her voice was quite audible. Perplexed by her nervousness, he shrugged "I suppose so... Naina, they are the servants here. Don't worry about them! We are not answerable to them."

"And are you sure none of your family will be coming over this afternoon?" she posed another anxious query. His voice was laced with some impatience "Stop overthinking! I have told them I would like to rest during the day and have asked them to come over in the evening. Just come over as decided, okay?!"

Trying to calm her nerves, she muttered "Okay. I will see you then. Get some sleep now." And then she added excitedly "Welcome to Ahmedabad! I can't wait to see you." He replied smiling "Me too! See you soon."

As he put down the phone, Sameer glanced at the watch and noted that it was close to 3:45 am. Deciding that six-seven hours of sleep would be perfect he headed to the bedroom that had been readied for him. It was the same room that he used to stay in during his infrequent visits to Ahmedabad. Vishakha had conveyed Ramdhari's query if he wanted to stay in Nanu's master bedroom, but Sameer had asked her to convey back his wish to use his old bedroom.

As he slipped into the bed, Sameer recalled his slight disappoint at not finding her at the airport. Though she hadn't said anything to that effect, a part of him had believed that he would find her outside the arrival's gates, her twinkling eyes eagerly searching for him in the throng of the travellers. After all, wasn't it only fair that he should have been welcomed back with a hug just like the one that had convinced him to push through with his decision to move?

Just a little more patience mate... she will be here soon enough! He absentmindedly slung an arm over the extra pillow and slipped into a fatigued sleep.

Once again overwhelmed by joy and relief, Naina stood in her living room for a minute basking in the reality that she had just spoken to him. On his Ahmedabad number! He is here!!!

And then she quietly headed to the Kitchen and lit a diya in front of the Mandir. Knowing that the Gods and Goddesses already knew everything in her heart, she just bowed her head in gratitude, Thank you Bhagwanji!

Knowing the next few hours would be an arduous test of her patience, Naina headed back to her bed, to toss and turn till her mother was up for the day.
