020. right person, wrong time
EVERYONE HATES GOODBYE'S, especially when you know that the goodbye is going to be forever. when you know that the goodbye will be the last time you'll ever hear their voice, or the first last time.
but sometimes goodbyes lead to bigger opportunities, just without them. as Callahan talked to the doctors Maggie, Quackity, Emily and Karl all sat in the waiting room none of them daring to speak as to what Maggie just told them.
"he can't, Maggie." Quackity breathed out leaning forward against his knees dropping his head onto his hands. "he can't."
"it's too late now." Maggie rasped out putting her curly hair in a bun behind her head wiping away the rest of the dry tears. "he has made his mind up and it hurts us all, I know but when that man makes up his mind there's no turning back."
"but he's basically going to kill himself, Maggie!" Emily added on their blonde hair now in braids as she stressed did her hair. "as much as we need Ruby, we need Callahan as well. Maggie, he's like my brother. you can't let him do this." Emily cried making Maggie close her eyes.
No one spoke again as they just silently cried to the news, crying for everything. for the fact that they might lose another one of their best-friend, that they might lose their Ruby. and even if they do make it, he won't be there and that will just make it worse.
"he spoke." Maggie's voice rang through their ears bringing them back to the lobby. "he said, thank you Maggie. you guys are telling me to change his mind, but I can't. No matter how much I want to I can't. I'm an old women who's been through life already I can't tell him what he can or can't do."
The adults all stared at Maggie who seemed broken. she wants the happy old women who was Cupid for them all. For Ruby and Callahan, for Emily and Quackity. she wasn't telling jokes to them, telling them stories of her past lovers and how she played them. how people would chase after her.
she was sad, longing for a feeling of hope that might not even come in a long time. she needs him more than ever and he wants to leave because thats what he thinks it's the right thing to do.
"For Ruby Jacobs." The doctor called out making them all stand up and rush towards the doctor who held a smile of hope. "we will now be holding surgery to change the heart, you guys are lucky someone is going to donate their heart. congratulations."
as that news went through their ears, Ruby was laying down in a room where a big window was plastered on her right side. there was lights outside shining the dark park.
Ruby opened her eyes softly and slowly before someone familiar showed up in the side of the window. he was tall, with ginger hair, he is wearing a brown beanie, tears running down his eyes.
"Callahan?" the person who she grew to love oh so dearly. but he wasn't wearing a smile, his lips were in a frown, he then placed his hand on the window. Ruby had a gut feeling making her shake her head. "No."
with that word Callahan's lip lifted upwards a little, tilting his head to the side. "No. Please no. Callahan." She didn't have the strength to shout out the words all she managed was to rasp them out.
"Callahan. don't leave me alone." Ruby sobbed out trying to wiggle themselves out of the bed as doctors entered the room preparing her for the surgery.
"I love you, so much Ruby."
Ruby let out a gasp sob as she heard his voice for the first time but not in the right time. she was dying and he was going to sacrifice himself for her. They didn't want to hear their voice like this, never like this.
"Callahan."
he walked away, leaving Ruby a sobbing mess as she tried to comprehend the fact that she will have to live and he won't be there. he's not there anymore. he's gone.
the love of her life is gone and she's alive. all because of him. he saved her, in more ways that a human can be saved.
that's the end ig 🤝
