୨⎯ chapter eighteen ⎯୧
018. i love you

CALLAHAN AND RUBY NEVER EXPECTED EACH OTHER TO GET CLOSE, not even in a romantic way. but they did get close, they got closer than they ever thought they would get close.

But while they were both leaning against the counter of the flower shop, laughing as Ruby kept on telling her amazing story on how their flower died again. for the 100th time. they realize how much this next events might damage one another. And realized how hard it's going to be to let go of him.

"I'm being serious! my flowers are always alive when you treat them!" Ruby chuckled her voice starting to turn a little raspy due to medication, but of course he doesn't know that.

Callahan just glanced down at her shaking his head with a teasingly smirk, he then lifted up his hand and started to write something on the note pad.

I'm just a flower person,
you don't treat them with love and care.

"I do so!"

only Frankie.

Ruby's smile dropped knowing that it was kind of true. "it's a baby." Ruby said dramatically glancing up at him with their mouth wide open.

Callahan shook his head with a laugh moving his gaze from her over to something that was sticking out of her backpack. Ruby noticed this and also glanced over to whatever he was looking at before her eyes widen in horror.

"Let's go visit quackity and Emily, shall we?" Ruby said intertwining their fingers together pulling him. Callahan frowned his eyebrows at their reaction and when Ruby went past the backpack he sneakily snatched the letter away from the backpack and then tapped Ruby on the shoulder making them turn around with a smile.

"yes?"

Callahan lifted up his hand and pointed over to the bathroom and then back at him. Ruby understood this and nodded their head, "I'll met you over there." Ruby said leaning up and pecking his cheek before leaving him standing in the flower shop.

He glanced down at the letter, something in him knowing it wasn't a good idea to open it. if only he trusted that feeling.

"So not funny." Quackity mumbled as Emily and Ruby were making fun of him for being a iPad kid.

"it kind of is," Emily laughed shaking their head as a tear of joy slipped past their eyes. Quackity glanced over at Emily with a glare, "don't make me say what happened last night. you won't be laughing then." He threaten jokingly making Emily freeze.

"what?" Ruby asked glancing between the two, having a little bit of a headace but drowned it away with coffee. "is it bad?" Ruby then sitting up straight feeling a wave of small pain consuming her body.

"she tripped on something and landed on top of me." Quackity said smugly making Emily throw him a napkin.

"and then you made a sexual joke." Emily said glaring back at him making Ruby chuckle at them. "Oh come on, cariño. It was a joke, at plus I wouldn't mind you falling on top of me, it's a sight I'll always like to see." Quackity said with a smirk.

Ruby noticed how Emily's face was turned into a light pink shade. "Quackity!"

"Emily!"

He sat on the couch of the little room he made for him and Ruby, his leg starting to bounce knowing damn well that he shouldn't open up the letter but then he wants to know as well. He traveled his other hand down his leg brushing off the nerves before slowly opening up the letter.

All he had to do was read the first phrase to immediately be invested on what the letter is about. He never thought in a million years that he would be reading anything like this.

he didn't know how much someone would become such a huge effect on him. reading past every single person whom they said sorry to broke his heart even more knowing that he wasn't the only one who was close with her, it was other people.

more people who just cared very deeply for her, who would do anything to see that smile on their face again, to see how much they have achieved and make sure they celebrate it the right way.

when he reached to his part he couldn't help but let out a chock sobbed that was at the back of his throat. thick, watery tears were falling off his cheeks as he now stood up to read the letter more and more, the deeper he goes into the letter the more afraid he gets the more angry he gets for the fact that he had to find out through a death letter.

"Callahan? Sweetheart?" Maggie's soft voice rang through his ear, but he heard it so far away that he couldn't really comprehend as louder sobs escaped his mouths. Maggie entered the room noticing Callahan crumbling up the piece of paper in pure anger and then threw it, hard, at the wall.

"Callahan," Maggie let out a sigh having a feeling about what the letter was about. "oh sweetie." Maggie said in empathy opening up her arms for Callahan to run into her embrace but instead he walked past her going over to the coffee shop.

"Oh look, the devil himself is here." Emily announced as Callahan entered the shop with tears stained on his face, his hands were balled up into a fist at the side of him body, and his eyes were glued onto Ruby.

He pointed at Ruby walking past her quickly grabbing a paper and a pen before angrily writing on the paper slamming it on the table. Ruby, along with quackity and Emily leaned against the table to read the letter.

why Ruby, why are you keeping so
many fucking secrets. especially this secret,
a secret that id basically you dying Ruby.
why

Quackity and Emily didn't know what he was talking about but the brown hair girl knew exactly what he was talking about. "How did you—"

He cut her off but pointing understand that small paragraph.

I got the letter that was sticking
out of your backpack.
Ruby, I can't lose you, you can't just
keep that as a fucking secret and then not wanting us to find out until you are dead
that's unfair.

"Ruby? What does that mean?" Quackity asked his voice was small sounding like a 5 year old that was getting in trouble.

Ruby's eyes started to water, glancing up at Callahan locking eyes with him. "I have been diagnosed with a heart disease. we had hope that someone with a healthy heart would donate to me, after they die, but almost all the hearts aren't healthy. so there's no more hope." Ruby tried to keep her voice at a steady volume as her chest started to hurt more and more with each word.

"what?" Quackity breathed out tears starting to run down his face. "I don't have much time left. any of this days—"

"why didn't you tell us? Why couldn't you have fucking mention that!" Quackity raged standing up from his seat making the chair scratch in the floor.

"Alex—"

"No! What the fuck is wrong with you! I'm your best-friend, your brother and you think I don't have the right to know? Did you know?!" Quackity glanced over at Callahan who broke the contact with Ruby and shook his head making Quackity scoff.

"Ruby."

"im sorry." and then the worst day of their life came to life....
