~Myrtle~
I sat and watched, as the miracle before my eyes unfolded. The two people in front of me, dancing their first and final dance, had finally been able to find happiness. The glimmering smiles on their faces and the twinkle in their eyes made the whole room spring up in cheer. And to every person that had objectified them, or hadn't agreed with their decision, was receiving a huge middle finger in my opinion. They were finally happy, and I was the one who made it happen.
The lights on the dancefloor were bright and colorful. The whole room was such a happy vibe, that I couldn't help but smile. Maybe it was the champagne, the bubbly feeling it gave me in my stomach, or maybe it was actual joy, something I don't feel often. It felt good, being able to smile after so many years without. The last time I had smiled was with Mina, the most amazing women I had ever met. I imagined a life with her if only fate had gone differently. I imagined how we would live in China, and start a family one day. I imagined that this wedding was ours.
However it wasn't, and all fantasies aside I had a mission to finish. But just another hour of waiting couldn't hurt.
So I continued to sit and watch the two men stride cross the floor. One was dressed in a white tuxedo, the other in black. They swirled each other round and round, not once missing a step or a beat. As the song drew to a close, and the celebratory claps began, the two kissed each other confidently.
The crowd went back to their chattings and joyful doings, and I watched as the couple strode towards me.
"Oh honey, you have a stray hair hanging!" Tommy told me as he became closer. He licked his fingers and fixed the single curly stand of red hair that stood on my hair.
"Yeah, you looked like Alfalfa from The Little Rascals!" Tommy's husband Antwane said. He handed me another glass of champagne, then told us both he'd be off socializing before walking away.
"I'm sorry Tommy, I'm not one to go to parties or wear tuxes like this for the matter," I told him, adjusting my tie for the thousandth tie that night. I felt suffocated in the three-piece suit. It felt like I was the groom at the wedding instead of Teddy and Antwane.
"So, when are we doing, you know," he whispered in my ear, "the thing...?"
"Whenever you're ready Tommy, "I said and glanced towards his husband," I think you need to spend some more time with your husband before we do "the thing". "
I patted his back, pushing him towards Antwane, who was looking at us, with his huge cheeky smile. Man, I didn't know weddings were so fun.
The Next Day
The newlyweds and I stood on the most beautiful cliff I had ever seen. The crashing waves from the Atlantic Ocean pleased my ears. The wind moved all of our hair in sync. Ireland's hilly fields and bright green grass was nothing less remarkable. It was so peaceful.
Tommy and Antwane had finished their goodbyes as I stepped forward. The syringe in my pocket burned ten times more than it did with Amelia. I was destroying the beautiful couple I had basically made.
I handed the bouquet of Myrtle flowers to Antwane whose tears fell distinctively.
"Antwane and Tommy, a bouquet of Myrtle, symbolizes the ideal of love, how strong, and how it can grow over time. The flowers are also the flowers of marriage, the union of two people, no matter the gender or sexual orientation, religion, or the color of skin. Antwane, you and Tommy, defy all odds. You've both come from very different backgrounds, and yet continue to love each other in every moment. You have taught me and many others how important love is. And this is why I will forever be sorry, for I am taking away the love of your life Antwane. It burns my soul, and the selfishness I feel is indescribable. Antwane and Tommy, I will eternally be remorseful. But my job must be completed."
My hands shook as I reached into my jacket pocket, taking out the syringe. As I inserted the needle into Tommy's arm, the couple held each other, in a tight hug.
The medicine was inserted. And I stood back and watched as they said their goodbye's.
"Goodbye Antwane, you will forever be my eternal love."
"And so will you, Tommy. I love you..."
Antwane laid Tommy's lifeless body onto the soft green grass. He chose one myrtle flower and lied it onto Tommy's chest, and takes his ring, squeezing it into his hand.
The sight I saw, the feeling's I felt, I couldn't describe. And for the first time in my life, tears fell from eyes, not from fear, but from complete and utter sadness.
Minutes later, the tears still hadn't stopped. And as I looked towards the setting Ireland sun, whose warms rays still could not warm my cold heart, I pulled the trigger.
I promised myself at that moment, that I would never do this again.
