Chapter 2: Bull fighting
It had been a few weeks since kids started showing up for the summer and Chiron had finally returned.
I was in the middle of the fields with a few younger campers for an impromptu dagger lesson. All of them were having issues with sword lessons and I figured I would try to help them.
"Alright, now. You have to remember when you're fighting with a dagger you're a lot closer to your opponent, and so you have to pay a lot more attention to your surroundings."
They were all paired up in groups of two and were practicing while I circled around them, giving tips and advice.
"Lucy! Quit playing with those, its time for your makeup lesson! Deena isn't going to wait for you forever."
"Actually, Elise can you give us just five more minutes?" I asked turning towards the tall girl with the blonde hair. "I think learning to protect herself and stay alive is more important than which shade of eyeshadow matches her skin tone."
I watched as Elise's face grew a deep shade of red and she looked over at Lucille.
"Come with me now or you're going to be stuck cleaning the cabin for a week. You can play with these toys some other time." Charm speak. Cheater.
Lucille with her face in a daze started following her. I glared at Elise, anger bubbling in my stomach as I watched her walk away.
I suddenly remembered what Chiron had said to do when I felt like this. Think of my favorite things. Counting was useless. So I closed my eyes and my mind filled with pictures of various flowers and friends. Suddenly, it seemed as soon as I closed my eyes I heard it. A loud shriek, one of pure fear.
I opened my eyes and looked at Elise and Lucille who were both screaming. It didn't take long to realize what they were screaming at.
"My hair!" Elise screamed. Her hair had changed from its normal platinum blonde to a vine green. The longer I looked the more I realized that it was a bunch of vines covered in colorful flowers.
"C-change it back! I know it was you Azalea."
"I-I-I-"
"Hey, guys what going on?" Luke asked nonchalantly as he walked over to us. He took a quick glance at Elise and smiled. "Elise, I love what you've done with your hair! The latest style I presume."
"Ugh, I'm going to Chiron and Mr. D!" She yelled and stormed away towards the big house.
I turned around to the campers I had been teaching who were all frozen and staring at me.
"Um, you can all go to your cabins or classes."
They all listened and left leaving just Luke and I. He looked at me with an all to familiar smirk and a twinkle in his eye.
"Well, you're getting better at that. The first time you've done something that big. Usually its just bags and stuff, but this time it was her entire hair."
"I-I didn't mean to, I swear! She just made me so angry and I tried to calm myself down but when I opened my eyes her hair was-was...."
"Hey, it's alright, just calm down. I'm sure someone will be able to fix it. Whether its Chiron or one of the children of Demeter." He set a hand on my shoulder and smiled.
"But what is Chiron gets mad at me and kicks me out? This isn't the first time I've done something like this."
"Just be glad for her it wasn't winter."
Tears sprung to my eyes and were soon streaming down my face as Luke's face fell when he realized what he had said.
"Zae, I didn't mean it that way-" but I had already started to run off.
That evening one of the worst storms's in months passed over us. We all sat in the pavilion eating dinner and everyone was talking loudly trying to drown out the sound of thunder.
Elise kept looking over at me and glaring. She was wearing a cute baseball cap and had a new hair for that looked vaguely like a wig.
"What do you think they're talking about?" Kevin, one of the unclaimed who stayed with us whispered in my ear as well stared at Mr. D and Chiron who seemed to be having a very serious discussion.
"Mr. D probably tried to turn a camper into a dolphin or something," I said and continued to eat.
"H-has he ever done that before."
"I don't think so, but I wouldn't put it past him."
Annabeth and I were walking together to our cabins when we heard a voice behind us.
"Azalea, Annabeth. Would you two come with me? I want to discuss something."
We turned around and saw Chiron standing there with his arms crossed over his chest.
We looked at each other with a matching look of fear and uncertainty.
"Don't worry, neither of you is I'm trouble. Although I would like to have a talk about what you did to Ms. Porter."
We both follow behind him silently and he leads us into the big house. Mr. D is inside sitting on one of the plush armchairs that he has basically claimed as his own. He sat reading some book that was most definitely older than I was, but to be fair I didn't even know he could read.
Chiron gestured for us to sit on the couch and once we had Chiron stood in front of us.
"So......" I said trying to break the awkward silence.
"Azalea, I am very disappointed in you."
"I-I didn't mean to Chiron. I- it's just- well she made me so mad. And I tried to calm myself down but it didn't work."
"I understand that some can not help their powers, but you've been here longer than any other camper and I expect more from you. You are supposed to set an example for the younger campers."
"Chiron, if I may. Azalea is one of the youngest campers we have. Most of our campers are teenagers."
"I meant training wise. How do I know I can trust you to train the other campers if everytime someone makes you mad you turn them into a daisy."
"I-I...." Suddenly loud thunder shook the house saving me from replying.
While Chiron and Annabeth stared at each other silently questioning the noise I took this as a chance to build up some courage.
"Can I leave?" I asked steadying my voice.
"Yes, you may but please. Stay out of trouble." Chrion said.
I left just as Chiron and Annabeth started talking. I stood on the porch for a minute and watched the storm the neatly avoided the camp.
Staring and Thalia's tree I got the urge to get closer. So I did. It only took just a few moments till I reached the giant tree on top of the hill. I walked around the tree admiring the tree and her sacrifice, as I walked around small flowers followed me. I got on my knees and picked a few of the prettiest ones I had grown and laid them on one of the roots of the tree.
Suddenly a loud roar tour though the night sky. I fell backwards as the loud roar scared me. Looking up I saw something I hadn't seen before. A boy and what looked to be his mother carrying something unconscious. As I stared longer I saw them talking and they separated.
Over the hill the source of the roar appeared. I sat frozen for a minute wonder if my eyes were playing tricks on me. A minotaur.
The minotaur charged at the boy as the mom laid the unconscious thing down on the ground.
I realized if I didn't help them one of them could end up dead. As I rushed down the hill I grabbed my dagger from my belt holster. Just as the minotaur was about to get the boy he moved to the side causing the minotaur to yell in frustration and turn towards the mother and charge.
I reached the boy just in time to watch his mother turn into golden dust in the minotaurs hand. I had never seen a human do that.
"Mom!" I grabbed the boys hand and he finally noticed me.
"Come with me. I know where we can be safe."
He turned towards me scared for a second but the the look in his eyes changed to one of anger.
He looked back over to the minotaur and grew even angrier as he watched it sniff the unconscious thing on the ground.
He turned around and walked towards Thalia's tree. I followed thinking maybe he was going to the big house but right in front of the tree he stripped himself of his bright red jacket and held it the the side of himself like a bull fighter.
"Hey!" He bellowed as loud as he could manage. The minotaur turned towards us and started charging.
What happened next happened so fast I barely processed it. The boy jumped on to the bulls neck and the bull ran head first into Thalia's tree with so much force the ground shook.
I stared at the boy on top of the bull to long to notice the bull charge at me. I screamed in terror as I was lifted into the air.
I slashed at it's hand that was holding me. Gold dust fell to the ground but not enough to kill it.
"Let her go!" The boy yelled and almost immediately the minotaur dropped me to the ground and my wrist made a sickening crack noise as I landed on in.
I looked over and saw the boy laying on the ground next to me with something in his hand. A horn.
The minotaur was waiting in anguish before charging at us. The boy rammed the horn into it's stomach at the same time I stabbed it with my dagger. Gold dust fell and covered both of us.
I laid on the ground clutching my wrist and trying to catch my breath.
"A-are you okay?" The boy asked as he hovered above me.
"I'll live."
"Food...." Both of our head's snapped over to see the unconscious thing laying in the dirt.
"Grover." The boy slowly walked over to where the thing lay and I followed.
As we got closer a place deep in my got was tugged as I realized who was laying there.
"Grover!"
"Y-you know him?"
"Of course I do, we're friends."
Me and the boys both lifted Grover up and carried him together.
The boy and I made it the the porch of the big house before both of us collapsed onto the ground with Grover in-between us.
"Chiron! Annabeth!" I yelled as loud as I could as I watched the boy slowly pass out next to me.
The door opened and Chiron and Annabeth stood above all of us.
"You were gone for ten minutes!" Annabeth yelled.
I smiled at her and tried to stand up.
"Come on, we have to get them to the infirmary."
